JohnPetuka provided a fascinating link for us all to enjoy:
Speaking of childhood memories and the good ol days, someone went through a lot of trouble to put Ric Flair's first six months in the WWF into a 2 hour youtube movie of sorts. Pretty neat. Here's the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCgxDJ-QnLE

On This Day...
WCW presented Superbrawl '98 (nope, this isn't the same as yesterday, honest..), where Sting defeated Hollywood Hogan to win the WCW World Title for a whopping 7th time!

  1. It's really a shame Dutch is killing it with this character, now that Mr. 'What's a Weed Carrier?' decided to get arrested. I long for the 80s when people smoked their weed and Vince turned a blind eye.

Clearly? I personally feel that Cena is one of the greatest of all time.

He's had just as many classic matches as Punk, and can carry people just as well, if not better. I mean, we're talking about a guy who gave Lashley & Khali their best matches, that weren't just passable, but down right good. Then, and he should be in the HOF for this, he got a ***** match out of JBL [the I Quit]. Any time he went in the ring with a guy who was great, they churned out classics [Shawn, Edge, Punk, The Rock] and he's the King of multiple-man matches, having just about everyone he's been in break 4 stars [Vengeance 2005, Wm 24, WM25, Backlash 2007, Backlash 2009 NOC 2010 [I think]. With Punk & Cena, I believe they're on the same level, with my personal taste going to Cena.

Ugh. Superbrawl. So, we've got the build up to WCW's biggest match. Sting wins in odd fashion, so they settle the hash the next night, again, odd fashion, so the title is held up FOR TWO MONTHS. He finally wins when everyone has stopped giving a shit, and then after almost 2 years of build up he's champ for a cool month, with his only PPV defense & win again Scott Hall. It'd be another year before he won the title, and even then it was for a cool hour or so.

  4. Titus is the star of the team anyway. And there's no real tag division.

    ReplyDelete
  5. You know who you can't say that about?

    Triple H.

    ReplyDelete
  6. The Khali match wasn't good, it was watchable, which was admittedly a feat.

***** for Cena-JBL I Quit? I go **** for that one, but to each his own.

I think Cena was underrated for so long that he's now overrated. This is a guy who put on some of the worst main events in recent memory against Miz, R-Truth and Big Show. Granted, none of those guys (sans Show) is a good wrestler, but let's not act like Cena is some miracle worker. His best days are behind him.

    ReplyDelete
  7. They just never let him hold it very long.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Don't be too sure. I remember reading that the spinner belt was worth a ridiculous amount of $$$ b/c of all the jewels encrusted in it. Might be that the big dub is the same.

    ReplyDelete
  9. It's always interesting to try to determine who gave downvotes. In this case, obviously some goodbacks!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Oh he's had some amazing matches. I'm not denying that at all. I suppose I could have put that more artfully. I was more referring to who's the better wrestler right at this moment, but I concede that "clearly" is a bad choice of words.

    ReplyDelete
  11. The spinner belt, as gaudy as it was, looked expensive. Look up pics on google comparing the original gold belt with the new one - I'm not saying it's not equally as expensive - but it looks cheaper.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Lashley held his own in that main event. It's a match you can watch repeatedly. LOVE Lashley going amatuer on him in the opening minutes. It's a shame he flaked out after that, because he was on the verge of something really good.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I don't know that it would change his character that much. It's not like he gives promos. It just means feuding with a face. But since faces can feud with each other...

    ReplyDelete
  14. The other reaction is... Titus O'Neil time to run with the big dawgs baby! BARK BARK BARK BARK

    ReplyDelete
  15. Agreed, it was more just an excuse to make a lame joke.

    ReplyDelete
  16. remember that month when there was? Good times everybody.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The only reason he turned a blind eye to the weed is because he was in the bathroom doing blow.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Huh. Funk's an interesting comparison for Ambrose that I'd have never thought of.

I've been let down thinking this before but I think they know they have something special with him.

The only thing- and it's a minor thing- that I don't love about The Shield so far is that Reigns is talking more and screaming and going nuts instead of being the silent muscle. I thought he did a great job of conveying intensity by saying little.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh man, reading Bret's stories of Vince getting bombed with the wrestlers is hilarious. Especially when the one party ended with Vince taking a giant piss on Ric Flair's bed.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Greatest group that only included 1 current wrestler. Those 3 just so perfectly complemented each other.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The NWA/WCW Big Gold Belt was more gold in color than the WWE version. WWE's has more of a bronze tone to it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. And he was probably the second person to piss it that night.

    ReplyDelete
  23. WIth WWE's love of random nostalgia, I guess it is a little surprising they've never tried to have Punk work the Konami Code into a promo.

"That's right John, we know why you're always in the main event! You went UP to Jim Ross, who sent you UP to Vince McMahon. You got DOWN on your hands and DOWN on your knees, and LEFT your pride RIGHT outside the door, while Vince LEFT my RIGHT to be the true WWE Champion by the wayside. Once you were the face of the B A star campaign, it was the START of your 30 shots at the championship!"

Then Cena comes out in a HUSTLE LOYALTY SKYRIM shirt, and says Contra is poopy.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love that your evidence for Cena being an all-time great are your own batshit match rating that almost no one would ever agree with. Yes, I know it's all subjective. Yes, I also think Cena has been an excellent worker over the last seven years. On the other hand, you're fucking insane.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the spinner fixed in place the last few years? I know Rock spun it last week but I don't recall that thing ever spinning for quite some time.

Haven't really read much of people's opinions on the new belt, but I like it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yeah, Cena is a really good worker and he doesn't get credit deserved by us smarks but I can't put him on the same level as Punk. Cena is great at working a WWE main event style match meanwhile Punk is great at working many different styles. He's put on great matches that don't fit into the WWE mold. As for on the mic it's obviously a no contest to anybody above the age of 12.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It's funny how you mention Calibers "batshit match ratings" and call him insane meanwhile everything in that post gets pretty close to Scott's ratings yet I don't see you calling Scott insane.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The post-Rumble promo is the greatest winners promo ever.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The WM 25 match is ****? Come on.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Watching it, Flair said in one of his first promos that when he saw Piper, we was smack him right in the mouth. And then, lo and behold, the first time he ran into Piper the belt shot.

Flair, a man of his word, at least in storyline terms if not financial matters.

    ReplyDelete
  31. SCOTT'S INSANE!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think most of the Cena hate comes from his promos, character, and staleness, not his ring work. I don't think he's top 10 ever, but as far as the top guy he's amassed more great matches than Hogan.

But if I were making a list of my top 10 wrestlers he probably wouldn't be on it, but he's had a lot of great matches.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I guess Swagger made it to the big time, he's trending on Yahoo right now. Ewww, I feel like Michael Cole.

    ReplyDelete
  34. More of Ninja Gaiden guy here.

    ReplyDelete
  35. If he were to turn heel, I'd really like to see something akin to his "Skip Sheffield" persona - he was an AWESOME heel in "Nexus", being equal parts cunning and crazy.

They'll likely just make him another "angry and intense" heel, cutting promos in the same stilted, mechanical way that he does now. Shame, cuz the guy is definitely good on the mic.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Um, Hacksaw Duggan and Iron Sheik got caught smoking weed in their car in the 80's. They definitely didn't turn a blind eye to that.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ouch! Sounds painful.

    ReplyDelete
  38. My only problem with Reigns is that when he starts screaming "Believe in the Shield!" it sounds like Joe Swanson on "Family Guy" to me. Really, it would be better if they just let Ambrose do all the talking.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm already nostalgic for it. They ran a tournament and everything!

    ReplyDelete
  40. When you say Skip Sheffiled persona, that makes me think he's going to start saying "Yip yip, what it do!" before squashing Kofi Kingstons and Zack Ryder. I'm all for it.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Wasn't that more because Hacksaw and Iron Sheik should have never been hanging out than anything else?

    ReplyDelete
  42. And that's why Hogan was the political master.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh lord, he's got a knee injury! Ain't nobody got time for that!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Wouldn't they need to balance out the universe by turning Mark Henry face?

    ReplyDelete
  45. it was some gaybacks.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Who are you to doubt Mike Mears?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Can someone please post a match or interview or something to show me why Ambrose is suppose to be the second coming. Everyone is nutting themselves about this guy and all I see is a competent worker with male pattern baldness who dresses like Big Bossman.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Caliber_Winfield_69420BoobiesFebruary 23, 2013 at 8:04 AM

Good catch. I was actually thinking of 2007, with Edge, Orton, and Shawn. But 2008 was great too.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Could I post a video? Sure.

Am I gonna bother if you've already decided he's not that great? Probably not. I'm not gonna try to convince you he's awesome. You don't like him? Fair enough.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I've been asking that question for years.

    ReplyDelete
  51. No I'm serious, I want to know why he is so hyped up by everyone on here.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I see what you did there.....

    ReplyDelete
  53. I think they insert a screw or two through the back to stop it from spinning.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Duggan didnt seem to suffer much and Sheiky baby wound up coming back as Mustafa and main evented a Summer Slam....

    ReplyDelete
  55. I thought he meant Sting beat Hogan for 7 WCW titles....
