You HAVE to make him look like "superman" in order to make him credible for the rematch. The Wyatt's will be fine as will Rollins taking the AA on the table. For the record I want Lesner to win at NOC, and hold the title until Wrestlemania, but this time around Cena has to go 50/50 with him otherwise whats the point of the match? This is why people can't stand Superman but love Spider-Man.

cowardwhotriedtoquit • (X-1) hours ago

OK, but when Superman has been Superman for so long, will the remaining Superman fans (the report says Vince is focused on Cena's current fans, not attracting new ones, shortsighted as that might be) not be upset/disillusioned if he starts showing vulnerability?
--

What they bring up has to be a real concern to WWE I would think. It's hard to wean fans, especially younger ones (the evergreen Cena fans), from what you've taught them for so long. And the portrayal of Cena as a super heroic figure has been constant - he *is* the WWE's Superman.

But WWE also has a problem that both the Superman comics and, say 'The Simpsons' TV series, don't have to deal with.

John Cena is mortal.

Superman will always be as young, or old, as needed to serve the particular story arc. Future reboots will always have kids that think of that variation as 'their Superman' but he will still be recognizably Superman - the same hero their parents and grandparents knew.

Bart and Lisa will remain as stuck-in-time as the producers want, and their voices won't break as seasons pass. Granted, the voice-actors are aging and will eventually retire or die, but the producers aren't racing against some child actors' approaching puberty. At every contract negotiation there was always the possibility of replacing the voices with those of impressionists.

Cena is a mortal Superman. He's been growing-up alongside his first fans, and every year he's becoming 'my first TV hero' to a new host of young children. But, there *will* be a post-Cena WWE and they don't seem to want to contemplate it.

When I refer to his mortality here I'm not meaning his death strictly. I simply mean that he's an actual human being and not a fictional character who can be rebooted (pace Fake-Diesel) indefinitely, i.e. at some point he will no longer be wrestling for WWE - the reason why is unimportant for our purposes.

They, understandably, don't want to prematurely cut the Cena era short... but his overwhelming shadow leaves no green shoots to grow after he leaves. This run is a bucking horse they seem to be afraid to get off of.

So, what can they do?

If Cena leaves as a sole Colossus, bestriding the WWE landscape, then doesn't his exit plunge any succession into doubt?

But, the question remains, even if they wanted to, can they actually walk the fans back from Superman-Cena and simply have them see him as 'first among equals' (although he's still super cool and they should buy his merch!)?

The latter seems smarter, but involves short-term pain and re-conditioning of the audience... and as long as Cena is healthy its not really necessary from a certain view.

Eh, now I'm rambling. Perhaps Ill have more when I get back from doing the crossword at the pub.failSafenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3838126259950293862.post-44507698360100529882014-09-13T15:44:44.060-06:002014-09-13T15:44:44.060-06:00Vince is just copying that montage from Rocky VI w...Vince is just copying that montage from Rocky VI where he defeats Tyson, Mayweather, and Holyfield in one night to prove he can stand up to Mason "The Line" Dixon.Jasonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3838126259950293862.post-87144173104416697662014-09-13T15:31:48.055-06:002014-09-13T15:31:48.055-06:00I hate UVa.
