Bizarro World

Hello Sir

Hopefully you or some of the great commenters this board brings together can answer my question: Why were Ken Shamrock and Goldberg mostly booed by Canadian fans whenever WWF & WCW would tour?

Maybe I'm mis-remembering things but it always seemed like the Canucks strongly disliked both guys.

Whilst I'm on the subject, wa there anybody else that Canada was supposed to like but rejected? Aside from all of Summerslam 2004, obviously.

P.S. Love you.

Aw thanks, Maffew, I care deeply about you too.

Both guys were basically a case of who they were matched against.  Shamrock had the run against Owen Hart, especially at the Breakdown PPV in Hamilton, and Canadian fans were just really resentful of Owen having to put over someone they perceived as an outsider, I think.  Plus Shamrock always came off as a dick.

Goldberg is even easier, because WCW put him against Bret Hart in Toronto and that was a losing battle.  Not to mention that Canada was always WWF-centric, and Goldberg was (right or wrong) perceived up here as the guy ripping off Steve Austin.

  4. I think it's the WWF-centric stuff. Hogan, Savage, Hall and Nash were cheered in Canada.

Funny thing is while they were outraged by Bret being screwed and held it against Shawn for 10 years Canada really didn't tune out the WWF at all.

  5. Canada's crowning moment in crowd-rejection: cheering Victoria like mad for beating the shit out of the non-wrestler Divas.

  6. It was funny how post-Montreal, we collectively decided that "Hey! We can all cheer Steve Austin now!"

It still blows my mind that people thought Goldberg was a Austin rip-off. Their characters and wrestling style were absolutely nothing alike.

  9. You can't really deny that the initial "look" was all Austin - there's no reason that Goldberg couldn't have debuted with different facial hair or tights.

  10. They teased that a few times with her, but never really followed up on it. Too bad.

  16. Just curious, but what was the traditional Canadian "booking style". Was Stampede closer to NWA or WWWF?

  18. If there's ever proof that 1997 Austin was the hottest face character of all time, that was it. Even the 'bizarro land' thought this was guy was too awesome to keeping booing, despite his blood feud with national hero Bret Hart.

Austin's entrance in Montreal at No Way Out 2003 was one of his biggest pops ever.

Basically the same as WCCW but with more of an emphasis on technical wrestling. The constant feuds are the Harts and friends vs the new monster(s) of the month.

  20. But it was a Dominant Good Guys promotion.

Just the Hart boys instead of Bruno or Backlund.

How weird did their monsters get?

  21. I think they just look at it visually- soon after Austin hits huge, a bald guy with a goatee and black trunks shows up in WCW and gets a push.

  22. Austin also got cheered in Canada before the Bret feud. Soon after the KOTR win, he was getting cheered at the local house show in small Red Deer, Alberta- PWI even made a note of how unusual it was to see Austin get a big reaction from the crowd, and chants and stuff.

Granted, his opponent was the Fake Razor Ramon. You could have put Nikolai Volkoff out there and gotten a face reaction.

He's grinning like ''Ah is that how it is?'' as the crowd booed him and Batista after blowing a spot and start chanting for Christian.

Your comment has inspired me to make Tantrum-Mania though.

HBK getting annoyed at his match getting cut short at Beware of Dog! Orton calling Kofi stupid! HBK telling Bret to get the fuck out of his ring! Eddy swearing because Vickie missed her cue!

Pretty basic but pretty awesome. Guys like The Loch Ness Monster (aka Giant Haystacks in Britain) and Bad News Allen (Brown). And sometimes more technical guys would come in like Dynamite Kid and become mainstays. And of course your revolving cast of international stars like Bockwinkel, the Funks, etc. would come in and wrestle the Harts. Usually Bret cause he was the most popular. It's why I wish WWE would just release a best of Stampede DVD.

HBK telling the camera man to get the fuck out of the way during the Iron Man match and his tantrum during his match with Vader are good too.
