Whatever happened to that Cena guy anyway?
(it feels much, much longer than 10 years at this point)

---------------------------------

The crazy thing is that he's been on top of the promotion most of the time, too.

  1. And he's been a face for how long now?

  2. Even Hogan, who seemed to be on top for an eternity, was only about 6-8 years.

  3. That promo he gave on Monday feel into the "I'm embarrassed to be a wrestling fan" category.

  4. I remember when the Undertaker wore his "Decade of Destruction" shirt in 2000 and I was like, Man I am so sick of that guy. But he eventually turned it around, ya know, 6 years later.

I feel the same way about Cena. I dont even know if I like or dislike Cena anymore, Im just so fucking tired of him every week. Especially considering the "smart" fans turned on him SIX YEARS AGO and he's still doing the exact same thing.

    Over 8 years.

  6. I missed most of Cena's run (having returned to wrestling just under a year ago after ten or so years) and even I'm tired of him...

  7.  I still haven't watched it. That bad huh?

  8. Most of his "comedic" promos do that for me.

  9. 84- around 92ish. yeah seems about right.

  10. "half decade of half ass"

  11.  The Yoda part was alright. The rest, though...

  12. I remember seeing Cena wrestle a dark match against Shelton Benjamin at the infamous Oakland RAW in June 2002. It was the RAW where Austin walked out of the company and Rock made a surprise return to end the show.

Cena wrestled as Prototype and as a heel. The crowd chanted 'boring' cause they wanted to see actual WWE stars. I had heard about Cena from his OVW days and he seemed like a good worker, but I never would have imagined he'd become the star/pop culture mainstay that he is today.

  13. It's funny, I remember Cena's Raw debut, and thinking he was such a lame candy ass. I couldn't understand why anyone would find this fool appealing. Then the crowd turned on him in favor of Jericho at Summerslam 2005 and I felt vindicated. Like, I'm not the only person who thinks he's lame. Then I started waiting for it. Any day now they'll realize half the crowd hates him and change things up....I'm not sure when I gave up, probably when he beat HBK at WM. Now I don't care enough to get frustrated by it anymore. He killed wrestling for me, I've accepted it.

  14.  To be fair, Cena wasn't REALLY on top the whole 10 years.

2005-present so he's currently sitting on 7 years as the top guy.

He'll match Hogan in another year, and I'm sure he'll get there, but it's not quite there yet.

  15. I loved his initial heel run as hip hop guy. I thought it was a perfect upper - mid card gimmick. Since then he has been turned into Hulk Hogan, and sadly they refuse to turn him into Hollywood Hogan.

  16. Right now I understand why they won't turn Cena (MERCHANDISE), but in 2006 what stopped them? WM22 the fans were all but begging for a double turn. Yeah kids were still cheering him, but the hate was there and it was loud. At any other point in time someone in Cena's position would have been turned; why was Vince so hellbent on keeping Cena a face?

  17.  That's what I never understood, especially from a company that claims that the fans choose the direction they go in. I've never seen a top face get such a mixed, sometimes negative reaction as consistently or for as long as Cena has. Instead of going with the flow they just tried to manipulate things, almost pleading with the fans to like him...the odd thing is that if it's kids that love him, that's easy to fix. Kids will cheer who you tell them to cheer. If they turned Cena heel and told the kids to cheer Angle or HHH they would've done it.

  18. Hey! They forget that 9 years ago, Cena cut a promo about it being his 1 year anniversary in the E which led to the debut of Orlando Jordan!

  19. Maybe Cena's the embodiment of what Vince himself always wanted to look like/be like. That'd be the most rational explanation.

  20. A lot of people were calling Cena the future and THE guy even back then. They compared him to Sting.

  21. Awesome! Something to look forward to! 8 P

  22.  He has that effect on people

  23. The numbers really are staggering when it comes to Cena. He's been a face (and essentially the same kind of face) for 8 and a half years now! I remember when HHH turned face in 06, people were saying how it had been so long since he'd been one, and it was time for a change. His time between turns was less than 4 years. Cena has doubled it!!!

I used to think the heel turn would come at some point, even if it took 10 years or more. But now I worry that they'll stick it out with this character until Cena hits that sweet spot in his career when all the fans (older and newer) just respect him too much to boo him. Basically like HHH (who seemed to hit it after about 10 years in the company) or HBK.

  24. Hell, I like the John Cena from that debut video more than I like the John Cena from the past 7 years. And when I say I like that John Cena, what I mean is I like Kurt Angle.

  25. I remember back in 2001 in his "In My Yard" VHS Taker said he would retire soon. HA! He would go on to produce the best work of his career in the ensuing decade. I always liked that decade of destruction slogan. However, Two Decades of Destruction just doesn't have the same ring does it?
