Goldust Questions

1.)  Do you know what the plan was for the Goldust/Brian Pillman feud if Pillman hadn't died?  They did a great face turn with GD with the interviews/etc.  Then after Pillman's death, they didn't seem to know what to do, so they VERY quickly turned GD heel in an unconvincing fashion and with various bad gimmicks attached to him until they were forced to turn him into a comedy character years later (which worked).

2.) Do you think GD could have at least gotten a 1 day reign reign as champion before transitioning it to someone else?  In the 90s he was very popular.

Hey, something new to talk about!

1)  Yeah, the plan was for Marlena to turn on Goldust and go with Pillman on a permanent basis, although past that who knows because Russo.

2)  I dunno, really the IC title was about the top level for the act, and injuries were going to prevent him from doing much anyway.  I don't see why he'd even be in line for a one-day reign with so many other people around.

I've been harping on it a lot, but that Preacher Dustin vs Val Venis feud was so badly planned. The face sleeping with the heels wife causing the heel to have a crying nervous breakdown (instead of a standard cartoon villain tantrum) was just weird and uncomfortable to watch. Russo turned Preacher Dustin face completely by accident it seems. Left Val twisting in the wind too.

Yeah, when the Goldust character returned in that feud, it was weird because the fans cheered for him when he hit Shattered Dreams on Val. Russo's "shades of grey" shit convoluted a lot of angles.

  4. Goldust winning the World Title for dad would have been such an easy story to do right now -- if they had kept the titles split.

Cody winning the US title from Cena for ddad the next time they roll through Texas should be good enough though.

  5. At least stuff was happening.

  6. I'm really curious what the original plan for the Goldust character was. They were on a really wild ride and then had to dramatically scale back due to public pressure.

  7. If there was a time for Goldust to get to main event level, it was 96. But, with Shawn as champ, there was no way anyone else was getting the title, especially not Goldust. By 97 he'd already lost a lot of steam.

Also, not related to the title, but I've been watching 96 wwf lately and holy hell is Goldust boring in the ring.

  8. Goldust was horrible to watch in the ring during his 90s run, really bad.

  9. If anything the aborted angle extended his career. He might have ended up overstaying his welcome past 1999 before coming back in 2002 and revitalizing his career.

  10. It was really weird, in his original WCW run he worked his ass off (which he didn't have to do considering who his dad was) but had a really boring personality. Then he played this really interesting character in WWF but sucked in the ring.

  11. Had he stayed hot through '98 he would have been a good opponent post-Summeslam for Austin than the endless Kane/Taker garbage.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I really marked out for that. I liked how Goldust became a face in that feud. It made him hot, which he hadn't been in a long while.

  13. When my 2 year old draws with her crayons, stuff happens. That doesn't make it good stuff. Although in fairness my 2 year old would book a better show than Russo could.

  14. It just occurred to me that Russo isn't creative, so Marlena and Pillman probably would have done a lot of the stuff Marlena and Val Venis did.

  15. Watching the '98 Attitude Era Raws on the Network, there's a several week period that I had forgotten about where Goldust/Dustin is involved with the main event scene with Austin, Foley, and Vince.

The night after Unforgiven, Goldust is randomly given a title shot against Austin, personally from Vince, pissing Foley off. It ends in a No Contest. The next week, he torches the Goldust gimmick and starts going as Dustin Runnels, which is a promo I remember. But what I forgot about is that he stuck around the top for a few weeks, interrupting a Vince promo, facing Foley, and running in against Foley in a big post-main event brawl.

So, was there actually a plan to take him to the next level at some point? After the aforementioned events, he kind of just fizzles out and starts doing the preacher gimmick.

Loved Pillman's heel work in his last angle.

I'm kind of amazed Goldust wasn't used as a "monster of the month" for 96 HBK. Boy Toy vs Sexual Deviant seems to write itself.

  18. The only exception was the fake preacher stuff. Val Venis was Pillman.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Wow, I don't remember that *at all*.

    ReplyDelete
  20. But in his most recent run he was super good; especially with the smaller subtle stuff

  21. The time to do the one-day-or-one-week title reign with Goldust would have been during the Rhodes Bros. run. I was faintly hoping for that extreme longshot to happen the whole time. Especially considering how awesome his dark body-paint look would have been with the belt.

    ReplyDelete
  22. There was a Michaels/Dust dark match at a PPV wasn't there?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Been said before, but 98 exposed just how thin the roster was at that point. WWF were lucky that Austin was stratospherically hot, because without him I have no idea what they would've done - but it would've been absolutely dreadful.

  24. Goldust was never "very popular" in the 90s. This emailer must be mistaking Rhodes for someone else entirely. He was "interesting" in late 95 and late 97, but never at any other time in the 90s.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yeah the first time Goldust seemed to be drawing pops as a character was in 2002 with Booker T.

  26. The hottest Marlena ever looked was in that hotel room clearly naked under the covers with a complete look of disgust on her face while Pillman laid next to her and smoked his cigar.

    Pillman's XXX-Files were awesome.

  27. Was this the "Crapper 3:16" stuff?

    ReplyDelete
  28. It would have been perfect after shawns playgirl issue came out.gold dust stalking him and whatnot

    ReplyDelete
  29. Rock would have been the guy by late 98 but wwe would have had a bad time until then

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree. He had some really great matches tagging with Cody. But in 96 his matches were boring as can be.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Agreed, I think it was after his appearance on the Stern show, no?

Goldust was not popular. He was ass in the ring and was hardly a credible IC level guy by 99. Even at a time the titles changed a lot, he was never close to a legit world champ. Transitional or otherwise. Let's not confuse his 2013 resurgence and the recent Dusty love for Goldust being anything more than midcard comedy

    ReplyDelete
  33. Dustin could have gotten over in 1999 in WCW if he had work rate and Russo wasn't so "work shoot" nuts.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Goldust was getting heat for coming onto guys but after a while there was only so far they could go with that so they turned him face and he became super boring. They didn't know what to do with him until he teamed with Booker T. I actually liked him more as the Natural Dustin Rhodes in WCW.

I read a Torch interview once with Terri in which she said Marlena and Goldust were going to renew their wedding vows live on Raw, but Pillman was going to interrupt and Marlena would turn on Goldust then. She said she still had the gold wedding dress they had made for the angle hanging in her closet.

  36. Already said this last month but right after Dusty died would have been a great time to start a program where he wins it as a "last hurrah"... assuming no injury.

I also could have seen him feuding with Flair in 1994-95 if Hogan and friends never came in. After the Stud Stable feud featuring Flair's best buddy and "cousin" AA, he could have moved onto a feud with Flair, won the belt, and then rekindle the feud he had with Austin to put him in the main event scene.

    ReplyDelete
  37. No, the Crapper 3:16 segment happened on one of the first Raws of 1998, which is when Goldust was wearing the New Year's Baby outfit.

    ReplyDelete
  38. This is a really good idea. When Funk came into WCW he talked about going after Dustin, since Dusty wasn't around. Transitioning to a Flair/Dustin feud would've seemed like a logical step. Could also have led to Dusty teaming with Dustin against Anderson/Flair.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Agreed. I know the house show I went to in the summer of 96, the main event was Shawn vs Goldust. A brief feud during the fall would've been pretty good. Maybe for the October In Your House.
