Sheamus...WTF

Has there EVER been a more WTF decision than Sheamus winning MITB?  I'm serious, he was the last man anyone would've picked to win. Look at the other options:
With heel champion Rollins you have
- Neville - plucky NXT new-gen babyface who could easily survive a loss in a 20+ min main event
- Kofi - hell the freebird-style New Day MITB would be hilarious and of course he'd lose
- Dolph - see Neville
- Orton - so much main event cred, he would give Rollins a big clean win
- Kane - at least would've sense from a storyline perspective
- Roman - DUH.
Sheamus is fresh off losing to Ryback (!) in the Chamber and splitting a feud with Dolph before a few crappy TV matches with Orton. Nobody cares about him as a heel or face, he's almost X-Pac heat, so you kill the whole concept because him running out will draw groans, not boos.  Can you think of anything that made less sense than this?

Well, I mean, Damien Sandow won the briefcase that one year, don't forget.  I wouldn't call it the most cuckoo-bananas decision of all time or anything because at least Sheamus is a former champion and Rumble winner and such, but he just doesn't fit into the main event puzzle, like at all.  And as you noted, why have him lose the IC title match to Ryback and then come back and win the case?  Unless they just wanted to swerve everyone because Reigns winning would be too predictable.  But in this case, it's predictable because IT MAKES SENSE.  Sheamus does not.

Comments

  1. It's an odd choice, but a lot can change between now and whenever they decide to pull the trigger on a cash-in. Maybe the end result is everyone finally gets a Lesnar-Sheamus feud that people have wanted to see.

I'm kind of OK with them keeping Reigns away from the case...I think it works better with a heel anyway. I think they've done such a good job rehabbing Reigns as a babyface since Mania that turning him would be counterproductive at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  2. The conspiracy theorist in me thinks it's a troll move. Oh you don't want super obvious winner Reigns winning it? We'll give you the only winner that'll piss you off more. Aside from the finish though I thought the MITB match was great

It did look ridiculous having him win it then running the footage of Ryback beating him immediately after.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Saying he has "X-Pac" heat is overstating it.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yeah but his new entrance is great.

    ReplyDelete
  5. It's 2015...aren't we over that myth yet?

There is no "X-Pac Heat". Heat is heat.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Agreed. You know what X-Pac heat really is? Everyone sitting there quietly. That's when you know they aren't into you.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Vince just visualizes in running in and Brogue Kicking someone.

Also Sheamus wouldn't be a bad transitional champ if you write yourself into a corner, which they could very easily due trying to juggle this whole Rollins/Reigns/Lesnar thing over the next couple months.

Only if you suck my dick.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Meltzer said Vince makes a lot of these MITB decisions last minute.

He said the Sandow one, for instance, was made hours before the match and he immediately regretted it the day after and promptly buried him.

It's just an old man's whims.

    ReplyDelete
  10. To me, Sheamus is slightly better than Orton, who absolutely does not need the briefcase.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but an interesting angle would have been Kane winning with the whole concept being him hoarding the briefcase and protecting his corporate champion Rollins from having to deal with a cash-in. That would have been the time to go with the "will Kane turn on Rollins?" deal, since there would be actual stakes involved, instead of the time-killing nonsense we got last month.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Alright, I didn't want him to win but saying Kane would have been a better choice is incorrect.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Sandow winning it actually made sense because, at the time, he was an up-and-comer and it wasn't crazy to see him winning one of the world titles.

Sheamus was actually my second pick out of the field if Roman didn't win it because they always want to try to make him a big-time player.

    ReplyDelete
  13. If you remember that field, it was going to be either him or Cody. The WHC title picture wasn't setting the world on fire by any means.

    ReplyDelete
  14. X-Pac heat, originally, was booing a guy you don't like because of his performance. Disinterest had nothing to do with it. Specifically, go back to Invasion. Everyone hated X-Pac so much, not because of his character but because of is performance, that they booed him when he was a babyface and cheered the WCW-heel Kidman.

    It's changed, since, I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Sheamus has been around for what, five years now? They've had him feud with Triple H, squash Daniel Bryan, win the Royal Rumble and come out with a stupid haircut, so this is the latest (and probably last) in the progression of trying to get him over. All will be forgotten when he jobs in two weeks at Battleground.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Also strange considering he helped fuck up Daniel Bryan in their Smackdown match

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah, I think it's just the way he's been used. The character is good, but the kiss my ass feud with Ziggler, and then being thrown in the black hole of the IC Title hunt.

Like, if Sheamus was getting the pre-Cena Rusev push, people would be more into him.

    ReplyDelete
  18. This. Sheamus/Lesnar is a fresh match and could be fun as balls.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Why are balls fun?

    ReplyDelete
  20. No, he didn't. Bryan cut his head on a bump to the outside that could have happened to anyone for any reason. Sheamus didn't do anything there that countless other guys haven't done countless other times.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Sheamus sucks and needs to go away, like to GFW.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Is the idea to have the main event be so boring Reigns looks good by comparison?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Eh, I don't hate him that much. And no one deserves that fate.

    ReplyDelete
  24. There's all sorts of games you can play with them. Like Football or baseball or Soccer.

Then there's the more intimate games to play with a lover or a group of close friends after some wine.

    ReplyDelete
  25. is it time for Ambrose to ditch the jeans and wife-beater look?

    ReplyDelete
  26. There is nothing "plucky" about Dolph Ziggler. Him winning would've been worse than Sheamus.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It's time for everyone ever to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes, I think he's going for a casual look but it looks very uncomfortable.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Sheamus having it now probably won't affect anything short term. I'm guessing this will be tied into the "Big Fall Angle."

Either way Sheamus feels completely reinvigorated as a heel with the new music and look.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It's not the end of the world him winning, but it does look kinda dumb after they showed him losing to Ryback later in the show.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Doesn't it feel kind of weird that we're waiting a whole five weeks til the next PPV?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think it was just stalking waiting for an opening for him. He will probably float around for a while still. Not everything had to be immediate. Worst case scenario he gets an awkward Del Rio run.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yeah. They'll probably spend a couple more months with him aimless but kind of badass.

Worst case scenario he's Del Rio in 2011.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oi'm abowt t'takeawver da sex soided rang, fella!"

    ReplyDelete
  35. He's a very good power wrestler but his booking, like so many others, is stupid. He comes back after a hiatus with a new look and a heel turn (definitely the right move). He then starts beating on guys but then they start-stop his push so he loses all momentum.

They do this to guys all the time so it's hard to give a shit about them.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm having a tough time continuing to like Dolph. The 80s hair metal look isn't doing it for me either

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm really intrigued for witw today because I think there's a good chance he actually defends Reigns and says he should have went over last night

    ReplyDelete
  38. And for the record Sheamus isn't even close to WTF decisions WWE has done.

    Top of my head:

    Batista 2014 Rumble winner
Long Del Rio reign during Summer of Punk
18 Second Bryan match at WM28
    Jack Swagger, World Title contender
    Triple H over Sting
    Mark Henry over Ryback
Curtis Axel over Triple H via concussion

    ReplyDelete
  39. As garbage as Reigns has been in this role, he really should have won.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Stranger In The AlpsJune 15, 2015 at 7:39 AM

Meh. Sheamus winning it isn't the end of the world, as this emailer seems to think it is. When he cashes in, he's more than likely going to lose it. When Sandow won it, it had "failed cash in" written all over it. So does this one.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm a fan of Roman. The story is right there because Seth used his briefcase to screw over Roman.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It's different. I like that about it.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Vengeance 2005.

    ReplyDelete
  44. He doesn't even look like a metal fan. More like a One Direction fan.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think we're WAY past the point where the lack of long-term booking decisions should surprise us.

    ReplyDelete
  46. It's really tricky here. I floated an admittedly silly idea that the briefcase is like a bearer bond and some face (Ambrose) could steal it and cash in. That would be more fun that GOD DAMMIT PAL YOU WILL LIKE SHEAMUS GOD DAMMIT TAKE IT ALL YOU KNOW YOU LIKE IT,

    ReplyDelete
  47. The problem with Sheamus winning is the problem they have just in general with their product today.

IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU HAVE DONE LATELY. Sheamus lost just 2 weeks earlier, and also lost against Ziggler at his first PPV back. I remember watching Elimination Chamber and practically right after Sheamus lost they announced him in the Money in the Bank match. That makes no sense. Why does he earn that right? The What kind of threat is he when he wins at a 50/50 rate?

When he came back and they made him a hot heel and he plows through everyone in front of him and takes the briefcase, I get that.

From a kayfabe standpoint, why should Kofi be in the match? He has been in tags for months, doesn't seem like someone that should earn that right. I like Neville, but no reason he should be in the match. He debuted a few months ago and has lost frequently. In turn the audience does not buy them in the match. They existed just to do some jumps.

You actually have to push these guys. Sheamus will come out and brag about his briefcase for as long as he has it, he will probably still lose a lot on the way to cashing in and then when he does cash in he will have zero momentum and if he happens to win then he will be a non-credible champion with no heat and if he were to lose then he will be just another jobber and back to the endless mid-card he will go.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think WWE has a problem, and it is a good one, in that they view the ENTIRE upper midcard as equals. They can all beat each other or lose to each other.

    ReplyDelete
  49. What isn't fun about them?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Maybe we could call that Tensai Heat.

    ReplyDelete

  157. Jericho was doing a "best in the world vs best in the world" title match and hadn't actually won anything to justify it. He came back to win the Rumble and lost. He got a title match the next month anyway but was knocked out cold in the Chamber, and then he won some throwaway multi-man match on Raw to get the WM title shot. Jericho winning made more sense as his match was supposed to be the bigger deal while Sheamus won in 17 seconds or whatever it was and just pissed everyone off.

  161. Dusty wasn't exactly moving around with grace even against Flair. Some of his matches in 86-87 he did a lot of lying around in lieu of selling.

    ReplyDelete
  162. What did Dusty say to the doctor as he was about to shock him with the defibrillator?

    MAKE IT GOOD!

    ...too soon?

    Heh. Conference call right now.

They talked about "overbooking" and I immediately thought of the Attitude Era.

  164. And only THAT'S notable for Scott's review:

"HTM punching him in the stomach? You might as well try melting an iceberg with a Bic lighter".

  166. As smart as it was for Reigns to lose at Mania it was equally boneheaded for him to lose last night. Are they hoping he gets face pops because he's a choke artist chump who can never get over the hump? And I don't see a feud with Bray Wyatt, the eater of pushes, doing anything for him.

  167. Reigns - Wyatt. Nope, still not enticing me to drive twenty minutes to see it. Need better.

  168. Dusty with a styles clash would be interesting.

He would have people participate in a King of the Mountain match for the last remaining hotel room.

    ReplyDelete
  170. You trying to say you are not into a feud in which one of the competitors beat the other at the end of a gauntlet match that took place less than three weeks ago?

    ReplyDelete
  171. That was due to the sheer force of Dusty's charisma.

    ReplyDelete
  172. That Attitude Era sure got a lot of "mileage" out of Austin!

HA! See, you work for the State of Texas (I think), whose capital is Austin and you seem to do something related to employee travel!

  173. Hey, you've discovered Bray's motivation for attacking Roman!

    ReplyDelete
  174. Bray can pull the Cena promo tactic of "well you didn't beat me three times in a row after running a marathon and being lit on fire so YOU HAVEN'T PROVED ANYTHING!"

    ReplyDelete
  175. I had forgotten that happened. WWE has become a stream of consciousness farce in many ways.

    ReplyDelete
  176. If they reference that match it might redeem the pairing somewhat. Somewhat.

Oh who am I kidding? They'll forget about it and talk about failure or something like that.

    ReplyDelete
  177. Dollars to donuts that never comes up.

  178. Stranger In The AlpsJune 15, 2015 at 8:26 AM

You're correct on the first two, pretty far off from the last one.

You remember way too much about me. It's a little scary.

  179. The HHH reign after the Attitude Era had MORE overbooking!

    ReplyDelete
  180. I'm thinking this is just a misdirection, leading to a Sheamus/Reigns match where Sheamus puts the case on the line (for some reason) and Reigns wins it.

    ReplyDelete
  181. Speaking of Dusty and polka dots - is there anyone on the current roster that can take a losing gimmick and make it seem huge?

    Maybe Sandow? Maybe Miz?

  182. Joey Jo-Jo Junior ShabbadooJune 15, 2015 at 8:26 AM

I've been watching this show on and off for years, and this is the strangest it has ever been. And Peter Bergman making zero effort to differentiate between the two characters makes it even better. He clearly could not give two shits about any of it.

    ReplyDelete
  183. Why would anyone buy Bray as a threat to Reigns after that though? He already beat two other guys that night after beating Bray, who was fresh. If its treated as a minor holdover fine but if they are trying to make Bray seem like a threat to Reigns, they shouldn't be shocked when no one cares.

  184. Daniel Bryan.
