Sporting News: NXT June 3 2015

Well we now know when and how they're getting that NXT belt off Owens, at least.  Not much else going on here aside from Bliss and Carmella bringing the hotness.  I JUST CAN'T DECIDE!

Comments

  1. If I may suggest something.

Perhaps a small recap of who's champion and what the major storylines are so people who haven't been following RoH have a clue about what's happening?

I like the recap style and it's clear to follow, I just don't know who like...half these wrestlers are and what their gimmicks are supposed to be.

  2. Half way through this occurred to me. I tried to include a little context stuff (Dijak's height, Moose and Colby's size, I actually spell out Whitmer's gimmick.) but you're 100% right.

So you think as a like a separate piece? or include bits and pieces in Reviews going forward. I don't want to make reviews too wordy obviously. Regardless I'll make sure I do some kind of "State of ROH update, either before next weeks recap or as part of the recap post.

Maybe because it's my first real episode, I thought the wrestling felt very crisp and smooth then what I've been seeing on other shows. And yes, the squash was the best part of the show.

  4. I probably would have had a more positive tone were this not the big "national premiere" episode. J. Deisel shouldn't be in the ring, let alone the main event.

It was alright, but I would have liked to see them have something really amazing out of the gate as a hook. there are 2 **** matches on an episode in a couple of weeks for example.

I'm glad you enjoyed the crisp smoothness! It's a nice little show to follow week to week

    I'm looking forward to it.

  6. A "Previously On Ring of Honor" deal maybe? Like...whenever the show brings up something you provide the background for it.

You did it a bit here with:

"-Looking to blend in with the usual programing of Destination America, the show opens with two hillbillies incoherently shouting. The gist: Lethal has been ducking Jay Briscoe for months, and that greatly upsets Mr. Briscoe."

I think that's pretty good, just maybe some more detail about why/how Briscoe things Lethal is ducking him (I dunno the face/heel positions of these guys either, so maybe explain if one of them is full of shit).

I think reminding people of what's up as the show progresses is the best result, because if you do a separate piece people are likely to forget shit. I think Tommy is a great model as he does quick, one-two sentence recaps of what exactly is going on with feuds or he explains what the big story of Raw was. Do what the commentary is supposed to do and remind people of why Wrestler X hates Wrestler Y.

P.S. You might be running a redneck wrestling promotion if two of your most important wrestlers have the first name of Jay.

  7. Whatever. GO HAWKS.

  8. Balor mastered the rollup. He's ready for the main roster.

  9. Jay Lethal, Jay Briscoe, and J. Diesel were all on screen at the same time. My jot notes are a mess.

  10. The question is this.

Is RoH a bigger hillbilly promotion than TNA? And are either of them more hillbilly than Smoky Mountain?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Nothing is more Hillbilly than Smokey Mountain.

ROH is wierd, their top babyface is a redneck in a confederate flag but...their top markets are all northeast urban centers. More geeks than rednecks.

  12. Well, from my understanding of wrestling history. New York was always the big, dumb stuff.

And while RoH certainly tried to be ECW Mk. 2, it was never as weird or lively as ECW seemed to be. The sometimes glacial pacing of their storylines and the emphasis on good, clean wrestling seems to be a NWA thing. So the southern mentality to their company might explain why there's so many southern wrestlers there.

  13. Silas Young - I just saw a match with him on WWE Superstars jobbing to Luke Gallows. Poor Young got bounced around.

  15. The more I look at your fucking avatar, the more it freaks me out. I see Jack Burton morphing into some giant-ass python and coming to eat me in my fucking sleep.

Which, coincidentally, is the Big Bad Rock will have to beat in the Big Trouble remake.

So, they've got that going for them.

  16. They're bringing back Thulsa Doom?

And I'd like to say that Tulsa Doom would be a great name for an Oklahoma-based punk band.

  17. Liger is still wrestling?

  18. Alexa Bliss has a wondrous backside.

Good to see you back Kyle.

So Corino is like the white Cheeseburger then, except he's a heel?

I would have Owens get fucked over by someone, Cena, Joe, even have Sami come out and trip him up, he can do that with only one arm. But the last thing Owens needs is to be jobbing clean to anyone.

    ReplyDelete
  23. That Tokyo Dome announcement is pretty awesome. I'd go with Joe interference to cost Owens the match, then you can have Owens vs. Joe either at the next NXT special or on the main shows, transitioning Owens away from the NXT championship permanently.

I agree that this felt a little ho-hum for their debut on a new channel. As someone who hasn't watched ROH in a few years I wish they would have done a more angle heavy show to help you get your bearings with the company. I know emphasis on in-ring action is what should set them apart but it felt like 4 matches was a little much and they would have been better served replacing one of the matches with some expository video packages or some promos.

The squash was really fun and was a good angle.

  25. Bliss, hands down.

  26. Do I bother trying to explain the difference between Long Island and Staten Island? Meh.

  27. Whatever, all of Boston sounds the same to me.
