Jericho Suspended?

http://www.tmz.com/2012/05/24/chris-jericho-wwe-suspended-desecrating-brazilian-flag/

Sounds like a temporary thing to keep him out of legal trouble for the rest of the tour. However this would be the more appropriate ending to a fairly disastrous run.

Comments

  1. Well, that's one way to get him out for the Fozzy tour.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I don't agree that this last run has been "disastrous". His feuds have been somewhat silly but the matches have been great.

    ReplyDelete
  3.  Exactly. It's not like his feud resulted in him facing Johnny Ace.

He started off awesome, the Punk feud was fine. Their match at WM was great, and to me, the street fight is one of the Top 5 matches of all time. The 4 way match was fine from what I've heard.

    So, go Jericho.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Jericho has been good, the booking of Jericho hasn't been so great tho.

I think people take these things far too seriously. It's just a wrestler trying to get heat. I doubt Jericho gives a shit one way or the other about Brazil. But I guess it's illegal to desecrate a flag there. Hopefully the WWE will cut Jericho some slack. Either way, it will be a good story in the next book.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Woah, did you mean one of the top 5 'street fight' matches, or top 5 wrestling match of all time?

    ReplyDelete
  6. 'Disastrous'? More like disappointing, and that's by the high standard we expect of Jericho, rather than in general WWE terms. Two **** (give-or-take) PPV matches is nothing to be sniffed at, even if the angle itself stuggled.

Re: Brazil. Obviously Jericho had no idea about the illegality of his actions, he was just trying to garner some good old fashioned heel heat, which he certainly achieved.

    ReplyDelete
  7. It's official.  TMZ is the best wrestling news site in 2012.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Fairly disasterous run? He was runner up in the Rumble and every PPV appearance has been in a WWE or World title match.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Agreed, I think that we'll look back on this feud with more fondness than dislike.

I believe that as we forget the details of a feud, matches remain in our memories, and the Punk/Jericho outings have all been solid to good.  Plus the street fight was a fantastic blow-off, with a bunch of fantastically memorable spots and unreal heat.

    ReplyDelete
  10.  Take it far too seriously?  Imagine a foreign heel doing the same to the American flag.  How would Americans react?  Personally I think all flag desecration laws are stupid, both foreign and the one in the United States that was found unconstitutional in the late 80s or early 90s.  it's cloth.  It's your flag, believe in it or not.  Someone rubbing it on their ass or whatever isn't going to bring the downfall of your country.  BUT, and a big BUT, if you wouldn't do it with the flag in your country (Jericho has dual citizenship) then don't do it to someone else's flag.  I call it the HBK rule.

    ReplyDelete
  11. you think they would have learned after the JBL / Nazi salute incident - get a better idea of what you can/can't do to get heat.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Thats actually a neat little way to write him out for the summer if thats still the plan

    ReplyDelete
  13. I agree with TPrincess, this run has been quite bad as a whole. Just because you are in a title match doesnt automatically mean you've been doing a great job. Tensai scored big wins and that has done nothing for him at all. Jericho has been coasting on his name recognition this entire run,

    ReplyDelete
  14. Shawn Michaels did similar stuff during the runup to Montreal, didn't he? Picking his nose with the Canadian flag and dry-humping Quebec's?

    ReplyDelete
  15. The difference being that Shawn Michaels didn't do anything illegal in Canada.

When you go to a foreign country, you agree to abide by that country's laws.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I was at the show and he really got some huge heat, I was even afraid to cheer him, because people got really mad at him. Even though I know he didn't have any bad intentions when he did it, as the veteran that he is, I expected him to be more cautious about this kind of behaviour.
It was really fun having WWE here for the first time ever, I hope this doesn't screw any other chances of them coming here again, especially Jericho.

    ReplyDelete
  17. SMH @ "fairly disastrous run"

    ReplyDelete
  18. heel tryin to get heat and went too far. no bigs.

    ReplyDelete
  19.  And now I've learned something - although it's trying to be put through now, I wasn't aware Canada lacked flag desecration laws.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yeah, she should have left out the "fairly"

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yet another example of Jericho being screwed by WWE politics. When JBL pulled the goose-step out in Germany eight years ago, he not only wasn't suspended, but they went ahead with putting the belt on him for 9 months anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Surely you're not comparing Tensai -- who has only appeared in two main event matches on Raw (and in both cases, to help build a PPV feud he wasn't even involved in) -- to somebody who wrestled in the WWE Championship match at WrestleMania.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Didn't Hulk Hogan wipe the sweat and blood off of his face with the American Flag at the end of WrestleMania 7?

    ReplyDelete
  24. SMH @ "she should have left out the "fairly""

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yeah, of all time. I absolutely loved it. They went full tilt, and it was brutal. I had it at 5 stars before the table jump, and they just kept going, bringing the goods. Tons of reversals, false finishes, no botches and they were just always in go mode.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I don't watch Raw or anything, just read the results. Anyways, when I watched Extreme Rules, and they did the feud recap thing, I thought it was awesome. It just had the misfortune of being lumped together with a lot of crap.

    ReplyDelete
  27. No, but using your logic of him being in the title picture as being successful, the comparison is worthy. The depth is terrible right now that if Jericho wasnt in the title picture, his current run would be the biggest failure of his career.

    ReplyDelete
  28. People blame the booking in regards to Jericho's lackluster run, but I think part of it is that he didn't really bring anything new this time. He was basically the same guy he was when he left last time, which is disappointing because he's one of the more inventive wrestlers in terms of persona.

Also, Jericho might be getting into the territory where no one really wants to boo him anymore (kind of like Flair in his later years). I think his run might have had more impact if he was the face going against a hated heel. So instead of Punk, he should have gone after Daniel Bryan.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Since when is Jericho screwed over by WWE politics? He's done well for himself and seems really happy with his career in general.

Also, I'm pretty sure this suspension is just to appease the Brazilian authorities, or whoever is giving them heat over there.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Also Canadians aren't Brazilians.

Big cultural difference. It'd be like wiping your rump on the Texas state flag times ten.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Christopher HirschMay 25, 2012 at 8:22 AM

It has been pretty underwhelming to me but that is the mark in me because Jericho has been my favorite wrestler for about 14 years now. Jericho himself seems happy with this run and has never really cared about winning, he just wants to put on a good show.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Christopher HirschMay 25, 2012 at 8:23 AM

Bahhahahah, biggest failure of his career? Guess you forget when he first started in the WWF, or his WCW start.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm ok with "underwhelming", especially if the person is a Jericho mark. I like Jericho, he's not in my top 10 but I root for the guy personally and professionally. I thought his run was fine, he and Punk had consecutive ****+ matches, and he gave Punk a great moment at ER (that was just overshadowed by the Cena/Lesnar stuff).

But "disastrous"? Give me a break. I think people made the mistake of getting their hopes WAY up and fantasy booked a feud that was strictly about being "Best in the World" (which Jericho has never been considered and which I think would have sounded weird next to a match built partially on the idea of Rock cementing himself as the "Greatest"). This wasn't Jericho's best work, but it wasn't even close to being his worst (from a storyline aspect). Let's not act like every feud this guy had was as awesome as his second HBK one.

And anyone calling it a disaster (or something to that effect) who endorsed that shitty Rumble idea (him winning without actually doing anything) should be ignored.

    ReplyDelete
  34. What happened to the Vince McMahon that pushed Vader just because he beat up a reporter and went to jail in Kuwait?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Worse than his 2007 return and lukewarm feud with Orton? Or his subsequent feud with JBL? Or his IC title program with Shelton when you could tell Jericho was getting burnt out and didn't care as much? Or the night after winning the Undisputed title up to the HitC with HHH?

I like Chris Jericho, but he hasn't had a good enough career for this run to be considered the biggest failure of his career.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I never said it was the biggest failure in his career. I said if he wasnt in the title picture right now, it would be the biggest failure. This run now has nothing for himself or for business.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The buzz for his return fizzled out within a month. Good point about the Shelton feud though.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Bulls eye. Jericho came back for the purposes of just having fun in front of crowds again, and putting over the next generation (Punk, Sheamus, etc). He did what he was supposed to do. Those bizarre videos he did were meant to get your attention, so that everything he did HAD everyone's attention. And we watched him put over the two current champions. Mission accomplished.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think that the biggest complaint about the jericho comeback is two fold. The cm drunk angle just seemed to sort of the miss the mark, and more importantly his two ppv matches against punk were good but not great. I was hoping for a ****1/2 classic, and they didn't quite deliver. I think scott gave them both around 3 or 3 1/2 stars and most other veteran recappers had it around that. That's certainly not a disaster, good matches but not as great as they were going for. Could be because jericho is a bit over the hill, or maybe they just couldn't click in the ring. Personally I'm still glad he came back and I hope he sticks around for a few more months but i understand why people are dissapointed(match quality). But its still closer to a success then a failure.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Worst_in_the_WorldMay 25, 2012 at 9:22 AM

Definitely agree with those who have been a little underwhelmed with the impact of this current Jericho run, but I don't see where it can be looked at as disastrous. The Mania and Extreme Rules matches were excellent, and the overall feud served it's purpose of helping cement Punk as a big star. It wasn't next level Hart/Austin stuff, but it was a credible veteran coming in and absolutely putting over the rising star. Worked for me.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think the buzz for his 2007 return fizzled out by the end of his first promo. Although to be fair that wasn't the greatest crowd (Anaheim I think).

His pre-Shawn 2007/08 stuff was worse than this run IMO, both from a storyline and ring work perspective.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Saw it happen at an indy show in the la area. I laughed cuz really who gives a shit plus its a wrestling show but a lot of people went ape shit and started throwing stuff. Kind of a crazy scene. (The gimmick was the guy was like an anti war vet or something, and this was around 2004 when people were wrapped up in the red vs blue state gimmick)

    ReplyDelete
  43. I have to be honest, I am enjoying the heat that Jericho is taking for all this. Is this incident blown way out of proportion? Yes. But, there seems to be a smugness to Chris Jericho that gets to me. So, there.

    ReplyDelete
  44. So you're saying that if you took away the successful aspects of Jericho's return, it'd be a huge failure?  That's hardly a fair statement.  The way Jericho is being treated right now is essentially how a heel SHOULD be treated.  He had a great but ultimately unsuccessful showing in the Royal Rumble.  He got eliminated from the Elimination Chamber under controversial means.  And leading up to WrestleMania and Extreme Rules, he almost always got the better of Punk physically.  Yes, he lost the big matches, but the villain is SUPPOSED to lose the big matches.

Since the Triple H era of super bad ass tough heel, it seems like people view main event heels as a failure if they're losing clean to the good guy at their own level or higher.  If I'm not mistaken, the only people Jericho has lost clean to since his return have been the current WWE and World Champions.

A strong, well built heel is appropriate for some cases.  But to say Jericho has been a failure would be like saying Randy Savage was a failure because he always lost to Hogan and Warrior.

    ReplyDelete
  45. work work work work work

Come on... he's touring with Fozzy....

    ReplyDelete
  46. maybe Im in the minority but I would rather have goofy funny Jericho back than crazy super cereal Jericho.

    ReplyDelete
  47.  I suggest you give a quick read of Jericho's 2nd book for an answer to your question.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Honestly that's where my main issue is with this run. I don't think Punk got anything out of the matches with Jericho and the build could have been interesting but they went with the silly drunk angle and it just reeked of desperation from that point on. Punk went over Cena on PPV...twice...Punk didn't need the rub.

I agree with the poster that said he might have been better off as a face and giving a guy that could really use it whether it be Bryan or Ziggler or god forbid Miz or Del Rio. Just one of the gazillion heels that are walking in quicksand would have been better served.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Savage had successful runs against those two. You think Jericho's feud with Punk was successful?

Creative isnt helping him and business is down as a whole but there has been very little buzz for Jericho right now. There is no denying that.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm sure the money that he brought in from being WWE Champion for nine months soothed that wound really well.

    ReplyDelete
  51.  Smugness is not a good quality.

    ReplyDelete
  52. exactly. to me everyone who is really upset over a wrestling heel using a flag to get heat is a moron.

    ReplyDelete
  53. you deserve to be a smug if you are the best in the world at what you do.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yeah man, after I heard this story I went and researched Michaels' history with the Canadian flag. He did some unspeakable things to that thing. You're right, he dry-humped it, picked his nose with it, dropped it on the mat...all types of stuff that a foreign heel would never be able to get away with using the American flag. I mean, there is a standard for this recently with the whole Fit Finlay/Miz "national anthem" fiasco. Vince is very worried about political correctness now with Linda running for senate.

More to the point, this IS a work. I think I would have picked a better way for Jericho to get his time off though. His booking has been pretty bad this run...not horrible but...

    ReplyDelete
  55. That Vince:

    1: Didn't own a publicly traded company.
2: Didn't have a wife active in politics.
3: Didn't do too much with Vader anyway. (And Dr. D would like a word with you...)

    ReplyDelete
  56. "Also, Jericho might be getting into the territory where no one really
wants to boo him anymore (kind of like Flair in his later years)."

totally agree on this. I think this is even a little bit of a problem because you can hardly ever do the "new face against veteran heel in his breakout match" angle anymore because the audience doesn't buy the young babyfaces in that role.

    ReplyDelete
  57. First, am I really the only one who thought his return has been great? Sure I wish he would have WON the Rumble, but the ending sequence with Sheamus is only behind HBK/Taker as the best Rumble ending sequence. His matches with CM Punk at WM and Extreme Rules were both classics, and he's cut some entertaining promos. Are people just dissatisfied with his return because he didn't win the strap?

About the suspension, it just makes me miss the good old days when Shawn humped the Maple Leaf and it got him more heat, not suspended. What about the other countless times when people have broken American Flags, or Russian Flags, or Iranian flags? You can break all those just leave Brazil out of it?

    ReplyDelete
  58.  It is if it's your job to be hated. That's a heels job so if you do have a certain smugness about you, it helps.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Worst_in_the_WorldMay 25, 2012 at 11:06 AM

Sure, Jericho could have been used to put over someone else. But Punk's the champ, and (along with Sheamus) the main guy they're building up as a true main event face. So while Jericho COULD have come in to put over a mid-card heel, to me it made way more sense to pair him off with the main event face. And yeah, I'd disagree that Punk didn't get anything out of it. Punk got to be a part of two great PPV matches, had a credible Mania opponent, defeated a top guy--- I dunno, I bet amongst the everyday Cena-loving, "WWE Universe" fans Punk's more popular now than he was pre-Jericho. Which makes the feud a relative success.

That said, as a huge Jericho-mark I will admit wishing it added up to more than that. I would have loved to see heel Jericho as the focal point of the show. Actually causing chaos, being the heel that the announcers talk about at the top of the show. But he just came back at a time when the top spots were clogged with Cena/Rock/HHH/Taker. And, in what's probably the largest problem that WWE has right now: the only heels that WWE ever makes the focal point are authority figures like Ace, not actual wrestlers. I mean (and sorry for the tangent), why couldn't an actual HEEL WRESTLER, like Jericho or Cody or Del Rio, been in a position to make Show so weak he was crying?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Part of me hates that this is a big deal, but then part of me applauds WWE for seemingly learning this lesson from over the years of stupidity where stuff like this got brushed under the rug, like with Shawn and JBL.

Too bad it had to happen at Jericho's expense though.

    ReplyDelete
  61. If Shultz did what he did in 1997, no way would he get fired.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Breaking another country's law is "much ado about nothing"?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Indulge your fellow Greek, if you will (I'm broke, true to form)

    ReplyDelete
  64. It's pretty obvious he wasn't aware it was against the law, and while that's not an excuse to be used in a court of law, the Internet hypocrisy on this is obvious and silly.

He apologized, he's been suspended, it's over. He didn't mean any harm behind it, and if they're not prosecuting him, who cares?

    ReplyDelete
  65. I love Chris but seriously, it's time to go. There's a whole continent across the pond that's willing to pay to listen to the worst music ever made, it's a match made in heaven for him. Go be a huge rock star in Lilyhammer or some other godforsaken place where they still pay tickets to see shit like Bloodhound Gang.

    ReplyDelete
  66. He got off scot-free for punching a woman. Bout time he pays for his actions in some way.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I didn't love Jericho's return either. Jericho's one of my favorites. I loved the teaser videos, I love the jacket, it was great to have him back...but he just loses. I know he's fine with that, and that was his purpose for coming back...but I'm just a really big fan of the guy and I wish he could've gotten a run that was more about him, even if it was short term. I know he likes to be a heel and going out as the bad guy who puts over the new face is probably fine with him, maybe even what he wants to do, but I'd like to see him finish off as a face. Even if he did what I saw suggested here - an over the top delusional version of Y2J. The serious heel character ran it's course.

    ReplyDelete
  68.  The only way Jericho losing helps the guy going over is if it's a guy who isn't established enough and needs a win over someone with name value, or if the match is so unbelievably good and hard fought that it seems like it was difficult to beat him. But Jericho's Jericho - a guy portrayed as being under the belief he's really good even if nothing he does supports that and he doesn't back it up in the ring. He's won the title a few times, lost it not long after. He can't beat top talent. He's always been portrayed as being on a lesser level that the top guys. I think Shawn Michaels is the only top guy who ever really put him over strong, and even that didn't lead to anything...before he left in 2009 he may have been bigger than Punk (and even then I think they traded wins when they met), but by 2012 Punk was bigger than Jericho. But still, a "best in the world" feud to put Punk over as a big deal would've came off better if they'd done more to portrayed Jericho as possibly being the best in the world - part of his heel character was calling himself the best in the world when he very obviously wasn't, beating Kofi Kingston a few times doesn't change that.

    ReplyDelete
  69.  Uh, except for getting a title shot against Undertaker at Canadian Stampede (and he only got the title shot in the first place as a replacement for Ahmed) Vader was pretty much buried after the Kuwait incident.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Vader getting pushed down the card had way more to do with his weight issues than Kuwait. He was getting multiple segments on Raw building up how much of a badass he was after the Kuwait thing happened.

    ReplyDelete
  71.  His return promo in 2007 wasn't his best, but the week after was worse - with the "Me want title match" stuff. Also, his in ring return wasn't made out to be a big deal - he just showed up in his tights one week and got into a fight with Santino. And the Orton storyline was kind of weak. He's banished from WWE, sits home for over two years, and then decides that he has to come back to accomplish one specific goal in winning the WWE Championship from Randy Orton - three weeks later he loses and that's the end of it.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Not trying to be argumentative, but I really don't care what anyone does to any flag. It's not some sacred cow I have to worship.

Jericho did it to get heat and it ended up working too well. Political correctness dictates he now sit out for a month so it looks like WWE actually cares.

    ReplyDelete

  75. Nah, he should stick around. Still has plenty to give, both in the ring and on the mic.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Punk benefitted from the Jericho feud, because it allowed him to have two genuinely great matches, show the variety in his work (he hadn't had a great match since the Cena feud), and it gave him an opponent willing to put him over clean as a whistle. Who else could have given Punk any more credibility? Cena didn't exactly put him over clean. HHH wasn't going to. Orton was on another brand and working as a straight-up face. There was no one.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I just can't fathom how someone could return with great fanfare, be the runner up to the Royal Rumble (and eliminate the biggest star -- Orton -- competing in it), and only compete in WWE/World title matches on each PPV he's appeared in, and that can be defined as "fairly disastrous."  Are people going to be telling their grandchildren about the legendary Chris Jericho run of 2012?  No, probably not.  But honestly, talk about exaggerating a situation.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Well WWE does constantly tell us that the vets are just better than the current roster.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I feel the same way about Austin Aries.  I just can't cheer him or even enjoy his matches.  Despite his popularity he's got X-Pac heat with me.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Thanks for the idea man, I found it via google

    ReplyDelete
  81. I'm with you on basically every point, but if it's illegal to do that in Brazil and he was in Brazil and being threatened with arrest, then I'd say it's pretty justifiable to put that in a different league.  Not like he knew though.

    ReplyDelete
  82. It's amazing to think how an incident like this would have been handled in the days of kayfabe. No matter what the backlash, a promoter like Bill Watts would have fired Jericho on the spot if he apologized for what he did.

    ReplyDelete
  83. GOOD THING HE WORKS FOR ME.

    ReplyDelete
  84.  ...On Smackdown...

    ReplyDelete
  85. He's actually only got select dates with Fozzy until August, so apparently he won't actually be gone all summer. Last I heard, anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Jericho is one of my all time favorites but seriously, this run just hasn't done it for me. It's "Best in the world at what I do" Jericho in it's Fat Elvis period. The matches have been great but he hasn't had any great character moments, and honestly his character has had nothing to do in this role: all the CM Drunk stuff could have been done by literally anybody, and nothing of Jericho's actual personality ever came into play. The weird intro videos and the stupid troll gimmick were just inconsequential Wrestlecrap. The matches will be the only thing that saves this run, but that shouldn't really surprise anyone considering the principals.

For what it's worth though, flag desecration laws are stupid. And Brazillians are all cockblockers who'll sit practically in your lap to hit on your girlfriend, and then get really pissed if you do the same. Sorry to generalize but it's true.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Punk has had great matches with everyone in the last 12 months. EVERYONE...Cena, Del Rio, Ziggler, Mark Henry, it doesn't matter. That's all him right now...All right everyone save Lord Botchsau...

So Jericho didn't do anything special for him other than have a feud with a crappy storyline.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Cena put him over about as clean as you could. 40 minute match, Punk hit his finisher and got a clean pin. There was some storyline involvement but nothing specifically detrimental to the match.

    ReplyDelete
  89. That cost Vince over a million dollars. In 1984 dollars.

    ReplyDelete
  90. He's like Charlie Chaplin...once he started talking, it was all downhill from there.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Yeah, turns out his isn't a work. He really f'd up here. They had to smuggle his ass out of the country!

    ReplyDelete
  92.  especially consider Stossel was no longer a respected reporter by 97, but rather a right hack douchebag.  What was truly sad was that 20/20, which once was really good journalism with Hugh Downs was now terrible journalism (see Foley's 2nd book for a quick example of 20/20 style journalism in the late 90s), and increasingly gave Stossel the power to push his own stories, which equaled his own agenda.  If the same thing happened in 97 (or now), I would have been sad Schultz didn't hit Stossel even harder.

    ReplyDelete
  93.  awesome reference

    ReplyDelete
  94.  yeah, because she didn't deserve it or anything.

Sorry but just saying "punching a woman" is such a poor description of the entire incident that it's beyond misleading and ventures into "poster trying to be a dick" territory.

    ReplyDelete
  95.  I agree it's a work and personally I could not care less about flag desecration BUT please tell me about all the incidences where wrestlers have desecrated American flags.  I'm all ears.  I can think of one.  Bret hart broke a flag stick across his knee, then choked out The patriot with the flag at IYH:  Ground Zero.  Other than that, I can't think of any examples.  that's my point about the hypocrisy.  Hogan and HBK for example have done countless bad things to foreign flags.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Not doing that at all. I even looked again at the reporting on that incident, and still feel it was excessive force against a woman. The people were in the wrong too, of course.

    ReplyDelete
  97.  I'm not just saying the American Flag. Look what's been done to the Canadian flag. Look at what's been done to any foreign flag that crossed Hogan's path. If I remember correctly, didn't Sgt. Slaughter do some bad stuff to the American Flag leading up to his match with Hogan? I know he choked Hogan with it and got blood on it. That's worse than kicking it.

    ReplyDelete
  98. True, but if it were Triple H i think it would be spoken of a bit differently

    ReplyDelete
  99.  nope.  He did it with the flag of Hulkamania.  Yes, that was a real Hogan flag.  Sarge refused to desecrate the american flag, whether through pride or fear of his life, or a combination of both.  Vince supposedly asked Sarge to burn an American flag and he refused.
