Complete Wargames Listing

Hi Scott,

Never minding my earlier e-mail, here's the complete listing for the Wargames DVD. Looks like their getting everything in, good and bad.

Take care.

Jon

That's exactly what everyone wanted:  The complete collection, as originally presented.  Good on them.

Comments

  1. Blast it I was hoping for a Doomsday Cage match.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I wonder what War Games fantasy booking is under blu ray exclusives?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Hell of a set. Hopefully this means the Wargames 1992 VHS tape price will finally come down so I can grab one and convert it to DVD lol.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Is that really a laugh out loud moment?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Probably the formula for a "standard" War Games match:

-Two good workers for the first five, maybe a little blood.
-Heels win coin toss, and every new guy is like a "hot tag", with that side controlling most of the two minute period.

-Maybe one period where the faces hold their own despite being a man down.
-The Match Beyond: set up the loser, then execute.

Wonder who's going to talk about it though...

    ReplyDelete
  6. I think that might be the worst main event in history. It's not just bad, it's insultingly bad.

    ReplyDelete
  7. As bad as this sounds, I like it. It reaches the point of so bad it's hilarious. Heenan's commentary has what sounds like some thinly veiled insults to the match which crack me up every time.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Yeah but they did include that flaming piece of dog shit 1998 wargames too, if you put the 1988 tower of doom on, might as well give us 1996 as well, if only to bury Hogan more. . .

    ReplyDelete
  9. Vicious collector's item here! And I don't mean Sid Vicious!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I think its more of an amazed laugh. You'd be amazed to if you went on Amazon and saw that one VHS of Wrestle War 92 costs $110!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yeah, it's hard to snag for less than $70 or $80. The price usually comes down though on these shows when the big matches come out on DVD.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I've only ever seen it on scramblevision, but I remember Heenan being on for it too. I wish BH could have done some guest commentaries for some bad matches for WWE DVDs .

    ReplyDelete
  13. They BETTER NOT blur the blood on this.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I feel bad for stealing someone elses gimmick but 411 article:

    http://www.411mania.com/wrestling/news/281146/WWE-News:-HBK-Appearing-at-WWE-Live-Events,-CM-Punk-Reenacts-Bad-Promo.htm

Punk reenacts a terrible promo pretty well.

    ReplyDelete
  15. It's worth checking out just for all the logic gaps alone. There's a part where they're in the first cage and Flair slips something down to the guys in the next cage. No idea of what it is and it's never mentioned again, but it looked like a spoon or something. As Heenan said: "What a thing for television!"

    ReplyDelete
  16. Watching it now on DM:

Tony: "Where's are Ultimate Solution and where's Z-Gangsta?"
Bobby: "Wait z-minute, you'll probably find out"

While Hogan and Savage are beating on Flair:
"There's no wrestling in that ring"

    ReplyDelete
  17. So, I'm mostly a NWA/WCW neophyte (sacrilege around here, I know) beyond some episodes I've seen on WWE 24/7. If I were going to spend a couple hours watching 5 wargames matches, which ones should they be?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Five?

I vote for both 1987 matches, 1989, 1991, and 1992. Those are the best of the bunch IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  19. It's not that bad of a match, if you can ignore it never made any sense. It would have worked in a video game or a movie, but for an actual match? Nope.

    ReplyDelete
  20. If you want some SPORTZ ENTERTAINMENT in your WarGames, watch 96 and 97.

    ReplyDelete
  21. What were they paying Jeep Swenson and Tony Lister by the minute or something?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yeah that's my worry too. Wargames in B/W in HD!

    ReplyDelete
  23. "It's terrible, but it's ridiculous enough not to be boring"

That's what I was getting at. It's so bad it's entertaining and the commentary helps a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I would cry if they do that.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The world was not ready for Jumpin Jeff Farmer

    ReplyDelete
  26. Anyone who's spent any time digging deeper into the IWC is aware of this promo. Too bad it's not the same Jeff Farmer as nWo Sting.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't think they will. afaik that "Attitude Era" dvd had a different rating than most of their releases as well.

I am pretty sure they know that just like that dvd, a dvd containing every War Games match is something that mostly isn't bought by kids.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thinking about Cabana's podcast made me realize how Punk and Cabana are Jay and Silent Bob, that, is, hetero life partners.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I've got a PPV version of that show.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Stings Squadron vs. the Dangerous Alliance never came it on dvd, though. and imo an unreleased five star match makes worth every dvd set.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm buying this for the Sting/Steamboat/Windham/Rhodes/Koloff vs. Dangerous Alliance match, because it's the fucking Dangerous Alliance.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'll send it back to them with a turd mashed in the case if they do that.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oooh lucky. Did you record them yourself or get them in trades? Finding first generation off air recordings of those shows in anything resembling decent quality can be tough.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anyone know what the deal is with those Ulitmate Jeopardy matches? Are they any good?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Not bad, but he sounds way too polished. It's an okay imitation, but not really funny. I like that he gave it some love though haha.

The original is a classic -- "yip", "I don't like it..." and "you've got me.... mad now" are a permanent part of my vocabulary.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think chances are good for this one being untouched too, although they have a crack team (or a team on crack) working on these things and they've surprised me before with inexplicable edits and modifications, or creative recreations of things.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yeah, that Dusty bit about tearing down a fence had me in stitches when I watched the match. I was like "ummm, sure!"

    ReplyDelete
  38. Believe it or not, I got them off Ebay way back in the day, right before Vince owned everything. I've even got a PPV version of The Wrestling Classic. I've got whatever WCW PPV from '89 had the damn country concert right in the middle of it. One of the Flair/Steamboat matches has a video package set entirely to "theme from ROH Bryan Danielson" (The Final Countdown).

I got a few of my copies from an on-line store that used to be kick-ass but then took a hit once WWE got serious about cracking down. Only got burned once (dude from Ebay advertised a PPV version of something... I got it and it turned out to be the THV version, which I already had), and even then I got a refund when I called him on it.

I'm not sure how many of them are 1st generation, but they're all extremely watchable, IMO. I really should get a DVD burner for them.

    ReplyDelete
  39. What ever happened to him? And what ever came of Motley Cruze?!

    ReplyDelete
  40. OH ROCK STAR! YOU SO FUNNNNNNY! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  41. At first I thought he was doing the promo but actually doing it good but then he kept the screw ups so I figured he was doing a mix of new delivery with the same screw ups.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I know, it's like he's being dead serious about it! "Oh you wanna know how much it hurts to be in a cage match? Go pull down a fence and lay on it in your yard".

    ReplyDelete
  43. Based on Punk's clear knowledge of Internet wrestling memes I'm guessing he reads several of the supersmark blogs (e.g. Blog of Doom, Botchamania).

    ReplyDelete
  44. I do like some good SE.

    ReplyDelete
  45. This list makes me wonder what happened in 88 and 90. haha. But thanks for the suggestions. I'll be over on youtube if any needs me...

    ReplyDelete
  46. Nothing from 1988? They had a bunch on that tour.

Looking over all the war games matches I am just realizing that El Gigante was in a bunch from 1991. How did he ever fit the cage?

    ReplyDelete
  47. I don't think there were any televised Wargames matches in 1990, which is too bad. I'd be surprised if there were even any recorded on a tour if they haven't surfaced by now.

There is a good match from 1988 on one of the DVD sets though (and I think on this upcoming one too) but I like the other ones better.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yes you should!

Yeah WWE really started cracking down in 2003/2004, I know a few people who received cease and desist or "you need to pay us damages" letters in that timeframe.

    ReplyDelete
  49. They only blur or go black and white because Classics on Demand is PG. this DVD is most certainly not.

    ReplyDelete
  50. There's two matches from 88 on the DVD.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Both are actually really entertaining matches.

    ReplyDelete
  52. My rankings are slightly different because I hated the finish of 92 (should've been the Deathlock as a more definitive finish) and Dillon's involvement in the first one. But still great stuff.

I'd say watch the second from 87, then 91, 92, 94 and 96. Good variety there.

    ReplyDelete
  53. There are two from '88. There were none in 90.

    Tower of Doom Match
The Road Warriors, “Dr. Death” Steve Williams, Ron Garvin & Jimmy Garvin vs. Kevin Sullivan, Mike Rotunda, Al Perez, Russian Assassin & Ivan Koloff
    Great American Bash • July 10, 1988

    Brutality

    War Games Match
Dusty Rhodes, Lex Luger, Nikita Koloff, “Dr. Death” Steve Williams & Paul Ellering vs. The Four Horsemen (Ric Flair, Barry Windham, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard & J.J. Dillon)
Great American Bash Tour – Greensboro, NC • July 16, 1988

    ReplyDelete
  54. But yeah, like Scott said, this set is as good as it gets and the Blu-ray extras are the ones everyone was bitching about anyway. Can't wait.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Dusty should talk about it -- he developed the concept and laid out the match.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Dusty is maybe my favorite color guy ever other than Heenan. Bobby, Tony and Dusty was a HELL of a team. They made even bad matches entertaining.

    ReplyDelete
  57. The Horseman DVD has this match - which is appearing in the new set as well. Only one on DVD prior to this set (to my knowledge):

    War Games Match
Dusty Rhodes, Lex Luger, Nikita Koloff, “Dr. Death” Steve Williams & Paul Ellering vs. The Four Horsemen (Ric Flair, Barry Windham, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard & J.J. Dillon)
Great American Bash Tour – Greensboro, NC • July 16, 1988

    ReplyDelete
  58. I totally missed the one after the tower of doom.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I borrowed this from the WWEDVDnews.com comments on this article but "The ECW match from December 1995 in the Blu-ray exclusives is a great addition as ECW never aired it on TV and never released it on home video."
    Pretty cool if true

    ReplyDelete
  60. What did they do to that, I'm drawing a blank? This oughta be good lol

    ReplyDelete
  61. Hopefully they don't blur Benoit either.

    ReplyDelete
  62. IIRC, that is the match that they cut out the pieces where they cut to the back for some Bischoff thing? The only edits of late due to violence are choking examples - like in the WMXV release (Austin/Rock)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Best WCW match ever!

    ReplyDelete
  64. They didn't on the Elimination Chamber anthology and that came out years ago

    ReplyDelete
  65. Yeah I enjoy both of them a lot, although like I said, in a different way. The post-match ending to the 1996 Wargames is fantastic too, between the Sting angle and one of my favorite "meta" heel moments ever, with Hogan ranting on about Savage and Elizabeth's marriage and spitting on her, while Tony, Dusty and Bobby are disgusted and in fear of their physical safety as the NWO storms the set. Just really well executed and I think it pretty much ended any of the face heat Hogan was getting between his turn and that point.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'd say Missy Hyatt and Rick Steiner vs. Paul E. Dangerously and Arn Anderson in a steel cage @ Great American Bash 1991 was the worst main event in history.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Oh yeah that's right, I remember reading about this. I think it was stuff to further he Flair/Bischoff angle, right? I hate those sorts of edits, just leave it intact. It really ruins the spirit of the shows IMO.

There is also about a minute or two inexplicably edited from the Bret Hart / Bob Backlund match at Survivor Series 1994 that's actually on the Coliseum Video. Not sure why -- I assume the original master tape was damaged and they figured nobody would miss it.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Love everything bout that match except the ending.. Didnt like the ringpost finish imo.. But hey cant have it all my way.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I did enjoy the drama of 96 with the fake sting angle to be honest, n it did set up the crow gimmick.

    ReplyDelete
  70. And od it tru that's the only time until his submission match w brett that austin bladed? Or was bret bsing?

    ReplyDelete
  71. I'm not sure how much he did it after that, but he bladed during his Starrcade 1993 match with Dustin Rhodes.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Didn't know that. Good stuff!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Any of hte ones before '92 are good to great. After '92 you get some crap, then you get nWo vs. WCW which I was never a fan of as it took a brutal match and made it into more ego stroking for the nWo.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Oh man, they actually put the War Games 2000 match from Nitro in the set. If you've never seen it, you're in for a treat. Or something.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I like to search for WCW VHS on eBay - change it to "sold listings" ony and go highest to lowest. Anything of rarity is going to go for a solid $100 - esp those 2000 tapes (BatB obviously excluded - that one is $250 min)

    ReplyDelete
  76. When it gets to my house from Amazon and it is missing the third disk, I wouldn't complain. Still plenty of goodness on the first two disks to make this a key buy. Bonus matches look fun.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Me too, it's insane how high some go, especially Bash at the Beach 2000.

I snagged a mislabeled, pristine copy of of Great American Bash 1991 a few years ago for $20 (they were selling it simply as "Luger vs Windham" for the title.

I'm not really a tape collector as much as I am a 'footage gatherer's, so I don't mind essentially 'renting' the tapes by buying them at high prices, making my dub, and then sending it off to the next person, but I worry about getting burned for some of those tapes that have no return policy or guarantee of condition. I've had a few incidents where people have described the tapes as in good working condition but then they arrived trashed. Their response was usually something like "well I don't have a VCR to test it anymore". eBay is usually pretty good about resolving it, but not always.

I was able to get a few rarer titles on interlibrary loans, which can be a nice way of going about that for little to no money.

    ReplyDelete
  78. its lame.

i think im just over cm punk.

to me this is just punk tryin to stay "indy" when he knows he is established.

    ReplyDelete
  79. cant go wrong there.

    i fully endorse

    ReplyDelete
  80. 87 to me is the gold standard.

you can not even hear JR in some patches.

    Thats heat.

    ReplyDelete
  81. or bad audio mixing... Just kidding!

Aren't there two different releases of the first Wargames match on tape? I seem to recall there being two different commentaries, depending on which version you have.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Love me some Dusty on commentary. He was just so ridiculous. And he brought enthusiasm and passion. A great color guy so long as you aren't going for a face/heel dynamic. Just like Piper and Savage, he is a great 3rd for a commentary trio but they don't work well in a duo.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I like that "footage gatherer". I prefer "archivist" ;)
I do like that there is a healthy VHS market still out there. I recently picked up the Mania collection from '97 (so original music, etc) which covers up to 13 for around $40. Great shape - looks awesome on top of one of my DVD shelves.
I have DVDs made of the '06 through '01 PPVs, customed menus etc but never got the older stuff. Sets like these have so much stuff I've never seen.

    ReplyDelete
  84. By the way, I think its awesome there is no commentary for this match on the Horseman set. Love the unfiltered atmopshere.

    ReplyDelete
  85. That works too!

Yeah, I'm a little bit nutty and meticulous when it comes to the VHS to DVD conversions, so it's a fairly slow going process for me, but I've converted quite a lot by now. I own more expensive analog video equipment and VCRs than any sane person should in 2013 lol. It is still 2013 right?

In a way, it's kind of fun though. I had to get by with all the cheap stuff and renting tapes for $1 when I was a kid, so it's nice to play around with the "Rolls Royce VCRs" and such of the 1980s and 1990s for pennies on the dollar now.

    ReplyDelete
  86. holy shit, a Chris Benoit inclusion.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Can I just say how much I enjoyed that 2005 Elimination Chamber? It's one of my favorites.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Yeah, Dusty used to be unbearable to me but he has somehow really grown on me as a color guy. Short bursts I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Gotta love seeing Tower of Doom, the SMW and 2 ECW matches also getting showed

    ReplyDelete
  90. Can anyone familiar with the Blu-Ray exclusive matches offer an opinion whether they make the BR worth buying?
