The SmarK RAW Rant–03.18.13

The SmarK RAW Rant – 03.18.13

Live from Pittsburgh, PA

Your hosts are Michael Cole & Jerry Lawler

John Cena is out to talk about how focused on Wrestlemania he is, but the Primetime Players interrupt, and tonight the part of Titus O’Neil is being played by Rufus “Pancake” Patterson, which in itself sounds like a name some poor geek in developmental would get. Cena is so amused by Titus’ stupid act that he lets them continue, and “Rufus” points out that his nephew Darren looks like John Cena, so therefore he should be on the cover of Cocoa Pebbles. And Cena has had enough and challenges Young RIGHT NOW. Well at least it’s better than this insipid promo. Seriously, Rufus Patterson?

John Cena v. Darren Young

Young runs away immediately and we take a break, and return with Cena pointing at the sign and finishing Young at 3:50. Literally 30 seconds of that “match” was actually aired.

David Otunga v. Ryback

I have to say, the one time where they’d be totally justified in crowing about their movie’s success and they totally have Michael Cole underplay it and then squash Otunga. I have no idea how their mindset works. So yeah, Ryback gets a couple of spinebusters and finishes with the usual at 1:30. So this brings out Mark Henry, along with Teddy Long and Vickie, who takes Ryback out of the six-man at Wrestlemania and books him against Henry instead. See, that’s exactly why the GM concept is so useless now: Instead of Ryback challenging Henry because he’s a MAN and he’s PISSED OFF, we have to get Vickie to book the match on his behalf.

And then they do a video drop-in for Brock-HHH, but Lawler’s music plays for some reason. This is gonna be one of those shows…

Fandango premieres…next!

Fandango v. Great Khali

The show continues dying before it even gets started, as Fandango gets an elaborate dance-hall themed entrance and pyro, and then runs away from Khali. This has gone past “tiresome” and into its own universe of suck.

R-Truth v. Damien Sandow

Sandow attacks and drops a knee for two, then cuts off a comeback with a clothesline and follows with a snap suplex for two. Knees into a legsweep sets up the ELBOW OF DISDAIN, which gets two. Truth makes the comeback and gets the leg lariat and axe kick while Cole & Lawler engage in some of the most idiotic commentary, and then Sandow walks out of the match at 3:40. Holy god is this a terrible show tonight. ½*

Meanwhile, Kaitlyn breaks up with Cody Rhodes after their whirlwind one week romance, or something.

Undertaker is out and he wants the urn back, but Punk answers on the Titantron doing his Paul Bearer impression and juggling the urn. Anyone who thinks that Punk has any kind of a chance after all this, I don’t know what to tell you. But either way, this feud is just not clicking.

Kane & Daniel Bryan v. Primo & Epico

The champs take turns on Primo, as Bryan throws the kicks in the corner for two before Epico comes in. He hits Bryan with a knee to the back from behind for two, and the Colons take over with double-teams. Epico with the surfboard and a clothesline for two, and he goes to the chinlock as this match may be the most boring thing ever. Not even just wrestling matches, but life in general. Finally, it’s hot tag Kane and he goes up with the flying clothesline, but AJ interrupts and skips around the ring. Kane chokeslams and pins a Colon at 6:05 anyway. *

Meanwhile, it’s the epic confrontation we’ve all been awaiting for Wrestlemania: Chris Jericho meets Fandango! Jericho came back for THIS?

Alberto Del Rio v. Cody Rhodes

Del Rio has newer, babyface-ier music that still doesn’t get him over worth a damn. Cody actually gets some offense for once, dropping a knee in the corner before walking into a faceplant and low kick that gets two for ADR. Cody with a suplex for two and he dodges a charging Del Rio. ADR comes back and dropkicks Cody off the apron as we take a break. Back with Cody stomping Del Rio down and hitting a front suplex for two. Cody works on the knee, but Del Rio blocks a superplex and both guys are out. Del Rio with the head kick for two, but Cody comes back with a moonsault press for two. Cole here notes that Del Rio is setting up for his “patented” move, the “cross-armbreaker”. Isn’t that like someone doing a “patented” move they call the bodyslam? And Del Rio gets his patented move for the submission at 13:24. That was a lot of match for not a lot of result. ** Jack Swagger comes out for the attack afterwards and breaks Ricardo’s ankle, but he’s still not over.

Booker T gets inducted into the Hall of Fame. Even with two strikes? What if he fails a piss test before the ceremony?

Randy Orton & Sheamus v. 3MB

The babyfaces work Drew over to start and Sheamus slingshots in for two. Sheamus gets distracted by Jinder and Slater takes over in the corner, setting up a big boot from Drew for two. Slater with a superkick for two, but Sheamus makes the hot tag and Orton finishes Heath with an RKO at 3:44. * The Shield tries to attack, but Big Show runs out to even things up.

Kofi Kingston v. Dolph Ziggler

Dolph works a headlock, but Kofi comes back with an elbow and goes up, only to fall down as Ziggler takes over. Kofi comes back with a springboard splash for two and the boomdrop, but Dolph bails. Big E gets his cheapshot on Kofi and the Zig Zag finishes at 4:31. The winning streak continues! ** Afterwards, Team Hell No challenges Team Biggler to a tag title match at Wrestlemania.

Intercontinental title: Wade Barrett v. The Miz v. Chris Jericho

Jericho cleans house to start and hits Barrett with a dropkick in the ring for two. Miz sneaks in with a sunset flip for two and follows with the corner clothesline, but goes up and gets pounded. Barrett tries a superplex, but Jericho brings them down with a tower of doom spot and we take a break. Back with Barrett chinlocking Jericho, who comes back with a bodypress for two. Miz pulls Jericho out of the ring, but walks into the bossman slam, which gets two. Miz with the figure-four, but Jericho lionsaults him for two. He dumps Miz and puts Barrett into the Walls, but Miz saves, so Jericho rolls him up for two. Codebreaker, but Barrett steals the two count on Miz. Jericho gets rid of Barrett and gets two on Miz again, but Miz gets the DDT for two. Jericho gets rid of Barrett again, but walks into a big boot from Miz that gets two. Jericho with a small package for two, but the SKF follows, and Barrett gets the cheap rollup on Miz to retain at 13:18. This was the one-man show from Jericho, who gets bumped down to putting Fandango over as a reward. ***1/4

Main Event Contract Signing: HHH has his showdown with Paul Heyman, who names some stipulations that will not be in the mix, like “winner gets Stephanie”. This is enough to prompt an attack from the COO and somehow this gets even more boring, and even Brock’s appearance can’t save the segment. It’s CHAIR v. SLEDGEHAMMER, but Brock backs off and Heyman reveals the stipulation: NO HOLDS BARRED. Wow, just like every other Wrestlemania main match in the last 20 years or so. There was literally no reaction to this. Also, HHH’s career is on the line. There was literally even less reaction to that. So yeah, he’s coming out of retirement to put his career on the line! Oh my god, what if he loses? He might never not wrestle again!

The Pulse

I may have to revise my official prediction of this Wrestlemania breaking the 1.24 million buy record. Maybe they’ll just keep playing that same Cena-Rock video every week until it hits 700,000, I dunno.

Comments

  1. Well someone was a bit grumpy while writing the review.

The U.S.A. chant was pretty loud so I don't know exactly what that means. But Swagger is certainly getting a reaction...of sorts.

Ziggler/Kofi was not a bad match. And I thought the punk stuff was OK. though I seem to be the lone person who didn't like the Paul impression.

Triple Threat at the end and I'm ok with Fandango playing the role of Goldust.

It just took a little while to get to the good bits because 3 hours. But that's what basketball is for.

    ReplyDelete
  2. That raw was terrible

    ReplyDelete
  3. I enjoyed the Heyman/HHH segment, but I think that's in part because I hadn't watched all three hours of Raw. Turned it on when I got in from work, halfway through the triple threat match.

    ReplyDelete
  4. One awful Raw. One of the worst I can recall.

    ReplyDelete
  5. That 6 digit buyrate is going to taste so sweet. Rock should be down on his knees thanking Brock Lesnar, because without him, WM would be even a bigger flop.

    ReplyDelete
  6. As far as main event builds this has to be one of the weakest ones in years. Rock's not on Raw half the time, the extent of Cena's hype is occasionally going into serious mode, Punk has basically passed into cartoonishly evil territory, and Brock/HHH is based around a match type that more or less happened at Summerslam with a retirement stipulation given to someone who's already in semi-retirement.

But hey, at least Big E. Langston made the card

    ReplyDelete
  7. I think Marty DiBergi said it best from This is Spinal Tap: The review for "Shark Sandwich" was merely a two word review which simply read "Shit Sandwich". The same thing could be said about the current WWE product.

    ReplyDelete
  8. A USA chant for a MEXICAN. It would be like Liger getting a USA chant. Horrible segment. I am not being a racist, its just that chant should be saved for the JIm Duggan's of the world. And the heel behind these chants? Its the "Real American" Jack Swagger. From Perry Oklahoma. With Dutch Mantel as his mouthpiece. It is just an awful angle that Vinnie Mac is perpetuating. LONG LIVE VINCENT KENNEDY MCMAHON!

    ReplyDelete
  9. MY BLOWJOB WAS SOOOO MUCH BETTER THEN THIS SHOW

    ReplyDelete
  10. What ever happened to CM Punk's anger at asskissers who worked part time schedules getting sweet Wrestlemania spots? Remember how that got channeled into promos that got his matches over? Just wondering.....

    ReplyDelete
  11. To cheer you up from the BoDer's from that 3 hour crapfest, I present to you Korean Robocop with Back to the Future III theme music!

  12. RAW has been on such a run of suck, I'm literally embarrassed to be watching RAW right now. Like if my mom called me tonight to see what I was up to, this is how it would go down:

Mom: "Hey bud, you watching your wrestling tonight?"

My brain: "Don't tell her you were watching RAW....but what else would be on tonight?!"

Me: "It's a pornography show! I was watching pornography!"

    ReplyDelete
  13. How did that PEE IN HER BUTT sign stick around for so long?

    ReplyDelete
  14. TheRealCitizenSnipsMarch 18, 2013 at 10:38 PM

I'm watching the opening segment and honestly, the Prime Time Players are drawing about as much heat as they probably could ever hope to and I'm thinking "Well, whatever criticisms you can rightfully lay at John Cena's doorstep, he can consistently be a good foil for getting some kind of reaction out of the crowd for whoever he's facing." And by the time I finished the thought Darren Young had been squashed.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Does anyone have an explanation for why the clip from Main Event showed Swagger taking out Del Rio's left knee but his right knee was bandaged and damaged tonight? I know WWE is stupid but they can't remember left and right?

I'm giving them too much credit aren't I?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I actually think Scott could have really gone off more about this show, but like me, and millions others, was too disappointed to espouse. This was a major show en route to Wrestlemania, and it really came off as badly booked, lacking chemistry, and actually hurt my desire to see the show.

    ReplyDelete
  17. This show is physically hurting me.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm off spending 70 for the show and just waiting for the blu ray at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Out of curiosity, how many people of S.O.L.when it comes to nearby bars showing WrestleMania?

Thank the Lawd I live in Knoxville, TN where every Buffalo Wild Wings within 40 miles is still willing to pay the staggering price to show it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Pretty much all bars/restaurants around here stopped showing wrestling PPVs a long time ago and only a small handful do the UFC shows. Luckily a BWW opened last year in town, where I go to get my MMA fix.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Stealing the urn and mocking Paul Bearer makes more sense from a storyline angle. Punk going after them at least shows that he knows where to hurt the Undertaker the most: his McGuffin and love for a man who betrayed him every chance he could get.

Plus, Punk seems to be having fun playing with the McGuffin as a prop and that is far more interesting, since Undertaker would be more likely to play along with Punk than if he did what you were suggesting. Undertaker seems willing to show ass on the mike over the urn then if he was being chided by Punk for what you are talking about. And Punk is doing a great job selling the urn as the McGuffin that it is, which is fun since Punk seems to be having a great time selling the urn as something worth stealing in order to hurt Undertaker

    ReplyDelete
  22. Save your money for 30 folks!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Knoxville~! I actually spent a week at the Days Inn in Alcoa last Summer. I enjoyed it.

    That's all.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Damn Caps Lock man, you got some haters!

    Who hates BJs

    ReplyDelete
  25. Kofi/Zigs have been wrestling since 09... they better not have a bad match at this point

    ReplyDelete
  26. I have a feeling a lot of us will be panicking about our buy-rate estimates leading up to this show from week to week lol

    ReplyDelete
  27. There should absolutely be 'Guess the Buyrate' blog pool and the closest dictates the next rant.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I wouldn't worry about the buyrate:

According to WWE's Facebook page: 3,392 enjoyed this episode, and 571 did not.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Sort of a self-selection bias though, isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  30. We have one! Well all but the reward for getting it right so far.

Feel free to add your own:

    Ian Austin in for 1.9m
Zanadude (a sarcastic or maybe not) 1.4m
    Scott Keith in for 1.3m

    Marsolo in for 1.25m
    JohnPetuka in for 1.21m

  31. Young runs away immediately and we take a break, and return with Cena pointing at the sign and finishing Young at 3:50. Literally 30 seconds of that “match” was actually aired.

    -------------

Deleted the show from my DVR the second I read that. Its obvious Vince thinks I want to watch promo's/commercials instead of wrestling.

    ReplyDelete
  32. have any of the wrestlers or on-air personalities actually called the impending pay per view "WrestleMania Twenty Nine" or are they all adhering to this arbitrary mandate of just calling it "WrestleMania" this year?

    ReplyDelete
  33. 1.07

And from the sounds of the build, it would be almost fitting if WM played out in the midst of a driving sleet-storm. Memorable, if nothing else.

    ReplyDelete
  34. When HHH said, "Call you monster," did anyone else immediately get audio-visions (Kansas!) of Brodus Clay's music?

"Somebody call muh monnster. Somebody call muh monnster..."

    ReplyDelete
  35. What a craptastic RAW. I'm glad I didn't go.

I'm not sure, but I think Punk absconded the urn. I'll have to check the crack commentary again. The same commentary that said, "del Rio calls this move the cross armbreaker."

He calls the move by its name. Seems legit.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I will go 1.17 million.

I will also guess the same number for the 8 PPV's totaled from Mania until the end of the year

    ReplyDelete
  37. that's probably an infallible method, actually. Nice.

    ReplyDelete
  38. - Throw-away tag title match
    - 6-man Shield vs "guys we gotta get on the card" match (and Sheamus has already done the 6-man/Shield deal before)
    - Henry vs. Ryback where Henry is being wasted
    - Punk/Undertaker (which has the most potential in terms of interest)
    - del Rio/Colter with Swagger pinch hitting for Colter
    - HHH/Brock where the stipulation gives away the ending
    - Rock/Cena in a rematch no one wanted for the chance to be champ that no one supports

This is really looking to be the most mundane WM in recent history.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I like how that one Tout guy said that HHH was gonna get the job done and everyone would be happy.

No, dude... HHH already did the job at Summerslam, and no one was happy then, either

    ReplyDelete
  40. There are still places here in Pgh where they show WWE PPV's but I absolutely cannot stand the clientele shouting at the screens, each other, and dressing up as their favorite wrestlers (including the 50+ guy who always has his hands bandaged with X's on them). I try not to go as often as possible.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Come up with an explanation and you'll win a No-Prize.

    ReplyDelete
  42. But what happens when she asks for a title, and you give her one, and she either says, "Oooh, your dad and I love to use that one to get in the mood" or "I auditioned for that one."

    ReplyDelete
  43. I've been watching Wrestling religiously since I was 4 years old, almost 26 years, and never, ever, have I had such little interest in a Wrestlemania as I do with this one!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Reminds me of an ep of Family Matters where Carl's wife caught him with powdered sugar from a doughnut on his nose, and when she called him on it, he was like, "no no, that's... cocaine!"

    ReplyDelete
  45. Booker T gets inducted into the Hall of Fame. Even with two strikes? What if he fails a piss test before the ceremony?

    That's obsolete.

(points if you get that; it is related to Booker T)

    ReplyDelete
  46. 1.03M only because HHH put his career on the line...

I know its already in the past , but Im surprised he didnt at least put his hair on the line in a match if he knew he was going to shave it off.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Can I get down for 1.22

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm sure the guy you gave it to was happy as well.

Sorry, you set yourself up for that..

    ReplyDelete
  49. As someone from Pittsburgh, I was embarrassed by the crowd at the start of the show for being so dead. As a wrestling fan, I was embarrassed for the crowd for having to suffer through such a bad night by the end of the show.

    ReplyDelete
  50. They could've gone a million different ways with the 'Taker/Punk angle. Like having Punk drop a pipe bomb on 'Taker, about the fact he was once great, but later in his career became one of the WWE's mere chosen champions, which is why he never stood a chance with him in 2009, but times are different. 'Taker then calls out Punk for his ramblings telling him to earn respect, if he wants it so badly, and prove he's not the guy he was years ago.

Or, they could've kept the BELT on him and did Title Streak vs. 'Mania Streak which practically books itself! Look, I'm not trying to be an ignorant smark here, I know I'm in the minority, but I don't think Cena/Rock need the belt to draw, and I really have no interest in seeing that match again.

And this feud isn't so much bad, as it is a letdown.

And Triple H putting his career on the line?? WHAT career?? What in-ring career has he really had in the last 2 years??? OH NO, we won't get to see HHH wrestle 2 or 3 times a year, booooo! Whatever.

    ReplyDelete
  51. That's got to leave a bad taste in his mouth......

    ReplyDelete
  52. I think if Fandango was giving his opponent the mic to pronounce his name, then beating them up and squashing them, it would all work a lot better.

    ReplyDelete
  53. May I add my viewpoint, just for a moment? Thank you.

DAMN FUCKING HELL! DOES THIS SHOW RUIN A FUCKING FEEL GOOD DAY OR WHAT? I'VE WRESTLED WITH FUCKING STOOL SAMPLES IN LESS TIME, AND FUCKING LAUGHED ABOUT IT!

Anyway, you all are awesome. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Actually not the first time they've done that - I'm sure several others on this blog will remember the lead-up to "WrestleMania 18", where the nWo smashed a cinder block on one of Austin's knees, only for him to have the opposite knee bandaged the following week.

    ReplyDelete
  55. If a blowjob lasts three hours, she's doing it wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Punk making the urn "talk" was brilliant and hysterical.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Not me. Each passing show has me more confident in 925K.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Worse, it'd be like Liger getting a USA chant against Luger!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Yeah I'm hoping I'm in the ballpark too -- shows like this certainly help the cause!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Did you go? I didn't, and from the start with the awkward PTP/Cena stuff, I knew I made the right decision.

    ReplyDelete
  61. More recaps of shit from last year! Keep Rock on the road! 925! 925! 925!

    ReplyDelete
  62. No, I coach lacrosse and we had practice tonight... and it is sad, because there was a time I would have seriously consider cancelling (due to the weather of course) rather than miss a "Wrestlemania run up Raw"- now I haad forgotten it was even in town until I turned it on.
I used to have a group of 7-8 guys that would go to the shows and watch Raws and PPVs, now there is only one guy left aside from me who still watches and I don't think either of us would spend the money to sit through that for three hours... that is not a snarky smark comment either, because there is still a lot I enjoy... but that show was just brutal tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  63. They've been having the exact same match in the exact same spot on the card for FIVE YEARS now. To put that in perspective, imagine if Rock and HHH were still feuding over the IC Title in 2003.

    ReplyDelete
  64. With the new Wrestlemania model seemingly being to revolve the shows around the old stars and part timers, are we going to reach a point where we will start saying, "Wait until after Wrestlemania, then it will start getting good again"?

I was really, REALLY in to the product leading in to the Rumble, like as interested as I had been in years and I was looking forward to Wrestlemania. But, it has just been so bland, predictable and paint-by-numbers, it has just killed me. And I get what they are going for (I was OK with Cena/Rock II- it is a necessary evil) but there is just nothing that has been even remotely cool or interesting. It is all just super bland

    ReplyDelete
  65. Firstly, that new show on A&E, Bates Motel was actually fairly decent once you can get past the fact Norman Bates has an iPhone and well in general just does normal 2013 teenager things.

Anyways, I don't remember the exact wording but to sum it up, I believe it was Cult who said who cares about the results as long as the build is good. This show tonight proved my point because not only is the build shit but I highly doubt 1 million people are gonna dish out 65 bucks to see everyone get their win back. I don't think casuals are THAT stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  66. We can change our predictions leading up to the show, right?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Oh boy that was a bad show.

Have I been transported back to the glory days of 1995 where Undertaker is feuding with a dastardly heel who dared steal his urn? Punk's being totally wasted as the guy fulfilling Kama's wish. Very disappointed in the build for this match so far. Hope they can deliver when it counts.

Brock vs. Triple H has had the best build but that ending segment wasn't very good. Dragged on and the people weren't into it. Plus Triple H could be setting himself up for the ultimate disappointment. If he loses and the crowd shits on him(very good possibility) he's going to go out with 70,000 people chanting "You Tapped Out"

The Rock not being around 2 weeks in a row is pretty bad. It's their marquee match and last week neither guy was on TV and this week Cena beat his brother and they just aired packages. I hope with 3 weeks left Rock can show up.

I don't know why they are wasting Jericho on Fandango. There are plenty of young guys for Jericho to work with at WrestleMania. Cody Rhodes isn't doing anything, Antonio Cesaro isn't doing anything, Wade Barrett is a mystery. Why Fandango? A guy whose push they abandoned before?

The Shield vs. Show, Sheamus, and Orton should be good but after that they've GOT to do something different with the Shield. They've been doing the same thing for a while. They need to move on to a new injustice. Win some titles. Something.

Henry vs. Ryback I'm not looking forward to too much. What is Ryback going to be able to do to Henry? If he can hit his finish I'll be surprised.

Man I don't mean to sound overly negative but this Raw did nothing for me. And looking at the build to WrestleMania it has been severely lacking. Last year I was extremely excited counting down the days to WrestleMania. Here we are 3 weeks out and I couldn't care less. And that sucks because it's WrestleMania! It's the highlight of the Wrestling year.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I didn't watch this show but holee crap does it sound awful. I think the money would have been in Taker/Brock but I guess HHH has to get his win back....

    ReplyDelete
  69. With fast-forward enabled I got through this Raw in about 40 minutes, watching Titus' promo, the 3-way match, some of Lesnar/HHH and dipping into other bits before deeming them unnecessary. Between Vince's obvious dismissal of the undercard for Wrestlemania, the fact that all undercard matches mean nothing because secondary titles are worthless and the absence of one-half of the Wrestlemania Main Event, this is about as disillusioned I've been with the company in a long, long time.

I generally only watch from Rumble to Mania/Extreme Rules, each year and that season tends to be good but this year it is just atrocious. Jericho returns and, yes he's a part-timer, but he's having the best matches on pretty much every show and is rewarded with a 'Mania match against the worst gimmick in recent memory. Guys like Dolph and Kofi are wrestling each other in the same spot on the card, five years on from their original feud. I mentioned this earlier, but that's like having Rock and HHH battling for the IC title in 2003. The upward momentum that seemed exciting last year (Cesaro, Barrett, Shield, Bryan, Ziggler) has all stalled and they're back where they "belong" while the real stars take the spotlight. It's just a pretty depressing show, really and with Rock/Brock pencilled in for next year, it's hard to get excited by any new "stars" because we all know they'll be pushed aside when it matters.

    ReplyDelete
  70. On a positive note: Did anyone catch Paul Rosenberg's tout? He does some great wrestling interviews on his show. Pretty neat seeing him.

    ReplyDelete
  71. If you're going to give Big E and Ziggler a team name, you could do worse than Jacked Dolph.

    ReplyDelete
  72. TEAM Jacked Dolph.

    ReplyDelete
  73. That was one thing I forgot to mention: Obvious they want Ryback hitting his Shellshock on Henry to be a WM moment, so they better fucking practice that finish on the house show circuit or something.

Not only are 70,000+ gonna be raining Goldberg chants on the guy but we get Heyman redux, Ryback could be dead in the water with the fans.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I missed almost the entire show and my DVR erased it before I got home, which is pretty telling. They seem to be on autopilot right now, meh.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I think they oughta let Ryback unleash a Jackhammer/Spear combo at Mania. Sure it sounds bad but the crowd will probably explode and that Shellshock move is weak and Im betting he botches it at Mania...

    ReplyDelete
  76. I've been thinking about that recently. The Jackhammer is a great finisher I wonder why they don't give it to somebody.

    ReplyDelete
  77. It's hilarious to me if they don't see that a Wrestlemania audience is going to shit all over Ryback while cheering Henry. There's so many matches on this card that have the potential for crazy/hilarious crowd antics.

    Henry/Ryback - They'll side with Henry, surely.

HHH/Lesnar - HHH is usually over at WM but this year, who knows.

Rock/Cena - Cena winning could cause a hilarious reaction.

Even Fandango/Jericho could get a funny reaction given how retarded that character is. If nothing else, the crowd for this show will be fascinating.

  78. WHAT DOES CUM TASTE LIKE?

    ReplyDelete
  79. ...Is the joke that he's black?

    ReplyDelete
  80. I agree, he shouldn't even attempt to hoist Henry.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Make the main event a "Loser Must Feltch The Winner" and I'll order the show.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Because it sends a positive message to the kids.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Is it bad that I have a strong feeling the crowd will work with Fandango just because of the sheer ridiculousness.

    ReplyDelete
  84. But if you were 30 for WrestleManias 9, 11 and 13, it'd be a different story.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Forget that. Whatever happened to Celtic Frost? Is it true that they got lost?

    ReplyDelete
  86. I haven't watched RAW in awhile because I've been super busy with work and such but I was finally able to catch it tonight and it figures that the first show I see in awhile is a horrible show.

A couple of things I was wondering while watching this show:

What happened to the Chris Jericho/Dolph Ziggler feud?

Shouldn't Fandango be feuding with R-Truth instead of Jericho, seeing as how he never did get the tag title shot he and R-Truth were promised, yet R-Truth managed to get a long tag title reign with a guy he had never teamed up with before then?

Shouldn't the Divas division have been put out of its misery by now? Especially considering that the only decent worker that division had (Eve) quit the company two months ago, keeping it around now is like doing a "Fright Night" remake without Chris Sarandon, just all-around stupid.

What's with the lack of Rock? At the very least, he should be sending in "via satellite" videos to plug his match with John Cena.

I'm still going to order Wrestlemania but they really need to improve the buildup because right now it's starting to make Fall Brawl 1999 (the infamous show that didn't advertise any matches until six days before the show) look like a well structured card.

    ReplyDelete
  87. This is now what Paul Heyman's promos consist of:

"BROCK THE BROCK BROCK BROCK. LESNAAAAAARGH. My favorite movie was... ERIN BROCKOVITCH!"

    ReplyDelete
  88. Not to mention that Kofi's also feuded with Wade Barrett on-and-off for two years now.
Even Sam Houston and "Dangerous" Danny Davis would tell these guys they need to move on.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Or if something funny happened.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Or an ACTUAL Liger getting a chant against the hybrid of Jushin Liger and Lex Luger!!

    ReplyDelete
  91. They should have. Talentless hacks.

    ReplyDelete
  92. It's FAAAAAAHN.... DAAAAAAAAAHN... gooooh. Type it right.

    ReplyDelete
  93. If I could assfuck John Cena for every time I've read that, he'd have a bloody, prolapsed rectum by now.

    And I'd have AIDS.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Lex Liger? Jushin Thunder Luger?

    THE MIND REELS.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I have a feeling that Jericho will wind up crushing him and its the last we ever see of Fandango......

    ReplyDelete
  96. I wonder what the plans for Punk/Taker were before Paul Bearer passed away because this urn thing is doing nothing for me.

    ReplyDelete
  97. there were none. they just make stuff up as they're moving along.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I get the "obsolete" thing. It's from the time Stuttering John from Howard Stern's show interviewed Booker T. after Booker's horrible showing on the game show "Weakest Link".

    ReplyDelete
  99. "See, that’s exactly why the GM concept is so useless now: Instead of
Ryback challenging Henry because he’s a MAN and he’s PISSED OFF, we have
to get Vickie to book the match on his behalf."

I'm not sure this was exactly the case. Ryback had called out Henry, Mark responded and the two were ready to fight right then and there before the GMs stopped the impending brawl.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Question: is this the year that the WWE has finally jumped the shark?

I mean, there are always bad periods but you could always (well, "always" for more than ten years) count on the WWE bringing their "a-game" during the build up to WrestleMania.

this year it seems all over the place and totally screwed up.

    ReplyDelete

I can seriously imagine Vince seeing it on the monitor backstage and finding it the height of comedy, then remembering his grandkids were probably watching.

Although who am I to judge? I laughed just seeing you mention it.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I'm assuming by all the downvotes that people think Rock is a bigger draw than Brock. lulz.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Given the ridiculous amount of snow New York and New Jersey has had in the last few months, that could very well be possible.

    ReplyDelete
  105. If you were 30 for Wrestlemania 9,11, and 13.. I'd wonder how old you were for 10 and 12. I'd also wonder why your aging process is so fucked up.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Well OBVIOUSLY he'd be 30 and using a time machine, and then erasing any recollections of having seen those WrestleManias.

    You people, sometimes...

    ReplyDelete
  107. I used to live in Knoxville during Smoky Mountain Wrestling's heyday so that does not surprise me as Knoxville's always been a big wrestling town. SMW and USWA were over huge when I was there. Great town overall and those SMW shows caused me to greatly respect and appreciate the mic work of Ron Wright, one of the greatest, most underrated heels ever.

    ReplyDelete
  108. More Triple H hate. Man, you're creative.

  110. He lost me at WWE is dying. Yeah, a company that has a steady profit of 50 million dollars is on the breaking point of dying.

I actually read some of his post. His ideas are way more appalling than WWE's and it's funny how condensing he is and how he thinks he knows everything.

    ReplyDelete
  111. WWE "Creative" really needs to start watching the current dramatic TV shows that are all the rage now [Game Of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Sons Of Anarchy, Boardwalk Empire, Mad Men, Revolution to name a few] and take notes on how to properly build storylines, how to properly develop characters, how to introduce and build up new faces and how to build up certain characters as dangerous threats.
Even a mid-level show like "The Glades" does a much better job in all of these departments than WWE "Creative".

    ReplyDelete
  112. The idea that HHH is trying to hold Jericho down is hysterical. I'm sure the only reason HHH brought him back was to bury him. Seems legit.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Yeah, we need more green big oafs with two left feet getting more spotlight.

    ReplyDelete
  114. He must be upset that Punk and Jericho was higher up on the card than his match vs Undertaker last year. Oh wait, then why would Jericho have been wrestling in championship match? Wouldn't Triple H just veto that too?

    ReplyDelete
  115. While the writing is pure shit now, it's highly unlikely WWE is "dying", especially when they're about to have a WrestleMania that will likely break all PPV records.
That would be like saying Paramount is dying just because you hate the Iron Man movies when in fact those movies make a shitload of money and have helped keep Paramount on top of the movie industry.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  118. While I agree with what you're saying, WWE's writers are a step below 'Days of Our Lives' writers. Most, are just using WWE as a launching pad for their career, in hopes to one day write for those shows. So to believe their writers are capable to write like those show's writers is nonsense.

Also, these shows have about 10 shows per year and about 5 seasons. Raw has 10 shows in 2 1/2 months.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Yeah, he probably thinks that Hunter's trying to hold Rock down too, nevermind the fact that Rock has a net worth of $175 million dollars and can easily say "Fuck you guys, you need me not the other way around" if they want him to do something he doesn't like.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I understand he's bringing the cash for WWE, but there's no one more annoying than the Rock in WWE right now. From the way he's booked, his conservative matches, the fact that he's not even in wrestling shape, to his long incoherent, long-winded promos that feel like 20 minutes of stand up comedy with the Rock, all the way to feeling as there are more important things to do than hype up the biggest show of WWE's year.

    ReplyDelete
  121. And, God help us, just look at what's happened when TNA tried to ape Sons of Anarchy? Suddenly you have Austin Aries threatening to pull a man's tooth out with a hammer on live television. Knowing how Vince keeps up with social trends and entertainment though, we're probably due for a John Cena promo featuring the singing fish from Sopranos.

    ReplyDelete
  122. John Cena has a fever dream and a fish tells him he has been a heel all this time.

I"m expecting Jericho to squash the guy, that's usually how the "coward heel putting off their first match" thing goes.

  128. As I'm fond of saying nowadays - watching current WWE programming is like watching a toddler tell a story with toys. "Then Ziggler's mad at Jericho and Jericho's mad at Ziggler, but then Jericho's away and AJ's mad at Daniel Bryan so Ziggler's mad at Kane! Also, the Prime Time Playas are mad at Cena for some reason!"

If they do an ep of Raw where The Shield take Ryback out the Pine Barrens to kill him, then end up losing him, all will be forgiven.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Nah, at least for that you had HHH/Undertaker with a decent build and the intrigue of The Rock's return and role at the show. There's literally nothing intriguing for this show. I actually forgot Punk/Undertaker was a match - and that was less than an hour after watching Raw!

    ReplyDelete
  131. Whilst that could be fun, it seems such a massive waste of Jericho. He's putting on the best matches of anyone in the company at the moment (at least on a week-to-week basis) so to flush away a guaranteed 3-star-plus match with Cesaro/Barrett/Ziggler/Rhodes to lump him with Johnny Curtis just seems a bit dumb. Especially when this is shaping up as a show that's going to DESPERATELY need a show-stealing match to make it worthwhile.

    ReplyDelete
  132. I'm just waiting for Hornswoggle to start speaking backwards ala the little guy on Twin Peaks - at least then we'll know Vince has reached the early 90s. Then look forward to the ring being replaced by a pool and the Raw set being made to look like an apartment building for a few months of Raw Is Melrose Place!

    ReplyDelete
  139. Another week of 'this show was terrible! people should stop watching it and not get wm! I'll be repeating this every week and then while I'm watching wm!'

I know I've said this a million times, but they're not going to change their way of doing things because people complain but keep watching. If you hate the show, STOP WATCHING THE SHOW! Obviously intended for the masses, not people that make money watching the show.

    ReplyDelete

  143. Vickie Guerrero and Teddy Long are supposed to be able to separate Ryback and Mark Henry? I know it's been overdone, but these two desperately need the pull apart brawl where they need the entire locker room to separate them.

  144. I knew there was a reason I stopped DVRing this show......

And JERICHO VS FAHN-DAHN-GO at WM??????????

    WTF?

    ReplyDelete
  145. People who make that claim should be required to point which 2 of the three hours would have comprised a "pretty good" show. 2 hours is a long fucking time to fill out of last night's 3.25 hours - there were barely even any touts!

    ReplyDelete
  151. Am I supposed to believe this is some sort of magic xylophone?

    ReplyDelete
  152. I get that but while it plays to Takers' "McGuffin," it ignores everything about what makes the Punk character great. The CM Punk that got over in 2011 was one who wouldn't have even bothered stealing the urn because he would see it as pointless and stupid. That Punk character would have been focused more on the fact that Taker gets to be gone an entire calendar year ever year but come back for a big Mania payday. Ergo, his motivation would be to defeat Taker so that he wouldn't be a Mania draw anymore.

I didn't even like the random setup for this match. I think Punk should have just "snapped" after losing to Cena and called out Taker citing the above frustrations. It would have sold the match 1000% times better.

That said, this match STILL has more steam going into it than anything else on the card.

    ReplyDelete
  153. A better stipulation would have been a "Brock can wear a T-Shirt and shorts in the airport" match.

I was so stoked for Bischoff's book. The day it came out I went to Barnes & Nobel and just sat in one of those chairs reading it. I couldn't wait to read about the nWo and all the turmoil with WCW. But it wasn't there. It was pretty boring. The chapter on Korea was really good, but that was about it.

Really, the ones where the wrestlers write the books themselves are the best. I know Ric's was ghost written, but it was pretty damn good.

Anyone read Hulk's My Life Outside The Ring? I thought it was damn interesting. I really enjoyed the detail he went into about coming up through the business with Ed.

  177. Yeah I had zero desire to see hhh brock 2 but I think the build has been great and I'm excited to see what they can do in a no.dq match. You don't see any wrestling feuds get this heated anymore, which is nice even if it is huntor.

I just saw the punk undertaker promo from last night and I loved it. I thought it was dumb he won a match to.face taker but at least it gave punk a big tv win. Since that I love the build they've done. Punk stealing the urn is awesome. Punks on the verge of being the biggest heel ever other than flair and stealing the urn is a classic old school heel move. Undertakers character is cartoony so punks playing it a little over the top. I would rather see undertaker in cartoonish over the top feuds thanthe epic serious feuds he had with hbk and hhh.

    ReplyDelete
  178. The build up for Mania has convinced me not to purchase it. Not spending $70 on a show I have 0 investment in.

    ReplyDelete
  179. Yes, complain about the show you didn't watch. How very hive-mind of you.

    ReplyDelete
  180. So with the retirement stipulation, does anyone else here feel pretty confident that Triple H is actually doing the job at Mania? I definitely do. Here's my thinking: the results of the big three matches are SO predictable (Cena, HHH, Taker) that I feel like even WWE knows they need to go against the grain in one of them. (Especially since the NYC crowd will be favoring the guy who's gonna lose in each of those matches.) Out of those three:

    - Cena isn't losing, UNLESS the plan is to have him snap and turn heel out of frustration. That's super unlikely though, and if they were gonna turn Cena, they might as well have him turn heel in order to win.

    - Taker isn't losing based on how they chose to do this build. CM Punk as the cool unber babyface future of the company? He might get that win. CM Punk as the reigning 500+ day champion who is the heel center of the company? he might get that win. But CM Punk the after thought whiny bitch heel who stole Taker's urn? He's getting a 10-minute glorified squash with no believable near falls. It sucks, but they've booked themselves into a corner in which Punk winning would just seem bizarre at this point.

    - Lesnar-HHH, now I could legitimately see Hunter losing. He'd get the honor of being put out to pasture on the GRANDEST STAGE OF THEM ALL, which after his buddies Flair and HBK is suddenly the hot new fad. HHH losing a normal grudge match would have seemed ridiculous— but now, the loss would basically be an excuse for him to ask for an emotional blowjob from the crowd, which makes way more sense. PLUS, Jesus, they need to keep a heel strong SOMEWHERE on the card. And with Punk's impending burial, Lesnar is really the only main event heel option.

Plus, secondary prediction: Punk loses to Taker, Lesnar wins, and the next night on Raw Lesnar & Heyman destroy Punk, putting him on the shelf for a few months and setting up a Punk-Lesnar feud down the road.
