Hall Fundraiser - Your reaction

Hi Scott,

What are your feelings on the fans funding Scott Hall's hip replacement, etc?
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1571585-ddp-and-fans-succeed-in-raising-funds-for-scott-hall

I get that they want the guy to see that people care about him, but I find it wrong that they are asking fans (many likely economically challenged) to pitch in and help a guy who was a millionaire AND has superstar buddies that could easily front the $80,000. His friends could have helped with the bill and fans could have still shown Hall support and encouragement through Twitter. I don't know, it just feels wrong that Nash, Michaels, DDP, or even HHH could have helped him with the medical bills but didn't and the fans had to step in. C.M. Punk was nice enough to help out Joey Mercury when he needed it--it kept private until his dvd.. What are your thoughts on this one?

Best,  Anthony Viggiani, NY, NY

Yeah, kind of weird that Hall hangs with millionaires, like people with literally too much money to spend in one lifetime, but has to resort to this for his operation.  Maybe it's part of DDP's plan to make him appreciate his life or something?  Plus it feels like he hasn't really earned another chance yet.  The sad thing is that Hall has an awesome mind for the business, and could probably be a huge asset to the writing geeks in WWE if HHH brought him in as an agent or producer or whatever they call it now.  Ditto for Jake Roberts, and hopefully that's the path he ends up going down if DDP really can set the ship straight with him.

  1. Thing is, his millionaire friends have already been down this road. He's done the rehab thing and it hasn't helped. DDP's actually trying to help him physically and mentally, and it looks like Hall finally wants to clean up. I've met DDP in his post-wrestling life. He just genuinely wants to help people. Hope he can help Scott Hall.

Did I donate? No. I want proof he's dedicated to cleaning up. I've been burned before.

  2. My thoughts as well. All his friends have been burned, WWE has been burned. They've probably all decided to stop wasting money on a lost cause.

And really, it's not like fans are just giving Hall the money; DDP is collecting it and I think he's done enough to earn the benefit of the doubt. Not only that, but donators get something for their money beyond Hall's health. There's t-shirts, autographed pictures, DVDs, phone and Skype calls, etc.

  3. Yeah, I think helping Hall financially is really odd as well, considering that a lot of people said that despite his personal faults, he's actually been quite responsible with his investments and such.

I know people are clamoring for Jake or Hall to become backstage gurus but would they really make a difference? I mean, guys like Arn Anderson, Dean Malenko and Ricky Steamboat are agents and were known as good to great workers...yet the in-ring product is pretty stale for the most part. Who's to say Hall and Jake would be utilized well in terms of the creative element?

Actually, I think, for their health and future lifestyles, DDP should be stressing to Jake and Hall to stay away from wrestling. Too much temptation on the road, despite what the Wellness Policy had done for the company.

  4. Honestly, not to sound like a damn spokesmen for it, but if you haven't tried DDPYoga, give it a shot. It's probably the best workout I've ever done. Much better than when I used to run 15 miles in the blazing heat/freezing cold every day.

  5. It would probably mean more to him that 8000 people donated 10 bucks, than one of his friends with 10 mill just gave it to him. I know it would mean more to me. I'm sure if this had failed, somebody would've ponied up the cash.

  6. You may find the in-ring product "stale" but if you don't see a huge
difference in workrate now vs. 15-20 years ago, I don't know what to
tell you. Just look at when people do the "average star rating"
compilations for PPV's/Wrestlemanias what have you, almost all the top
rankings are from the last 10 years or so.

  7. So you're saying that the addition of guys like Arn, Dean and Ricky have resulted in better wrestling now than in 1997/98 (15 years ago)? Are you sure about that?

  8. I'm actually considering it! Self-High Five!

  9. I've been doing it and I agree. It's been much better for me than P-90X or when I was running 5 miles a night. I've really been enjoying it and feel like I'm in better overall shape than I've ever been.

  10. I donated to this and to Jake Roberts's surgery.

I always consider myself privileged I work a Hell of a lot, but I'm fortunate enough to have a well paying job and interests I'm able to monetize. I don't mind breaking off a few dollars to someone making a genuine attempt at fixing their life. I also have experience with recovering addicts and there's a difference between when they're trying to scam a few dollars out of you and when they're trying to turn things around. But no matter, I'd rather be a sucker who's helped a few too many people rather than not helping enough people.

I don't think there's anything wrong with not helping, but I do think it's better to help if you can. If someone is economically challenged, I don't think anyone's expecting you to help out a person who made millions and pissed it all away. I always think stuff like this is more for when you're enjoying economic good times.

  11. You know what is a scary thought? It's probably safer to donate to Scott Hall than it is to lend Ric Flair money.

  12. Considering I'm a step away from being homeless, I must say I envy the hell out of you. Glad to know though that you are using your blessing to help someone in need...world needs more people like you/

    ReplyDelete
  13. But Flair will regail you about the time he fell of his boat with Ricky Morton! Totally worth the $3,400 tab.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'd rather donate to Hall, having him fall off the wagon wasting my money, and then listen to him slur incoherent stories to me then hang with Flair.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Flair whips his dick out far too often. Hall wins, even if he feels up your grandma.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Dude, I've been there myself. Good economic times seem to be as much about luck as they are work ethic. I know you're going through some tough times, so I don't want to sound trite, but keep your head up.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Well, I made a promise to help others out if I ever am in the position to. And I do know things are rough all over.... I'm hardly alone.

    ReplyDelete
  18. And plus, you know is going to find some excuse to blade and bleed all over the place.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I don't honestly get why it's an issue. It's a Kickstarter type thing. People aren't donating money just to donate money, which might be shaky with Hall's background, they're getting stuff for it. As long as Hall/DDP/Jake/whoever come through with the rewards (stuff like signed pictures or a Skype call with Hall or something like that), then what's the problem?

And as others have mentioned, the millionaire friends have been down this road before. And to be honest, maybe it would help keep Hall clean if he feels like he owes a bunch of people as opposed to one or two buddies.

  20. as said so many times before: DDP = awesome.

  21. I was thinking about your situation in a general sense. I don't know your particulars, but when I was financially strapped, I had to move in with some friends for a while until I got on my feet. It's incredibly humbling to ask for help, but it makes the good times that much better. The friends who took me in have had more downs than ups lately, so I've been helping them out where I can.

The economy has been in bad shape for a long time. I get upset when people want to blame one president or one political party because it's not about that. I know my teacher friends have been having a hard time finding full-time employment for a long time. It's a cliche, but you're not alone. All we can do is help each other where we can.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Keep at it man. I've been in some pretty tough spots before.

I've had times that I only ate by the grace of good friends for several months.

I've literally spent time homeless and sleeping on park benches and on buses. Not for any extended periods, but short periods between places to crash.

    It'll get better.

  23. I don't worry about myself so much as my little girl. If it was just me I wouldn't care

    ReplyDelete
  24. Totally.

We're not talking main-events, we're talking up and down the card. Are you going to compare a Harris Brothers match to Dolph/Bryan?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Dude, you just picked the worst guys against the best guys. I could counter with Otunga, Darren Young, Great Khali, Ryback, etc.

1997 in WWF had Owen, Bret, Shawn, British Bulldog, Austin, Vader, Taker in the upper card. Guys like Taka, Sasuke, Furnas and LaFon as well. And a much limited roster than WWE has now.

WCW in 1997? Benoit, Jericho, Guerrero, Rey, Juvie, etc. Say what you want about WCW and their booking but when they allowed good workers to wrestle each other, they let them go all out. WCW Saturday Night had more actual wrestling on one show than RAW seems to have all year.

And if you look at both companies back then, they had brawling, technical, high-flying and other styles that had origins in other countries whereas WWE matches are generally all the same (with some few exceptions). The era from 1996 to about 2001/2 had some of the most exciting wrestling I've ever seen from an in-ring standpoint.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Darren Young isn't that bad. And Otunga and Khali don't wrestle.

And at least now the matches have finishes. PG WWE>Crash TV.

  27. I wonder: if Scott gets better( I hope so), will The Outsiders go in the Hall of Fame in 2014? I'd be surprised if they didn't sooner rather than later.

  28. its like 140 bucks.
