Hey Scott,

I wonder why these oh-so-many stale/buried/worthless under- and midcarders don't get cut or send off to NXT. Talking about Swagger, Barrett, Fandango, Matadores, Rose, Slater, Rosa, Layla etc. Also guys like Santino, Otunga or Maddox who seemingly get paid for nothing!? At least Christian could help out in developmental or sth

Meanwhile Tyler Breeze, Charlotte, Enzo/Cass or Sasha Banks are ready to freshen things up, plus they already feuded with most on NXT...why aren't they getting called up? Vince not caring? HHH wants to keep 'em to keep NXT strong? No storyline ideas?

Best wishes

It's more that WWE doesn't want any of those guys going somewhere where they can be a threat, so it's basically a bigger savings to pay them now and keep them quiet than it would be to let them go and possibly jumpstart a Lucha Underground, I think.  Look at how much it took to get Del Rio fired, for example, or especially Rey Mysterio.  And yeah, since the midcard is all clogged up with these guys, there's no spots to call up the NXT guys to replace them, and things remain stale.

  1. Interesting. Perhaps some of these "leaked" reports of midcard guys not being happy in their spots are negotiation tactics.

  2. > Look at how much it took to get Del Rio fired

It doesn't sound like it took much at all.

    ReplyDelete
  3. not sure some of those names match up. Stale is a relative term but Swagger and Barrett in particular are FAR from worthless. And the crowds love Santino for years. He was a comedy guy who was happy doing his comedy thing. He didn't rock the boat and according to Jericho's latest book, he was one of the most well liked guys in the locker room.

Nothing wrong with having guys with some name recognition that can do jobs or in the case of Barrett or Swagger could win the IC title or tag titles tomorrow without anyone batting an eye.

  4. A perfectly justified reaction to a racist asshole is very little.

    ReplyDelete
  5. probably are. It's hard work to make a living similar to "midcard WWE" on the indie circuit. Making your own bookings and travel, no fall back office to use when you might have issues. Even the so-called larger indies like TNA, GWF, Lucha underground, or ROH are like ECW in the 90s. You make them a priority, but you don't make a living just off that. Wrestlers are no different than the mid level schlub at Crappy products Inc. You punch in, you punch out, you take your paycheck and unless you have something lined up that is a guaranteed better check at Crappier Products Assembly, you punch in and out everyday.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I think Heath Slater jumping to GFW could really take them to the next level.

    ReplyDelete
  7. It's an interesting point but the audience is so trained. I remember being JARRED by the ending of a couple Verne Gagne matches on the AWA DVD set where they just seemingly ended out of nowhere with a pin. I've seen a few other matches like that on old house shows on the classics on demand service. Matches that went for 20 or 30 minutes suddenly ended with a benign knee to the chest followed up by a 3 count. So in theory I like the idea of surprise endings but in reality I've been so trained that I'm not sure how much I like them. That said, even in UFC, guys have pet moves. And the big punchers do their best to finish with big punches, so it's not that illogical to see the Bret Harts and Scott Halls doing the same moves each match, because they have proven to work for those guys and it's not illogical to see guys go for their finishers because those have been proven to work.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I feel like basically this post boils down to -- the WWE would be a lot more exciting if it even just paid lip service to the idea that it's a sport. Which is true, it'd make it a much more interesting and substantial product to follow if it wasn't completely neutered and awash in the vanilla tones of 'Sports Entertainment'.

Vince really did realize his dream to make it like "the world class entertainment" he always believed he was competing with and not other wrestling programs. It is McDonalds, it is Disneyland. It is the

Ice Capades. It's predictable and hollow, what you see is what you get and no surprises.

    ReplyDelete
  9. From what I've read, hasn't Lucha Underground been a pretty big money loser and their future is also uncertain?

    ReplyDelete
  10. The problem is that wrestling has been so overexposed to the point that everyone knows it's a work, so sadly they can't treat it like a real sport anymore and do quick finishes because the fans will feel ripped off because they see it as a show instead of a real competition; it would be akin to putting on a magician act and having it end after three tricks.

  14. Daily reminder Hornswoggle is still an active WWE roster member. 3320 days since his debut.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I say it all the time, but bring back the frickin' Brand Split!

Instantly you have two individual shows (as well as NXT) in which your packed roster can breathe a little, and you lessen the risk of your almost-top (as the truly top guys don't do Smackdown) guys being injured or burnt out, you lessen everyone's travel a little bit and generally you give fans a reason to actually tune into Smackdown at all.

It also means the NXT guys and gals who are called up can be put where they fit best - if (as was once the case) Smackdown is the 'technical wrestling' show and Raw is the 'wild storylines' show, then place the call-ups accordingly.

Was just watching Summerslam 2002 today and I loved the way the two brands had alternating matches with their own commentators (another bonus there - mixes it up a bit) and, by extension, their own time to breathe and develop. It felt like every match had a genuine build and reason for being on the card. When do you get to say that about a WWE PPV lately?

TLDR; bring back the brand split, use the full roster of talent!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh, and speaking of watching Summerslam 2002 on the Network, can anyone tell me why the Intercontinental Belt is blurred out?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I don't agree that the roster glut is going to keep the NXT guys from shining. Wondering why the Lucha Dragons, Bo Dallas or Adam Rose aren't working out would be like wondering why a 3-star basketball recruit isn't as good as a freshman at Kentucky. Neville immediately went to a good spot. He might not be getting a rocket push but he's solidly in the midcard, he's always on TV and PPV and he's over. No one stopped Owens from going straight to the top. No one's gonna stand in Finn's way, and Sami had debuted in a big way before a terribly timed injury.

    ReplyDelete
  18. That reasoning only holds up in court if you shot him and you're in Florida.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The end of the brand split was a USA call, not a WWE call. They wanted as many top names on Raw as possible. I

    ReplyDelete
  20. The WWE style today is completely sterile and follows the same formula. In big matches It consists of:
-Poor and confusing selling of moves.
    -Multiple finisher kick outs
-Nearfalls with shocking reactions of the wrestler not getting the pin.
-BOO/YAH PUNCHES (especially with Cena matches)
-Submissions are practically dead. A wrestler's signature submission has to be put on several times before even the through of a submission could happen.
-Finishers are getting close to being dead. Lesnar throws out F5s like they are punches.
    -TONS OF DEAD TIME.

Some will disagree and that is fine, but I find the Owens/Cena matches to be the example of this. The matches start off fine, but once they start to get to the end it is a mess. Hit a big move, near fall, look shocked, lay around for a few minutes, then do a few transitions until they get to the next big move/near fall.

They are great matches with the formula, but not so great as pro-wrestling matches.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I would assume so. They are only getting 100k viewers. Can't imagine the talent costs aren't killing them.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Matches not ending on a distraction roll-up or a bunch of inishers and near-misses to finishers would freshen things up immensily.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Old WWF logo. And it must be the DVD release they didn't bother edit out the blurring.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The brands are split; WWE and NXT.

All NXT needs is a supercard to build to the year around. And given recent events, bringing back STARRCADE as their big event would do the trick.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm starting to feel like all the homegrown NXT guys aren't doing as well as those guys that came in witha bunch of experience.

    ReplyDelete
  26. They could bring up the entire NXT roster tomorrow, it's what the booking team will do to the group that is our problem.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The "near-miss to finisher" is such an easy way to keep a feud going, especially since WWE insists on matching guys together show after show for weeks on end. Simply have a feud where one wrestler just keeps avoiding or countering the other guy's finisher to eke out wins, leading to Wrestler B getting more and more frustrated and continually demanding rematches. It creates an actual reason for a drawn-out feud, makes Wrestler A look strong for winning and even Wrestler B doesn't look all that bad since the implication would be that he'd win if he could ever hit his big move.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The whole "fighting words" concept is pretty interesting. I like the idea that if some piece of trash pops off with an n-bomb he can be summarily popped in the mouth.

    ReplyDelete
  29. In Bret's case, while he worked his 'five moves of doom' into most of his matches, it's also worth noting that he finished surprisingly few of his biggest wins with a Sharpshooter. Only one of his five WWE title wins came via Sharpshooter (the first one over Flair), only his first IC title win (over Perfect at Summerslam '91) and technically, his win over Austin at WM13. Bret was very creative in coming up with finishes that were a satisfying "end" without always falling back on getting the guy to submit.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Brand extension!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Is there any finisher that is still totally protected by WWE standards? I think it might only be the Red Arrow (only because Neville has only been around for a few months) and, of all things, Big Show's knockout punch.

    * Lots of guys kick out of the AA
    * "Kicking out of the Tombstone" was an OMG moment when Michaels did it at WM25, but it was played out at the next five Manias.
    * Pedigree is still pretty protected when HHH does it, though I suspect that'll change with Rollins' usage
    * RKO has been kicked out of in the past, though it still has a rep as a murder-death-kill maneuver.

They should shake things up in the undercard for sure. Whether that means swapping guys from NXT and the main roster, or combining guys from both, just do something different. Of course, then you have to give them things to DO or else they become the next perpetual midcarders clogging things up. For example, Ryder & Mojo as a tag team. Why the hell not? Why not put Rose & Fandango together as a team and see if they can do something with the Lucha Dragons or someone? Dallas to the New Day stable made sense. Send Miz down to NXT for a while. He can beat his chest about being a former mentor down there and act all superior to them. Enzo & Cass to the main roster should have happened already. Bring up Breeze. Hell, make that Corbin guy part of the Authority's muscle or something. Better than Kane/Show at least.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogJune 28, 2015 at 3:55 PM

The product was dull with two brands too. It doesn't help anything.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Back in the 80's/90's, it was very rare to see a guy kick out of a finisher unless it was Hogan hulking up. (Even then you had cases where the heel hit his move and inexplicably started taunting instead of going for the pin, allowing Hogan time to get to his feet and start shaking his head.) The whole point was that they were FINISHERS, and once the wrestler used them, it was all over. You didn't have, say, Koko hit the Ghostbuster on Dibiase and have MDM kick out to prove he was a badass....you just had Koko maybe tease the move once or twice but Dibiase would avoid it and eventually slap on the Million Dollar Dream.

Now, every big match seemingly takes multiple finishers for an ending. I like the idea of a guy having one absolute DOOMSDAY finisher they save for special occasions that is never escaped from --- Angle grapevining the leg on the anklelock, or Cena with the top-rope AA --- but really, anything built up as a 'finisher' should be protected. It's like WWE has the mentality that fans pay to see Randy Orton RKO someone, so that spot will be worked in no matter if Orton wins or not.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The Authority muscle guy is a missed opportunity to push someone new. I'm sure USA Network wants more Kane, though!

    ReplyDelete
  36. So everyone can complain about the brand extension again?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogJune 28, 2015 at 4:03 PM

Exactly. Would Titus and Baron make markedly worse "muscle" for HHH & Steph? Or a Diesel type bodyguard for Miz or some other skeevy heel?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Sting's first win over Flair was out of nowhere and I didn't really care for it. Situations like that you have to put the guy over strong. It was a fluke win when it shouldn't have been.

Flair beating Steamboat when his knee gave out on a bodyslam is fine because they were both established guys and the finish was a logical conclusion to the match. Sting's small package was completely out of nowhere. BULLSHIT!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Vince is will want a midget at some point, might as well have one in house.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogJune 28, 2015 at 4:07 PM

Exactly. People were talking about how overdue the "contraction" was years ago

    ReplyDelete
  41. The problem was Smackdown had a motivated Paul Heyman and pushed a more athletic product than the previous era (of Attitude) and Raw was just Triple-H revelling in his new found power, coming all over the roster. When the McMahon's realised an outsider was kicking the flagship shows area they kicked Paul out and raided their own brand until it didn't matter anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogJune 28, 2015 at 4:11 PM

The separation of "technical wrestling" on SmackDown lasted like a year at best. That was because they had Angle/Benoit, Guerreros, and Edge/Rey. Soon enough, it was just Raw-lite.

    ReplyDelete
  43. For like eight months.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'd say Titus would work. Plus, it would keep him out of the ring.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yup. Fighting words. Certain words or phrases due to their intent can be considered throwing the first shot. If $PERSON calls $OTHERPERSON by a charged slur, say someone called me a Polack to come up with a weak example, I'd be able to physically retaliate.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Most complaints were due to the lack of follow through.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Brian Cage could fill it easily

    ReplyDelete
  48. Turn Hornswaggle into a Machiavellian Tyrion Lannister character who leads a stable of wrestlers against the Authority outsmarting and outplanning everyone along the way and I'm in. Obviously he doesn't have anywhere near the acting chops of Peter Dinklage but it's an idea.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Great points below but I would also start moving back towards submission holds going back to being used as actual finishers instead of transitional moves that wrestlers take 5 minutes of agonizing pain before reaching the ropes and making their comeback. Submissions should be treated as legitimate tap-outs within 15-30 seconds and nearly impossible to break unless it's not applied with enough leverage or force. Nobody buys the sharpshooter or figure four anymore because they are ALWAYS escaped from.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Splitting the brands by show would be a mistake since the two weekly timeslots are not on equal footing or status. It would just end the way the last brand split did. Nobody's going to want to be on the brand with the lesser time slot and NBCUniversal would want to topload the Raw brand with talent since that's the flagshipo show.

If they were allowed to alternate the time slots between the brands on a periodic basis, there might be some potential for a viable brand split where both brands are treated as equals. Ex: Each brand gets a three hour Raw one week and a two hour Smackdown the next.

  132. Is Christian the only person to go to TNA when WWE was an option? Angle, Hardy, Raven, Dudleys, etc all went cause WWE didn't want them anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  133. He should totally wear a suit and tie with the Hanson brother glasses.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Adam "Colorado" CurryJune 28, 2015 at 5:23 PM

    R-Truth, maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  135. Well, Christian always came across to me like someone who was always bugged about the ways in which it was being used (or not being used), so the prospect of a main event run in a national wrestling promotion probably spoke to him.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Of course he is.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Suit and tie is likely not within TNA's budget though.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Something I wouldn't mind WWE Network to do is to have 1 match specials similar to no holds barred ppv or even Halftime Heat.

Example: They could do Cena v Owens Iron Man match for 1 hour.

  140. Sting could have gone to WWE rather than TNA but chose TNA instead if that counts.

    ReplyDelete
  141. They have the guys & gals, they have the timeslots, they have networks that can view them. But if they went in that direction again, someone will be the face of the program that shouldn't be. And HHH or Cena will show up to put an end to that.

  142. Adam "Colorado" CurryJune 28, 2015 at 5:25 PM

He can get one from Goodwill. He won't be getting paid, so I guess you can call him a charity case.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Yep. That's a good one.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Halftime Heat wasn't a one match special.

It had 3-4 matches on it. It's just the rest weren't in any way memorable.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Matches with HHH and/or Taker in 2002 would've been better than what we got this year, even though Sting tried hard at Mania.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Recent comedy movie recommendations?

    ReplyDelete
  147. TNA probably couldn't afford a used suit and tie from Value Village.

Is Elix Skipper even around anymore? Or was he in XXX?

Oh yeah, fuck off with the hashtags.

  150. didn't Nigel McGuiness choose TNA over WWE?

    ReplyDelete
  151. A saw that shortly after it came out. Pretty funny.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Is that the Jennifer Aniston stripping movie?

    ReplyDelete
  153. He failed his medical for WWE.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Spy has like 95% on rotten tomatoes

    ReplyDelete
  155. I don't know if he could have gone to WWE or not. But I know he got super over in TNA, kept winning the fan poll to get a title shot, never got the shot and got released in short order.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Adam "Colorado" CurryJune 28, 2015 at 5:28 PM

I don't think so. IIRC he was going to sign with WWE but flunked the physical.

    ReplyDelete
  157. I think he was offered a NXT developmental contract back when NXT was starting on it's current path.

    Still better than "Fast Lane".

    ReplyDelete
  162. I kinda like the idea of Super Slut Jennifer Aniston.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Makes sense. He made it this long

    ReplyDelete
  164. Adam "Colorado" CurryJune 28, 2015 at 5:30 PM

    I guess AJ Styles too.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Fast Lane and Stairs!

    ReplyDelete
  166. I thought WWE repeatedly turned him down.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Just watched Horrible Bosses 2 earlier today! The trio was way too dumbed down for my tastes but it was still enjoyable.

    ReplyDelete
  171. Over on 411mania, in the comments section, someone made a list of guys that GFW should sign. This is almost TNAMecca levels of stupid.

    ACH
    Alberto Del Rio
    AJ Styles
    Austin Aries
    Batista
    Carlito
    Chris Hero
    D'Von Dudley
    Edge
    James Storm

    Roderick Strong
    Tomaso Champa

I heard that WWE offered him and Joe a $500 per appearance deal and TNA offered them a much better guaranteed contract. They chose TNA, and I don't blame them.

    ReplyDelete
  176. Get Christian with Edge and they can kazoo the shows opening theme.

    ReplyDelete
  177. It'll have more shooting than TNA

    ReplyDelete
  180. I kinda want to see Shawn as a 1930's gumshoe now.

    ReplyDelete
  181. So Austin Aries is written off TNA by losing a match against Rockstar Spud of all people. Guess they are building him to be their next main eventer

    ReplyDelete
  182. Is there going to be a live thread for Slammiversary?

    ReplyDelete
  183. Absolutely. I have no doubt AJ is as big a star as he is now because he was in TNA and not teaming up with Evan Bourne in Velocity matches.

    ReplyDelete
  184. I stumbled across the best old school PI name ever on a set of curtains the other day. 'Ascot Valance'

    ReplyDelete
  185. Adam "Colorado" CurryJune 28, 2015 at 5:36 PM

I saw that. Wouldn't go so far as to call it TNAMecca levels of stupid though. Ciampa would be a good pickup for GFW.

    ReplyDelete
  186. I kinda suck at video games now... couldn't get past 2-1...

    ReplyDelete
  187. I thought medical issues kept him from WWE?

    ReplyDelete
  188. Also, I'm sure Batista would be all over working for GFW. Must be tired of making all that Marvel and Bond money by now.

    ReplyDelete
  189. How anyone bought him as a cool guy...

    ReplyDelete
  190. Adam "Colorado" CurryJune 28, 2015 at 5:38 PM

Wouldn't be an issue now, but AJ is a really religious guy and did not at all like the product WWE was putting out at the time. He's also said he doesn't want to be on the road and away from his kids that much.

    ReplyDelete
  191. Most recent comedy I saw that I really liked was Grand Budapest Hotel. Or a movie called The Other One. But I'm a big Elizabeth Moss fan.

    ReplyDelete
  192. There's not exactly a deep free agent market out there...

    ReplyDelete
