Fwd: WCW Desire video

Someone made a WCW version of the Desire montage video (the one that uses the Kid Rock song) that WWE made years ago and it's really good.
DAMN.  I thought it was going to be some wacky parody thing to highlight how dumb WCW was, but that one got me right in the feels.  That Sting montage was fantastic, as was the Horsemen/Dangerous Alliance/nWo thing.  Kudos to the guy who managed to edit it together like that.  Especially Hogan morphing from Hulkamania to Hollywood in mid-legdrop.

  1. Really good job, reminds you that for all the crap we give WCW on bad management and angles, that company really had a ton of great stuff to miss.

  2. In Scott's alternate universe, Bill Goldberg is the undefeated 3891-0 WCW champion in 2015.

  3. There's a simple reason why we didn't notice you were away - AFAIK no famous wrestlers died in the last few days.

Taker's streak definitely needed to end. The whole thing was pointless if no one broke it.

    ReplyDelete
  7. What....what is this liquid substance coming from my eyes?

    ReplyDelete
  8. That was pretty damn awesome. The originally WWF was always one of my favorite video packages they ever made. I like how the person who made this one did it in the same style as teh original. Very very well made.

Was it me or was this guy following the WWE policy of Benoit didn't exist? I don't think I saw him in there at all.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I was so so so hoping Hogan would've been the guy that ended the streak.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Damn. I shed a couple of tears. I know WCW is the punchline to endless jokes, but I grew up on the NWA and WCW, and my love of wrestling hasn't been the same since they went out of business.

Thank you to whoever did that. It totally made my day.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Can't speak for everyone, but I thought the whole Goldberg streak was getting a bit long in the tooth by late 1998, and I was totally fine with it ending by then. To Nash, not so much. But they needed to move on.

Also, to Scott's point on Bruno, that was a totally different era though. Bruno wasn't on national TV every week including ppvs. Probably not the best comparison.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I agree. When Brock broke it, it was a major mark out moment for me.

    ReplyDelete
  13. In a recent podcast he appeared on, DDP claims Sullivan was pushing for him to beat Goldberg at Havoc 98, but somebody (Nash maybe?) put the kibosh on it. Really, since they wasted the streak being broke anyway, they should have put Page over. It would have made him, WCW would have TWO *NEW* superstars to compete with Austin/Rock. By the time they finally pulled the trigger on Page, it wasn't the same.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Agree on Bruno. He was basically only over exposed in the territory he was in. And people still loved him anyways. Had he have been on National TV for 5 hrs a week for 8 years, things would've been different probably.

    ReplyDelete
  15. You can put this song to ANY company's montage, and I'd get the feels. Seriously, great job. Now where's my WCCW, ECW, et al?

  16. Screw you and your spam!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Did you smoke a joint in the back with RVD?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I always thought Goldberg would come back to WWE to be the guy to break the Streak. Some kind of weird cosmic justice. Brock really was the right guy though.

    ReplyDelete
  19. If they had done the Halloween Havoc match as the Starrcade main event, WCW would've done all the buys.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Once again, fuck you and your spam bullshit.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The video was made for the latest episode of OSW review where they're currently reviewing the lead up to WrestleMania 17 so they just did the last Nitro. Up next is the Raw from the same night. Check it out, there great. http://oswreview.com/media/oswreview51/

  22. Starrcade DID do all the buys. It did a 1.15 to Havoc's .78

One of my greatest regrets as a wrestling fan is looking up the WM results while I was at work instead of just waiting to see the replay.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yowza. Hogan/Warrior was an even bigger disaster than I thought!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Guys who Goldberg could've done programs with as champion:

    Hollywood Hogan
    Sting
    Ric Flair
    The Giant
    Scott Steiner
    Scott Hall
    Bret Hart
    Lex Luger
    The Warrior
    Roddy Piper
...as well as DDP and Nash

Some guys who were "B-listers" who could've eventually been built up as challengers:
    Chris Jericho
    Chris Benoit
    Curt Hennig
    Booker T
    Raven
    Wrath (why not?)

Pick any six to eight of those guys and you have a year's worth of Goldberg PPV main events. WCW eventually brought in Sid Vicious, Mike Awesome, and Bam Bam Bigelow, and those guys could've been added to the mix also, along with any other big names WCW was able to poach.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hulk finally gets his win back at Starrcade 2015 and they do 4.5 million buys.

    ReplyDelete
  27. OSW Review. Their videos are fantastic.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Freaking amazing video. Wow. A must watch.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Shit, I forgot they really built the show around that match. You could have built around the title match, Hall/Nash or Sting/Hart but instead they played mirror games in the bathroom with Ed Leslie. The build SUUUCKED, maybe the worst of all time, and the buyrate shows.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yeah, can you imagine what would happen in the modern era if the same guy was on top of the show week in, week out, for 8 years at a time?

    ReplyDelete
  31. That was well put together and the song was good. I suppose it would mean more to me if I was a WCW mark. Weird seeing 'Taker in fucking chaps and wrestling trunks, but I can actually remember watching him there before he made the jump.

    ReplyDelete
  32. This is your weekly reminder: no matter how bad RAW is now, and how mismanaged WWE seems now, WCW was worse. ALWAYS worse.

    ReplyDelete
  33. There was a Sting one I remember that was amazing. Assumed it was fan made but it was top notch quality

    ReplyDelete
  34. I agree. WCW demise non-sense aside, NWA/WCW 1989-1992 is my favorite wrestling era from any company

    ReplyDelete
  35. That leg drop morph...I wanted to leg drop the treadmill I was on. That was amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  36. People would have most likely grew bored with Goldberg and started booing him eventually (even more than they already were, as there were already a few "Goldberg Sucks" chants being heard throughout some arenas) if they never had him beat. The Streak could have lasted for longer than it did, but DDP ending it is just horrible (and I liked DDP.)

I would have either had maybe Scott Steiner cheat to beat it and tried to turn him into the company's next top heel as a result, or I would have kept it the way they did it at Starrcade '98 but actually followed up on the angle afterwards by having Goldberg tear through the NWO and eventually reclaim his title back from Hogan. Maybe in the process Goldberg leads a charge among the WCW guys against the New World Order that culminates in the angle being put out to pasture for good, too.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I watched this and the WWE one back to back. If you ever need a reminder as to why you love wrestling, those two videos do the trick

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yep. I was a WCW kid and always will be.

    ReplyDelete
  39. No need for him to be there, IMO. I didn't need to be reminded of him while reminiscing about my favorite wrestling company.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Honestly I can picture Pantera's Cowboys From Hell being used for ECW

    ReplyDelete
  41. During that early montage of the video of big rivals facing off, when Simmons is barking at Vader, I got goosebumps since I was a HUGE fan of Ron back then.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Does that mean that Starrcade 98 would not be such a terrible fucking ppv if they did something different?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Probably the best things in the otherwise dismal post-Attitude Era were the pop music video montages they made.

The original Desire video is their greatest achievement, but there were so many good ones.

The Foley-Staind one. The Benoit-Finger Eleven one. The Angle-Coldplay one. The WM22-Shinedown one. The Austin HOF-Living Colour one. Those are just off the top of my head. There were plenty more.

Hell, they made that Creed song awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  44. And that right there is why having a healthy number 2 promotion is important.

    ReplyDelete
  48. DDP and Nash were both red hot babyfaces at the time--crazy that just a few months later both guys were heels. Page was certainly deserving of a title run during his "People's Champion" phase, but I agree that there were too many fresh and intriguing match-ups for Goldberg to take the title off of him at all. Some folks were already getting tired of him, but they could have run with him until Spring Stampede or so.

    ReplyDelete
  49. They really didn't build any of the pay-per-views around Goldberg's match during his run as champ until Starrcade. Very strange.

    still *****

    ReplyDelete
  61. I thought we'd get through the whole thing without Jeff Jarrett. Then there he was in the final seconds.

Other than that, awesome. Glad the guy didn't include Russo.

    ReplyDelete
  62. The original WWE video is one of their greatest montage videos which I still watch to this day. This one was also good (and I'm surprised no one thought about doing this years earlier). My only criticism is that it was jumping from clip to clip far too rapidly.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Oh man, that shot of young 'Mean Mark' and young Paul E. Dangerously

    ReplyDelete
  64. Keep the Streak until the audience gets sick of him. Then turn him heel and keep the streak going as he crushes through babyfaces. Then give an up and coming babyface a major push by having him beat Goldberg clean. Seems like such a simple way to keep the money coming so I don't know why they ducked it up so badly.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I did it for you, ROCK!July 2, 2015 at 3:55 PM

They need to do an updated WWE one with the Sting montage. Except instead of Sting, it's Cena. Thuganomics Cena morphs into Marine Cena morphs into US Champ Cena.

He's literally the only one who has that kind of long-term one company career they can use.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Crowds weren't tired of Bruno, Bruno was tired of being champion.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I did it for you, ROCK!July 2, 2015 at 3:56 PM

Kind of oddly synchs up with Unified Champ, Jericho no?

    ReplyDelete
  68. As has been mentioned, I'm surprised this hasn't been done before. In some ways, this song is more suited for WCW than WWF. It starts in a southern-rock style, which is very JCP/WCW for obvious reasons. And then when it picks up into the hard rock portion, that suits the Nitro era extremely well, with their very conscious attempt to go against the grain. And heaven knows that WCW had plenty of past glory for the nostalgic sections. Very well done.

And I had to laugh at how the early 90s braintrust members (Herd, Ole, Watts) were shown during the "Dark Road" section. That was awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  69. By late 1998, Goldberg was well behind Austin and probably behind Rock.

  71. Does the Ric Flair feud involve a time machine?

    ReplyDelete
  72. and Hogan's Disney parade lol

    ReplyDelete

The Sting thing worked because HIS. LOOK. CHANGED.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Yeah, I'm not getting it, either.

    ReplyDelete
  76. That was absolutely fantastic

    ReplyDelete
  77. I don't think any of those work. WWF/E and NWA/WCW have decades and decades of recognizable footage to pull from

    ReplyDelete
  78. Nash's argument is that the crowd was turning on Goldberg. I'm not sure how true that is, but it is true that attention spans and good will have much less longevity in the modern epoch. I'm not sure they could've done a Bruno-esque streak with Goldberg.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I laughed at that too.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I agree with the DDP idea - the crowd was popping huge for the dummy turnarounds and wins in that HH match. Most of it was shock, likely, but it would've put Page over huge and the match was so competitive (coupled with a fluke ending) it would've been believable.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I liked Jarrett in WCW.

    ReplyDelete
  82. That was incredible

    ReplyDelete
  83. what are you a slapnut?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Russo could have been part of the dark times montage in the middle (though it's not chronological)

    ReplyDelete
  85. I've had some chats with this guy, very much obsessed with getting things perfect. His stuff is fantastic.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Pretty risky though. That's not really a spot that they can redo...if they botch it, they're screwed.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I mentioned this in another thread that for me the logic was to run the streak into the ground. Let him beat everyone until the fans started to cool on him (they may not have done) then do a gradual slow burn heel turn with him getting too cocky until finally somebody out wrestles him to break the streak.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Undertaker going from 'zombie old west mortician' to 'American Badass' to his modern-day look would work.

    ReplyDelete
  89. What a brilliant piece of business that was.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Charismatic eNegro Jef VinsonJuly 2, 2015 at 4:34 PM

They could have prolonged the streak by not having him wrestle every damned week. I'm not saying give him the Brock schedule but limiting his exposure until they figured that part out would have helped.

Of course we know that if he was undefeated by the time the WWE bought WCW HHH would have been the first.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Yeah. Given the choice between another Sheamus/Ziggler match and, say, Tank Abbot threatening to slit the throat of a guy who you're not sure who he is, why he's there or why it's happening, it's an easy one.

    ReplyDelete
  92. You are one of the few, my man

Eight years of aging? Also you can start with Thuganomics Cena with the US Belt, Supercena with the World and than back to Now Cena with the US Belt.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Awesome. Surprised they didn't have a clip of Vince and Shane on the final nitro but otherwise that was really solid and well done

    ReplyDelete
  99. Are you kidding me? Cena could still pass for 25.

The key is stark contrasts so you can see all the different phases the performer went through. Good examples would be Shawn Michaels, Triple H, and Undertaker

    ReplyDelete
  100. And they could have clips of randy orton being the exact same lame dullard for 13 years too

    ReplyDelete
  101. they had Vince & Gorilla taking over Georgia Championship Wrestling. That's not nothing!

    ReplyDelete
  102. I did it for you, ROCK!July 2, 2015 at 4:48 PM

One of the things that struck me watching all the Rumbles in order last January was how much Cena's visibly grown older in the last 12 years. He still looks maybe 30 now but he looked like he was 18 around 2003.

And it's not just a "Stark Contrast" thing they did with that. It was a progression of the "Spirit of the Company" or at least that's how I interpreted it. Which is fucking awesome that we can have interpretations on this.

But yeah if we're going Stark Contrast, HBK is the winner. Especially if they're all doing his prance spin.

    ReplyDelete

  118. I did it for you, ROCK!July 2, 2015 at 4:59 PM

Punk would have worked too if he wasn't on such bad terms.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Yes he was there. That was an odd inclusion since it lasted like ten minutes

    ReplyDelete
  120. I'm not following...Sting's character was mainly as WCW's savior, whether from the Horsemen, the Dangerous Alliance, or nWo. But that's because NWA/WCW were always historically heel dominated. So the heels would be on top for a long time, then Sting would be the guy to take them down, before he lost to the next heel.

It's not at all how WWF/WWE have done things (save for Triple H in the early aughts), which is to have a conquering hero dominate a rotating crew of bad guys.

Cena is next in a lineup that includes Bruno, Hogan, Austin, and Rock--all conquering heroes.

Sting is next in the Dusty Rhodes lineup--the guy who always fights for what's right, but won't necessarily overcome the odds

    ReplyDelete
  121. Same. I think it's why I enjoy NXT as it's kind of NWAish.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Good to have it confirmed! Doesn't surprise me, I was somewhat a Goldberg mark at that time and even I welcomed Nash's victory.

    ReplyDelete
  123. CHRIS JERICHO. At WW3, do Jericho/Goldberg for the title. During the match, Nash comes down and power bombs the shit out of Jericho. He wins by DQ. Fans would have been red hot to see Goldberg kill Nash after that at Starrcade.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I did it for you, ROCK!July 2, 2015 at 5:19 PM

See I always saw Sting as the main homegrown charismatic, candy colored (at least at first) hero. Somebody that is the standard bearer of the company (which is why he was the savior).

Cena I would describe in the same way. WWF environment (faces tend to win) makes him the long term champion rather than savior.

It's the same type of character in drastically different environments but they both personify the "babyface spirit" of their respective companies and eras.

If your goal is to figure out which 2002-Present WWE talent equals WCW Sting...then yeah Cena works in that he's the only peg that could fit in that whole--except if you want to say Sting and Undertaker are each other's equivalents. Bc other than Sting (which is a bit of a reach), Taker has no equal.

Or maybe Cena is DDP, the consummate every-man babyface...damn you for sucking me down your rabbit hole

I like them too, but I have to go watch their stuff on their own website more often than not because WWE keeps taking down their videos on YouTube for.....reasons.....

  153. I was always a NWA/WCW fan over WWF growing up and thats rare for a kid from Jersey where WWF was king. That video def brought back fond memories fer ser.

  160. This got me in the feels and made me miss Sting (especially Sting), Flair, and Hogan. Even DDP a little bit. Wish we had younger guys today with half as much natural charisma and character.

Surreal seeing Undertaker and Paul Heyman mixed in there. Whoever put this together did a phenomenal job.

  164. Fair point I watched a lot of WCW from '89 to '98, and never saw him win much, so I guess he seemed like a jobber to me, especially because of how strongly he was booked as Taker after that.
