htm main event

Hi Scott-any idea why Vince let HTM strong arm him with losing the IC belt at the original Main Event?  I know Honky threated to go to the NWA with the belt but, once he was in arena, couldn't Vince had gone back to the plan of Savage going over either via a "screwjob" or having someone like Andre or Haku convince Honky dropping the belt was best for business or had they already moved on to plan B for WrestleMania and DiBiase just got screwed by Honky?  Doesn't seem like Vince to let someone pull one over on him.  Thanks.

Well I mean ultimately Honky was still drawing at that point, and as Honky has said many times since then, he just wanted to be shown a bit of respect.  I don't think he was seriously threatening to go to Crockett (and he couldn't really do so anyway) but he felt very disrespected by all the plans for Savage and Dibiase while he was basically expected to just drop the title and disappear.  And ultimately when the time came, he did business with the Warrior because it was the right time and place.  I think the whole "holding up the show for money" thing gets very overstated.

  1. It was a different time back then. Guys knew their value and Vince knew they knew. They took their characters seriously because they had to be perceived as someone important when the time comes to move on somewhere else, and they still had some options back then.

  2. It is really hard to believe Vince didn't strong arm HTM.

  7. I got to meet him at a comic con recently. I took my 6 year old son, and since he had seen HTM while watching old WWE with me, HTM was one of the only things that didn't freak him out. He liked Honky. Honky was really cool to talk to and took a few pictures with us. He said one of his favorite matches was a six man cage match when he teamed with the Hart Foundation against Macho and Strike Force in the Boston Garden. He also said winning the IC title was a favorite memory, and he didn't like working with Warrior very much, because of the stiff clotheslines.

  9. I always found it weird. Sexist jokes aside, Ricther got taken to the cleaners, Bret got schooled and Jarrett strong armed the company into his own future unemployment and booking his own promotion. And yet Honky says I ain't jobbing to Macho Man and Vince backs down? As people have said, maybe having Savage win the IC title was a unnecessary end game and Vince realized it. I really thought Beefcake was going to get it until they set up the Ron Bass angle and Warrior won it out of nowhere. Honky was great in that IC role, but I have to wonder why Vince backed down to Honky.

  10. The whole "I'm taking the belt to WCW/NWA" thing is weird to me. It's a prop. Like David Hasselhoff threatening to take KITT to ABC or CBS.

  12. I tend to think the reason Honky got a pass is
    A) he was still making money for them
    B) he was able to explain to Vince why his way would also make them *more* money

He turned out to be right :)

  13. Honky tonk would have gone on to do just fine because Vince loves musical acts, especially ones he created

But htm is short sighted and Vince turned him I to a comedy jobber act until the acts had zero heat left by jan 91 and let him leave

Summer 89 even Mean Gene was quasi shooting on him "we've heard you song once, we've heard you sing twice" etc

  14. Because Vince turned HTM into a heatless joke within a few years and then canned him

  17. I think Scott always respected Honky Tonk. He gave the guy full credit for putting Warrior over like hell (he jobbed in a minute flat), then returning jobs over and over in the subsequent years. And for being a great draw.

  18. That's a fair statement, but HTM still got a high profile job from Hogan. I mean Honky did the jobbing, but still Honky held on until 1990-91. And Honky didn't have much shelf life for a push once the IC thing had run it's course. I'll admit I thought the AWF had something with him teaming with with Angel Baby (Luna Vachaun), but they went no where.

  19. That wcw job hogan got him in 94 just proved to everyone except HTM himself that Vince had turned him into a heatless jobber to the point where even Bischoff told him he was fired as soon as he tried playing the same Putin games again

    ReplyDelete
  20. I doubt HTM was volunteering to return jobs, he was just turned into a jobber and didn't win another match on a ppv or major card again... observer newsletters at the time also talked about HTM again refusing to job at WM5 but changed his mind when the only other option he was given was being fired

    ReplyDelete
  21. Not blame, but when you refuse to drop the title for the biggest tv audience in the history of pro wrestling don't be surprised when the company doesn't continue to look out for your best interest

HTM himself has said he would rather job in the opening of hogans house shows than win on the other tour group... that mindset for 2+ years isn't a good long term career plan

"oh please" - great line guy

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well no wrestler in their right mind would volunteer to lose all the time unless they were doing the Foley/Jericho "Legend Comeback Tour" thing and didn't care anymore. But it's not like he refused all those jobs or quit, like a lot of guys would in that situation. HTM was basically a JTTS nothing in his last years.
