Here's one I never thought i'd see. Mick Foley vs Andre in a tag match
from 1991. My only recollection of Andre in 91 was him using that hand
crutch. It's weird seeing him wrestle.
That is some weird, wild stuff there, chief. Just when I think I’ve seen every crazy dream match, YouTube finds another one.
He never worked a match with WCW. He was doing tag matches in Japan at that point, though as you can see he was barely mobile.
ReplyDeleteI think Foley was in WCW then, but I'm pretty sure they let him work Japan shows as well at that point.
This is an awesome find. I've always had somewhat of a morbid curiosity to see Andre work after WM6, which was his last WWF match and pretty much the last time he wrestled on TV if I recall correctly.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a bunch of matches from Andre's 91-92 Japan tour (including this one) -- he looks much more immobile and in pain in 1992, but he still shouldn't have been in a ring at this point either. BTW, Andre was only in Turner's WCW in January 1992 during the TBS Clash special (he was only interviewed).
ReplyDeleteAndre was looking relatively spry in this match for his general state in 1991.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine that he enjoyed working these matches in the tail end of his career. He must have been handled his money even worse than Ric Flair!
I think Foley was still bouncing around the indies at this point. When he went to WCW in the fall of 91, the money was pretty great and he didn't need to be doing the indies.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to remember the name of the fed that Foley said he worked for where he said Andre was also employed there at the same time. I remember him mentioning something along the lines of having a match that spilled into a casino and he pile drove someone onto a roulette table.
ReplyDeleteThe casino match was against Sabu. I can't remember if it was an ECW one or just a random indie fed. He said something along the lines that they were probably lucky they didn't get "taken out back" for brawling in the casino and spilling peoples' chips and money all over the place.
ReplyDeleteI remember reading about that match during the old tape trading days. Wonder if it was any good? Those two had the potential to do something insane or an incredible train wreck.
ReplyDeleteI don't think ECW ever played Vegas. Definitely not in 1994.
ReplyDeleteI UPLOADED THIS, YAY!!
ReplyDeleteWCW let Cactus go at some point in late '90/early '91, and hired him back in late '91/early '92. As far as Andre, I figure he just didn't have the heart to stop wrestling.
ReplyDeleteThis is when Cactus was in All Japan, IIRC (Andre's partner was one of the old AJPW midcard lifers). WCW had a deal with New Japan, but I'm not sure if Foley ever worked New Japan or not,
ReplyDeleteDusty Rhodes vs. Hulk Hogan was mindblowing discovery too. (As for Hogan vs. Butcher, Abdullah -- not Brutus)
ReplyDeleteI hear Savage vs. Bret from a Japanese House show the WWF gave in 1994 was great as well.
I thought it was more like November 1992? Just a few months before he died.
ReplyDeleteAndre actually had some matches in Mexico in 92', days before his death.
ReplyDeleteHilariously enough, I just checked the UWF section in his book, he mentions the guys he worked with, one of which included Andre. Unfortunately, he doesn't cover this match, instead he covers the match he had with Jimmy Snuka.
ReplyDeleteit's quite dis-heartening to see Andre struggle in the ring like that. He can hardly get in & out of it without stumbling.
ReplyDeleteglory hound ;)
ReplyDeleteHe was in France for a week before he died, so it couldn't have been days.

ReplyDeleteAndre's last match.
