Why not go ahead and do Hogan/Warrior II?

Watching Summerslam 1990 the other day and Hogan's promo really seems to be hinting at a rematch with Warrior. I get having to move the show from the coliseum because of terrorists which was 100% real of course because Vince would never lie, but why still not keep course and do Hogan/Warrior II? Was he drawing THAT bad that they couldn't wait two more months?

If nothing else, why not keep Hogan going over Slaughter and Warrior be all like "I beat you before, I can beat you again. You and me at summerslam!"

Yeah, Warrior was drawing pretty bad.  But keep in mind Vince had already decided that Slaughter was going to be the guy around Summerslam anyway.  It wasn't like some last-minute decision where the legendary Hogan-Warrior rematch got shafted.  By the time that the Gulf War started Vince legit thought that Slaughter v. Hogan would sell 100,000 tickets.  Plus I just don't see the Hogan rematch being a huge drawing card with Warrior, especially with the result being such a foregone conclusion and the original buyrate being disappointing.

Not a Wrestlemania main event but definitely a any-other-PPV-main-event.

  2. Because I'm a nut, I remember waaaaay back when, during the reign of the Apter mags, that they ran a story that Warrior quickly invoked his "no rematch" clause before WM VI, and that the clause only had a duration of a year, so Warrior couldn't say no to a rematch at WM VII. Basically the mag took shots at Warrior for being a coward for rejecting a Hogan rematch.

    Ah, kayfabe.

  3. 100,000 tickets? I guess we should prepare for ISIS sympathizer Seth Rollins.

It's also funny that Hogan vs. Warrior didn't happen again in WWF, but they certainly re-did Hogan vs. Slaughter enough times!

  5. One of the rare instances of Vince being completely with current events. Unfortunately for him, by that point going to war didn't get the automatic patriotic response here. A lot of people were against that war from the beginning.

  6. One of the luckiest career breaks. One year earlier, Slaughter was on AWA TV with the Team Challenge Series.

  7. I remember Hogan/Slaughter at WM7 being a surprisingly good match.

  8. With the exception of a few botches (Adnan missing a cue on a spot, Hogan blading in full view of the camera), I agree. Way better than most want to give it credit.

  9. I don't know if I read it from Meltz or maybe here during one of the many questions Scott has answered, but wasn't Warrior's reign labeled a failure by June? It's insane to think they kept the belt on him for another 6-7 months after that, especially when they kind of demoted him into working 6-Man tags with the LOD and Demolition, an angle he had no reason to be involved in.

  10. it was also, in hindsight, something of a dream match. Since it wasn't until well into the 2000s that WWE bothered to acknowledge their past, but this could have done sick business in the early 80s.

  11. It was disgusting. He was using a legit war to promote Hogan. I'm surprised he didn't try again in 03 with 2nd war

  12. when you only had 4 ppvs, booking tended to be quite a bit more long term. I think at that point Vince was set on only doing world title changes on ppv. He broke that rule for Hart beating Flair, but otherwise it wasn't until the attitude era that a world title switched on a non-ppv (Raw episode Bret vs. Sid in early 97).

  13. Wouldn't have been any worse than Mr. America, a gimmick idea that was not just dated by a couple of decades, but played completely for comedy and ate up a lot of TV time to have a sudden conclusion thanks to a contractual disagreement.

  14. As I recall support was well over 85% in the general public. It was a very popular war and regardless of the politics of it, any evil foreigner vs. american has long worked in wrestling. Heck even with support for the 2nd Iraqi war much lower, Hassan was getting huge heel heat in 2005.
