Buy the belt!

I haven't actually had a chance to watch RAW yet, but I think the final version of the new belt could grow on me.  It's certainly not as horrific as the ugly spinner piece of crap, and the interchangeable plates are a clever idea.  And hey, $450s is a pretty reasonable price for an official replica belt.  Hopefully it won't clash with Cena's jorts too badly.

Addendum:  As noted, I haven't watched either the PPV yet, but given they wanted to debut the new belt and Punk had possession of the old belt, am I the only one who can put two and two together?   Why did we not have a Curt Hennig tribute angle with a hammer or a Steve Austin tribute with a bridge?  Seems like it would fit perfectly with Punk's character right now.  Plus I would RELISH the chance to watch someone smash that fucking piece of shit spinner belt into a thousand pieces.  RELISH IT.

  1. I don't think it's all that bad. It would definitely be nice if they had something like a globe, or a crown, or whatever, rather than their corporate logo front and center, but this is the way of the world.

And at least it's not overly stylized like the diva's belt.

And yeah, almost anything is better than the spinner, really.

  2. Malibu Stacy has a new hat??? WOW!!!

    ReplyDelete
  3. Or Jeff Hardy's belt. I just looked at that for the firs time and that looks like a rejected She-Ra accessory,

    ReplyDelete
  4. I never thought it was such a bad little belt.

It's not bad at all, really. Maybe it just needs a little love.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Punk DID clobber Cena with the spinner belt, so that's a start i guess

    ReplyDelete
  6. Your "Buy the Belt!" reminded me of Kevin Nash's old "Buy the Shirt!". Made me laugh.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I don't hate it. It doesn't look quite representative of a crowning achievement that something like the World Heavyweight/WCW Title looks like due to the absence of gold. Rather, the face reminds me of a trendy buckle that would go with a regular leather belt, except it's 10 times larger.

...It's definitely an improvement, in the very least.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Look, zanadude, let's face it. We all know that Wrestling is a big commercial racket. It's run by a big eastern syndicate, you know.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Ha! I never thought of it as a belt buckle, now, I might not be able to think about it in any other way.

We have "The Big Gold Belt" and "The Big Ass Belt Buckle" and...it's still better than the fucking spinner belt imo.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I agree. If it had the Earth or a wrestling ring or something in the background it would help. It's definitely an improvement. The look reminds of what championship rings tend to look like.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Lights please.

And there were in the same country wrestlers abiding in the ring, keeping watch over Pedro by night. And, lo, the angel of the Rock came upon them, and the glory of the Rock shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, finally...finally...FINALLY, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all smart marks. For unto you is born this day in the city of Hayward a Saviour, tis Christ the Rock. And this shall be a sign unto you..wait a minute, it doesn't *matter* what the sign is! And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising Rock, and saying, Glory to Rock in the highest, if you smell what The Rock is cooking.

That's what Wrestlemania is about, Mr. Mahn.

    ReplyDelete
  12. As a belt nerd I've waited 8 long years and boy were they long, and they give me this monstrosity. Seriously it's terrible, I could imagine a 5 year old 'slow' kid with a short attention span drawing something similar to that main plate if asked too, that's the level of creativity we're dealing with here.

    Belt snobbery aside..

I will begrudgingly purchase you gaudy belt Vince.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Since the classic Eagle belt, it has gotten progressively worse with each change.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Happy WrestleMania zanadude!

    ReplyDelete
  15. They should gimmick that old belt so Brock can bite it in half or something

    ReplyDelete
  16. I would greatly enjoy that.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Every Wrestlemania it's the same. I always end up saying "DAMN!".

    ReplyDelete
  18. I really liked the first undisputed title belt.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Disagree. I was actually never a big fan of the Winged Eagle belt. It always looked too small. Personally, I think the Undisputed title was the best design out of them all.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Please don't call it a belt buckle. Kindly refer to it as a championship buckle or a title buckle. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I got a bit of a kick out of that, actually. Between him stealing the belt a few weeks ago and then hijacking it backstage last night, CM Punk -- of all people -- is coming across as the guy who won't let go of the Spinner belt.

    ReplyDelete
  22. YES. They should have brought that back. It was awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Also, why are they still going with the scratch logo? It's horribly dated at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Unfortunately, I think destroying the belt would be considered over the top to the current WWE management. Rock even said "here, make sure this gets in the hall of fame" and was very careful to throw in a good word between the insults while he was talking about it. Maybe I'm grasping at straws but I get the impression he was told "don't TOTALLY bury it." Maybe so Mattell can still sell the back stock?

An aside: I've been watching Raw on Hulu plus and I've got to say it's MUCH better. 80-90 minutes is so much more reasonable than 3+ hours. Plus, the Hulu version automatically trims most of the irrelevant segments for me! The only thing I felt like I missed out on this week was the backstage Hell No segment. Beyond that, it was all fluff, as near as I can tell from the reviews.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Made me think if El Giagnte "I WANT DA BELT"

    ReplyDelete
  26. Better than the spinner belt but it still looks way too much like a college ring or something. The logo is way too big and I don't really like all the diamonds. Digging the plates though. Wish they'd go for a less gaudy design.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Might as well be a class ring. The WWE backstage is apparently one big high school anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Buy my belt!
    Buy my belt!
    Buy my belt!
    Buy my belt!

    ReplyDelete
  29. The eagle was a little small but it was awesome nonetheless. The Hogan 1986 belt was up there too. The undisputed belt was a nice design, although the front looked better than the side plates -- which looked sorta cheap.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Maybe kids will start referring to their schools as their "Real Life Universe"

    ReplyDelete
  31. It's better than the spinner belt. That's not saying much, but it's something.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The one that Brock wore looked bigger than the one that was given to Triple H. I could be wrong but at first glance it looked too small and then it looked bigger, and more impressive. My favorite is the one Triple H wore but Undisputed is a close second.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It reminded me of Tito Santana.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yeah, the Undisputed one was pretty sweet.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Vince bless us, everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  36. It still reminds me of the shape of the US belt..but being a UWF fan I always liked when the belts have a similar style to the World title. I've always thought that the Smackdown belts should have their own distinct style and RAW have their own style.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Its like switching a bucket of shite for a cup of pissed. The buckets worse but in the end there's nothing good about s cup filled with pissed either.

Would better if the belt looked like something that looked like it represented something other than a corporate logo.

    ReplyDelete
  38. From what I've heard, they sometimes cut out good matches for those occasional stupid segments.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Diamonds should only go on the Million Dollar Man's belt. Anything else just looks stupid and tacky.

    ReplyDelete
  40. ...? Why would they need to gimmick it?

    ReplyDelete
  41. This is the best title design currently in wrestling. I wished WWE would have ripped it off.

    http://www.midwestwrestling.com/kobreggie/images/belts/iwgp/heavy4th/4th09.JPG

TNA's rip off of it was a favorite too. Can't believe they got rid of it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Because the Million Dollar Belt was not stupid and tacky?

    ReplyDelete
  43. However, the classic Eagle belt was introduced in the worst way of them all. One minute Hogan is giving an interview wearing the Wrestlemania III belt, and a few seconds later, he's walking down the aisle wearing the Eagle!

    ReplyDelete
  44. The Million Dollar Belt was supposed to look stupid and tacky, it was "Bling" before the term existed. And that wasn't an actual title belt.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Switch out "Attitude Era belt" with "classic Eagle belt" and I fully agree. I loved the Rock era belt, though the Diesel belt (I started watching in 95, so that's how I think of it) was great too.

    ReplyDelete
  46. It wasn't a belt? What was it then, a necktie?

    ReplyDelete
  47. This is my biggest problem with the new design. The scratch logo needs to disappear. Using a new logo would improve it tenfold.

    ReplyDelete
  48. It would be a damn sweet necktie, and would be a better belt than any of the bets they use now. But it wasn't a real title. Why not throw in the Taz FTW title? Same thing.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yeah, that's one of the first really big production faux paus I can remember the WWF having -- and on the most watched wrestling program ever.

The whole transition between the Hogan 86 belt to that belt was so strange. They originally promised that "win lose or draw" that WrestleMania III was the last time we'd see the belt, with that huge belt made for Andre presumably going to the winner (that ended up as a prop in No Holds Barred instead). I wonder if the winged eagle was supposed to debut then.

Then the goof happens (and Andre compounds it by making his own goof, calling it the tag team title).

I've always wondered if having Hogan come out wearing the Eagle belt was a last minute decision so that the two belts would match in the leadup to WrstleMania IV in the recap packages, but then again the WWF always treated the fans like idiots with their belts, see Curt Hennig winning the tag belt in 1990 and Ric Flair proudly displaying a WWF tag belt to crowds during the video distortion angle.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I loved the modified winged eagle belt. The one used from 1998-2001. That's my favorite title belt of all the times.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Yeah I always thought the whole point of the Million Dollar Belt was that it was supposed to look ridiculous, because it was an essence a vanity belt, made for a rich yuppie heel so he could lord it over the other champions that it was worth more than their belts and also allow the marks to give him crap because he didn't beat anyone for it / couldn't unseat Hogan, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I swear, I think this is worst looking belt I've ever seen, in any promotion. "Worse than the Divas title, or the Hardy TNA title that looks like the Divas title?" Yep, by a mile.

WWE posted an article about the history of the belts, and even said that the "winged eagle" belt was the most popular. So why isn't that the new belt, instead of the horrendous piece of shit that was on TV last night?

    ReplyDelete
  53. I don't accept Andre's surrendering of the belt, seeing as he surrendered the wrong title.

In my mind, Andre kept the title under he lost it to Hogan in that Wrestlefest cage match, then Hogan unified it with the WWF Interim title at Wrestlemania V.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Mine too, outside of the Big Gold Belt, and I might like the 1998-2001 WWF belt better than that. And I was never a big fan of the undisputed belt. Just looked small and midcardish to me, like it would have been a great replacement for the IC title.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Well, he did toss it on the ramp before leaving, which I assumed was the final bit of symbolism of it being retired.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I never thought I'd say this but GIVE ME BACK THE SPINIER

    ReplyDelete
  57. Fuck yeah. At least the spinner looked all big and gaudy, which is how a belt should look. And it was ugly (though not nearly as ugly as this one) but I liked how the spinner belt looked like it had weight to it, like if a guy hit you with a belt shot whit that belt it would wreck you. Like getting cracked with a ringbell, the spinner belt looked like it weighs close to what a ringbell weighs.

Someone on another site site said that he could stick a Sharpie up his butt and squat over a piece of paper and fart out a better belt design. And he's right, this belt not only looks like it's marketed to 5 year old's, but was drawn by a 5 year old. With a broken arm. The "Church of the mother's basement" (as Fuji put it) guys might not have the best workers, or the best production values, or the most fans. But now it's official: the indy geeks follow the promotions that have the better belts. FAR better.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I like that, "The Big Ass Belt Buckle" championship.

    ReplyDelete
  59. The Attitude belt was great, man. It was a similar design to the Winged Belt, except it didn't have the wings that didn't adhere to the leather and would look like they'd snap off.

Both belts were intricately designed, mostly gold with a regal blue, and they stood out as the crowning jewel of the promotion. The Undisputed Belt would have been accepted if it had been given a decade.

The new one is "cool", but very plain and doesn't look like a prize. As I said earlier, it looks more like an enlarged belt buckle.

The best one is the WHC. Its lineage technically began in 2002, but it's the same physical one as WCW's and it looks fucking grand. Plus, you can spray paint 'nWo' on it and play it like a guitar.

Here's what they need to pay attention to: whatever the belt looks like, it should be so big and heavy enough that even a guy like The Rock should have *a little* bit of trouble grabbing it with one hand. It looked like a frisbee with straps, I thought a labrador was going to come in and snatch it from him.

    ReplyDelete
  60. But it had the most tradition with champions like Hogan, Savage, Warrior, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels. Every change in the design is da degrade of the new champion. And I hate a wrestling hw title which has only "champion" on it. There must be "World Wrestling Entertainment Heavyweight Wrestling Champion" written and not only "champion". This looks so cheap.

    ReplyDelete
  61. The spinner belt sucked, but it was the one that was defended when Punk & Bryan went ***** 1/4 at Over the Limit.

    ReplyDelete
  62. There is no evidence that Scott is taking this joke beyond its theoretical limit.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I think the belt they used in ECW would have being okay if they used it as the WWE Title.

    ReplyDelete
  64. It's been ridiculous to use the scratch logo since 2009.

    ReplyDelete
  65. You must be a real joy to live with.

    ReplyDelete
  66. The biggest problem with this belt is the total lack of depth and attention to detail. No background images, no nameplate, nothing but a giant WWE logo on a black background. Even that damn spinner belt had depth to it. All the historically popular belts had other shit on it that you didn't really notice until you looked at it closer.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I actually liked the new belt at first glance. A little less so when Rock actually put it over his shoulder. There's too much black in the center piece, so when guys are wearing black shirts or black trunks (and let's face it, that's a *lot* of guys), it just doesn't "pop" enough. A little more gold/bling in the center and I'd be a certified fan.
You can say you don't like it, but I'm doing some serious head shaking at the guys who actually PREFER the Spinner belt! You can throw out all the pros you want (it was heavier(?), brighter, gaudier, etc.), it still fucking SPUN therefore this new one is an upgrade.
And much like I can't blame them for sticking with stadium-only WMs, I can't blame them for wanting their company logo prominently displayed on their highest profile belt, as opposed to a globe... or eagle. Listen, I started watching in 92 so the Winged Eagle brings back some great memories. But can we please bury that thing in the past (along with MSG hosting a WM) and move on?

    ReplyDelete
  68. They'd gimmick it because the last time a big, angry, sinister looking guy tried to vent his anger and actually use full contact, he cut his arm open and spent months off-air like a dumbass!

    ReplyDelete
  69. I like it. WWE was clearly trying to play it safe here, keeping the belt looking mostly the same, except the part where it looked like it was ripped off of John Cena's album cover. The angular face plate is different, and even with the diamonds, it actually looks understated- but after its predecessor, what wouldn't? It doesn't blow me away, but it's a solid B.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Yeah, that one puzzles me too. After all the effort WWE's made to put the Attitude era firmly in the past, you'd think they'd take this time to modernize the logo.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I think the top-level title's still gotta be gold, but I'd love to see one of the secondary titles redone in silver (particularly the US title, to play off the red and blue accents). It looks gorgeous, and would give the belt some much-needed distinction.

    ReplyDelete
  72. YankeesHoganTripleHFanFebruary 20, 2013 at 7:40 AM

    Stupid Lisa garbage face.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Now that you mention it, I think they might have purposefully designed it that way.

    ReplyDelete
  74. To be fair, I think they locked the spinner in place for years before this final appearance. But it still overstayed its welcome by a long shot.

    ReplyDelete
  75. But WWE still embodies all the awful stereotypes it did before!

    ReplyDelete
  76. That has the names of all of the champions on it, which I think is fantastic.

Though I should note it's the names of all the champions since that physical belt was introduced, not all time.

    ReplyDelete
  77. What I didn't like about the Million Dollar Belt was that it was so small.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I HATE the NXT belt, but like the tag belts..

    ReplyDelete
  79. Since I'm a big fan of the WWE trolling the Interwebz....I hope Cena brings back the Spinner belt on the Raw after WrestleMania. It's just a belt.
The classic IC belt remains my favorite belt of all time and it doesn't mean anyone gives a crap about Wade Barrett or whatever jobber wears it.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Attitude era big eagle belt will always be my favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  81. If they used a version of the WW that was thicker it would help out a lot

    ReplyDelete
  82. I bought my son the child size replica of the ECW belt last christmas because it was on sale for cheap and damn I did not realize till I held it how nice that actually looked. The Phoenix in the background instead of an eagle makes so much sense and looks badass.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I'm 99% sure that there were two or three revisions of the Undisputed title.

    ReplyDelete
  84. UFC has nice-looking belts. They're gold and have the company's logo. Simple and effective.

    ReplyDelete
  85. You should rename yourself as Captain Killjoy.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Since I was at that Wrestlefest and I've never seen a WWF/E championship change, I'll accept your thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  87. If they used the same design and made the 2 W's in a classier more bold letter font and not the scratch logo it would be a lot better looking and better received. They need someone new designing these belts though, aren't championships supposed to be distinguished pieces of art? The god awful diva's title is a great example of them going against that, it looks like a toy.

    ReplyDelete
  88. The new championship isn't bad per se, it just looks cheap and lazy. It's like someone used one of those 'Create a Championship' video game modes to make it.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Two I think. They changed it to show the new WWE logo and also made it bigger.

    ReplyDelete
  90. oh no... thats terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  91. verily... verily i say to thee

    ReplyDelete
  92. for 4fiddy? fuck that limey.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Kinda like when all of the Raw titles were designated "World" while the Smackdown titles were designed "WWE." Raw had the World Heavyweight Championship and the World Tag Team Titles. Smackdown had the WWE Championship and WWE Tag Team Titles.
