Also, talk about the life and career of Dusty Rhodes, who passed away today at the age of 69. Just a sad day in wrestling today.

Comments

  1. Hehe. You said 69.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Sad stuff. I know it wasn't his best work but I enjoyed Dusty in the WWF when I was a kid.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I said this else where but i think it's worth saying again. These guys should get their memorial before they die. A guy like Dusty or even Warrior should have been able to see the out pour of love from the fans and how much impact they made on us all

    ReplyDelete
  4. Ric Flair has had like 18 memorials already.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Well, I wont be able to review the shoot as I am still stuck at work and will be all night.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I think it WAS his best work, given the material he had to work with.

    ReplyDelete
  7. And he survived wearing polka dots.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Yeah I can't lie, I was never an NWA fan and didn't much care for the polka dot character ever as a kid.

Like, I get that this is terrible for the people that loved him and that he's a huge legend and all that and I feel bad for his kids, but for me personally this doesn't even nearly approach how I felt after Eddie.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Also, doesn't the HoF induction count for said memorial?

    ReplyDelete
  10. For the shoot interview I review next week, I can either put up a poll or do the RoH Dusty Rhodes shoot. Which do you guys prefer?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Christ... can Goldust and Stardust have their WM match yet?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Dusty. Scott would appreciate the extra Adsense revenue.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Not after that disaster they had at the Feb ppv.

    ReplyDelete
  14. They had a match. It sucked.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Some motherfuckers better get ready to fly for bionic elbows from the Rhodes kids.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hard times, is when you pro bono writer does not bring his shoot interview collection in his car to work with him in the morning and gets stuck working all night long, thus unable to capitalize on a tragic situation.

    ReplyDelete
  17. They can fight over the services of Baby Doll.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Macklin, Man Without FearJune 11, 2015 at 5:22 PM

I was too young for Dusty/WWF guy so I'm not as personally hit as I was for Macho or Eddie. Definitely is awful but I didn't have that connection built in over yeeeears like some WWF/E guys I grew up watching.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Macklin, Man Without FearJune 11, 2015 at 5:23 PM

He got a DVD retrospective and a HOF induction. Both are pretty great memorials.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yeah exactly, like I totally see why it's a big deal, it's just not a big deal to me personally. 69 is a pretty ripe old age in wrestling.

    ReplyDelete
  21. not saying Dusty didn't know he was appropriated I've just been some what blown away by the amount of attention today across all sports and news media and the internet. I guess I misspoke with Warrior because he pretty much did get a weekend long memorial..that strangely ended with his death.

    ReplyDelete
  22. That Jim Ross can call a hell of a match: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xz7btc_01-92-05-17-wargames-wrestlewar_sport

    ReplyDelete
  23. Besides the obvious ones (flair, rock, Brock, hogan, Vince, Austin), any other wrestlers who would get mainstream news coverage if they died today?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hard Times is when ya lay off your Southern States Wrestling and NJPW writers that provide fresh content on off hours.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yeah it's all definitely relative. Eddy didn't hit me as I wasn't watching during his big run, whereas I grew up with Dusty. Harley will probably hit harder.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Macklin, Man Without FearJune 11, 2015 at 5:24 PM

I think the way it happened had something to do with it. A fall. He fell for a living and yet one fall and suddenly that's it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Warrior had the greatest last 3 days in a wrestlers life.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hogan's going to be the big one, and I didn't even give a fuck about him growing up.

But that one's going to suck.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ameeeeeeeericaaaaaan....

    ....Dreeeeeeeaaaaaaam.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I get the feeling that had more to do with storytelling. They were probably told to save the big spots for WM. Unfortunately, they save way too much for WM and the match sucked.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yea I admitted to that lower in this post. replace him with Savage would be better

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yeah he and Ric will also sting. As the blog's resident Ole Anderson fan I'll be fighting through the hate to post nice things when he passes.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Macklin, Man Without FearJune 11, 2015 at 5:26 PM

I don't want to deal in absolutes but I doubt there will be a single wrestling fan on this planet who isn't taken aback when Hogan goes. Love him or hate him Hogan is an unstoppable force that everyone passed through at one time or another.

    ReplyDelete
  34. And Savage didn't want anything to do with the fans before he passed.

On the whole, wrestlers get a HELL of a lot more recognition than they did before the fall of kayfabe.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Savage wanted nothing to do with the fans before his death.

    ReplyDelete
  36. HHH, Undertaker, Big Show, John Cena, Randy orton, CM Punk, Daniel bryan, Gold Berg, Darren Young

    ReplyDelete
  37. Macklin, Man Without FearJune 11, 2015 at 5:27 PM

As someone who is 30 years removed from Ole and only hearing hate for him for a long time, I find myself enjoying his promos I've seen and his tagging with Arn. I haven't seen much but I've been impressed by what I have seen.

    ReplyDelete
  38. good lord all I'm saying is it would have been nice for Dusty to seeing all of this love before he died.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Really feel for Dustin. If anyone knew his dad's life it was him.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hard Times, is looking your wife in the eye and saying, "Baby, I ain't reaching 2,000 page views tonight."

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh boy, that match was a pile of shit

    ReplyDelete
  42. My money is on Nickla in the three-way dance.

    ReplyDelete
  43. The standing ovation as the top inductee into the Hall of Fame doesn't count for that?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Macklin, Man Without FearJune 11, 2015 at 5:29 PM

Twitter and Social media makes it a ton easier to show your adulation for legends.

I can go on Twitter right now and tell Shawn Michaels or Jake Roberts how much I've enjoyed their work in their careers and how much they mean to me.

    ReplyDelete
  45. It's still on them to give something that would make fans want to see a rematch.

    ReplyDelete
  46. fine you win...im glad Dusty didn't get to see something like today because he had a HOF induction and that is all he deserved

    ReplyDelete
  47. Jimmy Hart as well, being a guy with a #1 song.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Rest In Peace Dusty..

In true Dusty fashion, I hope that God reverses his decision and brings him back to life.

    ReplyDelete
  49. #cowbell# #cowbell# #cowbell# #cowbell# #cowbell# #cowbell# #cowbell#

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm glad I got to see Dusty in person back in 2013. Granted it was in the middle of the whole Big Show/Big Steph feud, but damn that guy could cut a promo, even in his 60's.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Macklin, Man Without FearJune 11, 2015 at 5:31 PM

It's pretty wild. Of course they have to deal with people shit talking them too but they can sift through those and find appreciation posts and thank yous and all that. It's great for that aspect.

    ReplyDelete
  52. gonna watch 'Merican Dream vs Macho King from Oct90 tonite!!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Yeah that would be the biggest one I missed

    ReplyDelete
  54. Macklin, Man Without FearJune 11, 2015 at 5:32 PM

Morbid as it sounds, depending on the cause of death even a lower tier guy will get mainstream attention.

    ReplyDelete
  55. The important thing is that I win.

    ReplyDelete
  56. When the Road Warriors spiked him in the eye, 12 year old me thought that was real. RIP.

    ReplyDelete
  57. yea I told Dustin and cody my condolences and how great I thought there dad was today. Pre-this stuff I certainly wouldn't have sat down and wrote them a letter.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I was listening to a podcast the other day, can't remember which, and the guest said how good their matches had been on the house show circuit. Shame for them a clunker was on PPV.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I normally don't get into any fighting on this board but honestly what drew you into feeling the need to combat my every comment when my point was it's been a crazy amount of attention and love he has drawn today...wise he could have seen it?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Pretty sure these complements roll off like water off a ducks back.

To paraphrase Ole Anderson, the first time you get complimented it feels awesome. The hundredth time is okay. By the thousandth time around, it doesn't mean anything.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Just watched Sting's Squadron beat the Dangerous Alliance in Wargames. No trip to Larrlyland for Paul E.

    ReplyDelete
  62. TMZ will cover anyone.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Extant1979 - Extreme SuperstarJune 11, 2015 at 5:37 PM

What a weird fucking day. About half an hour after I heard about Dusty dying, I walk in to work and see that frigging Chyna is sitting in the middle of the news room being interviewed for something. She's still a pretty imposing figure.

    ReplyDelete
  64. What's the best Dusty singles match? Flair? Blanchard?

I'm going with the Barry Windham cage match.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Macklin, Man Without FearJune 11, 2015 at 5:38 PM

    Did you say anything?

    ReplyDelete
  66. Would that "something" be "porn"?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Daniel Bryan dying tonight would be gynormous.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Apparently Michael Cole learned a lot from Dusty Rhodes over the last few years. What it is, I have no idea.

    ReplyDelete
  69. 5 minutes alone in the double cage with Arn in the Omni.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Macklin, Man Without FearJune 11, 2015 at 5:39 PM

Cole secretly has a hell of an elbow but never gets to use it.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Fun fact, next week will be the 100th shoot interview recap that I have done for the blog. I have a little contest planned for that.

    ReplyDelete
  72. You should have asked her about Christopher Lee

    ReplyDelete
  73. Has anyone ever pointed out how Nine Inch Nails' "March of the Pigs" borrows from Koko B. Ware's "Do the Bird"? https://open.spotify.com/track/0CkALfEBt0q9yYPkQFHm19

    ReplyDelete
  74. Dusty vs Stan Hansen from Japan?

    ReplyDelete
  75. I was 8, and I was FUCKING TERRIFIED of the Road Warriors after that.

    ReplyDelete
  76. That's cool, where do you work? Is it safe to assume you did a DX crotch chop

    ReplyDelete
  77. Extant1979 - Extreme SuperstarJune 11, 2015 at 5:40 PM

I didn't get a chance. By the time I realized it was her, she was being led around the news room on a tour.

Once she got up from the table and disappeared from sight, the editor-in-chief started asking people who she was, prompting one of the other top editors to say, rather loudly, "she's a porn star who used to be a wrestler!" The EIC kept talking about how he had his picture taken with a porn star, to the point where someone had to tell him to shut up, because Chyna was still in the office somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I wish you good luck in your search for nice things.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Extant1979 - Extreme SuperstarJune 11, 2015 at 5:41 PM

She was already pretty broken up about Ornette Coleman.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Maria Menounos is gonna be quoting all of this someday.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Flair and Hogan will knock my dick in the dirt when they die.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Macklin, Man Without FearJune 11, 2015 at 5:42 PM

Jeez that's great. You'd think if anyone was marking out it would have been you haha. That EIC needs to act like a professional.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Ha, I'll be sticking with great promos, classic matches and his Georgia run.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Ric Flair sells for Dusty Rhodes impersonator.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=B6jzClVT-6M

    ReplyDelete
  85. I hate saying it, but fans would probably even boo his 10 bell salute. Wrestling fans can be fucked up.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Extant1979 - Extreme SuperstarJune 11, 2015 at 5:45 PM

I'm still the new guy around here, so I thought it best to keep my fanboyish nature under wraps.

After she had left, the Sunday editor looked over at me and asked what her wrestling name was and added, "She used to be more attractive, didn't she?"

Pretty much everyone else here was talking about Dusty.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Random Dusty Memory: I saw a show by a company run by Dusty. Probably 15 years ago. Tiny crowd, maybe 150. Turnbuckle Championship Wrestling, I believe. Dusty had a match earlier in the show, which he won. The main event was a Bunkhouse Stampede match (of course) and Dusty is in it. Dusty gets into it with the guy his match was with earlier in the night and chases him out of the ring by climbing over the top rope, thus eliminating himself. So I guess he would rather book himself to look like an idiot than a loser. Also, he bladed.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Touching how both father and son got fired from WCW for selling TOO well.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I cried when I heard about Eddie. When Savage died, my cousin told me while I was driving to get an oil change. I had to pull over because I fucking lost it.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Imagine if she's never seen again, she can become the newsroom boogie-woman, "Be careful, she's still heeeeere somewhere"

    ReplyDelete
  91. Hopefully Cleveland wins tonight to brighten everyone's spirits

    ReplyDelete
  92. I bet Piper would.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Jobber's misery does tend to brighten up the board.

    ReplyDelete
  94. The facts don't bear that out. They were most respectful for Savage and Warrior.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Life sucks! Deal with it!

    ReplyDelete
  96. Man, I did too.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Leave the guy alone, he got a haircut that left him looking like a normal human being.

    ReplyDelete
  98. It's weird how pro wrestling will get mainstream media sports coverage when someone dies, but hardly any other time. And I get how The Rock has woven himself into the mainstream sports pages because he was a college athlete, but legit sports sites are covering Dusty's death, and some of them covered Perro Aguayo's death.

    ReplyDelete
  99. ESPN has been fairly WWE-friendly in recent years.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I'm surprised no one has mentioned sting or angle or Jericho.

    ReplyDelete
  101. sports illustrated did a piece around WM time about how wrestling has snuck into the mainstream. It gets way more coverage than you think.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I still can't believe TNA is running Angle/EC3 on the 7/1 episode of Impact instead of at Slammiversary a week before.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I've seen WWE pop up on ESPN when a sports team does the "Yes" chant.

    ReplyDelete
  104. There are weekly articles on Grantland, AV Club and Rolling Stone about wrestling.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Macklin, Man Without FearJune 11, 2015 at 5:50 PM

You are leaving out the fact that he has to park his 4th car on the street like a palooka!

    ReplyDelete
  106. Irony of Irony, the actual product's circling the drain but enough people grew up on the boom period that the business gets the "respect" they always wanted

    ReplyDelete
  107. It's still weird to me, though. So are mainstream media outlets accepting pro wrestling as a sport, or not?

    ReplyDelete
  108. People would be mildly surprised if Angle OD'd?

    ReplyDelete
  109. "that has to be hard" - that's what she said!

    ReplyDelete
  110. Sport, I don't know. I'd say it's seen as a legit form of entertainment now only because of the strong buying power of the audience. It's kind of hard to ignore their footprint

    ReplyDelete
  111. If someone dies in the ring or kills his family, then it's a legit sport

    ReplyDelete
  112. The underlying assumption that he hasn't seen this love on a daily basis for decades.

    ReplyDelete
  113. What's the card for Slammiversary?

    ReplyDelete
  114. I think other media outlets slowly figured out that all the stuff that goes on behind the scenes is some of the better stuff you can write about.

Plus, there's a VERY dedicated fan base.

    ReplyDelete
  115. What about the last 13 years makes you not believe they'd do something like that?

    ReplyDelete
  116. Sure, which is why entertainment media outlets would cover it, but legit sports outlets?

    ReplyDelete
  117. Extant1979 - Extreme SuperstarJune 11, 2015 at 5:54 PM

    Because of the taping schedule?

    ReplyDelete
  118. Slowly but surely, Vince got his wish and they actually became an entertainment company.

    ReplyDelete
  119. William H. Macy just stands out as odd in a Jurassic Park movie.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Yeah, it used to be taboo but nowadays they cover it more than I'd expect. The nash incident with his son, scott hall's issues both made TMZ at least. They tend to get a lot of coverage these days and it's not in the snarky looking-down-on-it tone it used to be

    ReplyDelete
  121. Well he has a lot of great promos and matches but it will be a lot harder to find people saying nice things about him than Dusty.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Nope. Slammiversary is 6/28. The tapings are 6/25-6/27.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I dont know in Batista's case, especially if he died 1 week before last year's WM, and the 10 bell salute was on the last Raw before WM. I've never seen a wrestler as hated as he was last year

    ReplyDelete
  124. Non-stop is an unbelievably shitty movie.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Does it really matter at this point?

    ReplyDelete
  126. Extant1979 - Extreme SuperstarJune 11, 2015 at 5:57 PM

    So, "Because TNA," then?

    ReplyDelete
  127. Sheamus & Kane & Kofi Kingston

I'm all for shaking things up but is there a backstory for this? I've been out of the WWE loop the past week or so. Anything interesting happen this past week on Raw?

    ReplyDelete
  128. Macklin, Man Without FearJune 11, 2015 at 5:57 PM

Tyson Kidd might be out for a year and might need the surgery Austin and Edge had for spinal injuries. That's pretty scary.

    ReplyDelete
  129. The guy was having the best year of his career, too. The report says it was a freak injury so hopefully Joe doesn't get heat or feel as bad.

    ReplyDelete
  130. just when things looked to be going in a positive direction

    ReplyDelete
  131. So what can WWE work into Smackdown for a Dusty tribute?

    ReplyDelete
  132. Nattie is going to take it off at some point. Her salary isn't going to feed them both and the cats.

    ReplyDelete
  133. It's enough of both to be covered by both.

    ReplyDelete
  134. The show is 30% recaps and filler anyway. Don't know how hard it would be to edit a tribute in though.

    ReplyDelete
  135. I don't get why people call the Muscle Buster a "safe" move. That move is fucky scary.

    ReplyDelete
  136. I'm just thankful for my polka dots.

    ReplyDelete
  137. The hard part is creating it before airtime.

    ReplyDelete
  138. jacques rougeau

    ReplyDelete
  139. it's, dare I say, respectable now. That's just weird to type

    ReplyDelete
  140. WWE. Time to move Dusty from Then to Forever.

    ReplyDelete
  141. FROM OUTTA NOWHERE!

    ReplyDelete
  142. It's too late to add anything once they've already sent the tape out. We learned that back in '05 when they couldn't remove the Muhammad Hassan terrorist stuff that just so happened to air on the day of the London Bombings.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Remember the SNL episode where Tom Brokaw was recording obits for Gerald Ford? That stuff legit happens. I think WWE has that kind of thing ready to go at a moments notice.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Extant1979 - Extreme SuperstarJune 11, 2015 at 6:01 PM

More than likely an opening title card shouldn't be that tough to toss out in a few hours.

    ReplyDelete
  145. They seriously didn't put at least a quick statement before the show opened?

    ReplyDelete
  146. Even odds they forgot it airs Thursday nights?

    ReplyDelete
  147. Extant1979 - Extreme SuperstarJune 11, 2015 at 6:04 PM

It's possible the show was already sent to the Network and they couldn't change it?

    ReplyDelete
  148. I'm sad about dusty. I hate experiencing childhood heroes pass away. I waa startled seeing how much weight he lost on the WM pee show, but all indications were he waa getting healthier. Sad, so sad.

    ReplyDelete
  149. It's a shame broadband was created 15 years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Apparently tougher than you think.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Not even an "In Memory Of" graphic at the beginning? WTF WWE?

    ReplyDelete
  152. Extant1979 - Extreme SuperstarJune 11, 2015 at 6:05 PM

Country singer Randy Howard killed in a Tennessee gunfight? I think he probably wins most fucked up death, no?

    ReplyDelete
  153. WM pee show? That's actually pretty good.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Tuned into Smackdown for the first time in years. Saw no opening graphic for Dusty.

Well, Law and Order: SVU reruns it is.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Apparently tougher than you think!

    ReplyDelete
  156. Those shows get sent to SyFy on Wednesday.

    ReplyDelete
  157. IT'S THE ASCENSION!

    Oh wait it's Seth Rollins.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Lol I fixed it. Autocorrect never fixes the stuff that needs it!

    ReplyDelete
  159. Just Googled him and...WHOOOOOOOO! OUTLAW COUNTRY!

    ReplyDelete
  160. "It still feels like it's Tuesday to me, today." Oh, Dean.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Extant1979 - Extreme SuperstarJune 11, 2015 at 6:09 PM

I had no idea who he was, just saw the headline.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Extant1979 - Extreme SuperstarJune 11, 2015 at 6:09 PM

    Wink, wink, nudge nudge.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Being put into a match with Dolph Ziggler really isn't a punishment.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Meh. Is it sad that I'm not interested in Dolph v. Seth anymore?

    ReplyDelete
  165. Yeah guys, most networks have a certain way of doing things. You send a final copy of a show out, that's what gets aired. It's out of WWE's hands.

    ReplyDelete
  166. I've noticed I'm becoming my parents with their rule about no phone at dinner. With work email and texts and such it's great to not look at the fucking thing

    ReplyDelete
  167. Yeah, it's only Dusty. It's not like Vince or Hogan died.

    ReplyDelete
  168. What's the point of having dinner together if you are going to stare at the phone? Makes more sense to eat alone and just text your parents.

    ReplyDelete
  169. People are becoming more and more obsessed with their phones. Terminator was right.

    ReplyDelete
  170. I live by myself but it's just nice to sit at complete peace while my phone is upstairs.

    ReplyDelete
  171. It's depressing and I'm one of them. Have my nose buried in the thing all fucking day.

    ReplyDelete
  172. I'll be apart from my phone for hours on the weekend at it's really wonderful.

    ReplyDelete
  173. I went to a SuperBowl party the year the Ravens and 49ers played. Everyone was tweeting and stuff the whole time. I'm like why couldn't ya'll just let me stay home?

    ReplyDelete
  174. I'm betting that the copy of the show, including graphics and videos, was sent to the network before the news about Dusty broke.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Yeah it's a breath of fresh air for sure

    ReplyDelete
  176. I still don't know who he is, but seeing those two words in the first line of every article that popped up triggered an Archer flashback.

    ReplyDelete
  177. I saw something on the local news the other night that was disturbing. They had a local doctor on and he was showing the anchors and the viewers neck stretches for "text neck". They also said that there is a medical condition now that people develop when they don't have their phones. It's a form of withdrawal.

    ReplyDelete
  178. Basically when your married it's just a wife pager anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  179. Your typo version was actually quite witty.

    ReplyDelete
  180. sometimes I don't pay my phone bill and I only pay when I really need the phone back on.

    ReplyDelete
  181. Every place nowadays has at least 90% of people under 45 on their phones. Restaurants, sports games, bars, etc. I don't understand how that can be fun.

    ReplyDelete
