WCW Worldwide: January 16, 1993

I’ve finally managed to get Worldwide back in the rotation – and not a moment too soon! Z-Man! Johnny Gunn! Nothing but the biggest names on the planet! TONY SCHIAVONE  and  JESSE VENTURA  welcome us to an actual arena in Alabama. Tony’s displaying a quality part on the mid-right side of his head, with the kind of precision that lets you know, yes, this is the 90’s.  PAUL ORNDORFF  saunters on camera, and he starts screaming about Rick Rude’s injury. He apparently knows exactly what needs to be done. And what needs doing? Whether it’s Milwaukee, or Philadelphia, he’s going to have a match with Steeng. What of Atlanta? St. Louis? Murfreesboro? Does “Steeng” not work those territories?

Monday Night Open Mic

Howdy! On the West Coast for some vacation. Talk wrestling or whatever...And Rick Rude's run with the US title in 1991-92 was better than anything Luger did with that belt. But Luger still should have won the World title in 1989 or 90.

Simulcast!

I think we're all set to go at www.blogofdoom.com , but really I don't particularly care which site you want to frequent.  I'll be posting my Q&A stuff to the new site, but the rspwfaq.net domain name is paid up into 2018 so if you want to hang out on Blogger and do your daily threads and stuff there into perpetuity, be my guest.  Twice the ad revenue for me!  The feedback thus far is that the new site is a million times more mobile-friendly, if that helps.

NXT - July 1, 2015

NXT Date: July 1, 2015 Location: Full Sail University, Winter Park, Florida Commentators: Byron Saxton, Rich Brennan, Corey Graves Reviewed by Tommy Hall It's the show before the big title match in Tokyo and we actually have a main event announced in advance. This week's big match is Samoa Joe/Finn Balor vs. Rhyno/Kevin Owens, which isn't exactly what the champ should be doing but it makes sense given the story. I can't imagine Owens is champion next week but I've been surprised before. Let's get to it.

Testing the site a bit

I've been playing around with the Wordpress setup off and on today, so you can check out the current layout at http://www.blogofdoom.com .  Disqus is now enabled and I'm trying to get it as close as I can to Blogger, and I think it looks pretty nice so far.  Plus now I can post to Facebook again automatically and other cool things.  Give it a look and let me know.

Samoa Joe & Cesaro

Short & sweet - Can you explain why there hasn't been any set-up of a Samoa Joe vs Cesaro match anywhere? Did I miss anything on this? Joe injured Cesaro's partner, Cesaro comes for revenge, they fight. Isn't this booking 101? You know that the matches will at the least be solid, and can be spread across Raw, an NXT special and then even PPV. Again, did I miss something or does Joe have to learn where the hard camera is? It's not like a lot of people know that Kidd was hurt against Joe, and playing him up as a babyface who breaks necks isn't exactly a PG-friendly character for him to have.  That being said, they should do Joe v. Cesaro because it would rule in general.

Goldust Questions

1.)  Do you know what the plan was for the Goldust/Brian Pillman feud if Pillman hadn't died?  They did a great face turn with GD with the interviews/etc.  Then after Pillman's death, they didn't seem to know what to do, so they VERY quickly turned GD heel in an unconvincing fashion and with various bad gimmicks attached to him until they were forced to turn him into a comedy character years later (which worked). 2.) Do you think GD could have at least gotten a 1 day reign reign as champion before transitioning it to someone else?  In the 90s he was very popular. Hey, something new to talk about! 1)  Yeah, the plan was for Marlena to turn on Goldust and go with Pillman on a permanent basis, although past that who knows because Russo.   2)  I dunno, really the IC title was about the top level for the act, and injuries were going to prevent him from doing much anyway.  I don't see why he'd even be in line for a one-day reign with so many other people around.

Screw it, let's do this.

OK, life's too short, let's give it a go.  For $10 a month with phpwebhosting.com , I'm willing to take another swing at Wordpress, because it's not like Blogger is going away.  So this site will remain at www.rspwfaq.net , and blogofdoom.com will be the new site.  If it starts crashing, no harm done, I'll just cancel and go back to Blogger again.   So, general questions, since I can do pretty much whatever I want with Wordpress: 1)  Should I configure the Wordpress site to look just like this site?   2)  Should we try to include an actual forum?   3)  Any other cool shit people want to try that we haven't been able to before? 4)  Stick with Disqus or go to one of the hip alternatives like Livefyre or an open source one?

Post Secret Wars Marvel Universe

So for those who haven't seen it, apparently preview cover art of all the new #1s coming out in October are floating around the Internet that shows us what the post Secret Wars Marvel Universe will look like. Probably of the most interest to the Blog as whole is that CM Punk will be co-writing a Drax the Destroyer (ergo Batista's character in Guardians) ongoing with Cullen Bunn To me the one that looks most interesting is Ultimates with both Spectrum and Captain Marvel as members. That and Thing is now a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the post FF marvel universe. Also of note Nick Spencer, who wrote the stellar Superior Foes of Spiderman, is getting the new Captain America title (with Sam Wilson in the lead) along with Ant Man. And Spider-Man legend Gerry Conway is writing a Carnage ongoing. Anyway you can see all the cover art here: http://www.bleedingcool.com/2015/06/30/retailer-posts-every-page-from-marvel-preview-book-out-tomorrow-marveloctober/

Waiting for the Trade - New Avengers

Waiting for the Trade New Avengers: Everything Dies by Jonathan Hickman and Steve Epting collects New Avengers (2013) #1-6 Why I Bought This: Actually I didn’t, I got it from the library. I had intended to buy this some day when I first heard it involved the Infinity Gems but then I bought the Infinity crossover trade by Hickman as a brand new preorder on Amazon for $50 and hated it. After that I wasn’t willing to spend more money on a Hickman trade. However with this now being the book that sets the new Secret Wars event in motion that is allegedly going to end the Marvel Universe I decided it to track it down and read it.   The Plot: The Black Panther reforms the Illuminati when he discovers that universes are colliding. Thunder - February 9, 2000

Thunder Date: February 9, 2000 Location: Myriad Convention Center, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Attendance: 7,124 Commentators: Mike Tenay, Bobby Heenan Reviewed by Tommy Hall The NWO has never had problems like this before! I mean they're fighting amongst themselves and beating each other up! Other than that, the question here is which veteran is going to rip the company apart tonight and then get a big match instead of getting suspended or fired like they should. Let's get to it.

July 4th Open Thread

The United States championship  birthday open challenge thread is now OPEN. Hopefully you're all too busy grilling delicious meat, drinking beer and blowing shit up to be here, but if you're like Cult and are scared to go outside, here you go.

Authority Eternal?

Scott, Is this it for WWE?  With everyone knowing HHH and Steph are taking over for Vince, are we left with an unending perpetual Authority storyline.  Will Kane and J&J just be here beating guys like Ambrose on distraction finishes forever?!  Consider this last year: Team Cena defeats The Authority thanks to Sting at Survivor Series.  5 months later, at Wrestlemania HHH beats Sting, and Authority guy Rollins wins the Title.  Now we're 5 months later again, NOTHING has changed.  Do you foresee anything in the near future that can deviate this because Raw's ratings are plummeting, and they keep giving free months away.  So pardon the expression, but isn't doing something different, dare I say, best for business? Yes, but the problem is that they've conditioned the audience to tune out when HHH & Steph aren't around because they know nothing of importance will happen, and then when ratings drop as soon they go, they get rushed back onto TV again to repeat

More Luger Flair Goodness

Scott, Just watched Halloween Havoc 89, on the network. The thing that stood out to the me most was how over Lex was as a heel, and how he could more than handle his end of a match as evidenced by the series of good matches he had throughout 89. I'd argue that this was his peak in the business. Why not have him go over Flair at Starrcade while Sting blows off his feud with Muta. They then could build toward Sting vs Luger and hold off on the Flair turn so that Sting has a credible challenger once he gets the strap as opposed to the Black Scorpion. Seems like this would make both guys in the process. Thoughts? I'm sure they would have loved that because they spent the better part of 1990 trying to get Flair to do a job to Luger, but Flair wanted to put Sting over, period.  It seemed like the right call at the time, but in hindsight I actually think that Flair should have just made Luger because Sting was a huge flop and Luger at least was a strong heel, as noted.

BROCK Lesnar - The BEAST in the EAST: Live From Tokyo Thread

Thanks to the paradoxes of time travel, I'm in the past posting this to the future which is right now. LIVE from Tokyo, on the AWARD WINNING WWE Network at 5:30 AM EST/4:30 CST/3:30 MST/2:30 PST. The matches getting the hype include Brock Lesnar's return to the ring against Kofi Kingston of The New Day, and NXT Champion Kevin Owens defending against #1 contender, Finn Balor. Enjoy the show.

Blogofdoom.com

Oddly enough, I was checking out eNom and it turns out that BlogOfDoom.com was available, so I bought it!  So I might start migrating to that address soon, because it's pretty awesome.  It currently redirects to rspwfaq.net and my gameplan will probably be to eventually migrate the rspwfaq.net/rspwfaq.com domains over as they expire, but we'll see.  At any rate, you now have multiple options to get here.

Disqus v. Spam

I too have noticed the ridiculous amount of spam coming through Disqus lately and the various issues with it, so here's the deal thus far: 1.  I've set comments to require approval before anything with links in it get posted.  Necessary evil. 2.  Blogger has essentially locked out anyone but Facebook from doing external comment syncing at this point.  I'm grandfathered in because I set up Disqus back in 2012 when I created this version of the blog, but if I ever delete Disqus then I pretty much lose all the comments forever and I'd have to go with either Google's built-in commenting system or Facebook comments.  So for as troublesome as Disqus has been, there's not many viable alternatives.   3.  I can't afford to switch back to Wordpress, so don't even ask.  The blog is too popular and server costs would far exceed what I make on it.   Basically, it's vitally important to keep flagging spam comments as spam when they pop up, because then Disqus will

htm main event

Hi Scott-any idea why Vince let HTM strong arm him with losing the IC belt at the original Main Event?  I know Honky threated to go to the NWA with the belt but, once he was in arena, couldn't Vince had gone back to the plan of Savage going over either via a "screwjob" or having someone like Andre or Haku convince Honky dropping the belt was best for business or had they already moved on to plan B for WrestleMania and DiBiase just got screwed by Honky?  Doesn't seem like Vince to let someone pull one over on him.  Thanks. Well I mean ultimately Honky was still drawing at that point, and as Honky has said many times since then, he just wanted to be shown a bit of respect.  I don't think he was seriously threatening to go to Crockett (and he couldn't really do so anyway) but he felt very disrespected by all the plans for Savage and Dibiase while he was basically expected to just drop the title and disappear.  And ultimately when the time came, he did business

Bizarro World

Hello Sir Hopefully you or some of the great commenters this board brings together can answer my question: Why were Ken Shamrock and Goldberg mostly booed by Canadian fans whenever WWF & WCW would tour? Maybe I'm mis-remembering things but it always seemed like the Canucks strongly disliked both guys.  Whilst I'm on the subject, wa there anybody else that Canada was supposed to like but rejected? Aside from all of Summerslam 2004, obviously. P.S. Love you. Aw thanks, Maffew, I care deeply about you too. Both guys were basically a case of who they were matched against.  Shamrock had the run against Owen Hart, especially at the Breakdown PPV in Hamilton, and Canadian fans were just really resentful of Owen having to put over someone they perceived as an outsider, I think.  Plus Shamrock always came off as a dick. Goldberg is even easier, because WCW put him against Bret Hart in Toronto and that was a losing battle.  Not to mention that Canada was always WWF-centric, and Go

Fall of Rusev and Lana

Hi Scott, Great article on creative's destruction of the great Lana and Rusev act. http://www.cagesideseats.com/2015/7/1/8878189/destroying-lana-or-how-to-kill-a-popular-character-in-less-than-60 All the best, Oh yeah, I HATE what this feud is doing to everyone involved.  Poor Rusev has to travel on the road with a broken foot, too, in support of this abomination.  For a while there might have been an interesting dynamic if Lana had used her boob powers to make Ziggler into a Russian sympathizer or something different like that, but having to buy these two as an onscreen couple is even stretching the bounds of believability for a show where Nikki Bella is supposed to be a dominant champion.  Does any human being who actually watches the show buy that DOLPH ZIGGLER, who even in storyline has always been portrayed as a shameless poonhound, would suddenly be a virtuous white knight for Lana?  It's completely ridiculous and out of character for everyone involved.  And yeah,

Draw, pardner

The question about Savage's drawing power got me thinking about who can legimately considered a draw... there are obvious ones like Hogan, Andre, Austin, Rock, Flair etc. Etc. But i was wondering your opinions on a few guys who have claimed to be draws or called so by others. I could list off many names but i picked these 10 1) LOD/Road Warriors HELL YEAH.  They were main eventers in the AWA and basically carried the entire promotion on their back for a while.  Everywhere they went, they boosted houses.  Until they got killed off in the 90s.  2) Vader Yes in Japan, less so in WCW.  His main title run in 93 was not exactly a stellar time for the company.  3) Scott Hall in the Razor Ramon gimmick He was never really in a position to draw on his own, but he did OK when he headlined WWF house shows against guys like Jarrett.  4) Dibiase Again, never really in a position to draw on his own, but his series against Hogan and then Savage in 88 did big business, and he headlined the

Thunderlips Lives

So here's an idea that'll sell 100k tickets to next years Mania. Hulk Hogan's last match Basically Mark Henry wins the IC title but keeps fighting jobbers, and the commentators bury him. They then show a virtual reenactment of Hogan vs Henry as the best of one era versus a guy from another era. Henry, managed by Paul Heyman for reasons, demands a match with Hogan. Hogan appears in front of a review board all "eh, Don't tell me I'm too old. I still got life in me." and they allow him to wrestle. Nick Hogan, dressed like a businessman, is all "Dad, don't." Hogan tells his son it ain't how hard you crash, but how hard you can crash and keep moving forward. Hogan vs Henry goes fifteen minutes, and Hogan leaves before they announce the winner to a standing ovation. We then see images of Hulkamaniacs running through Venice Beach as "Real American" plays over the end of Mania. 1 million buys, right? Look, it's not cool to toy with

Update on Potential WWE/WWN Relationship It has been reported that the WWE is indeed getting serious about making a deal with WWN. The word is that the WWE is looking to make a low six-figure investment in WWN to help them run more shows and sign more talents. Impact Wrestling - July 1, 2015

Impact Wrestling Date: July 1, 2015 Location: Impact Zone, Orlando, Florida Commentators: Josh Matthews, D'Angelo Dinero Reviewed by Tommy Hall This is a big special show called Bell to Bell, headlined by Ethan Carter III challenging Kurt Angle for the World Title. We're also coming off a pretty lackluster Slammiversary with the main story being Jeff Jarrett winning King of the Mountain and taking the newly created title to Global Force Wrestling. We also have a thirty minute Iron Man match for the Tag Team Titles so this is a packed show. Let's get to it.

Smackdown Date: July 2, 2015 Location: Giant Center, Hershey, Pennsylvania Commentators: Tom Phillips, Jerry Lawler, Jimmy Uso Reviewed by Tommy Hall There isn't a lot to say at the moment as we're getting closer and closer to Battleground and the showdown between Lesnar and Rollins. Raw mainly focused on Wyatt vs. Reigns, which is coming off as a strong feud with Wyatt getting inside Reigns' head, but I can't imagine there being much of a challenge for Roman when they finally face off. Let's get to it.

Low Raw Ratings

Hey Scott, with the most recent Raw (6/29/15) getting a 2.5 rating, the show is getting perilously close to matching some of its lowest ratings ever. My question is, will we ever get something similar to that infamous moment where Vince McMahon declared the beginning of the Attitude Era on Raw when ratings were in the toilet and attendance was down back in 1997, or is that an impossibility now? I don't necessarily mean that they would turn back to raunchy content again, but maybe a declaration that they are going in a different direction and having a reboot of the current product? Surely McMahon is, if not necessarily panicking, then is at least putting a lot of thought into these low ratings. Well, I can't claim to be a close personal friend of Vince McMahon or anything, but I'm pretty sure he's not dealing with this very well given that he already panicked and brought Brock back to TV a month early as it is.   No worries though, he has a plan that probably is to push

Macho Man and Cocaine

Scott,  Something that has bothered me a little bit recently is the theory that Randy Savage was all coked up during some of his classic promos. I'm not sure if it's more a meme or if people really think Savage was dipping into the nose candy. By all accounts the Macho Man was notoriously thrifty  making it hard for me to believe he would willing pay to support that type of habit. There are stories about how much he loved coffee, in particular I remember Warrior talking about them downing a pot of coffee before a match. Lanny Poffo has also mentioned on several podcasts how thrifty Savage was and that he didn't blow money on drugs and partying. Now I'm not trying to say Savage was a straight edge superstar, but I think it's ridiculous to accuse Macho Man of being wrestling's version of Scarface. I feel Savage was just that intense and talented.  I feel like maybe Warrior was using coffee as a euphamism for "giant bag of blow", because there's be

170ish-1

Scott-- You mentioned in a recent post that you didn't think Goldberg's undefeated streak should have been broken.  However that's simply unfeasible in the long run.  To that end, in a perfect world (one in which WCW is a competent, forward-thinking organization with their finger on the pop cultural pulse as opposed to their thumb up their ass), who do you book to hand Goldberg his first loss and how? I'm back!  OK, you probably didn't even notice that I've gone since Monday night for Canada Day festivities out of town (but sadly not away from the suffocating smoke that's covering the whole damn province right now) and post-dating mailbag questions, but it's true.   Again, why did the streak have to end?  Undertaker's streak certainly didn't need to end, and Goldberg still had TONS of guys to go through that they hadn't even touched yet.  Bruno Sammartino was champion for eight years before anyone got sick of him.  They could

No Saddam Way

Scott-- As a followup to my recent Wrestlemania VII question, suppose Gulf War I never took place (or, if you REALLY want to chart a course for Fantasyland, Vince executed a modicum of discretion), thereby nullifying the Slaughter-as-Iraqi-turncoat angle.  In that case, who keeps the belt warm for Hogan in the run up to 'Mania?  Do you keep it on Warrior and take your chances with a foregone rematch?  Pass it off to Savage for a couple months and somehow convince him to lay down for Hogan yet again?  (Thereby robbing WM7 of its show-stealer and Warrior of what is arguably the best match of his career).  Pull the trigger on a reliable mid-card heel like Mr. Perfect or throw money at Rick Rude until he comes back? Yeah, it’s a toughie.  Deep down I think they could have done something with Savage as a transitional champion if they really needed to, like basically putting Savage into the Slaughter spot at Rumble without the traitor angle.  He had pretty good heat for the whole deal a
