CM Savage

Hey Scott,

Love your work, yadda yadda.  I was just thinking that since WWE is going all out with Punk as the new top heel, why not borrow an angle that's passes the Seven Year Rule three times over?  Punk is a huge Randy Savage fan, and with him using the elbow in tribute, why not have him crush some babyfaces throat and you can do the whole WM 3 build-up.  There could be loads of dramatic irony in it too, before the throat crushing, have the face cut promos about Punk betraying everything he talked about in the initial Pipe Bomb promo and then Punk can literally silence his opposition.  Completing Punk's full metamorphosis from rebel underdog face to dominant tyrant heel.  A reverse hero's journey if you will.

I've been saying forever that someone should have done the throat-crushing storyline with the Rock, since that's what his whole gig is based on.  And having Punk take away his voice, leading up to Rock finally cutting a promo on Punk after he wins the title at Rumble, would be perfect, wouldn't it?  It would make sense for Punk to silence people who he feels are disrespecting him, especially someone like Rock who NEVER shows respect to people.

  1. That's amazing. License to print money.

  2. Just realized Hell in a Cell isn't til next week. I am disappoint.

  3. I would absolutely buy that.

But I do see how there could be resistance to that internally. Paying big bucks to bring in the best talker in history, only to have him not talk, seems counterintuitive.

  4. For one specific arc, though? That's a good shot. The pop for Rock's first "... FINALLY" in that scenario would be insane.

  5. I agree! But I see the other side, is all.

  6. I think Foley said something about babyfaces don't necessarily have to do everything they promise, as long as they try. So have Rock come out, and try to cut a promo even with his fucked up throat would be an actual pathos-grabbing moment, giving the Rock some actual sympathy heat.

  7. And best of all, Punk could do it by using his regular ol' elbowdrop

    (Sorry, but it's ugly, yo)

  8. Plus, Rock's body language and facial expressions speak more effectively than most of WWE does on the mic.

    ReplyDelete
  9. At least the Rock's scenes would be better acted than the Steamboat at the doctor segments. Poor Ricky--he was doing the best he could.

  10. I'd pay to see Rock actually use sign language.

  11. You'd have to expose the business more than Triple H did with his "broken arm" to make it happen. There's no way The Rock is going to stop all of his promotional tours and interviews and what not to sell a throat injury for months on end, so the issue would only exist as a WWE storyline, while being no-sold in the real world. And fans would shit all over that.

  12. Gives you time to watch Ziggler/Ryback on WWE Main Event. I'd say there's a good chance that ends up being even better than Punk/Ryback at HitC.

  13. the cool thing about this idea: at this point Rock is at least a good enough actor to even make "promos" work without talking one word. prime example would be the usual "shine it up, turn that b**** sideways and stick it up your candy a**" routine which I could easily imagine without Rock actually talking.

  14. Chris Jericho can give him some pointers.

In high school I had the lead in "Little Shop of Horrors" My character gets eaten by a plant. The next day I showed up at school and was fine. Everyone accused me of "exposing the musical."

  16. Related question: who did Rock actually respect? Austin, Foley....someone help me out with a third person.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hulk Hogan. The Rock believed in him.

  18. Cute. But wrestling is different, and you know it.

  19. I think we explored this before on the blog... having him write down things and other superstars say them would be very entertaining.

    Yes...yes he did.

    A show is a show.

  22. Well, it's not 1987 and I don't think it would be a big deal if Rock talked elsewhere. At this point, I don't think they're so worried about exposing the business when people openly talk about how it's fake on their dvd's and whatnot.

  23. Picturing Rock walking out with the lite brite jacket has me laughing to myself.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Or how about Steamboat going to a school for deaf children since he could relate to their plight.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I like that; that way, Rock can give promos by motioning and head-bobbing just like the Story Mode in "No Mercy"!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Except when the show tries to portray itself as reality. WWE wrestlers maintain a sense of kayfabe in interviews even today.

    ReplyDelete
  27. True, how many times did the Rock guaran-damn-tee that he would win the title and fail?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Rock respected lots of people after the match. Just not for the build.

    ReplyDelete
  29. You disrespected the business brother.

  30. I think they need to do the throat-crushing storyline with Sheamus - to shut him up. Give him a mouth piece and let him destroy guys again. It should also be like D-Lo's chest protector and last for a few years.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yep, this has needed recycling for years. Back in 2000, I thought they could have had Benoit or Angle do it to Rock in order to silence him.

    ReplyDelete
  32. "It's gold, Jerry! Gold!" Despite the usual confederacy of dunces absurd level of overpraise & delusion that this equals CASH MONEY and better ratings then the Superbowl or something, the idea sounds entertaining & one that guys like Punk/Rock could take the ball and run with. Reality dictates that the real money is in Rock questioning CM Punk being Straight Edge. Not because Rocky believes that Punk is on drugs, but more so to imply that Punk is one of them homosexuals and can't possibly be "Straight" Edge. Enter the new "CM Punk is a gay homo" t-shirt and back up the Brinks trucks.

  33. I saw Punk vs. Ryback tonight at a house show and it was much better than you'd expect. HIAC could be good. Punk didn't play chickenshit heel at all and took it to Ryback. He even picked him up and marched around with him. It was a DQ finish with Heyman interference and Ryback looked like he almost hurt himself trying to pick up Paul- failed once and struggled on the second attempt.
I yelled to Punk "Where are our ice cream bars?" and he looked at me and said, "They're in the back". The crowd was really into both guys.

  34. Hogan had a match with A Rock. He musta been the right gay guy.

    ReplyDelete
  35. If you actually think...if you actually think that Hogan was just the right gay at the wrong time...

Hold on, let me say this one more time so that we're perfectly clear. If you actually think...

  36. This is an awesome angle on paper, though there are two flaws. Firstly, as someone else mentioned, it's too hard to keep this angle kayfabe given the Rock's real-life media engagements and public persona. You can't really sell the idea of Rock having his throat crushed for weeks when you see him chatting away on Entertainment Tonight. Even if you could talk Rock into cancelling media appearances for a month for the sake of a very old-school storyline, there's another problem --- WWE has been pushing Twitter down our throats for the last three years, so it's not like Rock couldn't just communicate with everyone that way.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Or do the opposite: Cena goes fucking evil, crushes Punk's throat so he can't talk, leading up to him beating Cena once and for all and do as you suggested.

Cena's already acting like a villain, fucking complete it by having him make Punk a temporary mute when Punk finally has enough and fucking tells Cena to stop spewing lies about Punk and the last year of his career.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Plus...you get a guy over just for being in the same segment as the Rock.

Plus you can get comedy out of ...let's say Yoshi Tatsu offering to help the Rock.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Cena playing the heel?
    Who else but Quagmire???
