Hi Scott
Was the original plan for this event always Shawn/Taker 2?
I remember watching a Raw in the UK late 09 and Taker tombstoned Cena after a match - it seemed they were setting up for that to a lot of people at the time with the break-up of DX being the second big match.
Did plans change when Shawn decided WM26 would be his last match and he wanted his greatest opponent one more time? Or did they just come up with a great idea (careers vs streak) and go with that?
I do vaguely remember it seeming like it was going in the direction you described, but Shawn-Taker was always the plan as far as I know. It was especially jarring with Shawn going from HHH's wacky sidekick to serious challenger to Undertaker's streak, not to mention costing him the World title to Jericho. But we definitely knew a pretty long ways out that Shawn was getting Undertaker.
I'm glad they went with Shawn/Taker 2. I personally like their first match better, but in any case I think this is better than Cena/Taker would've been. Obviously this is my opinion, but I'm happy with how things went down.
ReplyDeleteShawn has since said that he wanted WM25 to be his last, but knew at WM25 that WM26 would definitely be his last. There did seem to be a pattern of him wanting to retire and getting talked into staying so maybe they were trying to talk him out of it. He did cut a promo about needing to beat Undertaker in December so they seemed to have had it in place by then....they really did seem to be heading towards a DX break up though, with the tense conversations and Shawn super-kicking HHH repeatedly.
ReplyDeleteI think the Cena/Undertaker thing was at MSG? Maybe they just did it to gauge crowd reaction or give the MSG crowd something to cheer for.
HONESTLY, WHY BOTHER ASKING KEITH THESE QUESTIONS. HE WAS BARELY A FAN DURING THIS ERA
ReplyDeleteTHREADJACK: Jay Briscoe is an idiot and drags the civilized portion of a great state down to the hillbilly portion of the south.
ReplyDeletewhat happened
ReplyDeleteBecause he has a different opinion than you?
ReplyDeleteHe reviewed all the PPV's around this time.
ReplyDeleteI will shoot anyone that tells my children it's okay to be gay is not an opinion that anyone should defend.
ReplyDeleteI go back and forth on which Shawn/Taker match I like better. Both are great for different reasons. And I think both are better than their excellent 97 work.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on this. Do we need to go as far as to say "I will shoot you"? That's the part that's really stupid in his comment. He's entitled to believe whatever he wants about homosexuality as ignorant as I may find that view, but once he starts talking about killing someone over it, it shows how low class you are.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Dougie (shudders)
ReplyDeleteI figured it was likely I wouldn't agree with Briscoe on much politically (Liberal Canadians nots into the confederate flag) but I thought he was smart enough not TO THREATEN SHOOTING PEOPLE
Gotta disagree with you there. Ground Zero into Badd Blood is maybe the best two match angle ever. People were just frothing at the mouth to see Undertaker murder HBK. And people got exactly what they wanted and HBK still won!
ReplyDeleteFuck that, if someone's opinion is interracial marriage is immoral you don't defend it--gays are no different. Briscoe threatened people for not being ignorant and not wanting the next generation to be ignorant
ReplyDeleteThe build to Shawn-UT at WM 26 is one of my favorites ever.
ReplyDeleteRelevant
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EC7V-ayjorg
What a moron Jay Briscoe is, I'll shoot you if you say it's ok to be different! Backwoods, ignorant views aside, saying you'll shoot somebody for having views that are different from your own goes against a big portion of what America stands for. And Jay wouldn't want his children to be compassionate and accepting of people who are different from them, can't have that.
ReplyDeleteI like how it turned out in reality. Shawn/Taker II was awesome, Cena/Batista was a big, still fresh match that deserved to take place at Wrestlemania, we've still got Cena/Undertaker as the carrot for WM30, plus we were spared another Triple H/Michaels match that stood a 50-50 chance of being boring. Those two guys have had some great matches against each other and just as many stinkers.
ReplyDeleteWell not only did the guy say he was going to shoot people who had said opinion. But when the opinion is wrong, yes he's an idiot. And yes an opinion like this can be 100% wrong. Just like racism, it's wrong to feel that way. When you hate somebody for being different (who isn't hurting anybody) that is wrong, there is no middle ground. I just don't get people who are against gay people and gay marriage, it has nothing to fucking do with you! If you don't like gay marriage, don't marry a gay person, simple. Let the gay people marry, live their lives and leave them the fuck alone. And before somebody points it out, yes, I stole a little bit of that from Jim Jeffries.
ReplyDeleteThat's an awesome video package. I love that song by Placebo.
ReplyDeleteWhy the fuck did HHH wrestle the zombie guy at three god damned wrestlemanias?!! That's what I've been wondering.
ReplyDeleteWonder who called for those matches.....
ReplyDeleteYep. That was at MSG. Same show that elevated Kofi Kingston to main event status when he put Orton through a table with the Boom Drop.
ReplyDeleteEven without the great edited video package, the story alone was great, with characters we cared about, who had clear motivations, in a setting that mattered.
ReplyDeleteA true rarity.
He took his opinion to the extreme, I don't agree with threatening violence. That being said I don't think his opinion on gay marriage makes him homophobic or a bigot (despite how hard the media pushes that commentary). I don't think someone wanting their children to marry someone of the opposite sex and have natural grandchildren is wrong at all. Acting like this guy is an idiot or blew his chance at WWE is both sad and ridiculous. People are entitled to their opinion without being labeled an idiot, homophobic, redneck, etc. Redefining matrimony is pretty big decision for voters, with both negative and positive social consequences. BTW, I personally don't really care about gay marriage I see negatives and positives with it, I despise the way the media, in particular the internet, has tried to portray people with differing opinions.
ReplyDeleteAlso it is pretty sad if gay marriage is federally legal before recreational marijuana use is.
Well, that one was immediately (boom) dropped.
ReplyDeleteYou really should realize that in 20 years, you're going to look as ridiculous as the photos of people protesting integration look today. And it's awesome that you think you being able to get toasted and watch robot chicken is as important as equal rights.
ReplyDeleteFrankly, either everyone should be able to get married, or no one. I really don't see the difference.
ReplyDeleteAs for "traditional" family values, I'm assuming you mean from a Judeo-Christian point of view, because the earth and civilizations are much older than that with a wide ranging variety of "traditions". I for one welcome a return to the Roman tradition of orgies.
Also want to point out that, per the Torch, Briscoe has a history of this. He basically blamed the LGBT community and women for Hurricane Irene. That's just vile.
ReplyDeleteShawn Michaels is in two of my favorite storylines of the past 10 years. Both his feud with Jericho and the sequence with UT from WM25-buidup to 26-WM26 are some of the best storytelling WITH great in ring matches I've ever seen.
ReplyDeleteI didn't say I was against gay marriage, I said I don't think people who disagree with it are idiots or homophobic. They are entitled to that opinion.
ReplyDeletePeople that are against race mixing are entitled to their own opinions also. They just happen to be racist and idiotic opinions.
ReplyDeleteUgh, I knew he was a redneck--but i figured his character was that part of himself played up 1000% like Austin or McMahon not the other way around were the guy on TV is LESS nuts, that hurricane stuff is a special kind of crazy
ReplyDeleteThat would be impossible in terms of physics.
ReplyDeleteIt was more saying they deserved a hurricane because of their behavior. Terribly ignorant and like you said, vile.
He has opinions and is entitled to them, but he is a full-on homophobe.
ReplyDeleteCheck out these tweets from him:Damn theres a
lot of fags out in New York today #whatthefuck (June 26, 2011)
To all da hoes, sluts, skanks, he-shes, she-hes and homos that be
whorin it up on da eastcoast… this hurricanes for you (August 27,
2011)
"Redefining matrimony is a pretty big decision for voters"
ReplyDeleteSo was ending Segregation. Doesn't make people who defended it any less of bigots
He threatened to SHOOT people who told his kids gays are ok people--What part of that ISN'T homophobic exactly
ReplyDelete. I don't think someone wanting their children to marry someone of the opposite sex and have natural grandchildren is wrong at all.
ReplyDeleteBut that's not what he's saying - he point-blank said that he doesn't want kids to learn to acknowledge that gay men and women are not "unacceptable" in and of themselves. Are you suggesting that, per "traditional" values, his son should only marry a virgin?
I think it's a mix of both: besides the slut-shaming ("hoes"), he's blasting trans men and women just for being.
ReplyDeleteAnd let's not forget Homosexuality was out in the open in Greece WAY before Christianity was even a thing.
ReplyDeleteYou should probably stop digging.
ReplyDeleteIf the crowd starts a "Jay is Gay" chant (or something of that ilk) at BitW I'll love them forever. Unfortunately the show is in Baltimore, and that crowd has proved less creative then say, New York
ReplyDeleteGay Marriage has been legal in Canada for ages now, I wish this had broke BEFORE the next 4 weeks of TV were taped--a good portion of the crowd would have been heckling him for this, instead it's gonna look like it had no effect on his popularity since everyone is up on their feet and cheering like always (myself included sadly)
Pat Robertson, who has millions of TV veiwers every time he's on the air, frequently says that Hurricanes and other natural disasters are god punishing gays
ReplyDeleteMaybe ROH is just setting up a redemption angle where Mark comes out of the closet and Jay learns to see past his prejudices and love his brother unconditionally for who he is. Or, maybe they're trying to bait Jason Collins into a celeb match at Final Battle.
ReplyDeleteWhere is Adam Curry to Chime in on ROH's most recent logistical headache
ReplyDeletePolygamy certainly should be legal in that case. I would love to have 3 or 4 wives helping me pay the bills.
ReplyDeleteso, uh, what happened?
ReplyDeleteAgreed.
ReplyDeleteOK, I've officially lost track of your argument it's so incoherent. are you risking your freedom for your civil liberty to get baked right now or something
ReplyDelete(for the record, I AGREE that Marijuana should be legalized)
And in the real world--Jay beats Mark--Kicks him in Nuts, turns heel, and drops the title to Elgin at the soonest opportunity so the company can bury this under a rig as quickly as possible. None of that has anything to do with how I feel about Jay's comments, I honestly think this is TANKING whatever drawing ability the guy had
ReplyDeleteA: Fuck Twitter.
ReplyDeleteB: Jay Briscoe is a fucking backwoods hick moron, though let's not pretend like he's the only person (in wrestling or otherwise) that feels that way.
C: I said from day one that he should have never been world champ in the first place.
That's really all I have to say on the subject.
There certainly was no shortage of people commenting on it :p
ReplyDeleteA: Fuck Yeah!!!
ReplyDeleteB:I know, I figure Shawn Michaels likely feels that way and he's my favorite ever. I guess I'm just disappointed Jay was stupid enough to put this shit on Twitter. Plus suspecting and knowing is very different--I'm pretty sure Shawn would be anti-gay but I have no reason to beleive he is a "Gays cause huricanes guy" (now some prick will give me a link and ruin that) which is the worst revelation from this whole thing to me
C:at soonest opportunity--"AND NEW RING OF HONOR WORLD CHAMPION, MICHEAL ELGIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" problem solved--Run Steen vs Elgin 2 in august at Maple Leaf Gardens
I think the original plan was Miz-Taker. May be wrong, though.
ReplyDeleteUh...what happened?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.towleroad.com/2013/05/briscoe.html
ReplyDeleteThat's such a big match they felt the need to save it for WM XXX
ReplyDeleteAre we sure this isn't just Jay being a heel or playing his character up?
ReplyDeleteHe was a face that entire time, and now he is the BABYFACE champion who is touted as the man who brought "Honor" back to ROH--He deleted those tweets when they happened and pulled his whole account down after this--that isn't a work
ReplyDelete19 of 58 comments aren't part of the thread jack
ReplyDeleteThat was some impressive Jacking Dougie
He went on a rant on Twatter about how gay marriage is wrong and all that B.S., which isn't really a big deal, everyone is entitled to their opinion. But then he crossed the line by saying something along the lines of "If you try to bring it around my kids I'll shoot you".
ReplyDeleteHe has since issued a really half-assed apology and deleted his entire account. Check any of the newz sitez if you want more details.
and I'd say the old tweets that are coming out are WAY worse then what he said just recently
ReplyDeleteI've just always felt HITC to be overrated. Still a good match, but I find their work at 25 and 26 much more satisfying. The 97 stuff was still cool, of course, and had a red-hot angle.
ReplyDeleteI take it that was his personal account, not the WWE/TNA mandated style deal? I'm just curious what ROH does about it. Nothing? Get the title off as quickly as possible but never mention the controversy? Fire him? I know one thing, he can now forget about ever working for the WWE after this.
ReplyDeleteunfortunately the company is handcuffed for 5 weeks, no new televised or PPV shows till then, and at the first new show he is fighting HIS BROTHER. It's a mess because of where this fell in the taping schedule...they could have him drop it at the house show this weekend to Davey, but that's a tad extreme and FUCKING DAMMIT DAVEY AS CHAMPION FUCKING BLOWS! Besides, would Davey agree to a lame duck title reign of like 2 months just to job to Elgin and give him his win back from the match Meltzer gave 5 stars, If so it wouldn't be the worst thing they could do i guess.
ReplyDeleteVery much impressed by the level of thought here. I remember seeing this at a WRESTLINGSCOOPZNEWZ and being pretty disappointed with what people were saying. People still want to act like sexuality is like choosing a flavor of ice cream... "Rarr. Why is it okay to speak up for vanilla but it's not okay to stand up against it in a respectful way?" It's not like choosing ice cream. It's not even choosing religion. It's not a choice. Standing up against homosexuality is no different than standing up against being Italian, Polish, Filipino, Indian, etc. This is obvious to many, but not so obvious to some.
ReplyDeleteAnd another thing people want to bring up is...another topic. No, bringing up gun control, religion, or 9/11 has nothing to do with this topic. If you feel Christians have been bashed too much, fine, but it's not the time and place to discuss it.
Kudos to the BoD.
I gave him an upvote for correctly pointing out what a dumb hillbilly Jay Briscoe is. Dougie has won my heart.
ReplyDeleteThe thing is what he is saying is homophobic, is it even in question that between this and his other tweets aren't homophobic? And yes, he is allowed to have his opinions, that's his right but that doesn't mean he's in anyway right. And when you have bigoted, homophobic, idiotic comments he is going to be labeled as such. By the way, why can't gay people have traditional family values? Is traditional family values just a straight thing. I have a friend I've known since high who is gay and now has a partner and they just recently adopted a two year old. That family is just as normal and happy as any other of my married friends, maybe more. I also don't see why gay marriage is a big deal to voters or how it would affect straight people in anyway. By the way, you said you can see positive and negatives when it comes to gay marriage. What are the negatives exactly? And when I have children, I wouldn't care if they were straight or gay. As long as they lived happy, full lives. And hopefully, by the time my children are the age I am now they look back at this whole issue like I look back at people who were against civil rights.
ReplyDeleteThat's why I love this place, people are kind and intelligent--almost every other wrestling site I've visited has a comments section that embarrases me to be a fan, RSPWFAQ.com makes me proud of wrestling and my passion for it!!
ReplyDeleteas one of the top comments below the videos says: "this is why I watch wrestling."
ReplyDeleteShooting someone for being gay is indefensible.
ReplyDeleteArguing that being gay is immoral IS defensible, if your basis for morality is The Holy Bible. There are umpteen pages devoted to God's supposed position on the matter.
I'm aware. I don't like Kate Bush and prefer this cover.
ReplyDeleteMy 2 cents on the brisco threadjack; I should be a Republican cuz of my taxes but I won't and one big reason why is a really support gay marriage. But I never think anyone should get in trouble for expression of opinion
ReplyDeletePeople say crazy shit online all the time though.
ReplyDeleteSupporting the 1st amendment is equally as important as supporting gay rights though. And the more you disagree with an opinion the more you should support someone's rights to say it
ReplyDeleteI believe a person is born with a particular sexual orientation, be it heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, or asexual. The more we study it and the more technology advances in penetrating the wonders of the brain, the more we can trace reflective behaviors and physiological signs at younger and younger ages.
ReplyDeleteFreedom of expression is not freedom from consequences
ReplyDeleteI think it works like this. The first ammendment gives you the right to say anything about anything, how ever you want to. Aside from that, all citizens shall be treated equally. So, you can bitch about gay marriage, say it's an abomination (if you so believe), etc; but, gay people deserve equality.
ReplyDeleteYikes. Way to make your company look world-caliber and legitimate Jay.
ReplyDeleteEveryone deserves equality. And gay people should certainly be able to get married. But a guy who comes out and says its gross or whatever should not lose his job etc. People who start rallying for someone to be fired or depushed or whatever based on their opinions scare the shit out of me. I think thats being equally as closed minded as the homophobic guy.
ReplyDeleteDitto, as much as we disagree about wrasslin' on here, I think most of us are pretty decent and respectable people with reasonable views.
ReplyDeleteDepends what those consequences are. This guy should 100% not lose his career or spot over these comments. All he did was give his opinion. People think its bad, ok. Tell him that. But when people start saying you should lose your job etc for stating opinion thats a scary thing. The more you disagree with something the more you should support someones right to say it
ReplyDeleteThis was one of the best southpark endings ever. God I love that fucking show
ReplyDeleteIf this gets any kind of mainstream burn they should build up a gay babyface and use this as an angle.
ReplyDeleteHate it all you like, just acknowledge that it's not Placebo's song.
ReplyDeleteWhat are you talking about? A private company can punish their employees how they see fit. If wrestling company A doesn't want their employees to talk about green people marrying purple people, employees have the choice to talk about it and lose their jobs or not talk about it and keep their jobs. Sometimes it's silly, but hey, it's not my company and company owners also have the 1st ammendment right to create an image they want.
ReplyDeleteI think that is a reasonable opinion. People should be able to say what they want as an individual and express their viewpoint.
ReplyDeleteI'm certainly going to look at him like less of a person for the particular viewpoint he holds, but him getting in trouble or not should probably be dictated by the policy at the company he works for -- if in fact his Twitter account falls within the bounds of his workplace activities.
He's probably not going to win a lot of fans in the court of public opinion on the matter now in these parts.
I believe that you can change your behavior if compelled to do so. You cannot change your race under any circumstances.
ReplyDeleteFlair, you're a Raw GM here, any chance we can try to have a post with a definitive best pre-match video promo post? The BoD has touched on it a few times, but it would be pretty cool to build a list of links to the best promo packages of all time because I know I have forgotten some over the years.
ReplyDeleteRock-Austin WM17, HBK-HHH the SummerFest02, HBK-Taker WM26, Hart-McMahon WM26 (awesome video, bad match), Armageddon 2000, CM Punk MitB's "Do I have everyone's attention now?", and even some of the Rock-Cena ones (under the same Hart-McMahon principle)...just to name a few off the top of my head.
Of course, the list would have to change ever couple of months because of WWE taking the videos down.
I thought I already did...
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if threatening to shoot people (like he said on twitter) should be supported. Threats and hate speech are a different animal.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun idea. This is more Caliber's territory. Copy/paste your post and e-mail him. He'll take care of it.
ReplyDeleteOnly because I called you out on it.
ReplyDeleteI prefer Disturbed's cover of Land of Confusion, but I would never refer to it as their song.
I can see valid arguments on both sides in terms of the specific analogy used, but that alone is sort of an ancillary issue I think and mostly one dependent on semantics and how you want to define certain words.
ReplyDeletePersonally, even if a person could "choose to behave in a homosexual lifestyle" (or a heterosexual lifestyle) I don't think that really changes the issue in terms of gay rights and gay marriage.
I'm talking about how freedom of speech should be more important to people. Many of these private companies fire someone based on public outcry to do so. When people start clamoring for someone to be fired because they said something (not related to their job) they find offensive and then the company caves and the person loses their career I find that equally as disgusting and even more frightening than gay marriage is banned based on appealing to peoples ignorant beliefs. For instance a company can't fire someone for being too fat etc (most jobs, theres exceptions to every rule) and I think its just as bad when they fire someone for having a (dumb) opinion expressed on personal social media
ReplyDeleteYeah, I definitely don't think what he said should be supported, just the right he has to say it. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets himself in hot water with his company over it though, seeing as he already deleted the account.
ReplyDeleteFine, but I was on my phone on the highway and didn't really want to type too much...shouldn't of been typing at all actually.
ReplyDeleteThe best thing to do would be to abolish marriage altogether. Let people engage in contracts with one another in any way they see fit.
ReplyDeleteYeah exactly. I think he's a moron for saying that but it has nothing to do with his job, so I would be sad if he lost for saying that.
ReplyDeleteI'll give you an extreme analogy.
ReplyDeleteI own a company and have a good worker who's also a nazi skinhead who runs a hate website and posts hate messages on twitter. He has the right to believe what he wants, but I have the right to fire him.
Plus, hate to say it, but no one really knows what ROH is, much less who Jay Briscoe is. I just hate seeing people foaming at the mouth for someone to get fired over something stupid they said.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's where he fucked up.
ReplyDeleteI'd sign that deal any day.
ReplyDeleteI remember reading a piece once where the author described the ideal "marriage" contract as being similar to how sports teams deal with free-agents. You sign a multi-year contract with an "option to terminate" window and then once your deal is up, you re-negotiate your terms and re-sign or move on. Was supposed to be funny, but I kinda like the idea lol
Well he didn't say he was going to shoot anyone in particular. And saying gays are gross/shouldn't get married etc (I haven't seen the comments, I just read Curry's summary of it) isn't hate speech.
ReplyDeleteIf only DISQUS recorded your GPS info, I fould have you arrested for that!
ReplyDeleteGenerally speaking a lot of parents would like their children to carry on their family name and bloodline. That's great that some people are OK without their kids doing that, but don't hate on someone for wanting to carry on a family legacy. I also love how in this thread how we can bash Christian views and Christians with no issue but the second someone even slightly says something anti-gay marriage everyone is up in arms.
ReplyDeleteIt's not illegal in Florida...yet.
ReplyDeleteHE SAID HE WOULD SHOOT ANYONE WHO WOULD PREACH THAT KIND OF TOMFOOLERY TO HIS CHILDREN. IT'S A LIIIIIIIIIIIL BIT MORE THAN JUST EXPRESSING YOUR OPINION
ReplyDeleteTHE FUNNY THING IS THAT EVERYONE HERE FEELS THE NEED TO EXPRESS THEIR OPINION ABOUT THIS MATTER
ReplyDeleteAND THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT!
ReplyDeleteJUST DON'T SHOOT ANYBODY, MOTHERFUCKER!
ReplyDeleteBut the behavior is just a reflection of who you are... it doesn't change someone's sexual orientation. It may change their outside "sexuality," but not their sexual orientation.
ReplyDeleteI grew up with a gay cousin and a gay uncle (not a parent of the cousin, obviously). The cousin is about a year older than me (he goes to Catholic church and is a card carrying Republican--go figure), but most everyone knew he was gay from a very early age. There was no changing this. I could tell he was different by 6 or 7 years old. He still had difficulties "coming out" until about age 24, but we all knew and understood for years and years.
This is not a choice. This is not an addiction. This is not a predisposition only. This is who they are. People are going to have to recalibrate what they believe and know to be true about this subject.
I have some old friends that live "off the grid" in Southern Oregon on a farm and they have quite the convoluted relationship arrangement -- sort of a love-traingle of sorts I guess you would call it. They all live together, work on the farm, raise the kids, and seem to have a happy little family.
ReplyDeleteIs he? I'm not familiar with the non-wrestling bits of the company. Like Phred said (Right Said Phred?), it depends on how much attention it gets. If ESPN or one of the major news channels picks up on it you can bet your ass he'll be gone.
ReplyDelete"Card is subject to change." As for the TV shows, none of them have aired yet, so there's still time to edit them however they need to.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter. You CAN not have sex with someone. You CANNOT become a different race.
ReplyDeleteThe former is a choice. The latter cannot be chosen. That makes the matters fundamentally different.
Are they publicly traded?
ReplyDeleteObviously under the law you could. But I think its wrong. Lets say you owned a small company and had a flamboyantly gay employee who had super extreme gay websites he ran. (lets say a site advocating violence agaisnt/or separation from people who don't supports gays) Does he keep his job? I just think in the age of the internet we need to support speech even more than ever. You could get secretly recorded on a cell phone going on a tirade and have it posted online. You could make an off the cuff joke on twitter and the word could see it. I just think its scary when people are strictly punished for beliefs
ReplyDeleteSupposedly, talk at the time was that Taker, Triple H, and Shawn were each given pet projects with rookies, namely Drew, Sheamus, and Miz respectively.
ReplyDeleteTaker basically dropped the idea of working with Drew (which is why he was thrown into that MITB match at the last minute), Triple H ended up feuding with Sheamus, and Shawn just had a random tag match against the Miz.
I heard this on a random podcast, so take that for what it's worth.
Well said.
ReplyDeletePlus I think that in reality, people are kind of all over the spectrum too, at least in terms of behavior if not actual orientation. For that reason alone, I think arguing against gay rights on the basis of how people behave is missing the point (not that zanadude is doing that, but in general) because people sometimes act in ways at times not consistent with their sexual orientation. Some people would call those folks true-blue bisexuals, but truthfully I think there is probably a bit of a gap between orientation and behavior.
Well I think its obvious that its just stupid hyperbole, that can be twisted as hate speech. If threatens to shoot an actual person specifically theres already laws on the books to protect from that.
ReplyDeleteI think you're confusing hate speech based on someone else's race, sexual orientation or religion vs. behavior not condoned by religion. They're not the same thing, not even in front of the law.
ReplyDeleteI only gave mine because someone asked for it.
ReplyDeleteOh god kate bush fucking stinks
ReplyDeleteI've known several women who became lesbians after abusive relationships with men.
ReplyDeleteI DIDN'T ASK YOU TO EXPLAIN YOURSELF, CURRY.
ReplyDeleteHAHA J/K J/K JUST BUSTIN' YOUR CHOPS!
Threadjack: Awesome podcast with Austin and Nash.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.podcastone.com/f/Steve-Austin-Show
Many strong and valid points, Jobber. I am just not sure it 100% applies here with the shooting threats while being a public figure from this Brisco fella. If his hate speech hurts business, then he should be fired.
ReplyDeleteBut what happened to intelligence? I'm a teacher. I use an alias online because I'm a quasi-public figure who is essentially employed by the government. And I don't want some wrestling argument where I say something stupid or show preferences to religion/politics biting me in the ass later on. Now, I teach minors, so there's differences in my comparison, but I wish people would be smarter.
Correlation vs causation would definitely have to come into that discussion. You could certainly arrive at a conclusion based on lots of different hypothesis there.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I don't think there is any question that his record of personal judgment is not exactly stellar haha
ReplyDeleteDude thats kinda brilliant
ReplyDeleteThis hits slightly close to home for me. I'm a manager at a commodites broker firm. A few years ago I tweeted the young jeezy rap lyrics "these niggaz is jokerz/what they spent on their re-up I spent up in Strokers" with a pic of me in a strip club with some strippers and a bunch of bottles of booze and champange. I had to delete my account and attend racial sensitivity training to keep my job because I used "the n-word" It was insane. So I understand how crazy this shit can be
ReplyDeleteCompanies have whatever standards they wish to employe. Abide by them or open your own company and create your own standards. Still, very different from hate speech.
ReplyDeleteThey can. But people who call for someone (ex. jay brisoce/tracy morgan/don imus) to be fired by that company(that don't even work there) because they don't like what they said are just as ignorant and close minded as a homophobe. My personal example is just to show how stupid it can get
ReplyDeleteThe saddest part about all this that it probably won't even get ROH any heat
ReplyDeleteOh, I agree with that. Let the people that run the company decide who works there or doesn't. The rallying of the masses with pitchforks and fire torches is annoying to me, but funny because it always reminds me of The Simpsons and how they all create a mob in a blink.
ReplyDeletewhy does this have 3 downvotes...oh yeah cuz dougie has 3 accounts!
ReplyDeletelol that you don't understand the importance of the government imprisoning people and ruining their lives to maintain a prison industrial complex. The militarized war on drugs against american citizens is one of the most evil things our government does
ReplyDeletePlacebo in general is pretty great.
ReplyDeleteIts sad both are illegal but at least the government doesn't fight a militarized war against gay citizens
ReplyDeleteI got here late. What does WrestleMania 26 have to do with gay men?
ReplyDeleteI don't care what anyone says, the Longest Yard remake was worth it just for Nash and Austin alone. It's too bad Nash's height probably holds him back from doing more movies, especially comedies. He could be the older guys' Jason Segel.
ReplyDeleteFuck Pat Robertson. Just saying...
ReplyDeleteI vaguely remember Shawn trying to work with some younger guys like Miz and Sheamus on Raw and house shows during what he knew would be his last few months. It was more to help them get the experience since it'd be their only / last chance to work with him.
ReplyDeleteDon't compare him to Jason Segel. Doesn't Nash get enough shit on this board?
ReplyDeleteBlasphemy, Jason Segel is awesome.
ReplyDeleteIf Shawn had been willing delay retirement til the following year, I think the card could have worked with something like this:
ReplyDeleteCena vs. Batista
Edge vs. Jericho
Bret/Shawn/Kidd/Smith vs. Vince/HHH/McIntyre/Shane
Taker vs. Sheamus
Sheamus can challenge Taker after losing his title in EC without being pinned and get to look strong making a go at Taker. The Harts and McIntyre can rub elbows with some of the biggest stars of all time and all come better known since Vince is taking the fall in that one anyway.
"Also it is pretty sad if gay marriage is federally legal before recreational marijuana use is."
ReplyDeleteIdiotic shit like that is a big part of why marijuana isn't legal. We've got morons like you making the rest of us look bad.
The crazy thing is Jay could just make this all go away with four simple words: Someone hacked my twitter.
ReplyDeleteYou need to chill back on that. I was comparing 2 issues - "idiotic shit" is a bit extreme.
ReplyDeleteFair enough. I've had a rough fucking day, I was a bit harsh there.
ReplyDeleteWhat *doesn't* it?
ReplyDeleteIf you go to prison for smoking weed, you either live in a really shitty state or have an awful fucking lawyer.
ReplyDeleteFair enough, I've obviously taken a bit of an unpopular stance playing devil's advocate with this Jay Briscoe thing.
ReplyDeleteUgh. This thread has reminded me how much I hate weed infants. Any time you bring up something horrible, they can't help but be all 'yeah that sucks but I can't smoke weed!' Seriously, get your little pacifier and shut up. I wish it was legal just so I can stop hearing about how evil the world is because the man keeps you from getting mellow.
ReplyDelete"I have to get a drink of water, take a walk and a piss just from reading all of your accolades!"
ReplyDelete"Yeah, that's what happens when you hold the pencil for half of your career"
LOL
WTF are you talking about?
ReplyDeleteI seriously dont understand why people ask scott these kinds of questions. He's not an insider, everything he "knows" is from 3rd hand info at best (maybe even worse cuz he's likely going from memory of something he's read about what someone else heard).
ReplyDeleteHe's just a columnist-a funny columnist-i prefer questions about his opinion concerning wrestling history. Asking for the "inside scoop" from Scott Kieth of all people is dumb as hell.
Didn't you say that the working out thread was gay a couple of days ago?
ReplyDeletedefinitely.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if Shawn is virulently homophobic either, but his Pastor John Hagge sure is. In that he is the guy that implied that the gays in New Orleans caused Hurricane Katrina.
ReplyDeleteNo clue.
ReplyDeleteWait, what does this have to do with Jay Briscoe and gay people? I'm confused now.
ReplyDeleteWhat's your take on the whole Briscoe thing?
ReplyDeleteI'm just shocked that a wrestler would say something stupid on Twitter. It's so unprecedented.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if a gay wrestler could get over as a face in front of a wrestling crowd. Though ROH would probably be the best place to try it. given that they run something like 90% of their shows in the Northeast. I just don't see how you would book it. Do they bring in a new guy and push him and we're just supposed to cheer for him because he's gay? That won't work. Finding a guy that would be willing to play the role would be a challenge too.
ReplyDeleteIf I recall correctly, Scott is or was friends with people on the creative team so it's not like he's completely in the dark on these things.
ReplyDeleteI hear that. He kind of reminds me of RVD and Swagger, as in doing something totally stupid when you're in the middle of the biggest push of your life. And as far as stupid goes, he takes the gold medal.
ReplyDeleteJay and Mark are married. That's why they share the same last name, right?
ReplyDeleteYou're taking it like a man though, and I agree with some of the stuff you said, I up-voted the comment you made about polygamy.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how far back we're talking about things being planned, but didn't Shawn challenge Taker at the Slammys in December when picking up the award for match of the year? So things look to have been pretty locked 4 months out.
ReplyDeleteI vaguely remember Steen saying some pro-gay things back during that work where he hit the "fan". I have to wonder how Briscoe's peers are taking this
ReplyDeleteI wonder too. though I would have to think that he's not shy about it backstage. I doubt anyone in the ROH locker room will be surprised by this.
ReplyDeleteROH just posted Jay's punishment on facebook.
ReplyDelete2 shows pay ddonated to an anti hate group and an in ring apology on Saturday
The comments on it make me sad--it seems like the most ardent defenders of the first amendment are those who dont understand how it works
His obvious troll language aside, it's clear what he's talking about if you read the thread
ReplyDelete...Shawn DID pose for playgirl
ReplyDeleteSorry, wasn't trying to drag you in to something you were staying out of.
ReplyDeleteExcept being champ is all about drawing $$$. This hurts Jay's drawing ability and he is therefore no longer qualified for the top spot
ReplyDeleteI am disappointed in Jay but it didn't make me angry.
ReplyDeletePeople not understanding the 1st amendment/PRAISING JAY FOR HIS COURAGE made me angry.
Regardless of what's right or wrong, Briscoe as champ isn't good for business at this point
It's alright, it was going to come up at some point. After all, I review it.
ReplyDeleteIt's the internet, the comments on most websites about anything make me weep for humanity.
ReplyDelete"I never told you this, but I did a spread for Playgirl when I was in college. And I mean SPREAD, I pulled apart my buttcheeks apart and everything."
ReplyDeleteSteve is a surprisingly STRONG interviewer.
ReplyDeleteI fully agree. Its like Doug Stanhope says "If society didn't pressure you into marriage, would you ever think of it on your own? 'Baby I love you so much, we need to get the government in on this shit!'"
ReplyDeleteThis would be the same Dougie who once claimed all black people participate in dogfighting. His opinions are as flexible as he needs them to be for maximum trolling.
ReplyDeleteYou should go to a doctor, there's something wrong with your eardrums if you like Disturbed.
ReplyDeleteYep, or at least afaik.
ReplyDeleteSince this thread is really about Jay Briscoe, here my take. I'm fully not surprised. Not just because of the prior Tweets, he's proven to be a narrow minded redneck before. He talked about hating "camel fuckers" on AOW before, and he wore Confederate flag motifs for years. So he's just generally a dink (although oddly enough, always touted by other wrestlers as being very intelligent, so its not even something you could blame on being a backwoods hick who doesn't know any better). Will most ROH fans turn on him for it? Maybe not. A while ago ROH put on their Facebook "Finish the sentence: The Briscoes are..." and about half the comments were something like "racist shitbags". So obviously that sentiment is out there, but some people are willing to overlook it due to his in ring talent.
ReplyDeleteI'M BAKING A LEMON INSIDE YOU!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6KXgjLqSTg
I read it 4 times and got something about weed or something.
ReplyDeleteAll you have to do is say you love really thin pancakes...
ReplyDeleteWell, if shareholders start bitching then Jay can kiss his ass goodbye.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.freewebs.com/wrestlinglists/archives.htm
ReplyDeleteThat's Scott's entire archive through the first of the year, though all the .com links don't work.
Why should he apologize. Its his opinion.
ReplyDeleteBecause his carrers fucked if he doesn't
ReplyDeleteHe is happily married to a women with child for what that's worth. I think he's just pro gay and likes Fucking with homophobes. Jacobs Character is SUPER GAY and I'm pretty sure it's just an act
ReplyDeleteWhy? Because he has an opinion. Is he changing his mind? Do you really feel better getting a fake apology? And will his career of wrestling in vfws and high school gyms really be impacted?
ReplyDeleteI coold care less about an apology, but unless Jay shows Sinclair he can play company man it's too dangerous to keep the belbelt on him
ReplyDeleteAfter they stole the show at Wrestlemania 25, I'm guessing they pretty quickly decided to do the re-match
ReplyDeletemaybe they have been attracted to some women all along but just never chose to pursue a relationship?
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you're stupid.
