Non-Wrestling Podcast Plug

Hey boss.
Been a long time reader - think I got onboard around your awesome King Lear rant back in the day.
So I come knocking with hat in hand asking you to plug something that benefits you in... no way really.

We've started up a new podcast company called Tall Can Audio.  At launch we have 2 shows. Tall Can Sports which covers, if you can believe it, sports. The other is Audio Whiplash which covers whatever is topical at the time.

Today's TCS was a recap of the Memorial Cup and preview of the Stanley Cup Final while the most recent Audio Whiplash focused on the good and bad of live music.

We're based in Ottawa so you can expect a lot of hockey and Tragically Hip on these shows....

We can be found by:
Searching: Tall Can Audio on iTunes or your other podcast apps.
@TallCanAudio on Twitter or @TallCanSports if that's really all you're in to.
Tall Can Audio on Facebook.
Or www.tallcanaudio.com if you are in to unimpressive websites that serve no purpose but to post the shows.

If you're still reading this... Thanks in a big bad way.
Matt

Oddly enough, as a Canadian I was never really a fan of the Hip because they were horribly overplayed and drove me away after Road Apples.  However, after many years away from them, I've started listening to "Up To Here" again and holy shit is that a great record.  Once Gord went into a complete drug-fueled beat poetry meltdown in the later albums a lot of it became unlistenable for me (pretty much everything after "Locked in the Trunk of a Car" as far as radio singles go for me) but I can totally put the early stuff on my Google Play random playlist again and be fine with it now.

And enjoy the plug.

Comments

  1. I think it would make sense to put some people on tour while others stay at Full Sail: not sure you need a 'brand extension' since it just creates an artificial and arbitrary divide. Just put people on the road or at Full Sail based on what makes sense at the time.

    ReplyDelete
  2. This sounds like overcomplicating the issue - just say that the people that are ready to tour and be on TV get to tour and be on TV, and those that aren't don't.

It's not like NXT had a bunch of live shows to worry about, they do one every other month, and do a bunch of tapings in a row. Do a taping, then take the next few weeks to tour some people and train others, get back together for the PPV, repeat.

    ReplyDelete
  3. If NXT is going to be a touring brand, it should take over Smackdown's TV slot and just replace Smackdown.

If NXT is developmental, then they should do the RAW/Smackdown brand split again and raid all of the NXT main roster ready talent to supplement that, and run NXT as a true developmental.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I hate the term "brand extension". I would love to never hear it again.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Yeah it was fucking stupid. They should have just kept using the WCW name and treated it as a separate company.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I'll add that one reason people like Sasha is better than Bliss is that Sasha started on the indy circuit in 2010 and has a 5-year head start. Bliss may not ready to do touring shows yet, but when she is it would probably do her some good.

My final point - what's the point of a touring brand if you're featuring people who don't appear on TV. I mean sure some indy promotions are successful without any TV : but having people you recognize from TV will help get people interested in the show. It doesn't have to feature *only* people from TV and you can use these 'house shows' to allow people to build characters and get in-ring chemistry with each other without the spotlight of TV - but having some recognizable faces will increase their audience.

    ReplyDelete
  7. New Jack, interviewed by RF........ who's the bigger scumbag?

    ReplyDelete
  8. I don't really see Bliss and Carmella as the problem, though and, yes, there would be benefit in them mixing up with talent that's further ahead in order to learn. These are the talents that are, maybe, just a notch of two below.

My biggest issue here is your Baron Corbins, Mojo Rawleys, and Bull Dempseys, who were rushed to TV for various reasons despite being nowhere near ready. I understand Corbin has a great look, but all Rawley really had going for him was size. I think a Corbin could benefit from being on TV, but minute squashes get him nowhere and he looks lost going more than a few minutes. This, to me, is where the veteran help, your Kendricks and Rhynos, come in, as they can stay in the undercard and help some of these guys come along.....if they ever do.

    ReplyDelete
  9. If they pull the top workers, who do the developmental people get to work with and learn from?

    ReplyDelete
  10. It could work. Maybe give it a two hour show (I don't want to take away Smackdown, they already have trouble cramming people into a three hour Raw somehow), and the house shows are well received and seem to be doing well already. Bump a few people down who could supplement the roster a bit that aren't doing anything up top anyway - Ryder, Rose, Slater, Swagger, maybe a vet diva like Layla. Continue being a breeding ground for people like Breeze, Vaudevillains, all of the women. You could easily make a two hour show work weekly, it's not like even half the roster makes it on the hour shows as it is. Demand is there and talent is there, and the main roster has people on it who the fans do like but aren't getting a chance on the big show. Why not?

"Blow at High Dough" is that one song I put on when I hit the road for a lengthy drive.

"Boots or Hearts" is the sing-along. The only Hip album I have listened to from first track to last.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think that's part of the reasoning behind hiring guys like Rhyno and Brian Kendrick to work at the performance center.

You'd bring in a few more of those types.

    ReplyDelete
  13. NXT crowds are way too smarky for me. Having them tour would just create the same atmosphere. Guess you can't put them on the main roster and have them keep what makes them special, so I don't know what the answer is.

    ReplyDelete
  14. New Jack needs to be a commentator on Raw..................

    ReplyDelete
  15. Any crowd that showers Eva Marie with chants of "you can't wrestle" has my rubber stamp of approval

    ReplyDelete
  16. Honestly, I like not seeing the whole roster every week. You didn't see the whole roster on every show in the 80s, and that's when the company felt the "biggest," like "Well, Orndorff, Race and JYD are probably somewhere else in the country this week." When you are given the impression that the whole roster is there every week, it feels too small, like a traveling band.

  20. AverageJoeEverymanJune 4, 2015 at 11:15 AM

OOOOOONNCCCEEEE THERE WAS THIS BAND WHOOOOO . . . .

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well, they get too smarky in large part because it's the same group of people (more or less) week in and week out who eventually become part of the show. TNA and ECW had some of the same issues. Having them on tour would allow for fresh crowds to come in, who are there to see the show and not be part of it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree. Not having everyone on the show every week is a good thing.

    ReplyDelete
  23. They should get big show and kane to pull double duty and raise the profile of nxt

    ReplyDelete
  24. What I took from the interview is that Jack knew that Vince was bankrolling ECW from a very early point in the company. I suspect it was after Benoit and Eddy etc left in late 95.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Dude is a psychopath lol. He's always entertaining but it's kinda like Cornette where you just here the same shit over and over again. I don't know why guys like Nash, Cornette, and New Jack don't just tape record themselves and play bits they've already said dozens of times when asked a question in a new shoot.

    ReplyDelete
  26. NxT is one of the selling point of the network though

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yeah, but I feel they could still do a two hour show and keep it the same way. An average hour seems to be three to four matches, including a womens match, an occasional in-ring talk and a few backstage interviews, with a few "don't forget this superstar" video packages like the Sasha Banks one last night. A lot of time they rely on people like Blue Pants and other "enhancement talent" (I hate calling Blue Pants that, but that's what they use her for). Do two hours, six or seven matches with two womens matches included, maybe give Tyler Breeze an in-ring interview show (The Runway?), do a few highlight packages, a few backstage interviews, and they could still easily spread appearances so the roster for the most part isn't on every show.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I wouldn't do anybody considered a top name. The lesser guys, even a Jack Swagger as a former world champ, could share the spotlight and make the up and comers look good, like Rhyno is doing now. A match against Show or Kane is not going to make 99% of the NXT roster look good.

    ReplyDelete
  29. He really wouldn't be much worse than Booker

    ReplyDelete
  30. He was very mellow in his 98 ECW Timeline. He was soft-spoken the entire time. It was odd.

    ReplyDelete
  31. saw them in New York a couple months ago at the Beacon Theatre and Gordie's voice was actually back on track--not as much screaming as on other recent tours, and their energy is still as great as ever on stage.

    ReplyDelete
  32. But New Jack would often use a word that rhymes with Sucka.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Perhaps, like Mike Tyson, they finally found the right chemistry of medicine to make him normal.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Especially if it isn't a real second brand and just a different show under the same WWE flag.

For example, we HAVE a brand extension: The two brands are WWE and NXT. And if you wand to split WWE and NXT you could always do it without making it official. Just book it so.

For example because of the brand extension, we never got HHH vs Brock Lesnar (the natural WMXIX main event) or Undertaker vs Bill Goldberg.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I always appreciated New Jack matches for the insane, chaotic brawls they were, but the more I learn about him as a human being, I get more and more disgusted.

I have to wonder where New Jack the character ends, and Jerome Young the man begins.

He makes some very astute, intelligent observations on the state of the wrestling business, sure, but he takes perverse delight in the very real suffering of others almost to the point of bragging about attempted murder (though he certainly doesn't mind publicly wishing death on certain people).

Is he competing in a match or trying to act out a snuff film?

Jack also excels at playing the victim anytime he is asked about or confronted with charges that he went too far in a match. It almost speaks the serial killer mindset that no matter how heinous the act, there is always justification behind it.

Maybe I simply don't "get it" when it comes to the New Jack mystique, but I can't help believe the professional wrestling industry is better off without him.

    ReplyDelete
  36. RF, definitely....New Jack may have screwed a lot of people - that we know about - but none of them are teenage kids (well there was Mass Transit, but still......)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I still think WWE should have ponied up the cash to Goldberg, signed him for another year after WMXX and put him on Smackdown to wrestle Eddie, Angle, Undertaker, etc. Would the matches have been good? No, but I'd much rather have that than what we DID get on Smackdown in 2004.

    ReplyDelete
  38. One problem with Corbin is his finisher. I was actually shocked when he hit it on Rhyno because I can't see too many guys on the main roster willing to take that.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Please be my friend. There is no one else.

    ReplyDelete
  40. "Marie's" - grammar nerds

    ReplyDelete
  41. Definitely. Finisher makes no damn sense to me.

Look and gimmick are definitely something I'd want to invest in unlike, say, Mojo, who I hated within five seconds.

    ReplyDelete
  42. My friends and I called them "The Tragically Shit"- in the era before Nickelback, the Hip were played EVERYWHERE on a constant basis. Once Nickelback hit big, we'd find out what REAL overplaying was all about... You don't want to mix Canadian Content regulations with actual commercial popularity.

    ReplyDelete
  43. "Who put the dog in the dog house?"

    "You did, baby- you did."

    ReplyDelete
  44. that was the original idea with Shane running that show. In a shocking change of form, Vince decided against it at the last minute. I think the old man REALLY didn't want Shane running things because it felt like any little idea he had was taken away from him. See Also: ECW Internet Show.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I disagree that Triple H vs Brock Lesnar was the natural WM19 main event.

There was something glorious about putting two strong collegiate amateur wrestlers against each other--knowing that Lesnar could go with Angle as a wrestler and that Angle was beefy enough to not just be crushed by Lesnar's power.

Triple H...wouldn't have let Lesnar go over him. (The only benefit to pairing Trips with the Viking Space Lord at WM19 would have been not letting racism win by burying Booker T.)

    ReplyDelete
  46. It pretty much is this, a lot of the devloping home grown talent have not appeared on tv (other than as occasional unnamed jobbers), but work a lot of the small Florida house shows, while the bigger names and more ready performers work the TV tapings and bigger house shows (although of course they always have a couple of them work the local Florida house shows as well to keep the Florida fans from feeling too jipped).

    ReplyDelete
  47. You also have the fact that WWE has a talent sharing deal with Full Sail. The Full Sail students get on the job training and WWE saves a lot of money on production people and venue.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I like the nxt crowd for the most part, but sometimes they try and get too cute. Chants like "Marking out, marking out" make me roll my eyes.

    ReplyDelete
  49. New Jack, try not to hold back next time. What do you really think about these people?

    ReplyDelete
  50. I personally think Corbin's finisher would be better if it was just a lifting reverse STO, because I find the set-up where he lowers the opponent down to be kinda unnecessary.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Weird Al made a good parody of "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm".

    ReplyDelete
  52. You get a billion points for the obscurer reference and are now my favourite BoDer by a landslide.

    ReplyDelete
  53. haha, it's always the most-iconic CTD song to me. It's just so silly! Isn't the video a little dude controlling a giant guy with pullies and stuff inside his head?

    ReplyDelete
  54. AnInternetToughGuyJune 4, 2015 at 2:11 PM

I would've been alright with a 2004 title reign by Billiam Goldsburgh

    ReplyDelete
  55. I'd rather hear that every other word than the following exchange:

Booker: I JUST WANNA KNOW ONE THING: IS BRAY WYATT OUT HERE PER THE AUTHORITY?

Cole: Well, the Authority made the match, so yeah?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Could be multiple Eva Maries.

    ReplyDelete
  57. The first part of the shoot reminded me of the comments section of a typical Yahoo! story. Incoherent screaming, ranting, raving, and name calling. Good job as usual, Bayless. I think you are on point with this being Jack's new business model. He's probably done more shoots than Cornette has at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I also am not a huge Full Sail Crowd fan, for the same reasons the Impact Zone bugged me. But at least they're enthusiastic most of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Johnny Gargano and Chuck Taylor are both getting tryouts.

    ReplyDelete
  60. If there are multiple Eva Maries, God help us all.

    ReplyDelete
  61. ThebrazilianpsychoJune 4, 2015 at 3:22 PM

    Gargano has bigger chances.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'm good with the Hip up to and including Day for Night. After that, meh.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Holy shit I've seen The Hip like 15 times.
Their early stuff up to Day for Night is all pretty good. After that I'm a lot less interested.
Really good cottage country, sitting around a campfire music.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I think we both said that at pretty much the exact same moment.

    ReplyDelete
  65. "Who put Whitey in the White House?"

    "You did, baby- you did."

    ReplyDelete
  66. Man, Heyman sounds like such a POS.
That entire ECW locker room though. Nothing like that could happen today.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Ahh, this is the one "Doing Time With New Jack" kept referencing and cutting to periodically. Yeah, he's working HARD on this one.

    ReplyDelete
  68. While Heyman is no saint, New Jack is so full of shit you can smell it through this recap. Guy is a horrible, obnoxious scumbag of a human being.

    ReplyDelete
  69. New Jack needs professional therapy

    ReplyDelete
  70. stuff like that just take me out of the show and I don't appreciate it.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I can't wait for 1989 WCW As Told By New Jack :)

    ReplyDelete
  72. Is this particular show made for the benefit of the home viewer or the wrestler?

For every other wrestling show the answer is obvious, but I'm not sure about NXT.

    ReplyDelete
  73. New Jack has a mystique?

    ReplyDelete
  74. I think it's made for a specific fan. I just don't fit in that category which is fine.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I don't understand how anyone could believe a word New Jack says. Dude is a scumbag.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I love how New Jack blames Heyman for Duncum and Spicoli dying on "his watch." hey dumbass, they were both in WCW by that time and both barely worked for ECW. I also love how everyone tries to shoot on New Jack. yeah right. Since he likes to wish Aids, death, disease, defective children and other things on people, I can feel comfortable wishing New Jack a painful death, preferably by some young indie guy cutting his forehead too hard and letting his sorry ass bleed to death.

Oh and the idea of WWE EVER bring New Jack is so laughable.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I could't even make it through the recap. Not a slight against you, Brian, but rather my dislike for New Jack. I disliked him when I thought of him as an untalented garbage 'wrestler', but this just took the cake.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I don't know if I should pity the guy or just loathe him. Just delusional to the high heavens.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Given how New Jack is borderline delusional in almost everything he says here, I wouldn't be using him as the source for cracking the lid off of that conspiracy ;)

    ReplyDelete
  80. People push Cornette to get him to go over the same stuff. Watch his Back to the Territories or his ROH shoots with Heenan and Bearer, hearing him talk about the things he enjoyed in wrestling is still entertaining.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I like to think that Jack is an undocumented genius, someone who has a 162 IQ. It's more fun that way.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Its not like he sought out MT. . . .

    ReplyDelete
  83. He's been that way for a few of his later Kayfabe Commentary videos. I think he'd stopped doing drugs and drinking, so he's probably not coked up to the high heavens in those ones.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Jack says he was made to look like a joke in TNA and didn't wanna make it a racial thing but wonders why that was so.

It's because you fucking suck, dude. You ARE a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Speaking of, anyone else heard the Mike Tyson song that's been making the Internet rounds? A musician took a bunch of Tyson quotes and turned them into a actual song, and it's HILARIOUS.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Bet you wouldn't say that to his face......

    ReplyDelete
  87. True. Cutting an indy worker lying about his age....or trying to have sex with little boys. I know which one I find more despicable

    ReplyDelete
  88. Charismatic eNegro Jef VinsonJune 5, 2015 at 12:32 PM

No thanks. He's not my type.

    ReplyDelete
  89. lol oh shit dude u got me good one!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  90. Yes, there's a great air of mystery about New Jack: nobody's quite sure how much of the hate sociopathic gangsta-thug stereotype is an act and how much is real.

    ReplyDelete
  91. This shoot is legit worth watching. A far cry from Jack shouting over Sheik and HTM, buzzed out his nut.
