Punk at Wrestlemania

Scott,
This is an obvious topic, but I'm interested in you and the blog's opinion, especially after the recent direction of his character-who do you think Punk will/should face at Wrestlemania?  They have hinted at a Punk/Rock match for the title, but I just don't see them letting Punk be in the main event of a show that can have Rock, Lesnar, Taker, HHH, and Cena at the top.  Since they're clearly pushing him to be the top heel, do you see him facing one of those guys(and probably laying down), or do you see him dropping the title before then and facing somebody like Sheamus or Daniel Bryan to push them further up the card?  I'm sure most fans would like to see him face the Rock because we'd be guaranteed a good match and probably a better story leading up to it than Punk/Jericho and Rock/Cena from last year, but the fact that they don't trust Punk to main event B shows makes that seem pretty unlikely(although still more likely than an Austin return as some have suggested).  Just wondering what you think.

I think with Rock-Cena 2 and Brock-Undertaker (or maybe Brock-HHH 2 and Undertaker against let's say Orton) already on top of Wrestlemania, it'll be pretty crowded up there as it is.  Punk can always jump to Smackdown and be top heel there against Sheamus, because god knows he'll probably still have that fucking belt by Wrestlemania while Dave says "Ziggler is going to win it any week now" on the radio show every day.  Plus I think that Punk-Sheamus would have a good dynamic, even if Sheamus's HHH-like booking is getting really irritating and we all know how the match would end anyway.

Comments

  1. Agreed on Punk/Austin, assuming Austin is healthy and rehabbed from his surgery.  I thought it was cool that Punk mentioned Austin during the opening promo last week...hopefully that's something they can build around and use in video packages, etc. to build toward the match, assuming it happens.

  2. I don't think there's any appetite from the fans to have a third Wrestlemania in a row headlined by a Rock v Cena storyline. Nor do I think HHH v Brock or Undertaker v Orton would appeal to many. Rock v Punk, Brock v Undertaker and perhaps Cena v Bryan would seem fresher and a more interesting route to go down.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Maybe I'm being really naive, but if it were Punk-Sheamus I think Punk goes over. He's booked at a level below Rock, Cena, Taker, and HHH, but above everyone else. Maybe I'll be proven wrong. It'd be really fucked up if he had to lay down for Sheamus.

And if they go with Brock-HHH II instead of Brock-Taker, what about Punk-Taker? I think Punk gets that spot over Orton at this point. I think that's how it'll shake out. Either Rock-Cena II, Brock-Taker, and Punk-Sheamus, or Rock-Cena II, Brock-HHH II, and Punk-Taker.

If you're Punk, what are you rooting for? Going over Sheamus for the WHC, or jobbing to Taker?

    ReplyDelete
  4. I'm starting to wonder if they go with Rock/Cena/Punk in a triple threat.

    ReplyDelete
  5.  Now when I think about it, I do agree that they should go a different route other than Rock vs. Cena, HHH vs. Brock, and Taker vs. Orton. Been there, done that, time to do something new and different.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I'm not really interested in that, because I'm not sure the match would be good and Rock/Punk holds a lot more appeal to me from both an in-ring and a mic work perspective.

My ideal scenario: Punk/Rock, Cena/Taker, Brock/Orton, Bryan/Ziggler, Sheamus/Jericho as the top Mania matches.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I may be in the minority, but I don't want to see Austin (and HBK for that matter) wrestler another match. I know Austin is my #2 favorite wrestler of all time, but after Mania XIX, that was it right there.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Not a Sheamus fan in the slightest but I don't really get the complaints about how he is booked. For years people have complained that nobody gets over because of 50/50 booking and how nobody gets long title reigns. Yet now someone is made to look dominant over the space of 18 months with plenty of clean wins and people call it Triple H booking. Even if you don't like the guy it is good to see someone (Cena, Orton aside) potrayed as a superstar.

    ReplyDelete
  9. They're really pumping up Punk's longevity as a champ, so I could see him holding the belt into Mania, at which point he should face the Rock. Of course, they may cap that arc at the Rumble.

They've taken Bryan in an interesting direction, and he's managed to stay mad over. Hard to tell where he and Kane will be come March, but it's not unrealistic to imagine him in the main event picture too.

Sheamus/Orton seems likely, especially if Ziggler wins the belt only to drop it to Orton around the Rumble. Maybe a triple threat there. Brock/Taker. Really not sure what direction Cena's going in. Logic says a Rock rematch, but they're booking Punk so strongly right now.

    ReplyDelete
  10. We want new stars! Just not that one!

Like Sheamus as an in ring competitor and how physical his matches are. Can't stand his character, but he's over with their target audience.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I would actually like this. If they do Cena/Rock II, to me it is obvious that Cena goes over and that will take away from the match.

    ReplyDelete
  12. This is pretty much how I feel. I don't mind them booking someone dominant, but Sheamus? No.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yes to the matches you proposed.  That would be an incredible card.

    ReplyDelete
  14. What about CM Punk losing the Title to the Rock and some YES NO man winning the Royal Rumble leads us to:

    WWE Title
The Rock (c) vs Daniel Bryan
John Cena vs CM Punk or
Brock Lesnar vs CM Punk and John Cena vs Undertaker...

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think Punk using a Rock Bottom twice in the last month is a clear indicator that he's going to face Rock on PPV at some point. The playing up of the longevity makes me think it will be at RR where Rock will take the belt. That then sets up Rock/Cena II at WM for the title. Only hangup is I'm not sure they're willing to put Punk over Cena at HitC.

    ReplyDelete
  16. That'll be saved for WM30 in Cowboys Stadium.

    ReplyDelete
  17. No joke... I think jobbing to Taker at WM is probably considered ELITE status at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think it's pretty set in stone that Punk does the J.O.B. to Rock at the Rumble wherein Rock jobs the title back to Cena.  In fact, I bet they turn Rock heel before Mania to give a "different dynamic" for the 3rd WM storyline between those two.

As for Punk, Austin would be ideal, but I think he'll probably be relegated to jobbing to some other face like Sheamus as others have suggested.  Let's face it: once he loses that title he's gonna get BURIED.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yea, I think any of the guys would leap at a chance to wrestle Taker at WM. Seems like unless you are in the WWE title match, it's about as big as it gets. Especially since he can't have very many Manias left in him.

    ReplyDelete
  20.  Really?  Based on what I've seen on this board and elsewhere, Punk/Austin has been penciled in to headline the last 10 Wrestlemanias in a row.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I have no proof of what I said, but I've never believed the match was going to happen... ever.  If it does happen, Austin is not playing second or possibly third fiddle to anyone else.  It's going to be the main event... and once Vince and Jerry Jones finally see eye to eye (read: OH MY GOD THE MONEY!!!)... Austin's return will happen in front of 100,000 people in his home state where he's damn near a hero.

If it doesn't happen like that... it won't happen.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Is Rock/Cena II REALLY fucking set in stone or is Scott bullshitting us everytime he brings it up in terms of him pushing his own speculation as fact?

That said; the simplest fucking thing would be to just fucking do Cena/Punk at WM and have Punk beat Cena and pass the torch to Punk. Anything less would be a fucking waste of time for both men and let's face it, the WWE has to shit or get off the pot with Punk. If they won't put him over as the top guy, cut him loose and omit the "no-compete" clause so he can go someplace where they won't repeatedly undercut him because the status quo doesn't like Punk is preferred by fans over their "anointed one".

And Punk Vs Sheamus would be a trainwreck of epic proportions and be worse than Sheamus vs Del Rio in terms of Punk being buried and made to chase Sheamus around while Sheamus mugs for the camera and does everything short of stabbing Punk Bruiser Brody-style to mess with Punk.

    ReplyDelete
  23. They killed any hope of doing that match-up when they decided to have Bret Hart blowjob Cena. They should have had Bret side with Punk (and Punk dumping Heyman in favor of Hart as his manager) and just let the two have a run going rough shot over everyone in the WWE and build up Vince being so desperate that he has to call Stone Cold out of retirement to stop Punk and Hart.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yeah, I tend to agree. Punk was on the verge of becoming one of their established top guys and they refused to fully get behind him. He wasn't the main event as champion, he wasn't the focus of the show, and his big Wrestlemania angle was against a part time guy they view in a similar light. And now, after he was quickly becoming the most popular guy in the company, they not only turn him heel but are desperately trying to kill any popularity he has - he's probably going to become the next Jericho where he's always on the show and always doing something but never really a top guy.

If they didn't want to have him over-take Cena as the top guy, that's fine. But they're giving Sheamus this massive push to make him into a main event face, when that should have gone to Punk.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I agree. Sheamus is irritating as all hell. He's not bad in the ring, but this goofy, smiley persona of his is awful.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Sheamus is great in the ring. Love his matches.

God all mighty, though, the character they have him playing is as bad as Cena's. Maybe worse.

    ReplyDelete
  27.  Someone really got you riled up, pissed in your cheerios, and rolled you over the wrong side of the bed while you were sleeping this morning.

    ReplyDelete
  28. They could have had something REALLY special with Punk if they had decided to keep pushing him closer and closer to being the top face. Either Punk/Rock or Punk/Brock, with either being for the title, would have been phenomenal in terms of pushing Punk over the top.

But, nope, can't let anybody get more cheers than Cena. Let's take the closest thing we have to a hot new act and turn him into another whiny chickenshit heel.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Bret Hart can barely speak, and I doubt he wants to be on the road on a weekly basis.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I like Sheamus. I'm just tired of watching him beating Del Rio. Del Rio busted his ass last night, and had a helluva match. I just didn't care because it was the 437th time they've wrestled in the last few months.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Exactly.

Sheamus is great in the ring, but he's the same grinning, pandering, unfunny-joking character that Cena is. Why can't he be like Trips or Taker, just a no-nonsense ass-kicker? It's what got him over in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  32.  "pushing his own speculation as fact?"

Pot calls kettle black, film at 11.

    ReplyDelete
  33.  Yeah, I wasn't picking on you specifically.  It just seems like in general there's been a Austin vs. Punk at Wrestlemania wet dream on the Internet for a while now, despite any lack of concrete evidence that was ever actually being considered.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I've been saying that for a year now. I mean, not saying that it WILL happen, just saying that I HOPE it will.

WM29 is already stacked with Rock and Brock there, along with Taker's defense of his nice round 20-0 record. Plus, it's in NY/NJ, a huge market. Austin doesn't need to be there to boost ratings, and, quite frankly, deserves better than sharing top billing.

WM30 really deserves something huge, and I can't think of much bigger than Austin returning in Cowboys Stadium. Think about it: Austin's first match in over ten years, in his home state, in an environment that could easily recapture the world's record for largest indoor attendance (currently held by a 2010 NBA game in the same arena - 108,713)? Loudest ovation in history.

    ReplyDelete
  35.  I think a better way to go is to turn Austin heel. They can play up how he beat up Debra, walked out on the company, is a raging violent drunk, supports cancer, gives money to terrorist groups, wasn't really born in Texas and is ashamed he's believed to be a Texan....then have him face Cena. Cena can wear a cowboy hat and come to the ring on a horse with the Dallas Cowboys in his corner.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't get the classification as Punk as a "chickenshit heel." Because he's demanding respect? Considering how his dominant championship run led to him playing second fiddle to Cena and part-timers, I'd say the progression of his character has made perfect sense. Yeah, he's complained some. Heels complain about things and air grievances. That's what they do. That doesn't make him a chicken shit.

Unless I missed something about Punk being turned against his will, I have to think he'd RATHER be a heel. He always has, hasn't he?

    ReplyDelete
  37. How is the push Sheamus is getting "massive" compared to Punk? He's defending the title in the midcard just like Punk was- way lower on the card, actually- whereas Punk has received a massive push in the last few weeks and finally ended a PPV standing triumphantly.

I really don't get how some of you are seeing Sheamus being pushed way more than Punk. Not at all.

    ReplyDelete
  38. He needs to be Bradshaw circa APA; not a pale-skinned Cena.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm not the least bit sure of that. He's either been WWE champion, the total focus of Raw, or both for the last 15 months. When the "Summer of Punk" storyline ended, he transitioned into another storyline with HHH that had him in two more PPV main events before he won the title back (yes, the storyline was a trainwreck, but the point is it wasn't trying to bury Punk, it didn't bury Punk, it kept him in the main event and propelled him back to the WWE Title). It would've been really easy for him to be buried after Summerslam LAST year, and they didn't.

I just don't see a heel turn and the eventual dropping of a title he'll have held for 14 months by the time he drops it to Rock at the Rumble as a sign of a burial. Even if it is, he'll have had a run of two years by that point the likes of which no one else has had besides Cena or HHH have had in the last 10 years. This is all hypothetical assuming they go through with Punk/Rock, of course, but think about the length of his title reign, the feud with Cena that's seen him consistently come out on top....I feel as if some of you have been waiting for the other shoe to drop with Punk since last June, and just keep pushing back when you think it's gonna happen.

My prediction? After whatever he does at Wrestlemania, he takes some time off and comes back fresh, and strong, with a complete re-invention by next summer. The dude's perma-over and a merchandise machine as a face or heel and the WWE knows it. They've done stuff with him they haven't done with anyone else in a long time. They bent over backwards to keep him when he was ready to bounce. Cena's a huge proponent of him, so is HBK. I just don't see this burial forthcoming.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh, I have no doubt that Punk himself prefers to be a heel, but it's still stupid of Vince to turn him from a business perspective.

And I guess "chickenshit" is overstating it a bit, though his refusal last night to not ask to have the match continued seems like the first sign of accepting things the easy way. I didn't beat Cena last night, he tied him, with the belt simply defaulting to him. He didn't prove that he was better than Cena, simply his equal. Plus, he's been bullying Lawler for weeks, both verbally and physically; what does beating-up a 62-year old announcer prove? Lawler's hardly the highest caliber competition.

    ReplyDelete
  41.  The problem is that Punk should not be the heel in this whole thing. He went from exciting and innovative to boring and whiny. Thus becoming the "chicken shit heel". He's demanding the respect he rightfully deserves as World Champion, and Cena plays the goofy asshole who won't give it to him. Cena should be and is the heel in this storyline even if the WWE won't admit it. Cena comes off as some washed up jock who refuses to admit his time at the top is over, while Punk is just trying to get respect.

Honestly this whole thing is similar to Bret/Shawn back in 97. Bret is the champion who gets no respect and stuck in the midcard (feuding with Patriot and Vader), while Shawn steals the main event spot with Undertaker. Bret=Punk and Shawn=Cena. The difference is Shawn was willing to be the heel in this whole thing while Cena refuses to even try.

The whole shirt thing last night just stank of desperation by the WWE to have people cheer Cena. I understand the whole breast cancer stuff but then they should have everyone wearing armbands or whatever. Or at least the mega faces like Orton, Mysterio, Sheamus, etc. Instead it's just Cena, and this feels like another ploy to try and get the fans on to Cena's side, which didn't work last night.

Personally I think Punk is in the right in this whole scenario, a champion should always be in the main event and the focus of the company. That's why their the champion. This is one of the many things TNA is doing right, making the world title mean everything, something WWE used to do. Can you imagine if they pulled this back in the days of Stone Cold as champion. Have Austin in the mid card while Owen Hart and Ken Shamrock or Rock versus HHH headlined the shows? Would never happen, but now they've rendered the titles so meaningless the only thing that matters is who's facing Cena at the PPV.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It took me a bit to realize you were being sarcastic. Bravo.

    ReplyDelete
  43. It is mainly a "wet dream" at this point, but it's not like Punk and Austin themselves haven't made a few references to it. Maybe just for fun, but it's there.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Does anybody else see the similarities between him and Randy Savage? Who becam midcard Macho King after his heel turn against Hogan.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I wouldn't quite say "chickeshit heel" yet.  But he was definitely emasculated to some degree in this current Cena feud.  That being said, I think they booked last night's match very well.

    ReplyDelete
  46. It sounds like we agree (to some extent) on the booking to come but just how it will be portrayed and what is to come thereafter.  To be clear: I don't think Punk was "buried" throughout most of this run since the Summer of last year.  But I think it's obvious that second fiddle is his ceiling in this company, and he's going to go down a few notches from even that spot in the near future.

    ReplyDelete
  47.  You forgot the part where they'd announce that Austin was really a life-long vegan and preferred French wine over beer, while Cena has a Texas steak and Lonestar beer every night for dinner.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I hope I'm wrong but to those defending the Punk heel turn and believing he will remain a main eventer (as if he has been in any match without Cena anyway), I say "fool me one, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me."  WWE has a track record that says you are faling for it again.  I see Cena beating Punk at HITC, then Punk getting a weasily tainted victory over a majorly injured Cena, Edge style, before Rumble so that Punk can job the belt to Rock and set up Cena going over for the belt at WM against The Rock.  The analogies with Macho King and Jericho are dead on.  Punk will be  'darn good hand" guy who has credibility but like Jericho post Unified title and HHH loss, he will barely sniff the belt as Vince moves on to Sheamus and others as his favorites, augmented of course by Cena and Orton, who never go away completely from the main even scene (Orton is on the fringe right now but still treated better than anyone not named Cena or Sheamus)

    ReplyDelete
  49.  I guess Undertaker was getting buried during his 1997 run when Austin-Hart Foundation was dominating the shows.

Hasn't Cena had 2 Wrestlemania championship matches not go on last?

I love Punk, but I think some wouldnt be happy unless he got the same Superman push that they are bashing Cena getting.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I bet the current Alpha storyline in Spider-Man is getting him all upset because it kinda sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I think Punk should have a match against Daniel Bryan at Mania. I don't know if it's for a title or whatever, but I just want to see Daniel Bryan win gold at the biggest PPV of the year, strap it around his waist and then lead a stadium full of fans into a "Yes!" chant.

    Is that so wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  52. It wouldn't suck so bad if Alpha didn't look like a 90s character reject.

    ReplyDelete
  53.  I don't need him to win every match, or be in every segment, or jammed down my throat the way others have. But Punk is a guy I like, a character that I found interesting. He's the guy I want to see as the hero of the show. Punk might be the champion, but being the champion is only getting him the focus of the show now that Cena is challenging, and just by being the guy they want to be the villain you know he's not coming out on top in the end.

    ReplyDelete
  54.  If the Rock puts over Daniel Bryan (will never happen) I will officially forgive this company and watch WWE again, talk about making a top star

    ReplyDelete
  55.  Probably how they are used on tv, Punk is not the focus of raw but smack down feels like the "Sheamus and some jobbers show"

    ReplyDelete
  56.  It might be splitting hairs, but there seems to be a different in how they're pushed. Punk is a guy who organically became hugely popular and if they'd wanted it to happen, they could have made him either the number one guy, or at least a very close second. But they wouldn't let Punk really be *the* guy, he had to play second fiddle to Cena the entire time, regardless of how popular he was.

Sheamus is a guy who they decided they wanted to be a star, so they pushed and pushed and pushed until it happened. If it's really actually happened. Smackdown is about him. He's dominant. He rarely loses, even if it's just a quick pinfall loss in a tag team match or some other meaningless loss. They're making an effort to turn Sheamus into a top face, they're trying really, really hard to make him massively popular...where as they're trying really, really hard to stop people from liking Punk.

    ReplyDelete
  57.  Job to Taker, no question

    ReplyDelete
  58. It would never EVER happen, but if Daniel Bryan shocked the world and won the tittle from Rock at Wrestle Mania followed by Rock shaking Daniel's hand and Bryan Yessing (who are now not split between him and rock since Rock has given him the endorsement) along with the crowd cementing him as the babyface of the future...I'd probably be moved to tears

    ReplyDelete
  59. And now that Lawler's alright I fully expect Punk to come out to Lawler's music to open the show.

    ReplyDelete
  60. As World Heavyweight Champion, Sheamus has typically appeared within the first three matches of any given PPV.  How exactly is he getting some Superman push that Punk wasn't getting?  Until his heel turn, Punk was winning every one of his matches decisively and cleanly, just as Sheamus is.

Punk and Sheamus have two very different body types and styles....it wouldn't make sense to push Punk as this guy who is physically dominating all of his opponents.  He has, however, outwrestled all of them.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Honestly, since I'm most likely going to this Wrestlemania, I want to see Rock/Punk live. I really have no desire to see Rock/Cena again.

Did the voting for Superstar of the Year 2011 and "Who do you want to see face Rock?" really cause them to panic that much that Cena is no longer viewed as the top guy?

    ReplyDelete
  62. ...and the crowd would STILL be 60-40 in Austin's favour

    ReplyDelete
  63. WM30 can't be in Cowboys Stadium due to a scheduling conflict with the NCAA basketball tournament.  I think WM31 was the first possible open date for a Dallas Wrestlemania.

I really think WM30 is going to end up being in Madison Square Garden after all.  WWE can forego some of the ticket sales for tradition's sake, and given that prices will be expensive as hell in the smaller venue, they'll probably actually not lose all that much in ticket revenue.

    ReplyDelete
  64. "What do you think of WM30 not taking place at Cowboys Stadium, Daniel?"

    "NO! NO! NO!"

    ReplyDelete
  65. Bryan's burgeoning popularity is an interesting wild card in this whole situation.  He seems to be on an 'Eddie Guerrero in summer 2003' level of really connecting with the audience and getting into the main event by sheer dint of overness.  Once the angle with Kane runs its course and they have their inevitable match, Bryan should be a freshly-minted main event-level babyface.  Or, possibly, they drag the Team Friendship story out for several months and have the breakup occur in February, leading to Bryan going over Kane at Wrestlemania.

So going into WM, we have these 'main event level' talents who need big matches....

    * Cena
    * Rock
    * Undertaker
    * Lesnar
    * HHH (probably)
    * Punk
    * Sheamus
    * Bryan (probably)
    * Orton (though he's hardly been a featured performer in any of the last three Manias)
    * Ziggler (though it's 50-50 at best if WWE will really pull the trigger on him)

I'd propose this set of matches for Wrestlemania....

    * Cena/Rock II.  Seems inevitable.

    * Sheamus/Lesnar.  Everyone knows Brock is leaving in April so there's no drama to him going after the Streak.  However, a physical-as-hell brawl with Sheamus would be a great way to re-establish Sheamus' character as serious and a truly tough guy.  Since Sheamus is HHH's buddy, they could create this feud as an offshoot of the Lesnar/HHH wars.

    * Punk/HHH or Punk/Undertaker.  If Punk ends up allied with Lesnar via Heyman, that would be a good way to shift the Brock/HHH feud over to HHH/Punk with their final blowoff happening at Mania with Punk (hope to god) going over.  Or, Punk takes his shot at the Streak.  At 20-0, there should be some natural drama about Undertaker finally losing on a 'round number' and Punk is one of the few guys who could be seen as a candidate to do it, or could make us believe he'd do it in weeks of promos.

    * Bryan/Ziggler or Bryan/Orton for the World Title.  After a Lesnar beatdown of Sheamus, Ziggler cashes in and wins the belt.  He then defends against new uber-face Bryan and the two have a show-stealing 20-minute match and Bryan wins.  Or, Ziggler cashes in and wins the title only to drop it to Orton at No Way Out, since WWE sucks like that.  Then it's Orton/Bryan and hopefully the right man goes over.

    ReplyDelete
  66. On a side note, but for other stadium nerds out there, does anybody else feel like Cowboy Stadium is one of the least good looking big stadiums in terms of showing off the crowd?

I don't like all of the small raised tiers of seating and the sectioning that breaks up the place visually.  It makes the crowd itself seem less impressive, as it doesn't have that overwhelming 'sea of humanity' feeling when you look at it.

    ReplyDelete
  67. They're doing Punk/Rock at the Rumble.

    ReplyDelete
  68. No idea if it's true but Ive heard that the WWE is still thinking about doing WM 30 at MSG. I assume that it's just Vince marking out for the building but that would be interesting.

As noted below, Cowyboys Stadium is out for WM 30. So it's possible.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Exactly. Cena and Sheamus are the top dogs Vince wants to run with, audience be damned.

    ReplyDelete
  70.  Considering that Bryan is one if not THE most over guy they have today... and they just HAVE to bring new guys in the Wrestlemania Main event.

    ReplyDelete
  71. This will probably never happen since it involves 1) Cena NOT wrestling at WrestleMania, and 2) Rock needing to stick around for a while after WrestleMania, but I honestly feel it's the natural progression for the storyline.

Punk makes it to Rock at the Royal Rumble, and to the shock of everyone, cheats to win and retains the belt. The Royal Rumble itself is irrelevant to the storyline other than to say that Cena does NOT win it, it goes to whoever the challenger for the WHC will be. Next night on RAW, Rock kicks things off with one of his angry coked-up promos demanding Punk give Rock a rematch... but instead of Punk coming out, Rock gets Cena in response. Cena gives Rock the bad news that there won't be any rematch unless Rock earns it, and challenges the Rock to rediscover the drive he had to fight week in and out for what he wanted when he was a regular performer, calling back to one of the key points Cena made in the feud with Rock last year. Rock gets the message, eventually leading to Rock winning a #1 Contender's Elimination Chamber match at the February PPV to earn his WM title shot, beating out Cena in the process. With Cena shut out of the title matches, and with two of his greatest rivals banging heads, who better than Cena to be the special guest referee and keep the peace?

Barring that (and running with the obvious scenario of Cena/Rock II), I'm getting the feeling they might be leaning towards putting Punk and Lesnar together for WM with Heyman stuck in the middle. Only problem that creates, though, is who you feed to Undertaker in that scenario... probably Bryan to the IWC's distaste.

  73. Would a card headlined by Cena-Rock and Undertaker-Lesnar qualify as the Most Predictable Wrestlemania Ever?  We know Lesnar is leaving (unless they sign a new deal between now and then) and he is NEVER going to be the guy they have end the Streak.  Rock going over two years in a row would make no sense.  Wow, they really need to shake this up and, thankfully, there is time to do so.

  74. Rock vs. Cena and HHH vs. Lesnar would both be rematches of recent main events, so perhaps Undertaker vs. Punk would be a welcomed fresh matchup?  With Punk as the heel calling himself the "Greatest", it would not be any kind of stretch to see him challenge The Streak.
