Future of the Shield

Any plans for the Shield beyond the six man tags and all black getup? Are we still working towards finding out who the Shield are working for, or has that angle been abandoned? Are they now just a clan of heels who work for no one and who will eventually fall out and show up one day on Raw wearing their wrestling attire? Just wondering where you think this is going. And if you think the writers (*shudder*) have even thought that far yet.
Peace

These guys are being protected like nobody I've seen in YEARS.  You can likely have no fear about getting let down by putting your money on any of them to be a giant star very soon now, especially Ambrose and Reigns.  Even Rollins has a shot to be a top level midcard guy, but Ambrose has some serious political juice behind him, and Reigns is their guy of the future.  If I was to guess, I'd say they split them into singles later in the year and run main events against Cena for a few months to give them the rub on top and give Cena someone to defend against.  Hell, I'm shocked they haven't put the tag titles on two of them by now.

Comments

  1. I'll go back to my idea a few months ago. Give them the World title and let them Freebird it. There is a like a million different things you could spin out of that.

    ReplyDelete
  2. give Cena someone to defend against

I find your lack of "giving Cena someone to put over" disturbing.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Also, if the rumors about Rock working Extreme Rules are true, how about he puts together a super team to face The Shield at the PPV? The Rock, HHH, and Mick Foley against The Shield in a tornado 6 man would be many buys.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Rollins, of course, is the best wrestler of the three of them by far, so I'm sure he's destined for the midcard.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Two indy stars and one homegrown talent with Samoan lineage. Guess who's going to be the bigger star? There will be a Roman Reigns vs. Dean Ambrose/Seth Rollins handicap match before the year is out.

    ReplyDelete
  6. They could even dig up footage of the aborted Ambrose/Foley feud where Ambrose kept calling Mick out.

    ReplyDelete
  7. They have been put over soooooo strong. They are booked so well and huntor was apparently a moxley fan (hard not to be) so I think these guys will all end up as major stars.

    ReplyDelete
  8. That would be good - the legends band to run the Shield out of the WWE for good... only for John Cena to run in and make the super turn! Take that Bully Ray!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Speaking of indy stars: El Generico gets an NXT moniker. And it's the "least craziest" name EVAR!!!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I wouldn't put the tag titles on them. The division is so weak right now it'd be a major waste.

Honestly, I'd have the Shield break up (not having them feud, just have them chase individual titles) and let them break out as singles stars without losing a match. Then, if there's ever a need to really put over a hot babyface tag-team or group of babyfaces, have the Shield reform as the unstoppable heel team that nobody could beat before.

You could job Rollins out as much as you want as Seth Rollins, but if you turn him back into Seth Rollins of the Shield, it doesn't matter. The members get over because of the success of the team, but the group itself has it's own credibility.

    ReplyDelete
  11. WTF kind of name is that?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Considering that promos and look sell PPVs...yeah, the lisping Backstreet Boy is not getting pushed over The Joker or the werewolf.

    ReplyDelete
  13. As it should be.

Ambrose and Rollins don't need to win to get over. Reigns is supposed to be this big monster, let him do big monster stuff.

As Jim Cornette said, "He can't be throwing armdrags in the second match. Main-event or nothing."

    ReplyDelete
  14. You'd split them up now? You can still get a ton of mileage out of the Shield.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Rollins' best case scenario is if ends up being a cross between Punk and Hardy. I'm not holding my breath, but he has a chance.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh, no! I don't want to see another spinner title...

    ReplyDelete
  17. A generico one.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Thing is, he's not really that big. He's ripped all to hell but he's only like 6'3 and in the mid-upper 200s range, big but not monstrously huge by wrestling standards. And he doesn't have that shithoude build like Lesnar to compensate. Not gonna be the easiest sell to push him as a monster.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I wish they just named him, "The Generic Wrestler".

    BRAINBUSTA BY THE GENERIC WRESTLER

    ReplyDelete
  20. I could actually see that, Rollins going the Punk or Hardy route, character-wise

    ReplyDelete
  21. Sammy Sane?? I hope that doesn't stick

    ReplyDelete
  22. I don't think he has the mic skills or the charisma to do it.

He'll have the career of Owen Hart...maybe.

    ReplyDelete
  23. He's not "that big" but he still comes across as a monster. He has a lot of presence, and they really make him come across strong. And the long flowing locks of badassitude.

I mean, Batista wasn't "that big" but he was still a monster. Hell, Warrior wasn't "that big" but he was still a monster

Plus his spear is the best I've ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  24. But Owen Hart had a lot of charisma as a heel

    ReplyDelete
  25. Based on their stagnation for the last month or so and Cena COMPLETELY no-selling the loss I think the OP is more likely to be right here. The writers have no plan beyond "heels come through the crowd and fight the man!" and by June we're going to have Nexus 2.0 on our hands.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Not now. After WrestleMania.

And I really don't think you have much more mileage out of the unbeatable monster trio. They've beaten everybody...and are probably going to win at WrestleMania after an Orton heel turn. What's left? Them claiming the tag titles will both kill the division deader than it already is...and hurt the credibility of the Shield. And is their any bigger superteam then Cena/Ryback/Sheamus? What babyface is left? Why the hell would a team form to stop them, and how would it get anybody over?

And by break up, I mean pursue singles careers, still do run-ins and such for each other. But give them more individuality and character. While still keeping the rep of the Shield strong, in case in the future they ever need a super heel team.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Uhh they've already done a great job pushing him as a monster. He should be fine.

    ReplyDelete
  28. His spear is glorious. Dunno if I'd but it above Goldberg's yet, but it's close.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Would love to hear how Cena no sold the Shield.

    ReplyDelete
  30. They shouldent even care about titles. They should just be hired merks who fuck ppl up.

They seem better suited to do the stolen belt angle anyways imo
    .

    ReplyDelete
  31. By not mentioning the fact that he lost to them and moving along to his feud with the Rock like it never happened... same shit he does every time he loses.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Is his partner Timmy Tipid?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yeah, lets not build the main event of Wrestlemania so Cena can validate their existence or something. Jesus, talk about daddy issues...

    ReplyDelete
  34. What the fuck does that even mean? Can you not make a point without being insulting? You asked a question you got the correct answer. Accept it or don't.. and when you are done with that go graduate 6th grade.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Cena jobbed to them. What more do you want? Who cares if he didn't mention them the next night? Why do you need Cena's validation?

    ReplyDelete
  36. cultstatus: "Would love to hear how Cena no sold the Shield."

parallax1978: "By not mentioning the fact that he lost to them and moving along to his feud with the Rock like it never happened... same shit he does every time he loses."

You asked a question. You got an answer. I don't know how much simpler I can make this.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Not mentioning them in a promo is not no selling them.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Showing no negative effect from something IS no selling... I am no longer going to play along with your contrarianism though so feel free to continue on your own.

    ReplyDelete
  39. What negative effect? Did he get put through a table? Pinned? Did you want him to come out in DDP rib tape and cut a promo about how great Shield were even though he was barely in the match and didn't take any of their finishes?

You do realize there were slightly more important things for Cena to be doing the next night on Raw right?

    ReplyDelete
  40. I was more going total role of fill-in title contender who has a good amount of memorable feuds, not perennial mid-card heel. Seth will probably settle as a face.

    ReplyDelete
  41. They should've had them challenge for the tag titles at WM. The 6-man tag circuit is played out, and it would've given them some direction. Ambrose and Rollins could've worked the match, with Reigns as muscle. Then when they win, they defend them Freebirds-style against thrown together teams of faces who have nothing to do (i.e., the face equivalent of Team Rhodes Scholars).

Their motivation for going after the titles? Liberating Bryan from being a goon. Hint at their shared past, and the injustice of the greatest wrestler in the world being lowered to acting like a goof. It plays into the Team Hell No-breakup, and gives it some stakes beyond Kane and Bryan just yelling nonsense at each other.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Here's how I'd fantasy book the shield: put them over 3 man combinations of the tippy top banyfaces including cena in 4 star plus matches where the faces sell like crazy and also give them unique entrances and TV time...wait, what's that you say?

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think it works better as a wrestling move. Goldberg's was faster and looked more believable. But I feel that because Reigns does it slower and pushes them back as opposed to into the ground you see it better and the guy taking it has a chance to sell it with their face better..

I'm kinda talking bullshit right now, but it's fucking great. I think it's a really overrated finish, but I feel that Reigns does it so well that he should use it.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Fun fact, Jon moxley/dean ambrose has been pushed/ protected way more than cena when he debuted

    ReplyDelete
  45. I always liked it better as a set up move, fuck it, just give him the Jackhammer too. That move is way overdue to be brought back.

    ReplyDelete
  46. It doesn't count unless Cena cuts a 20 minute promo about how the Shield are the greatest thing ever.

    ReplyDelete
  47. When your booked to wrestle Orton and sheamus and whoever the 3rd guy is at wrestlemania 4 months after you debut as heels that's called a monster push

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yeah, why in the hell is no one using that? Anywhere that I'm aware of?

    ReplyDelete
  49. 4 months later how are you feeling about ambrose? Has he won you over yet? Iirc i was trying to convince you he could do more than copy ledgers mouth stuff

    ReplyDelete
  50. Smh...Cyber bullying is so 2011.

    ReplyDelete
  51. It'd be kinda cool if the Shield was used sorta how the APA used to be used. People hire them to weaken their opponents or beat up somebody they don't like or guard the ring during a match to protect against run ins. There is still some mileage in this hired mercenaries thing.

    ReplyDelete
  52. That summerslam match against cena etc killed nexus. But the shield has won every match

    ReplyDelete
  53. Yeah but that's what they do with Cena all the time. Nothing's going to change his character. He wins he brags about it. He loses, well he'll just win next time. It's how they write the character.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I have to disagree with you on your point about Cena barely being in the match. The heat segment was pretty much ALL the Shield kicking Cena's ass. He was in the match more than either Ryback or Sheamus.

    ReplyDelete
  55. What the fuck are you talking about with Batista not being "that big"? 6'3 or 6'4 and 280/300lbs of muscle isn't big?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Rhyno's gore was pretty vicious too.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I don't think he's ultimately doomed for the midcard though. With his high spots and sympathetic selling I think people can get behind him. Sort of like Jeff Hardy. He wasn't the best promo around. He had great in-ring charisma though.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Is he wearing the mask or no?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Really? I could've sworn that Cena was in the first heat spot but then didn't come back until near the end. Anyway, doesn't change my point.

    ReplyDelete
  60. As I remember Cena was in the match a lot. I think it was Sheamus who was in very little because they had Ryback do the hot tag.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Edge's was good too but it was a lot different. Batista's sucked.

    ReplyDelete
  62. For pro wrestling he wasn't humongous or anything

    ReplyDelete
  63. I guess my point is that they're starting to feel directionless now, so what's going to happen when they inevitably lose a few matches? How will they hang on to their heat if we don't get something beyond "unbeatable badasses walking through the crowd" becomes "beatable badasses"? Maybe I'm overreacting b/c they've only been stagnant for a couple weeks (since the last PPV), but with the current writing staffs tendency to megapush something, lose interest, and let that person/team die I think it's a justified to be a bit cautious.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Yup, I've been a wwe fan forever so I know them fucking something up is always in play but I'm just saying they've pushed the shit out of these guys and protected them better than any new guys I can remember.

    ReplyDelete
  65. He was ripping off Ledge super hard. Still is in a way.

I think he has charisma. Not sold on his gimmick or his ability as a worker yet. But he's going to be a star.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Yeah, I mean, it's safe, it looks cool, can be done on almost everybody.

Fuck, they gave Dolph the superkick and Shawn retired way more recently then "Bill".

    ReplyDelete
  67. I'm saying that by wrestling standards, he's not "that big".

Kane, Undertaker, Big Show, Great Khali, Giant Haystacks, Giant Gonzales. Those guys are "giants", Batista was not a giant, but he still got booked like a monster.

I mean, Batista wasn't that much bigger than Triple H, Hunter is not a monster.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Edge's was good because he hit it in a lot of interesting ways. As he got older and his neck got worse the impact got lighter and lighter.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Jeff Hardy was believable as a crazy stuntman who thought butterflies talked to him. Colby is too sane. He's too Hot Topic goth.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Eh. I'd be wary of making them too cool. Heels should be hated.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Personally, I'd like to see "The Shield" face the team of Jericho-Booker-JBL at "WM". Just seems right to me, having some decent names put them over on the big stage.

As for where they go in the future... yeah, they're pretty much directionless. Whatever happened to them helping Punk? What about Maddox helping Punk? What about "Shield" beating up Maddox? What the hell was the point of ANY of that? Unless this story-line is purposely being kept subtle and on the back-burner (which I doubt), it has just been a huge waste of time.

    ReplyDelete
  72. The fact that we're looking at Owen Hart as the worst-case scenario* for Rollins' career is pretty high praise, however. And if Rollins is the LEAST of the three Shield guys, that's a great stable.

    * = uh, not 'that' worst-case scenario....

    ReplyDelete
  73. Was there ever a story requiring someone to be behind the Shield (with the understanding that WWE often ignores the logic inconsistencies of "Who shut off the lights")? FANS speculated someone could be behind them and of course there was the question of "Is CM Punk and/or Paul Heyman behind the Shield?" (which was answered with not really but he was paying them to help Punk). I don't think there ever was an angle to abandon, we just created one in our heads. They never really tried to claim someone HAD to be behind Shield, and the Shield always denied that anyone was behind them.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I'm not sure what you were looking for, it was all resolved on the Raw where Brock returned. Maddox and the Shield were being paid by Paul Heyman to help Punk keep his title. Maddox stopped helping Punk because they got pissed at him stalking them and paid the Shield to beat him up, then Maddox gave Vince the video to screw Heyman. After that they presumably stopped paying The Shield since it was no longer a secret and they had started including stips saying that Punk would lose his title if the Shield got involved. The point was to introduce 3 new guys in big roles while allowing Punk to retain the title but giving his opponents an "out", and it was eventually used to set up Brock VS HHH, via Heyman and Vince. They're fairly directionless at the moment, I agree, but the story served its purpose and was resolved.

    ReplyDelete
  75. In fairness though, I see your point but Cena does this all the time (and it might be the writers fault, but still). In order to build Rock/Cena 2, NOW he says Rock/Cena 1 ruined his whole life and caused him to have this horrific year, except that for the past year, except a vague the better man won on Raw the night after WM, he never brought it up once, he immediately beat Brock Lesnar at the next PPV, and pretty much spent the whole year either winning every match or losing due to crazy shenanigans (Big Show attack when he had the title won at Raw 1000, Big Show attack after he played with Johnny's lifeless corpse in their match, Punk stealing a cheap win in a triple threat, Shield attack, etc). I totally understand your point about building to the more important match, and he should be doing that. On the other hand, there's been a lot of filler since EC (hell, this past week he played with Pancake Patterson!) and it would have been nice if some reference was made to The Shield beating his team, even if it's only to remind people that Cena has unfinished business with The Shield post WM.

It's what bothers me so much about Rock/Cena 2. They had a year to at least hint that it bothered Cena AT ALL, and they didn't do it, not once, until ALL OF A SUDDEN it was the worst loss ever and his whole life was ruined, especially when he beat Brock at Extreme Rules (and how stupid does THAT look in retrospect, Brock winning would have contributed to this current storyline, made Brock look even better than he does now, and set up a huge rematch post WM). They do this often with Cena...he doesn't care until suddenly he does out of nowhere. He doesn't care about the title, openly giving up title shots so Zach Ryder can have a US title shot, then suddenly the title is the most important thing ever. There's no consistency to his characters motivations, and as much as we can just blame WWE, other guys have some semblance of consistency (like Punk).

    ReplyDelete
  76. Their secret leader all along: The Big Bossman.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I was trying not to go there...

Hey, Seth is a talented guy, but I just don't see main-eventer in him.

And the Shield is a great stable, it's what Nexus should've been. 3 top prospects kicking ass and taking names, no dead-weight, no jobbers, a trio of badasses.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Definitely. He's not the biggest guy on the roster but he's definitely got the aura of a monster. Tackling guys through barricades, spearing the shit out of Big Show, "Move, fools! This is OUR table now!" he's got it down pretty damn well already. And put me down +1 for his spear being fan dabby babulous.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Now, hold on.

With Evolution, I was certain that Orton was the one getting the biggest rub from being involved with the stable. Instead, it was Batista who got THE feud with Triple H.

(Orton, like the bitch that he is, is still treated like royalty. At least Batista has gone on to being the bigger star.)

You never know how things will end up. I never thought Reigns would be the one that most of us would pay attention to, but here we are.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I agree, but I'm baffled by the fact that he just doesn't cut good promos. I've seen some of his Twitters and some of the blogging he did back for the Project 161 build, and he's quite good with the written word. But for some reason when it comes time to say things, he's a great big anthropomorphic meh.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I would love the hell out of that scenario.

    ReplyDelete
  82. It's like they wanted to push it like it was an earth shattering loss for Cena except they didn't bother booking towards that. They TOLD us it was an awful loss that led to a downward spiral for Cena, but they didn't SHOW us. If their intent was to make this the "worst year of Cena's life" it only makes sense that he loses to Rock, loses to Brock, and generally doesn't win any big matches. Hell they love losing streak gimmicks, if anyone could survive the losing streak gimmick it's Cena. Push it like the loss to Rock is affecting his mind. Brock kicks his ass and he doesn't think he can hang anymore. He gets obsessed with beating Rock so he overlooks his other opponents, his personal life suffers and he undergoes a divorce, he ends the year by being betrayed by AJ and losing to Dolph. Then start the redemption story at the Royal Rumble. He realizes he needs to focus on the here and now not on some mythical match with Rock he won't get until he focuses on present and wins matches.

    ReplyDelete
  83. But if Vince was so pissed at Heyman and Punk for cheating, why is Maddox now allowed to work as Vickie's assistant? What is "Shield's" motivation to keep interfering if not to help Punk anymore? Why isn't anybody worried about "Shield" intefering at "WM", costing Trips and/or Taker their match?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Isn't Caesaro liked backstage as well? Isn't working out well for him...

And seriously, who did he and the rhodes scholars piss off?

    ReplyDelete
  85. The other day you said something was dumbest thing you read on the blog.

    Holy shit, that is terrible.

    You can not be serious.

    ReplyDelete
  86. the word they are lookin for is "tall"

    ReplyDelete
  87. Big Show, Sheamus, and Orton are way bigger names than those 3.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I wonder how much those Spears were contributing to his neck problems. Every time he did it, he was basically giving himself a DDT.

    ReplyDelete
  89. They still really haven't given Dolph the superkick yet. Number one reason is probably Shawn.

    ReplyDelete
  90. How is that a terrible idea? It's the WHC, it means jack shit anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Nexus was too big. Too many guys in that stable weren't ready. Brilliant idea, but they had the wrong guys.

    ReplyDelete
  92. It's just how they book upper mid card heels. Fortunately for the Shield, they skipped right past that stage and went straight to the main event.

    ReplyDelete
  93. And putting it on 3 people will help it?

Now if you have said freebird the tag belts, fine. great. awesome even.

Freebirding a "world" title?... IMO they should only be one World champ.

But doing a freebird deal, is just terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Tarver wasn't ready. The rest were ready. They all couldnt be main event.

They were banking on 3 guys

    Barrett/Bryan/Ryback

Ryback got injured, Bryan got "fired."

    It was fucked from there.

Gabriel and the redhead kid could have formed a tag team.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Shield has to lose as some point.

I agree Reigns and Ambrose are the breakouts.

But I dont see a WM5 "The SHIELD EXPLODES" situation.

I see it limping to the end like all WWE factions/stables...

    ReplyDelete
  96. We already have more than one World champ. Playing it as Shield holding the title hostage and not telling the number one contender who will be defending it until show time is a great angle. Plus you can get a million different matchups and it's a great breakup angle when one of them finally loses it.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Tarver was one of the guys who I didn't have a problem with, all he had to do in a stable was look menacing and KO people, and he could do that.

Darren Young, Slater, and Otunga shouldn't have been on the roster, and outside of Barrett and Bryan, none of them could handle the main event yet.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Reigns has the best spear in the company. All other spears need to be retired, because Reigns just owns it.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Again, they all werent gonna be main event level talents.

Young can work. Had they reformed the South Beach Boys with Percy Watson, they were a good tag. The PTPs are aweseom, but thats due to Titus. But Percy Watson is just as charismatic.

I totally forgot about Otunga. Yeah, he's terrible.

But obviously the heavy lifting of the angle was gonna be from Ryback/Bryan/Barrett in the ring. The rest was filler.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I know all them weren't going to be main event guys, but the problem was pushing them all like they were going to be.

    ReplyDelete
  101. They pushed the group as a main event threat.

If it ever had got REAL LEGS (or booked by non WWF people) the heirarchy would have been firmly established i believe.

    Barrett- leader/mouthpiece
    Bryan- workhorse
    RYback- Enforcer
    Otunga- Starscream
Gabriel- pretty boy to split off
    Slater/Tarver/Young- jobbers/Tags/jobber tags

    ReplyDelete
  102. Yea, im not buying it.

Plus their breakup angle shouldnt be over a "top level" belt. Cuz Reigns is green. Ambrose/Rollins will work circles around him, and Ambrose will bury him on the mic.

And thats not what you want in your next breakout guy being so exposed.

Look what happened to Ryback once thrusted in the main. All his weaknesses were exposed. The losses never helped either.

but agree to disagree. IMO, thats terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Can i get a Youtube clip, cuz everybody is going nuts for it.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Wrestling is a work, they wouldn't let Ambrose and Rollins work circles around him or bury him on the mic. And I wouldn't classify Reigns as green, he has more than held his own in the ring so far.

    ReplyDelete
  105. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4415QDNC5Mg

Have you seen any of the Shield's matches so far?

    ReplyDelete
  106. I know wrestling is a work and i also know wrestling is hyper-competitive.

You think three guys are gonna work together to honestly make each other. NOT TO MENTION, three guys thrusted into the main event as singles is gonna rub the top guys the wrong way, cuz thats three guys they have to compete with as well.

    That's just not gonna work.

    ReplyDelete
  107. The Shield EXPLODES!!! Reigns vs Ambrose vs Rollins from FCW

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDel3yUXK-w

    ReplyDelete
  108. No i have not.

I have however seen them in FCW, ROH, and that west indy Moxley was the champ of for like ever...

    ReplyDelete
  109. This ain't the territory days where everybody is trying to stab you in the back. You ever notice we rarely hear those types of stories anymore?

    ReplyDelete
  110. Meh saw the clip... its ok. Better than that running hug Edge used to do. OR that shit tackle Dave did.

    Nothing on Goldbergs though

    ReplyDelete
  111. TLC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dond9mYiW3s

    Elimination Chamber: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e17RiMwThNc

Do yourself a favor and watch those two matches now. 2 matches in and their avg star rating is 4 and half.

    ReplyDelete
  112. This isnt the territory days, but you honestly believe that the established guys are gonna welcome three new guys to the main event with open arms? Guys who are unproved in the WWE, some with fanfare, some green as good weed. Just extend those arms and say yeah..,. "share my spot... It only took me 10 years to get... You been here for a cup of coffee, have at it."

    This is wrestling.

It must be lovely in Viking Space Lord world.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Only guys that fit that description are Orton, Cena, and Punk. I highly doubt they'll be trying to hold Shield down.

    ReplyDelete
  114. ill put it on my to do list.

  116. Skip sucked in NXT.

Firing Bryan killed them. They lost the worker. And a stable of seven generic WWE wrestlers (okay, Gabriel stands out, but he's too Japanese) is not going to cut it.

At the end of the day, if the wrestling sucks, it's just not going to work.

    ReplyDelete
  117. That doesn't surprise me at all.

Think of all the great writers of all time. How many of them were charismatic, all-eyes-on-me type of people?

There are creators and there are performers, a rare few are both, but most stick to one.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Wooo, Fuj put me over, that means...oh wait, it means dick.

    ReplyDelete
  119. The Shield are interfering cause they're heels and they like being feared and respected and hurting people. Hence Rollins promo about everybody in the back being scared of them.

    ReplyDelete
  120. That's why I say they break up amicably. Push them individually with the credibility from their time in The Shield, and if you ever need a dominant heel trio, reform them.

If you can't think of a good resolution for an angle, wait until you do. And honestly, I really don't think there's that much money in 6-man tags, considering the Shield has beaten every single top babyface in the company. Shelve the gimmick until you need it. Or if their singles career flop, reform them and turn them into goons for a bit.

Not everything needs to be resolved at all times. Build for the future.

  121. Owen Hart would've been a main eventer if they let him beat Shawn, even if for only a week, back in late 1997. But that only works if he snaps, goes heel, and you get an Austin - Hart feud... which wouldn't have happened, sadly. I don't think Austin hated Hart as such, but I think he had reservations about putting his neck further at risk.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Reigns is being booked ala Rhyno - not the biggest, not the strongest, but an absolute wrecking machine.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Flattery will get you nowhere...

  124. Every stable needs a Starscream.

    ReplyDelete
  125. what's the point of signing Elgin generico if you're just going to take the mask off him?!

    ReplyDelete
  126. Agreed. In The Rockers, you could tell when watching them that Shawn was going to be a bigger breakout star than Marty. With Legacy, you could tell that Cody was more ready for the next step than Dibiase was.
With the Shield, I'm confident that all of them have a future. However, of the three, I would say that Rollins ends up being the biggest star. It has nothing to do with him being the "best worker" (I'm not sure he is; I think they're all very good), but I do think he connects with the camera the best of the three. Reigns obviously has the size, and thus far (I think) has been the best at establishing an in-ring (i.e. character mid-match) character that is constantly connecting and interacting with the audience, but he hasn't been as strong on the microphone as Rollins. Ambose has the most defined

    ReplyDelete
  127. ...most defined character of the three, but I think he's still finding a way to make that character connect with the crowd he's performing in front of.

I know everyone has Ambrose pegged as the breakout, but I remember "everyone" had Dibiase Jr. pegged as the breakout too, and you could just tell that wasn't going to be the case. Of course, it's kind of a split of hairs in this case, because all of three of these guys are going to be very, very successful. At this point, I think we're just betting on who gets there first.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I see Rollins turning face after the Shield and maybe starting a blowjob tag team with Justin Gabriel or Tyson Kidd. Probably the best bet for him getting over right now.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Besides the spear he's got a cool spinning bulldog thing he used as a finish in FCW. He's actually pretty talented, all things considered. I still think Ambrose is the star of the three, because he has that intangible heel quality. A lot of people want to say he won't get it for being an "indie" guy but he wrestles in a very straightforward style that will work well in WWE, and he's not small or anything.

    ReplyDelete
  130. No wonder they're supposedly getting positive attention from the brass at WWE, and from the IWC. They all have strong positive attributes unique to each of them, and they still have plenty of potential to improve on top of that. Most importantly, they can immediately become a main event-level threat and nobody would doubt it. It's the best stable WWE's had in years - I'd go so far to say that they'll end up being the best one they've had since DX once all is said and done.

Think about this: When Evolution was formed, Batista and Orton were these green guys who were obviously going to be groomed for greatness. The Legacy was two (well, three) green guys who had the family connections and looks, and merely needed the time and energy to develop into something more than just a name (Cody's now established as something separate from his father and brother, for instance).

In The Shield's DEBUT MATCH, they came across as EQUALS. Call it luck, call it good booking, it doesn't matter because they're the hottest act this side of CM Punk in the company.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Wait wait wait wait wait.... Fuj was watching indies?

    ReplyDelete
  132. By today's standards Reigns is big. In today's post-wellness era most of the guys are in the 200-230 pound range, so someone whose 250-270 pounds comes off as big. In the 80's and 90's his size wouldn't stand out but today he's considered big.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Nah, he should just blow it off... there is a PPV the next month he has to start building to!

    ReplyDelete
  134. *BUS-TED*

lol... Seriously, once i find out (insert indy goof name here) is going to WWE/TNA, ill do three things

    1. youtube indy goof's top ten moves viz suicidal dragon... if they are good moves...

    2. youtube indy goofs promos. if they are passable.
    3. Ill watch some matches. Then I make an informed decision.

So yes, I watch indy wrestling... if need be.

    Im so ashamed...

    ReplyDelete
  135. I'll disagree... in the early stages of the Rockers Marty got the majority of the mic time and he was the guy getting the hot tags. Shawn was Ricky Morton like. It wasnt until like 90-91 when HBK started to break out.

And you must have not been on this board in 09 when the vast majority of this blog was DICK eating Ted. Jr as the breakout of Legacy.

There was a small contingent. Charlie Reneke and myself saying that Ted Jr sucks ass.

I also went on record to say that Cody Rhodes reminds me of a young Tully Blanchard.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Definitely, Wrestling business got smaller since the 90s.

    ReplyDelete
  137. ONE OF US! ONE OF US! Freals though, Suicidal Dragon's vids are awesome for getting the feel of a guy. Chainsawproof99 has some good ones too.

  138. Japanese? Justin Gabriel hails from Cape Town, South Africa. That's not even in Asia! Let along close to Japan! Kayfab

    ReplyDelete
  139. It was all part of Bully Ray's plan.

    ReplyDelete
  140. That could work if Rock beats Cena again this year, which wont happen.

All in all I see all 3 having a promising future.

Ambrose and Reigns work great as heel, but I definitely see Rollins getting time as a midcard face down the road

    ReplyDelete
  141. I'm convinced they only signed him just so all the indy companies can't use him. A name like that is a sure sign of a jobber 4 life.

    ReplyDelete
  142. I would put that with the whole Brad Maddox thing too though. Whether or not they intended to make it look like The Shield was in cahoots with Heyman and Punk, like Brad Maddox there is no reason for them to have been interfering on Punks behalf unless being paid off by Heyman.

How WWE hasent figured to link Punk/Heyman/Lesnar/Maddox/Shield together as almost a new version of Heymans Dangerous Alliance makes no sense. While he has been busy dealing with Cena and then HHH, why has Lesnar had basically no screen time with Punk?

    ReplyDelete
  143. Huh. I'd rather not imagine who, in this situation, it was that Bully screwed.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Laugh at my response, but I think Kaitlyn has the best "spear" in the company. Hell, even historically, probably only second to Goldberg's.

    ReplyDelete
  145. If you count the match the night after Chamber with Ryback, Sheamus, and Jericho, the average is still about 4.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Yeah, but they're all in that "upper-midcard" limbo right now, where wins and losses don't really mean anything. I feel like there isn't anything really at stake in the match.

Conversely, if it were Jericho-Booker-JBL, I think there could be a really good storyline there, with Booker (the authority figure on "SD") finally having enough of "Shield's" stunts, and recruiting two long-time veterans to help teach those young punks a thing or two about respect. The young guys want to put the veterans out to pasture, the old guys want to show they still have it, and I think there would be more interest from the crowd.

I also think it frees up Show, Sheamus, and Orton for something more meaningful. I'd be all for multi-man match for the World Title - ADR, Show, Sheamus, and Orton? A little better than ADR/Swagger, I'd say.

    ReplyDelete
  147. I think Ambrose could be the next Austin and Rollins the next CM Punk. With Reigns I don't know. He is big compared to Ambrose and Rollins, but compared to Sheamus or Batista or Kane or Orton... not so much.

They should stay together as long as it works. Maybe they should get a fourth member. Cena would be great. What if Shield helps him to get the World Title against Rock? Epic Moment! But maybe it is Big Show who betrays Orton and Sheamus... who knows. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  148. I was talking about his wrestling style. Hence the point of generic wrestlers.

    ReplyDelete
  149. I guess? I'd prefer something like Bryan/Rollins, have a contrast in style, y'know? Get a grappler and a high-flier, or maybe a hoss and Rollins.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Edge was taller than Batista.

    It's not about height.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Which gets a major thumbs up from me.

Better for matches, better for the wrestlers.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Scott will push you one of these days.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Why the hell would you have three of your most dominant heels sell for a bunch of old men?

Unless you just wanna see 3 vets get butchered, but none of them are over enough as babyfaces for that to work, IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  154. There is probably a reason for having no Lesnar/Punk interaction. It's too obvious.

    We'll probably find out post-Mania.

    ReplyDelete
  155. I'd like to see Jericho be the only one for his side that can still "go" like a full-time star could - Booker and JBL can get a handful of hope-spots in, but they shouldn't be dominating for any long period of time. One of the heels dominates Booker and JBL a bit, a desperation Axe Kick or Clothesline From Hell breaks up the beating, but then the heel bounces right back, shutting down the face's attempt at a comeback.

It just seems right to me to have "Shield" beat the three of them in a relatively short time. Like, under ten minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  156. But if they've been helping Punk (or Heyman), shouldn't Vince/Vickie/Booker be worried that the pattern could and would continue? Make it that if "Shield" interferes on behalf of Punk or Brock, then Punk or Brock are immediately fired.

But, nope, Vince was just worried about them interfering that one time, I'm sure they've learned their lesson in the six weeks between PPVs. Logically, it makes no sense.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Because if it hasn't been said on TV then it hasn't happened?

Punk was outed as behind the attacks, he used them one last time and it bit him in the ass.

I'm not saying an acknowledgement wouldn't be nice, but the story is hardly incomplete.

    ReplyDelete
  158. JBL is still mostly a heel, Jericho doesn't matter and the last time Booker gave somebody a rub...they turned out to be Cody Rhodes.

I agree that the Shield should slaughter them. But after beating the top stars in the company...isn't butchering "legends" both cliche and counterproductive? You generally get the heat on heels before the money match.

It's like if Sid beat Shawn...then next week he killed Jose Lothario in a match.

IMO the Shield should break-up because I don't think they can put anybody over at the moment, and the longer they stay around, the greater the chance they job to Cena in a handicap match on Raw.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Hahaha...same here, but I stop after suicidal dragon's clips, because I know 95% of the moveset will change. Plus, out of every top ten moves list, it's always three moves with 3-4 contrived variations of each move.

"I do this one with my *eyes closed* and cross my middle and ring fingers!!"

    ReplyDelete
  160. Too late for this. Once they go over the likes of Cena/Sheamus/Ryback, what's the point of facing two retired wrestlers and one winding down his career?

I don't see how Orton/Sheamus/Big Show are supposed to be a challenge, either.

    ReplyDelete
  161. What does everyone think of the rumors that Randy Orton is going to be revealed as the leader of the Shield at Wrestlemania?

    ReplyDelete
  162. Shield have said repeatedly they don't have leader. Completely unnecessary to have one, besides, how do they ret-con them attacking Orton so many times?

It's not like there is a higher purpose and they have a need to explain Orton taking one for the team like they did with Bully Ray.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Awful idea - it'd be a complete waste to take three hot new commodities (that are OVER), and use them solely to get Orton another undeserved push.

    ReplyDelete
  165. I'd imagine (and hope) that the reason we haven't gotten any interaction between Punk and Lesnar is that they're purposely saving it for later. "Summerslam", maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  166. I'd still like to see the match, but I agree that they pretty much went too far, too soon - they've had all of THREE matches so far, and they've beaten pretty much all the top stars already. Unless they were facing Taker and Trips (and a third huge guy, like Rock), it seems like there's not much more that can be done with the team.

I do still think that there's something to be said for them beating the old-timers, though - sure, it's cliche', but it also happens to be happening on the biggest stage of all, not just some random episode of "Raw". The "casual" fans would definitely get the impression that these new guys should be watched.

    ReplyDelete
  167. It's possible that I'm just jaded - there may be more to the story, sure, but experience tells me that this is just another convoluted dropped angle. Happens about 90% of the time.

Plus, with only two more weeks until "WM", it would seem that the issue should have been addressed by now.

    ReplyDelete
  168. Plus, those wins haven't really meant anything - so far, after three big wins in three big matches, NOTHING has changed for them. They aren't going after any particular person to create a real feud/rivalry, they aren't targeting any titles, they haven't given us a single clue as to what they actually stand for or why they're here... big wins don't mean anything if they're not followed up on.

    ReplyDelete
  169. 100% agree, Kyle - they keep talking about how this has been the worst year of his career, but he's won just as many big matches as he's lost.

This is the time where Cena should be talking about how he lost to Rock, LOST to Brock, LOST (cleanly) to Punk, LOST (cleanly) to Ziggler, lost to "The Shield", lost to friggin' TENSAI... but half that stuff didn't happen, and the other half only happened due to outside interference or other technicalities (like his double-pin with Punk).

    ReplyDelete
  170. They could be saving it for the pre-Mania Raw. A last-ditch surprise.

Like a "OH SHIT! Punk has that in the bag!" thing.

    ReplyDelete
  171. Go all out with. Do a gauntlet match with like...twenty legends. Have them powerbomb every single vet in a row.

    ReplyDelete
  172. John Cena is a shill man, nothing more, nothing less.

He doesn't know what story telling is.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Well, they were tag team champs...

    ReplyDelete
  174. Except the World Title isn't a main event spot.

  175. Finally saw the TLC six-man and it fucking rocks. These guys need to get push to the moon
