Macho Man and Cocaine

Scott,

Something that has bothered me a little bit recently is the theory that Randy Savage was all coked up during some of his classic promos. I'm not sure if it's more a meme or if people really think Savage was dipping into the nose candy. By all accounts the Macho Man was notoriously thrifty  making it hard for me to believe he would willing pay to support that type of habit. There are stories about how much he loved coffee, in particular I remember Warrior talking about them downing a pot of coffee before a match. Lanny Poffo has also mentioned on several podcasts how thrifty Savage was and that he didn't blow money on drugs and partying. Now I'm not trying to say Savage was a straight edge superstar, but I think it's ridiculous to accuse Macho Man of being wrestling's version of Scarface. I feel Savage was just that intense and talented.

I feel like maybe Warrior was using coffee as a euphamism for "giant bag of blow", because there's been numerous people who have cited Savage's love for cocaine and other drugs, along with everyone else in the 80s.  Plus having your heart explode at a relatively young age like it did doesn't typically happen from coffee alone.  I mean, I love Savage as much as anyone, but I'm not operating under false illusions here.

  1. NOTHING MEANS NOTHING! Off balance, on balance, doesn't matter, HE IS THE CREAM OF THE COKE, NOBODY DOES IT BETTER

  2. Pretty sure he can be intense and talented AND coked-up in those promos.
Especially when you consider that everyone not named Backlund had drug issues in that decade.

  3. "Savage was dipping into the nose candy."
Dont be rude because her current fella has a big schnoz, her name is Stephanie.

  4. This emailer is very hot and bothered about this.

  5. As crazy as Randy Savage seemed to come off I never heard any stories of his partying. Lots of Elizabeth in the closet and he didn't spend his money stories but I don't know too may Randy Savage drugs/drinking stories.

    ReplyDelete
  6. It would explain his paranoia.

Cup of coffee, cup of coffee , indeed.

  8. Totally possible he was doing drugs during that era, but Macho didn't even need coffee to cut those bats hit insane promos. The guy was a genius nutty bar.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Also keep in mind that he may have had a network of enablers that continually gave him the blow so he might not have even needed to pay for it.

    ReplyDelete
  10. holy shit this guy's a virgin

    ReplyDelete
  11. Also, just for arguments sake, it may not have been coke abuse that ultimately did him in. Theoretically speaking, steroids alone can do a number on your heart. Theoretically.

    ReplyDelete
  12. This. Having grown up with a parent who abused coke, I know first hand the bad stuff it does to you.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Could go both ways. On one hand I've not heard a lot of Savage drug stories like I have with Piper, Muraco, Fuji, Adonis, etc. He was genuinely wired so that and some coffee can definitely explain the promos. And the steroids (remember he was obviously juicing hard when he came back in 2000) plus pain killers can cause the heart issues. That said, coke was THE drug for a ton of wrestlers and other athletes and celebs in the 80s. It's amazing how many baseball players, basketball players, hollywood stars, etc. were snorting in the late 70s and into the 80s. Half the Lakers were doing coke when they won their first two titles.

  14. this email is so precious in its naivete

    ReplyDelete
  15. Heaven help the guy who demanded "favors" from Elizabeth in exchange for coke

    ReplyDelete
  16. He would have ground the guy into powder and snorted him.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Macho Man looked so freakzilla in Spider-Man I was surprised he wasn't dead sooner

    ReplyDelete
  18. Coke was also a lot cheaper in the 80s, if I remember my drug history correctly.

And from the people I know that do it and have done it, if you keep below a certain level of consumption it's possible to basically get it for free. Like, you show up at a party, and people are doing it and they offer it to you for free because you're their friend or because it's weird being the only guy who's getting high.

    ReplyDelete
  19. It's ok to still like him even if he did cocaine in the 1980s like literally everyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Roddy Piper on coke = most obnoxious heel who ever lived
Roddy Piper off coke = face who makes bad jokes with Morton Downey Jr.

  21. takes one to know one

    ReplyDelete
  22. If Savage loved coffee so much, that explains why he always had those little creamer packets on his person

    ReplyDelete
  23. Unless you witnessed him doing coke, a whole lot of assuming going on here.

Radio show I listen to in Philly said that when he was a guest on their show back in 2000 or so, he was clearly all coked up, and at one point left to go to the bathroom, took 15 mins, and came back noticeably more hyped up and frantic than when he went in.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh, his stuff with Morton was classic. His stuff with Blubber Lug was classic.

  26. I loved the Bonesaw McGraw name. They should have sold that to Vince. I can picture Luke Harper with it.

I wonder if Ziggler was allowed to do coke if he'd cut a good promo or not.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Ziggler looks like the type that can't handle a joint

    ReplyDelete
  29. No, man. No.

Look, I know not everyone has a whole lot of experience around people on drugs besides weed, but there's a reason Randy loved his sunglasses. Ever see him cut a MACHO MAN promo without them? Those are coke eyes.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Between the two, Savage was bound to die of a heart explosion.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Incidentally, the Ascension do a pretty good Road Warriors impression (assumedly) sober while Animal and Hawk were both coked to the gills during their promos.

    ReplyDelete
  32. well Ascension were stealing lines LOD used in the promos verbatim leading up to their Raw debut

    ReplyDelete
  33. I remember when I was a kid if Macho Man took the sunglasses off during a promo I got VERY scared by his eyes

  34. Anyone remember that one time Cena & Punk tried to do a Mega Powers promo (it was on the Christmas Raw the December before Punk left)?

    Anyway it was squaresville USA

  36. Don't forget about the guy that doesn't do drugs. Just say you don't partake and people will beg you to indulge.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Coke was a lot more expensive back then.

    ReplyDelete
  38. His heart likely exploded from all the damn horse/animal steroids they all were over pumping themselves with in the 80s. Hell, Davey Boy, Warrior, Crush, among so many others dead from that shit.

I don't think so. He was fucking Miss Elizabeth and (allegedly) Steph.

    ...Oh you meant the OC?

  40. A lot of people talk about drug use when they really have no direct experience or knowledge of it. During the eighties, wrestlers were encouraged to adopt over the top, flamboyant personas and a hyped up interview style. Basically, the more over the top, the better. Perhaps cocaine use contributed to the "manic" interview style of some wrestlers, but in most cases, it probably had nothing to do with it. Contrary to popular belief, cocaine doesn't magically transform normal people into ranting maniacs. And there are plenty of wrestlers (for example Ultimate Warrior) who rarely took recreational drugs, yet still carried on like lunatics in their interviews.
I don't know whether Randy Savage was a heavy coke user or not. I mean, it's entirely possible I suppose. There was a lot of cocaine around in the eighties, particularly in the entertainment business, and drug use was very common among wrestlers. But what I'm saying is that the line of reasoning that goes: "oh my god he's talking crazy in his interview he must be on coke", is entirely spurious. You don't need cocaine to rant and wave your arms around a lot, and cocaine doesn't necessarily compel people to rant and wave their arms around a lot.
As for Savage's heart "exploding", heavy coke use can contribute to heart failure, yes. As can numerous other lifestyle choices, such as heavy drinking and / or smoking, abusing steroids, being on the road 300 days a year for more than a decade and getting hit in the head, slammed into the mat and diving off turnbuckles night after night. In other words, a wrestler's lifestyle tends to be uniquely unhealthy and conducive to heart problems and other health issues, with or without the addition of cocaine to the mix.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Maybe he just had to take a huge dump.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Wouldn't surprise me, but he's still my favorite wrestler either way.

    ReplyDelete
  43. "Macho Man must vacate his BOWELS, yeah!"

    ReplyDelete
  44. Too thrifty for blow? OK. Crank then.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Besides the blog, I've never heard anyone say Savage was cokehead. Who has said this?

I am betting on steroids damaging his heart more than anything. The guy was ripped his whole career.

    ReplyDelete
  46. With inflation? I'd have to ask my connects about current prices. But given that several of my immediate family were involved in the selling of Colombian marching powder, I wouldn't imagine it'd be that pricey.

    ReplyDelete
  47. That's a good one.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I don't think the emailer gets that blow isn't quite as expensive as he thinks. Especially for someone with Savages standing.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The whole lockerroom was coked.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yep. The last time my mom relapsed we were out and I told her that her eyes looked like they were about to bust out of her head.

And as been mentioned, coke does a lot to explain his paranoia.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Dude, no one is saying he killed someone. It was the 80's. Fuck, even Nancy reagan was probably doing blow.

    ReplyDelete
  52. This. I could see Dynamite Kid with a few lines out saying "C'mon brother, snort one with me."

    ReplyDelete
  53. It was made ridiculously obvious when he went off then and shrank by like 30 lbs overnight. His second Title run had him look TINY by comparison, and he started wearing the shirt.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I heard savage used to carry a suitcase with coke and a gun.it would also explain his his paranoia

    ReplyDelete
  55. Randy seemed to be a loner and probably didnt want to share.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Big old slim jim dump.

Iirc that's what happened to Chris Farley. He wouldn't buy as many drugs as people thought. He was so popular that people wanted to party with him to say they did.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Actually, cocaine is pretty expensive and it was more expensive back in the eighties than it is now. The average price was about US$100 per gram. The quantity consumed can vary vastly from user to user. An addict can easily get through one gram a day, although some would use much more than that. Assuming a gram a day though that would be US$700 per week, which is a nice chunk of change by anybody's standards. I assume Savage was on good money back in the eighties, but a heavy coke habit would certainly make a dent in his income. All pure speculation of course; as I outlined in a previous post, there's really no evidence to suggest that Savage was a heavy coke user. People are just jumping to conclusion based on hearsay and stereotypes about how they think people on cocaine behave.

    ReplyDelete
  60. No offence mate, but judging by your various comments under this post, you sound like a naïve little dweeb.

    ReplyDelete
  61. There was a lot of coke around in the eighties, yes. But by the same token, it wasn't as if every single human being on the planet was using coke, or even everybody in wrestling, an industry in which drug use has traditionally been rife. It honestly doesn't bother me one way or the other if Savage used coke or not. But the "evidence" people are using to draw their conclusions here (weird eyes, manic promos) is just plain stupid. It's total conjecture.
