Comment of the Day
Worst_In_The_World made things pretty easy today:
To me, the biggest problem isn't that Punk shouldn't lose the title, or Rock shouldn't get it— it all comes down to the fact that all signs point to the company riding a face John Cena as the main attraction of their company coming out of Wrestlemania, because frankly I just can't imagine that working. Again, this is the equivalent of riding a post Wrestlemania 9 or so Hulk Hogan as the main attraction. There is zero upside to face Cena at this point, there is only audience attrition. Are they gonna run Cena through Cesaro, Sandow, Shield, Punk, Ziggler etc over the next 12 months? I'm guessing Vince thinks that the Rock loss/handshake finish is gonna catapult Cena into some new level of stardom, but it just isn't going to happen. If Cena hasn't become a mainstream "breakout beyond wrestling audiences" star by now, he never will. And for wrestling audiences who have seen this act at the top for going on 9 years now, the probability is that more will tune out rather than somehow get reenergized by a Cena face title run.
I'm not arguing that the only right move here is to run a smark wet dream and make Punk or Bryan the face of the company. Hell, go with Sheamus or Ryback and I'd be perfectly happy. But to waste The Rock's big loss at Mania on Cena is just an awful move for the future of WWE, especially if they couple that with HHH and Taker winning the other top two matches on the show.
On This Day...
Mike Awesome defeated Masato Tanaka in Fort Lauderdale. Da Baldies also got a rare victory over New Jack and his partner for the evening Balls Mahoney. (2000)

Hacksaw Jim Duggan picked up a victory over then WWF Champion Sgt. Slaughter, but only via a Disqualification. Hulk Hogan and Tugboat also took on Earthquake and Dino Bravo. No points for guessing who went over here. (1991)

  1. I'm very glad to hear Jerichos sticking around for a few months, a good time is had by all when that man is around. I wonder if Brock's new contract has him wrestling/showing up for more dates than this old contract? I'm not under the delusion the man will be wrestling a full schedule but I would like to see him wrestle more than two-three times per year.

Do you guys think that there's a chance the WWE will/has changed their minds and maybe do Cena vs Rock vs Punk at Mania? That match could be interesting and fun.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Thanks a lot man, that means a lot. Really appreciate it. Glad that people are getting some sort of discussion out of it. That's the main thing.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Something has to change with the Rock/Cena situation. If they're going that route then at least add a different element to last year, it has to be more than just a rematch. Add a 3rd man, a stip, turn Cena heel, anything to at least differentiate it from what we got last year.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Jesus, the formula for post-WM success is simple and I don't know why I have to keep explaining it.

Step 1: Make Cena champion by putting him over the Rock.
    Step 2: ???????
    Step 3: Profit!

See? They HAVE to make Cena champion again.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Worked well enough for the past God knows how many years..

    ReplyDelete
  6. It would be really nice, but I just can't see it.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I wonder if Brock's new deal is for just a few matches a year like this one, or if it is more like the standard wrestlers deal. Either way, I'm glad he's sticking around.

    ReplyDelete
  8. 1. I'm very interested in seeing the number of buys the Rumble gets this year. Has anyone heard any projections? Punk FINALLY gets to headline with the Rock. They had a good build up, the Rumble is one of the big 3 shows. (Didn't we used to have more than that?) The WWE may look differently at Punk if he puts up a big number with Rock. (Though most likely it will be seen as Rock put up the number when it's Rock/Punk. Cena&Rock put up the number together when it's Rock/Cena)

    2. Of COURSE Brock would sign another contract. This year has probably been the easiest five million dollars he ever made. Same goes for Y2J. He's allowed to work whatever program he wants with whoever he wants and can leave whenever.

    3. Gods. Haven't we done the fired angle enough already? I want my Dangerous Alliance 2, electric boogaloo. (though actually this may be Dangerous Alliance 4ish.) Paul is too good to take off TV.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Storyline-wise...Don't managers simply get a percentage of their client's payday? Why would Vince give a performance review of an employee of Punk?

    ReplyDelete
  10. The fact that it took Punk losing the title in an awful match in order for me to win my first "Comment of teh Day" is very bittersweet, for sure.

Also, someone needs to tell Zack Ryder that the self-depricating can be endearing, but self-loathing is not. Yes, the way they jobbed him out post TLC last year was terrible, blah blah. But his constant stream of public crybabying is definitely not doing his career any favors, either with fans or the alpha male front office. Nobody wants to cheer for someone with that personality.

    ReplyDelete
  11. His spot in TNA will always be safe.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I don't think he's whining. The only time I saw him whining in his videos was when he was doing the "heel" promos and complaining was an appropriate thing for him to do. I think he's just taking digs at the writing staff and I think the digs are usually pretty good. I think Zack wants to get "Future Endeavored". He ended his show, he has a million followers on Twitter, and he may have just been waiting for his merch sales to finally take a dip.

Barring him finally turning heel and being part of the Ziggler clique, I don't see a lot for him, so why not nibble on the hand that feeds you?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Did you really think the match itself was that bad?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Is it just me or is it highly illogical to have the Shield attack. Even under darkness. It doesn't help Punk. It wasn't to weaken the Rock, because Punk wouldn't have known the match was continuing. All it would do is strip him of the title.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think there's biting the hand that feeds you in a way that makes you (and your character) look good, and one that makes you look bad. And frankly, I just think Ryder makes himself looks bad. He doesn't portray himself as an angry, cool dude who's getting the shaft from higher ups— he just comes off as a petulant child who is probably getting what he deserves.

    ReplyDelete
  16. So Chris Jericho vs Dolph Ziggler at Wrestlemania in a gimmick match or do they go with Dolph cashing in his briefcase the manly way and challenge Alberto Del Rio?

    ReplyDelete
  17. It feels like Jericho/Ziggler will be the "hot opener" and then we'll see Ziggler cash in later that night.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Only way Cena-Rock will be interesting is if Cena is behind the Shield. I mean Super Cena is against injustice right? I really don't think he will ever go heel so there goes that...

You think All Cena all the time is primarily Vince? Like if his limo blew up tomo, would HHH and Steph keep him as the God and savior of WWE? I feel like Hunter's ego would take over and he'd want to change gears to Sheamus or another buddy just to get the spotlight off John. I mean kayfabe wise he's going to go down as the greatest superstar ever and I'm sure that grinds Hunters gears.

At the same time I also remember reading somewhere that the head of USA - Bomnie Hammer I think?- loves Cena big time. Plus the Cena character is Steph's creative claim to fame so I guess maybe nothing would really change

    ReplyDelete
  19. No numbers yet, but it's traditionally been the 2nd best selling show for a few years now and I don't see it changing this year. It's done about 450,000 buys each year since 2009 consistently.

    ReplyDelete
  20. It's nice to have some random stuff to talk about. Keep it up man!

    ReplyDelete
  21. And I'm sure leading up to Mania they will be partners in a wacky tag match, "never before, every now and then"

    ReplyDelete
  22. Wow, they're really going all in with the bad ideas this year, huh? I get that Jericho loves playing a heel, and is really good at it, but I think he's at that point in his career where fans just want to cheer him no matter what. How does this get Ryback over? You'll have the majority of the crowd cheering for Y2J, plus does it really make Ryback look like that much of a monster beating a guy of Jericho's size?

Why not keep Jericho face and have him put over Ziggler in a great match, and let Ryback squash and shellshock Big Show in 2 minutes?

    ReplyDelete
  23. The more I think about it, the more I realize that Vince is just parroting nWo-era WCW to perfection, by drawling a line right down the middle and placating both sides. The kids and causal fans will eat up anything to do with Cena, Orton, Sheamus no questions asked, while the "more discerning fans" like us will tolerate Cena etc. so that we don't miss awesome stuff like Hell No and Ziggler.

It's no different than the endless masturbatory nWo booking on top with the workrate guys on the undercard.

It's win/win for Vince. He's got everybody roped in.

    ReplyDelete
  24. that was *quite* the comment of the day. I don't know that I've seen so many thumbs-up on a single comment. Well done.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I absolutely love it, as well. So glad I don't have to tread the dangerous waters of the other sites. Thank you very much!

    ReplyDelete
  26. as long as The Rock is in better ring shape by then, I think that's enough of a "stipulation." He just wasn't ready for a 30 minute match last year. However, now that he's got the strap, he should be quite ready by the time April rolls around, making for a much more entertaining match.

    ReplyDelete
  27. If nothing else, now i can read witty things wrestlers put on twitter without signing up myself, the AJ one was pretty funny.

    ReplyDelete
  28. petulant child maybe, but whatever it is that makes people turn in to tweets is working. And all of that is without being on television on a regular basis and losing every match he's in. I'm not saying he's a good worker, though I think he could be with some actual development and more training in a different location. Maybe TNA? I've been saying Japan for a while, just because I think that character would draw in Japan. But not a lot of other wrestlers have a million twitter followers. (If we're talking about tweets, the number should be mentioned I feel.)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Cena is just about the only major face star that the Shield haven't attacked yet, so it would incredible long-term planning if it turned out that Cena WAS behind them and this was part of a long-burn heel turn. I have less than zero faith that this ends up being true, however.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I don't get how Vince can do a 'performance review' on Heyman. Heyman isn't a WWE employee --- he's a manager. I realize that this is probably just the first step in getting Lesnar back or setting up Punk's rematch with Rock, but still, it makes no logical sense.

That said, if it leads to Heyman getting 'fired,' and forming a new Dangerous Alliance of Punk, Lesnar and the Shield to take over WWE, I'm all for it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ditto. Kind of a nice news feed. Beats the 100 Scooter clones just typing up recaps and stuffing snowflakes/crappy jokes down our throats.

    ReplyDelete
  32. My rant got me 47 upvotes. Never even had close to that before.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I love it too. Awesome in every way. Please keep it up, if you have the time.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I noticed the same thing. I keep flashing back to Austin's WM heel turn and dream that they're going to go the same route with Cena. That would kick all kinds of ass. And set up an insta-feud with Punk when he claims that Cena's guys cost him the title last night. It would be spectacular.

    ReplyDelete
  35. lol. That happens to me all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm beginning to think that may be why his push seemed to get cut off.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Brock re-signing makes me think that a rematch with HHH is unlikely.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I get the most upvotes of all time. Thing is, people don't actually press the upvote button b/c they're so astounded at the sheer brilliance of my posts, and realize that said brilliance is evident to all. Furthermore, to upvote it would make them look like disciples (n/Beefcake), and they know I'm benevolent enough to allow them to keep their dignity.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I thought the same thing... though I would have been happy about it since it meant not having a divas match.

Was it 47? Damn. I thought I had the lead, with my Flair comment earning me something like 30-31 votes. Oh well, I gotta be at least number 2 then.

    ReplyDelete
  41. What Flair comment?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Just post it anyway. 90% of the comments on this blog basically just parrot each other already.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I said it before and I'll repeat it now. The only acceptable finish to Rock VS Cena II is Cena turning heel to win the title. If Cena wins, as a face, the crowd will boo Cena out of the building (and probably throw garbage at the ring) and fans will tune out in droves. Knowing WWE, Cena's winning as a face like everybody expects.

    ReplyDelete
  44. anyone else see the rumored Brahma Bull belt Rock may debut tonight? Somehow it's not an improvement over the spinner belt....why can't we have the Eagle or the Undisputed title circa 2002? I know, I know because "fuck you!"....

    ReplyDelete
  45. It's a design from back in 1998. It's bullshit.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I had a combined 50+ from two posts(Brothers of destruction line, shitty shop), but 47 on one is a fine feat.

It helps that you were pretty spot on.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Why are they making specialized belts for a certain wrestler? So dumb.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Never mind the fact that the Tri-State area doesn't like Ryback, and loves Jericho.

    ReplyDelete
  49. cultstatus and his prophetic "Table's not gonna hold Rock's weight" comment waz robbed!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Nostradamus up in this bitch.

    ReplyDelete
  51. as they hopped up on to the table, I mentioned the same thing to my buddy: "These tables aren't built like they used to be..."

    *CRASH!*

in another table spot, where we all thought Kofi was going to jump from the table back to the ring/steps, were you not also screaming at him to throw the damn table hood on the floor??!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I was screaming at him to stay on the table. Why get back in the ring when you have a safe perch to watch from without getting beat up?

    ReplyDelete
  53. well, he'd have to get back in at some point to win the darn thing!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I said the same thing in the live thread.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Thanks for the reminder about New Jack/Baldies feud, Dan. I had long forgotten about that period in ECW.

Talk about a feud that accomplished absolutely nothing.
There was no point to it whatsoever, it dragged on forever and it didn't even have a blowoff to justify the many months of wasted TV and PPV time.

Now that I think about it, that description also describes every "TNA Roster vs. (Insert Heel Faction Here)" feud as well.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I second that. I love that the sites Dan provides links to are completely safe, credible and worthy of getting hits.

No need to give those assholes at 411 and Inside Pulse hits that they don't deserve.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Thanks for the reminder of that awful New Jack/Baldies feud Dan, I had long forgotten about that dark period in ECW.

Talk about a feud that accomplished absolutely nothing.
That feud had no point to it whatsoever, dragged on forever, had a grand total of zero good matches and it didn't even have a blowoff to justify the many months of TV and PPV time that had been wasted on the feud.

And now that I think about it, that description would also apply to every "TNA Roster vs. (Insert Heel Faction Here)" feud as well.

In the Raw thread where Flair came back and delt with CM Punk, I said

"When Flair got hit in the stomach with Punk's crutch I was surprised he didn't blade"

    ReplyDelete
  59. remember nodq? i mean, themayem? i mean, wwfwcw?

    ReplyDelete
  60. I figured if he had tried to jump from the table, he would've slipped on the hood and fucked up. So I was screaming at him to get the hood off the table for better traction. The chair thing was kind of a buzzkill, honestly.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Agreed. I thought it would've gone another 5-10 minutes. The final pinfall was completely anti-climatic too.
