The Godamn Cena Sales Metrics

'In a word, yes.  On a recent radio show, Meltzer said that pretty much immediately after the first Cena loss to Owens, WWE got business metrics that indicated almost immediately that people were not down with the whole "John Cena doing clean jobs" deal and they made sure to put him over in match #2. '

I'm sure that I probably already know the answer to this, but surely the business was based for nearly a century on swallowing a short term loss for longer term gain? Is there not a chance that the financial losses would ultimately be recuperated, and then some, if they allowed the feud to really build and develop over a serious time frame?

It all seems a little myopic...

Yeah, but that's the business now.  Look at how Vince panics just based on the wild swings of the ratings these days, like bringing Brock back a month early despite having no clear story to tell with him as a babyface.  And now he's already ruined that bit of drawing power based on this past Monday's show going into the tank as well.  Vince books for the shareholders and everyone else books for Vince.

Comments

  1. Does Vince not realize that people don't buy or sell WWE stock based on one RAW's ratings?

Worrying about the week-to-week ratings made sense when Nitro was around. Vince should be looking at the long-term game, and ratings have been slowly declining for the past few years. THAT is the problem because low average ratings impact ad sales.

  2. If Cena's merch is way down, shouldn't that be a sign it *might* be time to turn him?

    ReplyDelete
  3. A publicly owned company must make as much profit as it can each and every month.

Executives also receive stock options that are only worth anything if the stock goes up.

Everything about a public company is geared towards the current quarter's earnings. Nothing else matters.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Cena's merchandise sells tons = Let's Push Cena More
Cena's merchandise sells less = Let's Push Cena More

    Strategy.

    ReplyDelete
  5. LOL, what? If the merch goes down from one job, why on Earth would they turn him heel? I don't think you realize how much John Cena merchandise is funding the WWE at this point.

  6. Jim Cornette shoot interview #65794!

    Give this man your money!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Raw's ratings went down by 500,000 viewers this week. He is going to freak out about that, as he should.

Now, his response is never the right and that's the problem.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I'm glad Cornette is talking about people he worked with in the 1980s because the world doesn't need another rant about how much he hates Vince Russo.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Oh, I know, but, if doing one job causes his merch to drop that much, it might be time to do something

  10. Is every other DU going to be about another TNA member falling off the ship before it sinks in dry dock?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Based on his reduced house show schedule over the last year and total lack of Smackdown appearance, Cena is not going to be a full-time work horse much longer. Based on his small role in "Trainwreck" and bigger role in "Sisters" he might actually be looking for a way out the door or to go for a Jericho/Lesnar schedule.

Hey Vince... think about the future.

  12. I would love to see the data that had them draw that conclusion

  13. More TNA NEWZ:

WZ reports that according to several sources within TNA, many talents (including some veterans)are afraid that the company’s July TV tapings will be their last. The tapings are set to take place from July 22nd through the 29th, with many of the days being used to film two weeks worth of TV. That’s enough to take the show into September, which is when previous reportshave suggested Destination America intends to opt out of their agreement with the company to air Impact.

The site notes that the subject of TNA being cancelled on Destination
America is a “hot topic scenario” inside the company as much as it has
been outside, adding that talent is concerned that the heavy number of
July dates have talent concerned that they won’t get paid for at least a
month after the tapings. The company has been dealing with several
well-publicized issues getting talent paid on time, and while the
company delivered on a promise this past Friday to overnight late
payments via FedEx, the number of times this has happened is compounding
    concerns.

Talent is said to be upset about the fact that the company has
lateness in pay considering they have fewer expenses due to a lack of
touring. The extra week of Impact taping dates also means that several
members of the roster had to cancel their previously-scheduled indy
bookings for that week, all of which they would have been paid in
advance or on the night of the show.

The site notes that emails being sent to talent are keeping an
optimistic tone and say that the upcoming tapings are for both domestic
and international TV broadcasts. However, there’s fear that if the show
does get cancelled, they won’t be able to get a new TV deal due to
    being “damaged goods.”

  14. Gotta say that Brock vs Seth is the weakest Summerslam main event of the decade.

Normally I'd say to throw Cena into the mix for a three-way, but they've already done that this year. Time to make an emergency call to The Rock and get the dump truck full of money ready?

    ReplyDelete
  15. The first paragraph explains why we are stuck with SuperCena for...well, as long as John Cena wants to do it. He is literally in a position where he cannot lose because the financials are so dependant on his merchandise.

This also highlights why the Network has been such a failure and is now ruining the overall product. If they still had the PPV model, they could offset some merch loss with a buyrate spike from Owens/Cena - the short-term loss for long-term gain the e-mailer discussed, except "long term" would mean 30 days, not 6 months. But since the Network means people can buy a PPV for $10 instead of $60, there is no bump.

    ReplyDelete
  21. As if they have anything else planned for Summerslam.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Yeah that's weird. There's a Whataburger across the street from the Texas Tech campus in Lubbock and it's normal.

Supposedly that weird "no orange" rule is the reason why there's no Hooters in BCS.

  87. She looks like is a legitimate prospect, even at 16 years old. MLB scouts are following her; she ripped a base hit at a tournament in Spain off a Dominican standout throwing in the 90s. Smooth fielder, good hitter; if she's borderline, I wouldn't be surprised to see a team scoop her up in the next two years just for the PR alone.

I think they get the belt of Rollins before Summerslam. The dude has been a colossal bust as champ.

    ReplyDelete
  98. It's a shame TNA is such a mess these days because with the shape WWE's in now, if TNA had the momentum they had in late '09 a "Monday Night War" might have made them somewhat of a threat. Just enough that WWE wouldn't be comfortable.

    ReplyDelete
  99. It's not a Jim Cornette shoot without a rant. At this point he's a more coherent Iron Shiek.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I've seen clips of her. She's definitely a legit prospect.

    ReplyDelete
  103. TNA's TV show has been very good for a long time now. It's the behind the scenes crap that is doing them in.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Did they have any momentum in 09? They signed Hogan, but they never stopped doing their usual 0.9 - 1.1s that entire year

    ReplyDelete

The pitching line from my fantasy pitching staff that saw action last night:

    14.2 IP 24 H 21 ER 7 BB 10 K

Woof! The ERA and WHIP might just be lost this week.

    ReplyDelete
  106. FG is still Top 25 in syndication ratings so there's still interest in the product. Of course, Seth can always say no...

    ReplyDelete
  107. Anyone get especially lit up!

    ReplyDelete
  108. The product was on a bit of a tear, and even that shitty first Monday Night Impact did the show's highest rating ever against the return of Bret Hart.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I hated that too and just reeked of WCW and showed how out of touch they were like the people in charge no longer watched current wrestling and still saw Jeff as a tag midcard guy from 2000.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Just goes to show what advertising can do. Too bad they are allergic to doing it now.

    ReplyDelete
  111. When they went to Monday officially were they doing 0.5s?

    ReplyDelete
  112. Stranger In The AlpsJune 24, 2015 at 7:41 AM

I had three starters: Chase Anderson, CJ Wilson and Chi Chi Gonzalez.

They ALL got lit up. Anderson gave up 8 ER in 4.2 IP.
Wilson gave up 7 ER in 3.1 IP
Gonzalez got hit for 6 ER in 5.2

The only decent outing was Craig Kimbrel who pitched a scorless inning, striking out the side and getting the save,

    ReplyDelete
  113. I think the ratings were slightly up on Thursdays for a while, up to around 1.2 consistent. But then the move to Mondays wiped that out and I don't think they ever got back up that consistent a number.

    ReplyDelete
  114. The Cornette trailer sounds fun. Vince Russo wasn't around in the 80s so there should be some good stories

    ReplyDelete
  115. Ouch. Wilson has been pretty meh this year

    ReplyDelete
  116. I have always appreciated them for keeping their in-ring work better overall than the WWE (WWE has better main event matches, but TNA's has a better flow). And the retcon of the Aces and 8s was one of my favorite moments that looked like it had potential.

  118. Stranger In The AlpsJune 24, 2015 at 7:43 AM

Last time out he gave up 1 ER in 8 IP and had 9 K's. His last few outings were quality starts.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Yeah, that's when the shit started to hit the fan. Their big mistake was picking WWE's hottest period of the year to start a competition.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Just the once, I think. It wasn't normally that bad. Here's the ratings for the year: http://www.gerweck.net/tv-ratings/2010-ratings/

    ReplyDelete
  121. That's not entirely true that nothing else matters, but there does need to be a game plan in place to explain lack of earnings if that's the case. In the WWE's case though, they probably don't have a long term vision to explain to shareholders that any temporary losses are an investment opposed to a true expense hit that wont be recovered.

    ReplyDelete
  122. If you had to point to ONE problem that did TNA in, what would it be?

To me, past the attempted Monday Night Wars, stupid angles, and lack of email knowledge, one problem always came to the forefront: lack of promotion.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I've heard both rumors but both are equally stupid

    ReplyDelete
  124. The JJ tweets are a bit embarrassing. "On the way to legal!" "Legal has it!" "Legal killed it :( " Why doesn't he just WAIT?

    ReplyDelete
  125. It always had a sugar daddy, and it never had to draw crowds, make money, or increase it's ratings. Thus it never learned what worked and what didn't work.

    ReplyDelete
  126. At least around here, Whataburger and Taco Cabana are the post-bar hopping hangouts for younger people. IHOP is where the weird methheads go, and we don't have many Denny's around here

    ReplyDelete
  127. Not much of a fast food guy, but it rates probably a step below five guys (like everything else) and probably on par with in n out. Southern chain, based mostly in TX and OK I think.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Yep. Giving Hogan full creative control, allowing him to push Abyss to the moon, hire his loser buddies, ruin the planned Bobby Roode title change, taking Impact on the road with zero promotion and 500 paying fans.... I could go on but those are the major issues

  144. "I'm sure that I probably already know the answer to this, but surely the business was based for nearly a century on swallowing a short term loss for longer term gain?"

Surely, but surely the business was not publicly traded for nearly a century.

Shareholders only accept short (very short) term losses if you have a concrete plan in place for how to turn them into massive long-term gains. Wrestling is not a business that allows for concrete long-term plans, so you get what you get.

This is a guy who has never run a publicly traded company, has no real idea how to do it, the problem is compounded by wrestling not being a business that's really suited to being public and Vince lived week-to-week for years. He's probably still locked into that mindset to some degree.

  155. It wasn't really official rankings or research I did there, just more of a claim that there are a lot of strip joints in TX. However, I never would've pictured Portland to have a lot?

    ReplyDelete
  156. You don't think she sees them as anything more than performing animals, do you?

Bobby's Burger Palace was the best out that I've been to.

  158. She learned from Jareett so it makes sense.

  159. No identity. When you don't brand yourself, others will do it for you and when the first thing they see when they turn it on is a bunch of no-names and a bunch of ex-WWE/WCW guys in their 50s and 60s...

I think she was on her way to tell them but got easily distracted by shiny objects and a sale at Michael Kors.

  161. Dixie doesn't care about talent.

From LOLTNA: "In a true scumbag move worthy of being bolded and italicized, people in the TNA front office reportedly told indie promoters to wait until the Monday after the news broke to book TNA talent, as "they'd likely be cheaper" then."

And making his daughter the focal point of an angle was inexcusable...even though it got us heel Tessmacher in leather shorts.

  164. Is it bad form to touch a gravestone that you're not attached to?
My wife brushed some leaves off the top of a stone at a cemetery on the weekend and got chastised for it.
Don't some people make rubbings of gravestones and things? I wouldn't be upset if someone respectfully touched one of my family's headstones.

    ReplyDelete
  165. I guess it depends on who it is, but most likely you and your family are cursed now for several generations to come.

    ReplyDelete
  166. She's half South American so she's actually sort of worried about that.

    ReplyDelete
  167. The name TNA. No one could take it seriously.

  168. I love it but I live in Virginia where we don't have it so anytime I can get it, its a treat.

  179. Always fun to watch someone in WWE commit Seppuku, I guess.

  180. That's a lot of businesses now, wrestling or otherwise. As others have noted, publicly traded companies tend to have short-term thinking/planning, almost slavishly so. And though there are many non-traded companies out there, a macro business culture has developed that only thinks of the immediate profit. No, not all companies have this sort of thinking, but far too many are setting the bar low. WWE doesn't have the courage to resist this kind of thinking, as do many others.

    ReplyDelete
  181. TNA was a boat launched with a hole in the hull. It was destined to sink--and very nearly did--until Dixie and her daddy's automatic bailing machine kept it afloat. That's all the company has ever done: stay afloat. Succeeding would have meant fixing the hole the boat was launched with, but Dixie is no engineer much less a competent captain. Last year the boat capsized, and Dixie has just been hanging onto the overturned hull, desperately trying to convince the other few straggler survivors that it's still a seaworthy vessel. Every few days another one lets go and swims for it, hoping that's land they see on the horizon...

  183. BMI is such bunkum. I'm svelte, but because I've got muscle and muscle weighs more than fat, I have a high BMI. It's such a weak stat.

Yeah, but face it the average American or Brit isn't built like Schwarzenegger in his prime. It's perfectly fine to use it when describing a set of the population

    ReplyDelete
  187. Most physicians are leaving BMI behind because it's not a great indicator for physical health. I mean, if you way 900 lbs. it's obvious that things aren't good, but honestly individual cases can show a pretty big variance.

    ReplyDelete
  188. The problem is unhealthy people then say "we'll BMI sucks" to justify saying there is nothing wrong

    ReplyDelete
  189. I never understood the muscle weighs more than fat thing. I mean, a pound of muscle is the same as a pound of fat. They're both a pound.

    ReplyDelete
  190. Not that you're accusing ME of anything like that! I'm 900lbs AND shredded.

    ReplyDelete
  191. Thank Superman our Help Desk guy is back this week... for whatever reason Facebook hasn't been working properly... and of course people have ZERO shame in calling IT support about it... so he gets to be the one to explain it too them, which is admittedly better than my "Tough shit we don't pay you to look at cat pictures" approach.
