The virtue of Super-Cena?

Hi Scott

I'll get this in before MITB in case they ruin it, but as much as we all hate the Super-Cena act, does the subsequent impact of Owens winning clean (and Brock's Summerslam destruction last year) vindicate it?

As bored senseless as I was watching Cena beat Rusev for months on end, I do wonder if that kind of thing is a price worth paying for the OMG moments when he does get defeated. Or is there a way of having our cake and eating it too?

Cena's US title open challenge was fine, it was the PPV matches with Rusev that were annoying people.  If Cena just did his challenges on PPV it would probably juice the numbers a bit because they could hype up mystery challengers and use random guys that they had no intention of keeping around.  Bring in one of the nostalgia guys like Sean Waltman or Honky Tonk Man for a one-shot, beat him, move on with your life.  Cena stays unbeaten, it's fun for the fans, everyone wins.  Putting Cena in "real" feuds for four months because they have nothing better to do with him is the real problem.

Comments

  1. I'd think Stone Cold is up there among the main selling points for next year's Mania

    ReplyDelete
  2. Cena/Taker was an intriguing match two years ago because Taker had the streak and Cena had the title. It was unimaginable that either guy WOULD lose and yet you knew they wouldn't end a Taker WM match with a fuck finish, so someone would HAVE to lose.

    Now? Who cares?

Cena's jobbing clean to the NXT Champion and Taker probably should have disappeared for good after WM30.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I have to think he'll be there, but it's hard to sell tickets based on the draw of Austin cutting a promo.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yeah he'll be there but he's not working a match and nobody is going to buy a ticket to see Steve Austin just hanging out.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I was thinking he could actually wrestle. It's surely WM32 or never

    ReplyDelete
  6. I think anyone holding out hope for an Austin match is destined to be disappointed.

    ReplyDelete
  7. It was CM Punk or never, it was John Cena or never, it was WM 30 or never, he has had a million chances to work and never has. After WM 32 it'll be "____ or never".

    ReplyDelete
  8. Yeah I suppose, but it did seem a possibility when he and Heyman were discussing it during the interview last week

    ReplyDelete
  9. Cena is due for some hair growth ala Sting 95.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Wait, did you just seriously suggest John Cena v. X-Pac or Honky Tonk Man on PPV in 2015?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I thought the time that roster walked on Raw it would have been fun the next week to use replacements from the past. Like old school Raw.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I'd rather see Cena wrestle the Elvis impersonators from the State Farm ad than HTM

    ReplyDelete
  13. I wouldn't mind guys like Shelton, Carlito, Masters, etc...guys fans know who can still go.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I enjoy watching Cena do his thing now, though the Rusev I Quit match was one of the most ridiculous matches I've ever seen

    ReplyDelete
  15. The SuperCena aspect isn't mainly that be rarely loses, it's that he shrugs everything off. He'll show up on RAW after a loss or ass kicking on PPV and tells meta jokes and smiling; he doesn't know how to sell a guy being a threat and how much it matters to beat him the way a Hogan or Austin did. He knows the words but not the music.

    ReplyDelete
  16. >If Cena just did his challenges on PPV it would probably juice the numbers a bit because they could hype up mystery challengers and use random guys that they had no intention of keeping around.

Disagree. Mystery challengers are not something you want to sell a PPV around, especially since it'd be pretty obvious the challengers would be guys on not on the PPV. So who does that leave you?

There's a reason all those you pick the card shows bombed.

The challenge works much better on TV than PPV because you can get away with having midcarder v. Cena on a random RAW rather than on a PPV where it would just end up being a big disappointment, especially if the choice was freaking X-Pac.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Brock vs. Austin, Texas Death Match! One can hope and dream, right? lol

    ReplyDelete
  18. And it gives Cena something to do in the weeks between PPV without sticking him in a fruitless angle atop the card.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh is Rousy interested in working for WWE? I haven't heard her mention it every 3rd day since Wrestlemania.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I don't think anyone expected Steve to say "absolutely not" and might as well leave business open than to close the door on it. I'm personally skeptical of Austin's drawing power now days anyway. He was once the biggest star in the world but in all do honesty that started in 98 and was over with by 02. He wrestled his last match in 03 and has really stayed out of the lime light both in the business and out of it since. There are kids graduating high school that in all do likely hood don't ever remember Austin wrestling.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yea. They even covered for it with the Rusev I Quit match by saying he would still have the I Quit match, it just wouldn't be for the US title.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Battle For Control Of The Company: The Rock (w/Ronda Rousey) vs Triple H (w/Stephanie McMahon
WWE Championship Match: Seth Rollins vs Dean Ambrose vs Roman Reigns
    Brock Lesnar vs Kevin Owens
    Undertaker vs Sting
Daniel Bryan vs either Shawn Michaels or Kurt Angle (the former, really)
John Cena vs ?????? (Hulk Hogan if Hogan ends up getting medically cleared to have one last match after all?)
    Randy Orton vs Bray Wyatt
    Guest Host: Stone Cold

Not saying this is the greatest card by any means, but I think it's pretty swell and a somewhat plausible one as well.

    ReplyDelete
  23. You should listen every 4th day. Its there

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think I am destined to be disappointed. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yeah this was bizarre. Maybe all of his recapping has convinced Scott this is 97. :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well Michaels has already said he's not coming back period and he's not coming back to face DB. I don't know if plausible is a word I'd use for a guy thats unsure if and when he'll return. I don't think Owens would look good at all against Lesnar. I think Lesnar is massive in every way. If Rousey can wrestle I think it draws well on ppv since MMA fans who don't have the network will pay to see it. Rousey vs. McMahon I think would be a big time ppv draw for the non wrestling audience. It won't sell any tickets but it'll get extra ppv buys.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'd be skeptical too but they're in Texas, where I'm sure it'd be massive news. Maybe they'll make him an offer he can't refuse. I wouldn't say there's no chance it's happening. there's definitely a chance

    ReplyDelete
  28. I do agree it's time he changed his look, get him some Boxing shorts to replace his jorts and proper boots instead of trainers to go with his new hair.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hah! Well said.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I don't remember Austin every selling a loss or even showing ass as far as a heel goes. He'd be talking non stop about ass whoppings before, during and after the match and he never lose clean the way people here want Cena to. If he lost it was due to 5,000 people interfering and "screwing" him so I can't really put Austin into this. Hogan I agree with though every monster of the month that Hogan encountered you believed was truly going to be the one to end Hulkamania.

    ReplyDelete
  31. 1. He's always susceptible to changing his mind.
    2. I said "somewhat plausible" for a reason.
    3. Owens looks just fine standing next to Brock. He fights a not-too-different style than Brock does, just build him up as a legitimate ass-kicker over the next year and then have them cross paths in an organic way.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Could they risk the fan wrath of announcing Austin then have Mr. McMahon do all he can to make sure that Austin can't wrestle. Austin tries to fight the man but McMahon keeps him away all the way until the replacement main event where The Authority seems to be getting what they want only to have Austin force his way in, KICKWHAMSTUNNER and the faces win?

Do you dare bait and switch a crowd of potentially 100K?

If it was Raw, I'd say they'd try it...but WM???

    ReplyDelete
  33. This. Cena looks the same since 2004, he acts the same since 2004, he wrestles the same since 2004 and he talks the same since 2004.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Austin was at least pissed. You don't have to act injured but you should act like it fucking sucks to lose.

    ReplyDelete
  35. As long as Cena sells tons of merchandise, and as long as the crowds are interested when he's out there, he's going to be a big part of what WWE does.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yeah I think there are a ton of guys you could bring in for a shot that were at that mid card level that are no longer with the company.

    ReplyDelete
  37. No way they'd get away with announcing an Austin match then not delivering it. Probably be some kind of no DQ affair if it happened

    ReplyDelete
  38. Austin would be very angry after a loss.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'd say the bloom is off the rose with Taker-Cena by now. Streak is over, Taker is old, Cena isn't The Man anymore. Five years ago, sure.

    ReplyDelete
  40. And they won't turn him heel until they milk every last drop of the good guy Superman act. Nothing less, nothing sooner.

    ReplyDelete
  41. This card sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't really care if Cena wins and loses. In some regards he should just have the belt and never get pinned until Vince doesn't view him as "the guy" anymore. It's kind of silly to parade anyone else around as champion when Cena has been the real champ since 2005.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I love that they are trying to rehab the US belt, I hate that Cena has to be the protected champion and it couldn't have been someone else. For fuck sake even someone like Miz.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The funny thing though is that the programs that create these... GSA, Magic Submitter, Scrapebox etc... were designed to spam thousands of comment links to help google rankings... then google got wise to it and changed their algorithm to compensate for it and make that no longer work... so what they are doing here isn't going to do any good anyway.

  52. Owens/Cena right now. Kid's a big Owens fan.

  53. Billy leading DX against the traitorous HHH could have been the #2 or #3 feud too.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Well let's hope they make a big deal out of the guy who finally beats him for the belt

    ReplyDelete
  55. I think Undertaker and Sting should tag team against somebody. Let them both retire on a win.

    ReplyDelete
  56. You're right that Austin pretty much never lost clean, but dude, it's nuts to say that he didn't sell losses. He'd be out for fucking blood whenever he got screwed. You can say a lot of things about Austin, but saying that he didn't care what happened to him is not one of them.

    ReplyDelete

    Undertaker vs Shamrock

The hilarity (and heartbreak) is that some people STILL actually spout that shit in all seriousness. Just yesterday, I saw some fucking tool, whose reproductive rights ought to be revoked on the basis of imbecility, driving a mini-van...a mini-van, mind you, that had a bumper sticker on the back window that had a picture of Obama with the slogan "Does this ass make my truck look big?"

  107. John Cena is Hulk Hogan if you ignore the Hulkamania sell-by/freshness date. They're basically the same type of character (Cena never gives up because of the fans: a toned-down version of the Training/Prayers/Vitamins mantra). Take Hulk Hogan, remove his Hollywood aspirations, the generational change which forced him out, continue to push him 6 or 7 years past his peak, and you have John Cena. The only difference is Hogan was a larger-than-life, campy hero, while Cena was a more grounded, realistic hero. That realism has both added to his longevity while also breeding contempt from those who hate him.

    King Kane....eh, pass.

King Show/ Show King....NOPE. Although "The World's Largest Monarch" has a nice ring to it. But...pass.

Was Shamrock a viable choice? Cannot remember. If nothing else, a Hunter repeat would have been historically interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Shamrock had already won it the year before. So it leads the same repeat thing.

Only other one that makes sense is Jarrett.

  150. Not even a little bit.

Cena holding the belt does zero for it, because as Owens has shown, beating CENA is more important than the title.

The US belt around Cena's waist isn't even a macguffin -- it's just some useless piece of clothing that someone will win when they finally BEAT CENA (which is the real goal).

Hell, Owens treating the NXT title as more important than it proves that in spades.

Sometimes, I...I can't help myself, but I DO wonder what the fuck these gun-loving white folks would think if the Black Panthers of the 1960's came back into style. Obviously, it would be fuel on an already volatile fire, but at the same time....I wonder.

Civil War, I would be on the Panthers side.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Billy makes the most sense right now, but he'd have been a much better choice if he'd been picking up steam leading DX against the Corporate Ministry.

The Corporate Ministry fighting a war on multiple fronts, with Shamrock running through the Ministry goons on the way to Taker, DX and Kane vs. the Corporate b-team (HHH, Chyna, Bossman, and Test), and Austin vs. Rock in the main event, ties the whole card together from top to bottom.

    ReplyDelete
  158. That works when you're a heel. Not so much when you're supposed to be a face. Because a feud can never have a satisfying conclusion when the face almost always wins, and the heels (the people we're supposed to hate) are the underdogs.

    ReplyDelete
  159. He can still jump his ass off, even as "The One" Billy Gunn, but he's not nearly as fast or sleek.

    ReplyDelete
  160. There would be laws against concealed-carry and open-carry, just like the ones that popped up in CA in response to the Panthers.

    ReplyDelete
  161. And eventually Rock & Foley pairing up for Rock & Sock for a few months while Show slides into the main event against Austin so that Shamrock can be beaten definitively by Taker. Test still breaks of and feuds with Shane.

All of the pieces are there and have obvious directions to go in. Russo just outsmarted himself.

I guess everyone knows now how good Taker/Shamrock is.

    ReplyDelete
  163. They won't. Dana White won't let that happen. Not enough money.

    ReplyDelete
  164. For two guys were around at the same time, Rock and Taker didn't cross paths too often. I think this is their only title match. Except the three way with Angle in 02 if that counts.

    ReplyDelete
  165. In my opinion, it is not that plausible. Hogan has had a hip replacement, a knee replacement and surgery on the other knee. He is over 60. He is not wrestling. If Shawn was going to come back to wrestle Bryan, he would have done so by now.

  170. I think John Oliver said it best, one person brings a bomb in his shoe on an airplane and we suddenly beef up security at an airport to the point where everyone has to take their shoes off, but a bunch of school shootings where little children are losing their lives and nothing gets done because SECOND AMENDMENT!

I'll ask again: have they made sure that they'll actually have Rock for a match? A cameo is one thing, but you can't wait until November to decide to book the guy and then panic if his schedule doesn't allow it. Hopefully it's all been sorted out, for WWE's sake anyhow, but if not...yikes.

    ReplyDelete
  172. That gives you a top-to-bottom cohesive product all the way through Summerslam, then Rock, Foley, HHH, and Shamrock (after destroying the Ministry by beating Taker at Summerslam) can carry the top of the card while you reshuffle the card in the fall.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Rorschach's JournalJune 7, 2015 at 2:13 PM

Most likely. It's fucking amazing that here we are, in 2015...and this sort of shit STILL hasn't gotten any better than it was in the 1960's. I guess, if we TRULY want gun control laws to get passed, having black people who own guns act like white people who own guns is the only way to get things done.

And THAT is depressing as fuck.

    ReplyDelete
  185. I think Shamrock was leaving at Summerslam anyways, so I'm cool with Taker winning. HHH HAS to beat Billy and Show beats Austin.

Rock, Foley, HHH and Show take over through the second section of the year. Rock wins the title from Show on Raw. Loses it to Triple H at Unforgiven. Triple H beats Austin at No Mercy and Survivor Series continues as normal with Show winning as a face.
