Brock/Votto

Hey Scott,
I've been quietly reading you online for...12 years now, so I thought
I'd drop you a line like I do every couple years or so, and bring up a
couple topics for possible blog discussion.
People may think of Brock Lesnar as being a washed-up ex-star cashing
in on his past success in WWE/UFC, and his original WWE run (2002 to
2004) was a long time ago.  But look at it this way: Brock is
currently two years YOUNGER than Vader was when he broke into WCW in
1992.  And of course he's 100 pounds lighter than Vader, but just as
powerful.  My point is, couldn't Vince and Brock collectively decide
to make Brock THE monster heel in the WWE for the next 3-4 years, and
make a shitload of money?  I guess one or both things might be true:
Brock hasn't shown a willingness to completely dedicate himself to the
business, and/or Vince refuses to believe that Brock will be loyal
after Brock flaked on him 8 years ago.  Who knows.

I think that everyone has already given up on Brock, which is really weird.  It turned into a giant self-fulfilling prophecy, where they thought he'd flake out on them, so they refused to push him over their top guy, and as a result Brock likely doesn't want to commit himself to WWE.  Thing is, he's still young, and if he was healthy then he'd have a lot more financial mobility in UFC than in WWE.  I bet he's doing the job to HHH at Summerslam given how little attention they're paying to their own storyline at this point.

Also, I'm a native and resident of Cincinnati, and I remember you
being at least a mild baseball fan.  How do you feel about the best
baseball player in the world currently being a Canuck, the Reds' own
Joey Votto?  I don't know of another Canadian who could have ever
claimed that title other than (possibly) Larry Walker in 1997.

I actually haven't watched baseball since the double whammy of the Expos moving to Washington and the Blue Jays turning to shit under JP Riccardi.  And then once Carlos Delgado left for wherever he ended up, I had no further interest in following the sport.  The steroid stuff ended up being too much of turnoff for me.  Plus I was a hardcore Jays fan during the Alomar/Carter/Olerud era, and I got my two World Series at that point.  The sport has passed me by.

Comments

  1. Ahem. Aside from that little hamstring issue that's shelved him for the last six weeks, the best player in baseball plays in beautiful Chavez Ravine over here in SoCal.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Re: Brock, I cut Vince a ton of slack when it comes to Brock. If Brock is a "make me the TOP guy and nothing else is acceptable" kinda person who'll flake out cause he had to job to John Cena (get in line), then I wouldn't trust him either. And as for the storyline being pushed to the back burner, do we really want HHH and Paul Heyman cutting promos on each other every week. Brock has a limited deal, they want to save as many for WM season as they can so this is what we get for now. We all knew the deal going in.

Re: Votto. I like Joey Votto but come on, at the start of the season Matt Kemp was the best player in baseball. Then it was Josh Hsmilton. Now it's Votto. Let's let this season play out (ha!) before we start putting that crown on people. I wanna give Albert Pujols the entire year before I write him off. But yeah, Votto's s great story.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I was at that ballpark last year the same night they had that, uh, thing in the parking lot.

That place *almost* makes Oakland look good.

    ReplyDelete
  4. As a Canadian and a huge baseball fan, it seems that Canadians' interest in baseball is directly related to if the Jays are successful. We have a young and exciting team now and TV ratings are actually pretty good (and have been for awhile, much of it due to Jose Bautista's home runs). But the team has struggled lately and so interest has waned. They have to find a way to be consistent.

Watch out for Brett Lawrie when talking about Canadian players. This kid's got star written all over him. When he hits his prime, he could become the best third baseman in the game.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I used to work at the softball park during the summer when I was in high school, where Lawrie's sister was a star (Canada's national team is based out of there). Him and his dad were notorious out there. Brett for being a typical 12 year old little shit that caused trouble, and the Dad for being a huge prick. I cut Brett some slack for being a kid but man, his Dad was one of the most unpleasant people to be around. I found it funny years later when Brett was having issues with the Brewers and he said he "inherited" some personality traits from his dad.

    Go Jays.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Oh, speaking of Larry Walker, my dad actually played high school hockey with both him and Cam Neely, which is why the Bruins were always my backup team behind the Canucks until last year.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I think we're just being too impatient with the Brock storyline. I'm not so much endorsing the "wait and see how it plays out" card that was mocked in regards to Zack Ryder, Tensai, etc.

But you can't compare Brock's situation to them. Compare Brock to either Rock from last year or Taker from any of the last 3 years. Brock has a very limited number of dates. The money on Brock won't be made at a No Way Out cage PPV or at Over the Limit. The money is in Royal Rumble to Wrestlemania of next year.

Sure the Brock as outsider storyline could be better but so could Rock's stuff last year and yet Wrestlemania still did over a million buys and for the most part everyone was satisfied with Rock's run and the match at Wrestlemania.

Come January when Rock is the special mystery entrant in the RR at 29 and tosses out Triple H and Cena back to back and looks to be well on his way to fulfilling his promise to be the next WWE champion and then Brock comes out at 30 and tosses out Rock to eliminate him thus setting up Rock-Brock II at Wrestlemania, 90% of the people who have gave up on Brock will be back to drinking the kool-aid and talking about how genius WWE was for not wasting his dates last summer.

  8.  Hey hey hey no one likes a name dropper.

Just ask my former high school classmate Amare Stoudamire of the New York Knicks!

Can't really blame a Toronto fan for getting burned out when you're locked in that division. Hell, Tampa Bay actually made themselves relevant and their fan base is still practically non existent. I suppose those are two separate issues though. Kind of went off track here, my point is Randy Orton should probably be fired.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Joey Votto is just not the best baseball player in the world. He's top ten, but that's all. And that's not including pitchers.

Why would they make a guy thats contract only has three ppvs in it their top guy? People used to bitch about hogan only doing 8 ppvs a year. Making that part-time a performer your centerpiece is just stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Ryan Gosling was a high school classmate of mine!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Not necessarily. Less is sometimes more. Brock's exclusivity gives his appearances more impact.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Of course it does. But why would I watch or go to the other 95% of the shows that the focus of the promotion isn't going to be at? That's just idiotic.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Well.... Votto IS leading the majors in OPS (by 80 points).  He won the MVP in 2010 (leading the NL in both On-base% and Slugging%) and led the NL in both doubles and on-base% percentage last year, while winning the gold glove.

Who would you say is a better pick?  Hamilton is wildly inconsistent and injury-prone.  Kemp was phenomenal last year, but a huge disappointment two years ago, and has been injured this year.  Braun was only better than Votto last year (out of the last three).  Pujols was as good as Votto in 2010, but has been declining ever since.  Nobody else that I know of can even match the consistency (such as it is) of the players I've already mentioned.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I've never felt so bad for fans/people of a city until last year or so with the Oakland A's.

Then I realized I was a Giants fans, and that sympathy has subsided a little.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ops? That's the most important stat to you? How about that he's 10th in homers and 11th in RBI in just the national league? He's 4th in average in the national league. He has won all of one MVP in his career. I get that you're from Cincinnati, but get serious. If the season ended today, he doesn't win MVP.

    ReplyDelete
  17. "Six weeks" is a long time in a season that's only three months old.  Votto ain't slowing down, so this DL stint has probably cost Kemp the MVP award.

    ReplyDelete
  18. OPS is absolutely a better way to judge ballplayers than RBIs and average, or even homers.  If Votto isn't your NL MVP, who in the world would be?  Kemp's missed half the season, Braun's team stinks (plus, I don't see the writers giving Braun the award again after last year's PED fiasco), McCutchen doesn't have Votto's numbers and I believe a good hitter should always win the MVP over a good pitcher, so that eliminates Cain.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Batting average and RBI are more important than OPS?  What is this, 1930?

Given that the Reds would win the division, Votto absolutely wins the MVP if the season ended today.  And he's 10th in RBI despite two guys with sub-.300 OBPs hitting in front of him and leading the majors in walks.  And being 8th in homers hasn't stopped him from leading the league in slugging% (the record-breaking doubles pace might have something to do with that).

And even if you are obsessed with batting average, look at the 3 guys ahead of him: Melky Cabrera, David Wright, and CARLOS RUIZ.  Who's chances do you like better to maintain their current level of play?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yeah, well, the pavilion area doesn't price out the cholos and McCourt basically slashed all security so something was bound to get out of hand. However, I do hope Stow and his family get as much as possible out of the organization.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I wonder how Toronto will feel when they miss out on the playoffs again even with the extra wild card spot.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I went to the same HS as Mike Williams (Tampa Bay Bucs WR), though not at the same time. I'm quite a bit older.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Joey Votto's Canadian? Didn't know that. He's the only reason that my fantasy team is in 8th place instead of dead last, with Halladay going on the DL and Hamilton not doing shit in about a month. Dropping Mike Trout in favor of more pitching is a decision I'm now regretting.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It's funny you should say that the steroid stuff turned you off. That's exactly what turned me ON to baseball. I think it's made the game much more exciting. What can I say? I like to watch the ball go over the fence...I don't really care what you do to get it there.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Eh, I went to school with Tim Robbins.

    ReplyDelete
  26. That's pretty cool. Shawshank Redemption was a great movie.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Former NHL goalie Mark Fitzpatrick is from my hometown of Kitimat, British Columbia though that's the only connection I share with him.  He did make it to the finals as a backup with Florida in 1996 but he never managed to get a Cup.  I wonder what he does now? (rhetorical--I know that's what WIKI's for.)

    ReplyDelete
  28. I hate the Blue Jays. It's probably a Toronto thing but I've never seen a fan base who's so eager to be arrogant when they have no reason to be. If the Yankees or Red Sox lose, they laugh because "money doesn't win ball games". Then when the Blue Jays finish 4th it's not fair they have to compete with the high payroll teams, even though they say money doesn't mean anything. They completely ignore that 20 years ago when they were enjoying their last taste of relevance it was because they did the exact same thing the Red Sox and Yankees have done - used free agency and trades to pick up high priced established veteran talent. They won two championships with the highest payroll in MLB, but since they don't do it anymore it's not fair now. The Blue Jays got AJ Burnett because they could pay him more than the small market Marlins. That was fine. When the Yankees offered AJ Burnett more than the Blue Jays the Yankees were evil, AJ was a bastard and baseball was unfair. Oh, it's also not fair they have to be in a tough division and feel they should be moved to the central. Yeah, in order to win a World Series you have to be better than a lot of good teams. Life's just not fair sometimes. They finish 4th every year and act like in some way they're still better than everyone else because finishing 4th with a team built "the right way" is more honorable than going to the playoffs with a high payroll. Of course they're owned by Rogers, who could outspend the majority of MLB teams if they chose to, but likely don't because the fan base is fickle and will only show up in great numbers if the team is winning.

As for Brock, it is what it is. Brock finished up with UFC and needed something to do next. Wrestling is something he can do and make a lot of money doing it. It's just a job for him - something he's qualified to do and can make money doing it. For WWE, it's mostly revenge. This guy left "the business" because he didn't respect "the business" so now all the people who didn't get to beat Brock Lesnar will get to beat Brock Lesnar to avenge what he did to "the business". Even if they did want to push Brock for two years and build him into a monster, he doesn't like wrestling enough to want to do it every week. Brock in WWE is Ric Flair in TNA - he'll just show up when he's needed because it's paying his bills,  I doubt he gives a shit about the big picture.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Unless the WWE were willing to use Brock only sparingly for the next 3-4 years, I don't see it happening.

I read Brock's book, and he seems like a very private, somewhat eccentric guy.

He didn't like spending his life on the road, and didn't like the attention he would get at every airport. By the time Brock left he had a private plane flying him to all the shows, and he still couldn't handle the constant traveling.

Brock was never a wrestling fan, and only got into the business to make money. He makes it very clear in his book that his plans were to get in and get out.

Getting a good sum of money to make a couple dozen appearances over a year long period is one thing. But I'd be very surprised if Brock was willing to work even a reduced wrestling schedule at this point in his life.

    ReplyDelete
  30.  Breaker High?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I know I've mentioned this on here before, but since we're on a shameless name-dropping run, I went to the same high school as Edge & Christian and they were shown touring it in the WWE Before They Were Superstars DVD. Kizarny also went to that high school and was part of their clique, but I don't brag about that too much.

    ReplyDelete
  32.  Lawrie seems like a dickhead. If he were American, or a Yankee, he'd be hated, but he's Canadian, on the Canadian team, so I can see why they want to promote him as the Canadian Kid coming home. But he seems like a total douche.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Scott's attitude about baseball pretty much sums Canada's feeling about the sport in general. When the Jays were World Series champions, EVERYONE I knew was into it! No I can't find anyone in the country who gives two shits about the sport and they all think I'm insane for watching it.

But on the other side of the coin, the Toronto Maple Leafs can miss the playoffs for the next century before they ever lose their blindly loyal fanbase...

    ReplyDelete
  34. As a huge Reds fan, I was not expecting to see Joey Votto mentioned on Scott's blog.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I went to the same high school as Jason Biggs. You know, pie-fucker.

    ReplyDelete
  36.  Agreed. It's a job for him. He's qualified to do it and can command a large salary. It's just something he can make a lot of money doing at this stage of his life. I don't think he cares about his wrestling legacy, I doubt he missed it at all. He finished up with UFC, he's not going to the NFL, he's still young...what next? Guess it's a good time to go back to wrestling. I could see him maybe going year to year - if they would offer him the same deal next year and he doesn't have anything else going on, why not? But I seriously doubt he's going to do house shows or weekly television. For Brock I think it's as simple as being told when he has to be somewhere, doing what he's told to do, cashing his check and going home, just like any other job.

    ReplyDelete
  37. "arrogant without a reason" fits a lot of teams in my recollection. Vancouver Canucks fans are notorious for thinking they're "owed" the cup because they lead the league in the regular season but always shit the bed in the playoffs. I'm sure it's common elsewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  38. If I was Brock, I would not show up at Summerslam unless:

    1. Brock gets to beat HHH
    2. Brock does so in ten seconds and then brutalizes HHH and basically have it repeated for at least two-three months that Brock made HHH is bitch and that HHH is inferior to the REAL man. Complete with segments where they show that HHH pissing his pants (literally) whenever someone says Brock's name in his presence.

Because quite frankly, what the fucking point was there for Brock to go back to the WWE if the WWE were going to treat him as badly as they do? Is Brock dead broke and hiding his near poverty level existence (due to his medical bills) and has no choice but to let Vince and HHH carry out their years in the making revenge plots to make Brock look like a chump? Is he that fucking broke that he would go back to that den of vipers and be at their mercy because he has no choice but to go crawling back for their money?

Brock has to be a brainless jock who's got no intelligence to go back to the WWE without getting full creative control over how he's used. He has to know that Vince is chopping at the bit to humiliate him and HHH basically treating him like a loser and inferior to him. I'd suck it up and do a full year's schedule work as a WWE performer even, if it meant that Vince had to do as I say when it came to how I was used if I was Brock.

    ReplyDelete
  39. At which point, if he doesn't give a shit, why the fuck go back? Hell, why not go to TNA, where he at least can be treated with a semblence of respect.

Hell, he could try acting since I'm sure the people making the Marvel movies could find him work.

Doing the WWE with them wanting to punish him, with ZERO failsafe to keep them from destroying his credibility (having HHH constantly mocking him won't do him much favors) is the sort of thing that only makes sense if you think Brock is mentally retarded or was so brutally beaten as a kid, that he has masochistic tendencies and secretly gets off on the humiliation of having himself lose to John Cena and having HHH mock him as a failure who couldn't hack it in the UFC.

    ReplyDelete
  40. If you are going to limit his appearances, he needs to be Alpha Dog. He beats Cena and then cripples him, getting him off TV for 6-8 months. He cripples HHH, leading to Brock and HHH going away and HHH coming back in a wheeljack, severely injured and telling everyone Brock's been fired and then bring back Paul Heyman demanding Brock be reinstated and HHH literally being scared to death of Brock via PTSD and HHH being bullied by the threat of Brock snapping his neck and killing him, into re-instating him in time to do bad things to whoever he fights at Summerslam, so as to slow build Punk beating Brock at WM.

Again, if I was Brock, I'd suck it up and do the full-time schedule no matter how much I fucking hate it, and use that as leverage to get Vince to give me creative control over how I am used and how the company uses me as their centerpiece. Not doing so, means that Brock is either desperate and needs cash bad enough to be the WWE bitch, stupid as fuck in not expecting Vince to fuck him over, or just plain fucked in the head as far as WANTING to be humiliated and beaten by the likes of HHH and Cena, because that gets him hard and horny when he's being emasculated on live TV.....

    ReplyDelete
  41. He's getting a TON of money for very little work. He keeps his name in the spotlight. Personal guess, he's using this time to make some easy money, get fights/air time, show the world he still has his conditioning and strength, and goes back to UFC. At the rate their fighters are going down to injuries, probably wouldn't be that hard to get another good paying contract with Zuffa.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It's always easier for a team to attract fans when you're winning-- especially when you're fan base (which at the time was most of the country) can feel like they're 'sticking it' to America by winning 'their' sport.

No one likes cheering for losers. Except Leafs fans. But they're a special (in more ways than one) fan base. And much like roaches, they're everywhere, and they will NEVER go away.

    ReplyDelete
  43. People shit on Philadelphia fans but we never killed anyone. LA fans treat any championship celebration as an excuse to riot and kill people. Philadelphia is one of the hardest core sports towns in America and when they won their first title in 25 years there were no murders.

    ReplyDelete
  44. If Pat Gillick isn't the best GM of my lifetime he's on the list that includes Bob Watson, Brian Cashman, and John Schuerholz.

    ReplyDelete
  45. "
They completely ignore that 20 years ago when they were enjoying their last taste of relevance it was because they did the exact same thing the Red Sox and Yankees have done"

To be fair, that was a completely different ownership/management group. Consider in 1992-3, the Jays were the highest spenders in the league. In '93, their payroll was $45.7 million to the Yankees $41.3 million. This year, the Jays payroll is $75.5 mil vs Yankees $198 mil. Yeah, sports are tough. Winners win and losers lose. The Yankees spend so much because they can. It's not their fault the system is broken and billions of people around the world drop a lot of cash on Yankee merch. The Jays meanwhile routinely draw less fans than Maple Leafs pre-season games when they share the same dates at the end of their season.

Anyway. My point is, don't hate the Blue Jays because of how previous owners and management ran the team. Anthopoulos is doing the best he can with what he has. The Jays are an unwanted child ever since Ted Rogers died. Rogers (the company) doesn't even want the team, but they keep them because of promises made by the family, and Rogers needs them for content on their channels. And it's a bit of 'we don't want one of our competitors to buy them'. They care even less now that they co-own MLSE, and are trying to boost their presence out West by sponsoring the Canucks arena.

Being a Jays fan is at times like being a wrestling fan. It can feel like you care more about the team than the people running it.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think too many people are assuming that Brock cares how his fake character is portrayed. That's a lot like an actor getting pissy because he gets cast as the villain and gets killed/made to look embarrassing at the end.

I can understand full time wrestlers, or ones that have aspirations to get higher in the card worrying about how they're portrayed and their win/losses, etc. But as others have said, Brock has made it very clear that this is just a payday to him, and if he's not sticking around, who cares? I think he knows that his UFC fans aren't going to tune into WWE, watch him loose, or think its real.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Lol, you're one of those people. I've learned to stop arguing with people that believe that a walk is as good as a hit. Learn that there is more to baseball than math. And stop being a blind homer.

  51. Ugh.  This is why I never comment on Scott's blog.  And even when I only comment on my own email I can't avoid the trolls.  Right, a walk is as good as a hit.  I never said that (and don't believe it), but you're not going to let THAT stop you, are you?  And what the hell do walks have to do with Votto's league-leading slugging%?  (You DO know that homeruns are the foundation of slugging%, right?)  And way to tell us who your pick would be for NL MVP (since it's obviously not Votto).

Why don't YOU learn something about the game before you get nasty with people you've never met on a blog?  Sheesh.

  53. baseball needed steroids.

i havent watched a full season since the indians choked in 99.

    ReplyDelete
  54. McCutcheon is far more responsible for the pirates success than Votto is for the reds. He would win.

    ReplyDelete
  55.  Did you go to school in Cornwall, ON? Or had he moved to Orlando by then? It's weird because I never really paid any attention to who Ryan Gosling was for years and come to find out I never lived less than half an hour from him most of my life til he moved to Hollywood.

    ReplyDelete
  56.  I'm also distantly related to Sarah Gilbert of Roseanne fame, and of course her sister Melissa Gilbert from Little House on the Prarie. And my mom's first cousin is chief designer of Loot Drop games along with John Romero, of Doom & Quake fame. Thought I'd throw those in there too.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I went to school in Burlington, ON. He was at my school I think for half a year before Breaker High (although I don't remember him at all) but his family was still here for a few years. My sister bumped into him once here when Young Hercules was done.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Well, I got nothing bad to say about McCutchen.  Both are absolutely carrying their teams.  But the Reds are in 1st (by one game as of today), and that tends to settle a tight MVP race.  And going beyond this year, McCutchen has only been a very good, not spectacular, player until this year, whereas Votto has been top-tier since 2010.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Now you're just being silly. The pirates have no offense without him. And without Votto, reds still have plenty. And we were talking best in the majors, then MVP this year, now you want to change to the last three years. Make up your mind. Robinson Cano is clearly the best player in baseball right now anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm no "sabre geek" but if there's one "new" stat that a lot of traditional fans (like myself) have embraced it's OPS. It gives you a great idea of who the truly elite run producers (and power hitters) are in the game. I don't know about ESPN, but here on TSN.ca it's one of the stats they give you with each players (along with AB, H, RBI, etc).

And getting back to your earlier point about Votto, who exactly do you think is the best player in the game if Joey Votto is "top ten at best". I know you picked McCutcheon for MVP, but you can't call him the best player in the game based on less than a half season of work.

    ReplyDelete
  61. can I ask him how it feels to be a shell of his former self?

    ReplyDelete
  62. Canadian Justin Morneau was AL MVP in 2006. In fact, Canadians were MVPs in three of the four major sports that year, with Steve Nash in the NBA, and some Canadian in the NHL. There was even a mock campaign in Canada to get Jon Ryan, punter for the Green Bay Packers that year, to win the NFL MVP award. Canadians also still ruled wrestling at that point.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Have you watched many Reds games??  Their offense is smoke and mirrors without Votto.  There's Bruce and Phillips, who are occasionally great but incredibly streaky, and a bunch of crap.  Other than the ballparks, there's really not much difference between the two teams.  Both have deep pitching and are basically carried on offense by one superstar.

And my original point was that Votto is the best player today.  Usually a player's past accomplishments are given some weight along with his his current performance.  If Votto won the MVP in 2010, was a top 10 player last year, and is outhitting everyone this year, then I think that's a pretty convincing argument in his favor.

    ReplyDelete
  64.  I doubt TNA was offering him $5 million.

Going back to WWE makes sense when you think of it as a job. It's something he's qualified to do, has the time to do it, and should do while he's still physically able to do it. Brock's been in the real world, he's succeeded in the real world, I don't think he cares if he can't beat Triple H in the WWE Universe.

    ReplyDelete
  65.  That's true, I'm Canadian so I get a lot of my sports coverage and fan reaction from a Canadian side of things, and most teams fans come off as arrogant to some degree. It's probably the same with most fan bases. I'm a Red Sox fan so I'm used to assuming the worst and not believing they're going to win until it actually happens. And I haven't had a team I like in hockey win since 1999, unless I count Chicago in 2010 because they were my first favorite team as a kid and I still have a soft spot for them.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I guess I don't get the big deal about steroids. Have at it, I say.

  67.  Bob Watson isnt even in the top 100. Gillick and Schuerholz definitely are at the top, Cashman not so much. I am a Yanks fan so there is no anti bias at all. I think the Rays dude Friedman does a hell of a job with the payroll he has to work with.

  68.  What does winning an mvp two years ago mean in 2012? Id argue Carlos Gonzalez and Ryan Braun are better players and there are few others I would take over Votto.

  69. And is his character being portrayed THAT badly? It's not like he's getting treated like JR crossed with the spirit squad. He took John Cena to the limit (then Cena only won by fluke) when it was clear Brock was better, he broke HHH's arm, and now he'll wrestle him at Summerslam. I get that he hasn't been on much but there's a lot of money to comfort him.

  70. Didn't Watson build the foundation of the Yankees dynasty that went from '96-'00?

I also hate the argument that money disqualifies you from being a good GM. The Yankees and Red Sox spend a LOT of money (full disclosure: I grew up a Red Sox/Phillies fan bc my parents got married in Boston and my older brother was born in Phila. Long story short, it was in '07 when I was more upset that the Phillies lost than happy the Sox won that I became a bigger Phillies fan) but you can't just put an all-star team together and call it a day. It gets obscured because from '01-the present the Yankees have outspent everyone but that '90's team wasn't built around buying a title. The Red Sox team that won in '04 was built around role players, a great pitching staff/bullpen/closer, and two big boppers.

Look at the Mets, they've proven you can't buy a championship ring unless Doc Gooden needs some coke.

  71. Steve nash should prosecuted for grand theft larency. He stole the mvp in 2005 and 2006. Highway fucking robbery especially in 2006. Fuck steve nash

  72. Hes getting paid 5 million dollars. So far he's worked two raws and a ppv. He's pissing in the wwes face and they don't even realize it. They fucked up their own story over some petty bs and brock is laughing all the way to the bank.

  73.  Watson didnt build crap and pretty much left because he had little power(see Steinbrenner's Strawberry signing). Gene Michael was the guy that helped overhaul that farm and kept big Stein from dealing away prospects like he did in the past. Guys like Jeter, Williams, Rivera, Pettitte were all developed and prospered under his watch.

Watson was pretty much in the right place at the right time after Steinbrenner cleaned house after the disappointment of the 95 ALDS loss to the M's.

  75. Steroids or not no one can tell me mr. Barry bonds is not the greatest player of all time. If they stiff him on the first ballot I'm canceling my padres season tickets and will never watch or follow baseball ever again

  80. Ur adorable dougie. Every single gm in baseball and the great bill james disagrees with you. The run batted in is an especially worthless stat. I get it, the new information is confusing to you and different from what you grew up with. However sabermetrics are not going anywhere. Mathematics make the world go round bud

  81. Five. Million. Dollars.

Also, you keep going on and about his "credibility" but that's a ridiculous premis in a fake sport.

He's a real fighter. Losing in a fake fight does not damage his credibility at all. Everyone over the age of seven *KNOWS* that Brock could beat the living shit out of *ANYONE* on that roster.

  82.  D'antoni didn't help matters, certainly, but those knees had a limited lifespan- there's a reason the team couldn't insure his contract.
