Cena-Taker: Let the Fantasy Booking Begin!

Obviously Cena v. Undertaker is the money match at WM30 and there’s been lots of discussion in my inbox, so let’s hit a couple:

So I've been racking my brain with regard to the inevitable Title vs. Streak match at Wrestlemania XXX between Cena and Taker.

Of course, the easy and logical (albeit predictable) thing to do is put Taker over. He wins the title in his last match, retires with it and a perfect 22-0 record at Wrestlemania. This is certainly the safe way to go and probably the most likely.

HOWEVA...

Let's say...Cena wins.

With help.

From the Shield.

Undertaker loses his last match. Fails to win the belt. 21-1 at Wrestlemania. What better way to FINALLY do the Cena turn than to cost the Phenom his most prized accolade? Obviously, it's not likely to happen, but what a great storyline that could be.

Say you're the booker. Which finish do you go with? It's hard to go wrong with either. I would probably let Taker decide. If he wanted to go out on top, great. If he was fine with putting Cena over and ushering in something completely different and unexpected that could really help the company out, even better.

I guess I'm saying I'd go with #2.

What say you?

The streak’s not ending and Cena’s not turning heel…hold on, I’m getting a beep.

Hey Scott, this story for the Undertaker's streak at WM 30 just came to me today, thought I'd run it by you and see what you think. So, the Undertaker being undead/unbeaten at WM is tired of existing, like a vampire who has lived too long and just wants to die, but can't. He's went through all these opponents at WM, but none of them have beaten him. So, he turns to the one man who would truly have a chance of beating him/ending his existence at WM-Super Cena. This sets up an inner struggle with Cena played out on T.V. leading up to the event. Cena wants to beat the Undertaker at WM and cement his existence as the greatest superstar of all time, but he also doesn't want to be known as the man who sent the Undertaker out of the WWE forever. The match itself would bring back some of the original elements of the Undertaker character, i.e. the zombie sit-up, the no-selling, etc. Somehow, the match ends with the streak intact, but the Undertaker is set free from his zombie existence and disappears forever, sending off the greatest character in WWE history. So, what do you think?

I don’t know about the set free from his zombie existence stuff, but I’m intrigued by the idea of Taker not wanting to carry the burden of the streak and looking for someone to beat him.  Kind of a reverse Shawn Michaels deal, where Taker keeps picking a fight with SuperCena, who naturally is reluctant to take the match knowing that he’ll inevitably have to RISE ABOVE THE STREAK and beat him.

Comments

  1. The E has no excuse in blowing this angle/match. This match has literally been set in stone for the last 2-3 years, and its been obvious

  2. Apparently Lesnar is also a possibility. As Scott points out, Cena isn't turning and Taker isn't losing, so booking a Cena/Taker match would ultimately be disappointing.

So we'll get Taker going over Lesnar. I mean, why not? Lesnar will probably have lost to the entire roster by then anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Why not make Cena/Taker a greatest hits compilation of all of Taker's matches? Cena can try putting him down with an ether-soaked rag, getting 10 guys (including a Poochie cameo) to stuff him in a casket, then the Brood coming to make the save by hanging Cena from the cell, only for him to be rescued and brought back into the match by Pete Rose and Bob Orton then FINALLY getting the duke after Cena passes out from the shock of seeing Taker tombstoning Jimmy Snuka (father of Tamina) on the floor.

  4. Yeah, I hope Taker never loses the streak. It's not as impressive to say, "I won all but one of my WrestleMania matches" during his Hall of Fame speech.

  5. FYI, I don't give a fuck what any of you have to say, I'm only here to get Baked.

  6. Personally for me the money match for WM30 is Punk vs Austin (With the PG handcuffs off). Takers streak is never ending not even to the mighty John Cena and after this years Mania I learnt that the dude is never turning heel :( Of course the biggest thing in history would be Cena turning heel and ending the streak but that's just never going to happen.

    ReplyDelete
  7. How disappointing is it for fans that Brock Lesnar has spent practically ALL of his entire second run feuding with Triple H?

As of now, this feud has gone on almost an entire year.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Punk/Austin, Taker/Cena, and idk...Rock/Brock sells this ppv automatically.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Would rather they do Ziggler (who needs a high profile win) vs Undertaker.

Cena/Punk finally to end their bloodfeud

    ReplyDelete
  10. As much as I like the guy, DOLPH ZIGGLER isn't ending the streak.

    ReplyDelete
  11. The near falls and the pop in the Superdome for Taker tombstoning and pinning Cena would be an all-timer... can't see how that would be disappointing.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Fuck you, man. That's it? I waited all this time...for that?!? Where's Cena raping innocent little elves and reanimating Mother Theresa just so he can murder her again? What about Punk descending from the heavens on a cloud created from the condensation of a decade's worth of Triple H's tears to GTS every motherfucker within a ten mile radius? AND WHY THE FUCK DIDN'T THE ROCK TURN HEEL?

    Why has thou forsaken me?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Will we get John Cena's inner monologue?

    ReplyDelete
  14. If you think Cena's turning heel or the streak is ending, then you jes be ate up wit' stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The psychology I was hoping they'd go this year with the Streak is that the Undertaker wants to retire, he wants to beaten but no one can and he refuses to just lay down. He cannot Rest in Peace until someone finally beats him. After losing he can do a promo where he can say "Finally the Undertaker can...REST....IN....PEEEEEAACEE!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Here's how you do it: Cena wins a Beat the Clock challenge 3 weeks before 'Mania for the right to challenge Taker. Then they do some junk where Cena wrestles Kane, and stuff with coffins and druids and Undertaker being on the Titantron happens to build up the match.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'd just like to say that Mother Teresa is a bitch. Fuck her.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Send your resume to Titan Towers NOW!

    ReplyDelete
  19. The buildup's going to be right out of the Shawn/Triple H playbook, meaning it's going to be four solid weeks of face-to-face promos and no actual physical interaction, while they build up the actual wrestling match.

Some might argue that's what they should have done this year, but why would they take such a silly approach when it's just CM Punk on the other side?

    ReplyDelete
  20. the ref should take an absolutely brutal bump to ensure him being down for a really long time.. we'll go with an armdrag, then all the living streak victims should all do run in's one by one and hit taker with something, ending of course with the pedigree, then the ref recovers for the dramatic slow hurt count.. one.. TWOOO.. taker kicks out and wins anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  21. If they screw up the easy route of having Cena get beat by the one guy almost everybody would accept winning at 'Mania, my head would figuratively explode.

    ReplyDelete
  22. This would be an AMAZING idea for a light-hearted Streak match. Like, if Miz or Fandango or some cocky heel character got bragging about their own undefeated streaks at Mania and their big mouths ended up with them facing Undertaker. Might not be a bad option one year if UT isn't ready to retire yet but wants a less high-impact bout.

    ReplyDelete
  23. "21-year unbeaten streak" still sounds pretty damn impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  24. How does it make sense for Undertaker to "tire of the burden" of the Streak? In kayfabe terms, he's a supernatural force of nature....even in less-than-kayfabe terms he's one of the biggest legends in WWE history and he has the most cherished achievement in wrestling history, so why would he want to give it up when he could always just retire undefeated at Mania? It doesn't make sense with Undertaker's character that he would suddenly go all Grail Knight in regards to his streak.

Then again, I withdraw all criticism if Undertaker is challenging Cena next year when someone like Miz runs in to try and take the match while Cena hems and haws. Taker proceeds to give the Jumping Tombstone to Miz: "you chose....poorly."

    ReplyDelete
  25. Do we know FOR SURE that Taker is retiring at Wrestlemania 30? We've been hearing for months/years about how banged up and constantly injured the guy is, but he looked pretty spry at WM29 and in those matches (albeit with limited ring time) against Ambrose and the entire Shield. Taker can't do a regular schedule any more but for one match a year, he can definitely still keep wrestling. It's not inconceivable that he stretches it out until 25-0 or until Dallas finally gets a Wrestlemania so UT can retire in his home state. They could book some kind of scenario where Taker wins a world title and then gets the MITB case cashed in on him that same night at Mania, so Undertaker would get two victories out of one event.

  26. I think it says something when my favourite part of tonight's RAW was when Brock threw a TV at the WWE logo, breaking it.

    Felt very fitting.

I want them to recreate the WM13 match, except this time Undertaker defecates all over Cena. Like, liquid diarrhea shit.

...Oh, who wins? The WWE Universe, of course.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think the best drama would be in a Cena/Taker I QUIT MATCH.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Do we ever know "for sure" about retirements in wrestling?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Only if Taker does that eyes-rolled-back, tongue-out face. If they're going to tip the nod to the Taker v SID classic, Taker needs to be doing his whole zombie-doing-cunnilingus face when his shit's matting in Cena's hair.

Yeah, but that''ll only be cool if Miz all of a sudden starts aging at a rapid rate until he's dust.

It makes sense for Taker to get tired of the burden. Think about it. As The Undertaker gets older he's around less, because he wants peace. He's been a man of war for over 20 years. He now wants to live a life where he's not constantly looking over his shoulder. The Streak is the ultimate prize in the World of the WWE, and people are going to CONSTANTLY hound him until someone finally does it. Even if he were to retire he'd still have people trying to goad him back into the ring.

I have faith in the E too, they've never screwed up a softball pitch. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to watch Ric Flair vs Hulk Hogan from WrestleMania 8, afterwards I'll relax by watching the entire fantastic WWE vs WCW feud that culminated in a WrestleMania packed with things like The Rock vs Sting, Austin vs Goldberg, and DX vs the nWo.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The one guy I most want to see Lesnar face is Punk. While I do like this whole Team Heyman thing, I'm hopeful it leads to those two squaring off eventually.

Otherwise, how about Lesnar v. Team Hell No? Bryan and Kane working in tandem to take down the unstoppable monster might be fun.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Creative: "Oh ho ho, them's betting words! C'mon guys, we'll show them just how badly we can blow it!"

    ReplyDelete
  36. Taker lands on his head doing his over the top rope dive and the match is called as the Undertaker is wheeled to the back.

    ReplyDelete
  37. But then you don't have the drama of the near falls

    ReplyDelete
  38. It's really unfortunate Taker took WMs 10 and 16 off. He could have had 23 straight Wrestlemanias worth of victories. Instead, he has 21 over 23 years.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Whatever, Christopher Hitchens.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Anything that ends without Undertaker fandangoing away from his last match will be a massive disappointment. .

    ReplyDelete
  41. goddamn it where's that guy who makes the comment of the day official

    ReplyDelete
  42. A great ending would be Cena doing the "I'm sorry, I love you" spot and going for the kill, only for Taker to Chokeslam the shit out of him.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I still don't get why everyone is thinking he's retiring. He was fine against Punk, and as long as he's only working 1-3 matches a year, I could see him stretching the streak to 25-0.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I kinda dig the vampire story, but I wouldn't do it with the Streak. But when he wants to retire, he should challenge Kane to a Casket Match and do the old slasher gimmick of a relative has to beat the monster. Kane wins but goes back to open the casket, and Taker is gone, with just the urn sitting there. Cue spooky Titantron with clips of Taker talking about the spirit of the Undertaker being in all of us. Then Taker comes on and says, "You always were the Undertaker" and show a clip of UT's first appearance where he is called Kane the Undertaker. Kane gets a new black costume and adopts the gimmick.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Because wrestling fans think they should dictate when somebody retires.

Age is probably the most over-discussed topic on the IWC, because it's irrelevant. Either a guy can perform or he can't. DDP had the best matches of his life in his 40s. Shawn Michaels arguably had his best matches in his 40s.

The Undertaker is certainly in the midst of a string of good to great matches. I see no reason for him to retire unless he wants to.

    ReplyDelete
  46. And then Kane immediately passes it on to D. Bry?

    ReplyDelete
  47. No one paid Kane to do their dirty work, either. This is the opposite of vintage Jesse Baker.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Why not Shawn vs. Rock and Brock vs. Batista while we're wishing for things that won't happen?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Even after he retires, I wouldn't be shocked if he showed up to beat up 3MB or something one year. Instead of having Flo Rida do it, I mean.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Totally can't see Bryan doing that gimmick though I think WWE missed the boat on some fun segments where Kane and Taker try to teach him about the darkside.

    "Get in that casket."

    "NO!"

    ReplyDelete
  51. The idea of someone taking on the mantle of "The Undertaker" is a really cool idea. They would have to choose wisely, but it would be cool to see someone pull that off. Like the idea of the Hellspawn in the Spawn comics, where "WWE has to have an Undertaker"

    ReplyDelete
  52. Good point. If he's only working a match or two each year, there's no reason to think he's about to be done.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Best idea I've heard yet. Great tease for Cena to ALMOST end the Streak, but Taker makes him eat his premature words.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Any brainstorm ideas of who he faces at those Wrestlemanias? Maybe Crush at WM10? Ludvig Borga was hurt, or else I'd say Borga vs. Taker.
