Question for the blog

Hi Scott long time reader yada yada usual crap....I have a question about Vicki Guerrero that you might have answered before
1) I know or like to think Vince only kept her on payroll as a way to help her out but at what point was it decided to make her an on screen person and why?
2) what was the purpose of her scoring the pin in her line wrestlemania match?
3) at what point did she truly get "over and hated" and everyone was like we got something good here?

1.  Yeah, for a while she was only on the payroll as a favor to Eddie, and they basically decided to try her out as an on-screen persona in order to justify the money.

2.  So you would boo her and as a reward for years for faithful service, I'd imagine.

3.  The Edge storyline is when she went from annoying to actually having a new term coined for her crowd reactions:  Nuclear heat.  But the thing is, she has no ego about her place in the sport and she's happy to have the character get her comeuppance all the time, so they can leave her on TV for months at a time without burning it out.

Comments

  1. 3. she knows the business is a work, and vince loves to humiliate people on tv. if you put up with that you are golden for years.

  2. I found it odd how when Kevin Kelly was on the PTB podcast he really laid into her as being a "bad person" Something about her leeching Eddie's money or something during their original breakup.

  3. Only in wrestling would they even attempt to make the fans boo a dead stars wife.

  4. I may be in the minority, but I really like Vicki Guerrero. She reminds me of the old days of managers and I wish they used her a bit more for her wrestlers. She and Edge were a fun pair and she gave Dolph some heat (although it's time for him to break away). She could help the next group of young wrestlers instead of being shunted in as a GM or authority figure when they have an opening. Plus, she has a nice rack and I appreciate that.

Even if you don't like Vicki, you have to admit that how she went from a wood-like, groan-worthy prop on TV to a confident persona with crazy amounts of heat is nothing less than remarkable.

  5. I agree with you. She's an awesomely fun manager. And in this modern day of smarkdom the awesomeness of the heat she gets can't be overstated.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Seems like I am the only person who truly cannot stand Vicki. She is the definition of X-Pac heat to me. Hell, they should rename it Vicki Heat because at least you could get good matches out of Waltman.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I was about to come and post that someone on the blog erroneously atrributed X-Pac heat to her. Sorry bud, but you couldn't be farther from the truth. Just b/c you don't like to hate her doesn't mean it's X-Pac heat. That simply means you don't like to hate her.
X-Pac heat is when people are saying Boo-urns, not b/c they like to hate him, but b/c they're sick of having to deal with him. The boos that Vickie gets are legit, with people loving to hate her.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Didn't she try to leave to spend more time with family, and Vince went ballistic?

    ReplyDelete
  9. I just can't deal with the screaming during matches. She's like the female Bill Alfonso (though not nearly as bad), good as far as drawing heat and promos and what not, but once the actual match starts they both just give me a headache.

  10. There are times where I honestly forget that she's Eddie Guerrero's widow, even though they constantly refer to her by the first and last name.

    ReplyDelete
  11. exactly, she is completely autonomous to eddie. and damn near in the wwe longer than him.

    ReplyDelete
  12. What a dumb thing to say.

First of all, how many other entertainment avenues is it even an option? What other forms of entertainment actively try to get half of their performers booed by a live crowd?

Second, she clearly enjoys her role.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Her heat really peaked during the Eddie feud, it was crazy how much people hated them together, arguably the high point of Edge's career too, as his feuds with Batista and the Undertaker, the latter of which got him the main event at mania, occurred at this time

    ReplyDelete
  14. I find it hard to dislike Vickie, she's so good at what she does. The crowds just go nuts for hating her and she knows exactly how to time it so as to piss them off more with each "Excuse me!" She was one where I thought I hated her until I realized she was just being an effective heel and making me hate for the right reasons, which is the mark of a truly great heel.

  15. 100% agreed. She's a terrific heat-magnet manager who knows how to get under the skin so much, that when she finally gets her comeuppance, it feels so satisfying. And she has improved so much, it's hard to remember when she would botch the mic to levels of Adamle. Amazing how she can out-heat just about everyone on the roster with two little words (at ear-splitting volume).

  16. I'm not bashing the performance, just the idea. It's not easy to explain to a non-fan that a company would take a single mom and widow and make her into a villain. I give praise to the performance for her making it work but in the mud fight pig joke days it was a bit hard for me to get on board considering the real hardships she was going through.

  17. I love Vicki as a manager, but they need to stop putting her in Kayfabe charge of shows. The more segments she takes up, the less effective she is. I don't understand making her the "managing supervisor" of Raw, and then doing all of this AJ-Cena shit. It would be better to leave her as a manager and have it lead to the Cena-Ziggler match.

Also, I wouldn't mind her having more of a stable. Bring back Swagger!

  18. Thread-Bomb:
So, why did Tony Atlas put her into the "Ho-Bag"? Besides that he is batshit crazy and thought Kelly Kelly was a virgin....

  19. CM Punk doesn’t fit the archetypal definition of a handsome guy. He’s a little too rough around the edges, a little too unwashed. But he doesn’t fit the archetypal definition of a WWE Champion either — and that’s exactly his appeal.

Perhaps the most counterculture Superstar WWE has ever promoted, Punk looks like the toughest guy at a Rancid concert and that punk rock aesthetic has made The Straight Edge Savior the alternative answer to clean-cut Superstars like John Cena. With his torso covered in tattoos and a take no prisoners attitude, Punk probably isn’t the type of guy you’d want your sister dating. But that isn’t going to stop him from doing it. — RYAN MURPHY

  20. Not me, although a Rancid reference in an article would confuse just about anyone (one of my all time favorite bands, and one I used to gush over a lot back in my teenage 411 days.)

    ReplyDelete
  21. I disagree. I think a lot of her heat is because it is a live crowd and they are stuck with her and can't change the channel.

IMO X-Pac heat is a negative reaction to a performer because they suck, not because the crowd want to see them get theirs. Vince McMahon, Ted Dibiase, Macho Man, and Bobby Heenan were all heels with huge heat, but also extremely entertaining. Vicki is none of those. Nobody is searching Youtube for old Vicki segments.

    ReplyDelete
  22. She is pointless as a manager because of the no male on female violence. Managers have to bump eventually.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm not gonna lie: when she did her mini-Eddie tribute during the six-person match at WM 27, wearing Latino Heat-esque gear to boot, it was hard not to feel happy for her.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The problem with Vickie is that she never really gets her comeuppance. Guys like Bobby Heenan and JJ Dillon would get their asses kicked all the time. Even Sherri would get atomic dropped by Hulk Hogan. The most that ever happens to Vickie is she gets a pie thrown in her face or something.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Sherri also took big bumps off the apron.

    ReplyDelete
  26. He must've gotten rejected.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I've heard some rumors about her. I don't think she is well liked by the Guerreros.

    ReplyDelete
  28. By the way, gotta love how WWE feels the need to explain to their audience how somebody like CM Punk could be considered good looking. I mean, how could anybody POSSIBLY think that? I mean, he's not super clean cut with a massively muscular body! That's what every girl wants, and every guy wants to be, right?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think Chavo is the only Guerrero she still communicates with.

    ReplyDelete
  30. There are ways around that, though, they just have to commit to it. As it stands right now, with the AJ feud, she can most certainly bump for the former GMAJ. Hell, any of the other DIvas could do it. You don't need Cena giving her an Attitude Adjustment, just because Sherri would take the bumps.

    ReplyDelete
  31. "x-pac heat" is a myth. how should we know the exact reason why people are booing someone? the only "bad heat" would be no heat.

    ReplyDelete
  32. She's a natural heel, and it didn't seem to hurt her feelings, so not entirely sure why it hurts yours.

A certain amount of sensitivity in the aftermath of a death is obviously warranted, but there is no reason to treat a single mom and widow with kid gloves forever. When she's ready to move on, let her move on.

I remember people up in arms when she was in on screen relationships well after Eddie had died too, saying it was disrespectful to him, and to her by "making" her do that, and I never understood it. Like, there's every possibility that she's moved on in her real personal life too. Most young widows don't spend the rest of their days in long black veils mourning, you know? If you care for them, you hope that they DON'T. When she's ready to move on, let her move on.

I know a little bit about this. My Mother was a single Mom and widow at 37. She wore a long black veil for a little while (figuratively) and then she moved on. And it was good.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Punk is not a tough looking guy at all.

Not that looking tough = being tough, lots of times it doesn't. But Punk doesn't look tough.

    ReplyDelete
  34. But she gets embarrassed all the time. She's not a dude, so if a wrestler beats her up, it makes the face look even worse. The divas tend to get in a shot or two.

Different expectations for female non-wrestlers vs former male/female wrestlers.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The funny thing is Punk gets more hot tail than just about anyone in that locker room. The dude has major game, so his "looks" surely aren't hampering him.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Punk looks tough enough and is so great in the ring that the perception that he can dismantle you is there and that's all you need in wrestling.

Also see, Ric Flair, Bob Backlund, Shawn Michaels, etc, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  37. All 3 of those guys are great, but Michaels and Flair couldn't dismantle their way out of a wet paper bag. They were cool because they were COOL, not because anyone ever thought they were tough guys.

As is always the case, I just have to agree to disagree about Punk.

Totally true that perception is everything in wrestling though.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Maybe Shawn not so much, but Flair, whenever he went into his figure 4 spot, he would spend time dismantling his opponents leg and would then work the ropes to apply extra pressure until the inevitable reversal spot. I've seen enough old school Flair matches to know this to be a case before his matches became over formulaic.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I that case, I kind of hope it's the guy who created Glee.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Given how low the standards have fallen, there is a legitimate chance that Vickie Guerrero herself will one day be inducted in the WWE Hall of Fame.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Is it your belief that a widow must wear black and be in a state of mourning for the rest of her life?

It's not like she was booed immediately. She was a face for a good several months before becoming a heel. Then she moved on.

Vickie has evolved as her own character. She almost never even mentions Eddie. She is no longer defined solely as being the widow of Eddie Guerrero.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think Vicki has had an on-screen role longer than Eddie did by this point.

    ReplyDelete
  43. So David Arquette was a great heel?

    ReplyDelete
  44. She gets embarrassed in a corny slapstick manner, which would be fine if she were presented as a harmless comedy act. But she's frequently the focal point of the show. And I'm not advocating man-on-woman violence. I just don't think that anyone on a wrestling show should be regularly interacting with anybody they can't get physically involved with.

    ReplyDelete
  45. There's just some female characters like Sherri, Beth Phoenix, Chyna, Jackie, Kharma, and Luna that have been able to mix it up with their male counterparts more so than others based on their physicality or personality. Vickie just doesn't fall into that group so her comeuppance has to be of a verbal or physical nature.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I remember another wrestling site I go to had a "Hottest Wrestler" poll (with only currently employed wrestlers). I believe the top three were Morrison, Orton and Punk. Tons of female wrestling fans LOVE Punk.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Unless she gets drunk and pisses on HHH's kid, it's a lock. Then they can induct "The Guerreros" (if yhey haven't already)
