And the Emmy goes to...

JACK BAUER, MOTHERFUCKER! And then for a double-shot of awesome, 24 wins Best Drama. Sure, Scrubs didn't win Best Comedy, but certainly The Office was deserving enough. Julia-Lous Dreyfuss getting Best Actress was a bit of a head-scratcher (does anyone watch that show?) but I think the rest of the night went well enough. And it ended EARLY. I guess threatening death to Bob Newhart was all they needed.

It's party time in CTU tonight, however!

  1. Well, Dreyfus won simply because she broke the curse and because she was the only actress nominated whose show is currently in production. Of course, after that speech, who is going to vote for her again? But people do watch the show, but it's benefited from great scheduling.

The Office win was awesome for me, though all the shows were deserving in some way (yes, Two and a Half Men, too, simply because it's managed to keep people interested in the traditional sitcom, and it's managed to hold its own without Raymond, and that's an accomplishment worth noting in a day where the best sitcoms are single camera).

I don't watch 24, but I like Sutherland, so I was glad to see him win his award, although Laurie was still robbed completely.

Pretty blah three hours, but the opening video saved it. Seriously.

  2. I was getting a sinking feeling early in the night when fucking Hawkeye won over Gregory Itzin in the Supporting Actor category, but man, did the voting committee redeem themeselves and my faith by FINALLY giving Keifer and 24 their dues and throwing them a couple of Emmys. Hopefully, Jasck will now use the Emmy as a weapon to stab some Chinese guy in the thigh next season.
Kudos to Tony Shaloub for his three-peat, Jeremy friggin Piven, Mariska for winning Lead Actress:Drama, and Andre Baughter for getting recognized for Thief. Can't complain about The Office or Blythe Danner or even Megan Mullally, but Hawkeye and Elaine winning were inexcusable jokes. Speaking of jokes, nice dress, Murphy Brown! UGH!!!!

  3. I'm guessing there was some lame ass television award show earlier tonight...

  4. How does The Daily Show beat The Colbert Report? Seriously it's like a no contest which of the two are better nowadays.

I have no idea who won, but I am glad 24 did.

  6. Congrats to 24. I've never actually watched an episode myself, but everyone I know loves this show. I trust some of their judgements more than others, but unanimous sounds like a good majority to decide whether or not I like something based on the thoughts of others I know.

Who did JLD have to blow to get that Emmy? The academy should be ashamed.

  7. Scott, you're forgetting that President Douchebag didn't win, they gave it to ALAN FUCKING ALDA who hasn't been relevant in how many decades now?

That and Colbert losing were horrible crimes, and proof the Emmy people have their finger anywhere but the pulse of America. (24 kickassery notwithstanding)

  8. Definitely agree with that.

I was glad that the Office got it's due, can't wait for the new season.

  9. I saw a bit of the Red Carpet rundown and they had a trivia question asking how many times Kiefer has been nominated for 24. It's a damn shame that it took 5 years for him, and the show, to be recognized. I still say they should have given it to them in season 3, when Kiefer was all over the map, and NAILING IT, with varied performances throughout the season. I think they were just afraid that he'd finally snap and start killing all of the vote tabulators, including Kareem Abdul Jabar.

The bigger farce, compared to Daily Show beating out Colbert Report, was that Barry f'n Manilow beat out Colbert. One could make the argument that Daily Show is a better all around show than the Report, but I really don't think anyone else in that category outperformed Colbert this year. He's literally a one man show, standing up against Godless killing machines in order to spread truthiness.

The Office was a great win, although I would have been glad to see anyone but 2 and a Half Men win it. Acceptance speech of the night goes to the writer of My Name is Earl for his hilariously embittered non-thanks. And they finally recognize the genius of Jeremy Piven as Ari Gold, one of the best written and best-acted characters on TV today. The half-season ended last night and I'm already jonesing for the back 8 to see what happens with Ari's firing and Vince's new project (not to mention Drama's pilot).

  10. I've only seen one episode of West Wing in my life, that being the live debate episode with Alda and Smits, and I must say that it seemed like Alda gave a pretty convincing and enthralling performance (provided the whole season was as well-acted and engaging). Although a win for Itzin would have also been extremely well-deserved.

Also, I must have missed this part, but on the morning radio show, they mentioned Colbert actually came out and riffed on the fact that he lost to Manilow. I'm hoping to possibly find a highlight reel on youtube of the best moments of the show to catch up on any funny things I missed (I heart Hugh Laurie's presentation was pretty funny also).

  11. Gotta be a bittersweet moment for the Pivster, winning the Emmy and then...

    ***SPOILER***

    ...getting fired by Vinnie Chase.

  12. I dunno. I'm thinking this is Colbert's first shot at being nominated. He'll have plenty of years to win. Plus, John Stewart is still great on a rpetty consistent basis.

It was real cool to see Stewart, Colbert, Carrell all getting nominated tonight. Daily Show Alum at full strength.

  13. I thought the guy who gave the speech from the Office was hilarious.

  14. The lack of House-related love is disturbing.

  15. But the people have spoken! They want 4 more years of Douchebag!

  16. Not me, unfortunately.

  17. I wouldn't vote against Jack Bauer. What are you, nuts?

  18. Meanwhile, rolling along to it's fourth consecutive Emmy, The Amazing Race! Maybe this is why Survivor has decided to go all "Race Warz" on us...

  19. House deserved the Emmy more than Jack Bauer plain and simple. All Kiefer does is overact for 24 episodes and that equates to greatness somehow.

  20. God DAMN i am glad Piven won. Ari Gold has got to be the best character on TV.

My question is, when the hell are they going to air the rest of season 3? They have 8 more episodes filmed, its just a matter of when they are going to air them.

  21. I think they just have three more episodes in Season Three. But what if I were to tell you that I heard they were saving them to piggyback on the Sopranos return this winter. Is that something you might be interested in?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Check that. According to TVnow.com, they *do* have a full back schedule set for the spring of 2007 (why not just call it Season 4 then?)

    ReplyDelete
  23. They have 8 more episodes to run, all of which will be piggy backed with the finale of Sopranos.

Also, I must second that Ari Gold is probably the best character on TV right now.

    1. Ari Gold
    2. Jack Bauer
    3. Gregory House

  24. You're missing my point. Would you seriously vote against Jack Bauer? Do you know what he would do to you? He once lost his keys in the morning, and tortured himself for 4 hours until he gave up the location of the keys.
