Stip Matches

Sorry if this was brought up in any discussion yesterday, as I haven't been on the board much due to work. Anyway, as far as stip matches go, WWE '13 had a game mode that I always thought was a really cool idea, the "Championship Scramble."

Six wrestlers face off in a match that has a time limit. During the time limit,
many falls will occur. The wrestler that has earned the latest fall, either by
pinfall or submission, is "it". As long as they remain "it" when the timer
runs out, they win whatever title is being contested.

I feel like it sets the table for all kinds of chaos and crazy wrestling, and would be something really different.  Imagine scenerios where heels are just murdering guys who aren't even "it" just to take them out of contention, or where someone like Ziggler takes a finisher, then has to survive getting ganged up as the other five guys taste blood in the water and look for the next fall. You could even do the HHH Judgment Day 2000 spot where someone takes a DQ just so they can follow up with a pin.

Thoughts?

They did the Scramble match deal at that one PPV and it was pretty entertaining, actually.  I'm surprised they never tried it again.  It was 2009, I think, because Jericho ended up winning the World title from Punk.

  1. They did that with the hardcore title at a Summerslam or Mania, too, right? It ended with Tazz and the Hollys maybe? I think Hardcore screwed up the timing on the finish.

Maybe that was just a fever dream, though.

  2. It was Unforgiven 2008. They did 3 of those Scramble matches and 2 of them sucked. The PPV, however, was awesome since it had HBK/Jericho in a fantastic match and then Jericho won the WWE Title as a surprise entrant. Great PPV but the concept didn't work....definitely agree they should try it again.

  3. Wrestlemania 2000. Not surprised you barely remember it because everything at Wrestlemania 2000 is better off as just a dream (except for the ladder match).

COMPLETE FAILURES sayeth Scott about two of the scrambles.

  5. Hardcore Title at WM2000... complete with blown finish that ultimately led to Hardcore Holly calling Michael Cole "a little shithead" in a post-show backstage interview.

  6. IS this the match that Punk gets pulled from the Main Event after a beat down from Legacy?

That type of match is where we get images like this from:

  8. Yeah, that was sorta the birth of the concept and it was really born more out of the 24/7 rule than anything else. I assume someone was looking for a gimmick match for 6 guys that wasn't the EC at the time (because that EC was getting WHORED for a while there), saw this one in the history books and said "wait, what if it was only 6 guys and they all just wrestled instead of hitting each other with props?"

yeah nobody at all seemed to know what the official finish was or whether it was done correctly or not.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Meh. The problem with the concept is that logically, there should only ever really be one finish.

Once everyone is in, since the match as I recall is no DQs or COs, once you're recognized as temporary champion, there is no reason for you to continue to participate. Grab the belt, hop the barricade and head for your rental car.

  11. the little shithead comment was spot on though

  12. I'd almost forgotten about Legacy member Manu.

    "Little goatee wearing" shithead

  14. According to his book, Holly said that everyone in the ring thought they nailed their cues and the problem was the guy counting down Tim White through the ear piece. Crash was supposed to barely escape with the win. Hardcore said that the timekeeper fucked up but since it was only the Hardcore title they didn't switch the finish and just changed the title back to Crash on RAW. He also said they got lucky b/c that he and Crash had the same music b/c if it was anyone else who won the match by mistake, the Holly music would've still played and the other guy would've been celebrating while Crash/Hardcore's music was playing.

  15. Manu > Roman Reigns

  16. It's like the Hardcore Invitational, only inter-match title changes are not acknowledged.

I thought the Scramble matches were almost universally panned, and weren't they introduced under the Raw management of Mike Adamle?

Has it really been seven years already? If you're a new fan, get the Network and start watch the awesome Jericho heel turn and feud with HBK. Start with Wrestlemania XXIV.

  20. Never at all cared for them. The one at Vengeance 07 with Cena, Foley, Lashley, King Booker and someone else sucked.

Also remember the one that had Brian Kendrick in it for some reason...pass...

  21. I was there live at the show and really enjoyed it.

  22. I was going to post this.

  23. I like that the e-mailer saw the video game mode based on the an actual match he'd never seen and wrote in suggesting it as a new match type. Where does the e-mailer think the video game got the idea?

"If he did it 24/7, I'm gonna do it 48/14, and how bout I start with you...?"

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think that falls in about the same category as Jesse Ventura's "So he can just shoot him with a gun if they're outside the ring?" interpretation of the rules. The concept is great and has way less logic holes than a lot of their other match types.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yea what the hell.

Now does that go down in history, or does it just matter who ends the match with the belt?

    ReplyDelete
  27. AverageJoeEverymanJune 19, 2015 at 8:32 AM

Just who ends up with it

    ReplyDelete
  28. Good, cause them having a scramble match would give them a great opportunity to have Cena and Hunter 20 time world champions each

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wow 3 scramble matches on one show, about as great an idea as 3 PG Hell in s Cell matches on one card

    ReplyDelete
  30. Because they never make up matches for games? I've never seen a 100-man "Survival" match, like in No Mercy, but yet I've played that.
I honestly thought it was made up for the game. Sorry I missed the *one* time that they did it, ever.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Wait, how do you do a DQ spot in a scramble match? Is Vince Russo sending this email?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Heel hits face with ringbell. Face is awarded DQ "point," is made "It" (or whatever). Heel immediately covers for pinfall, becomes "It." Would be even more dastardly if a *another* face had been "It" but no one could beat him. It'd be a clever way to "steal" being "It" from an unstoppable guy like Cena or Brock.

  33. Unforgiven 2008, the Scramble show, was pretty great. How did that not turn into a gimmick PPV?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hey fuck that, The Brian Kendrick was awesome at that time

  35. A show without one singles match, ridiculous.

  36. AnInternetToughGuyJune 19, 2015 at 3:22 PM

they didn't even do it that often. I felt they killed it by doing 3 in one night.

    ReplyDelete
  37. They had one! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  38. I thought Beat the clock worked well on the games and to fill a tv show. They have at least used that a little more

    ReplyDelete
  39. Beat the Clock is really weird. It's always entertaining due to the built-in drama, especially in the last match of the night, but it forces matches to get shorter as the night moves on, to the point where the final match is usually guaranteed to only go 5 minutes at best.

    ReplyDelete
  40. True! With how long raws are would be nice to try another one and try to tinker with the length or something
