Xbox One

Speaking of "new presentations" (and I'll get razzed here for the threadjack), but has anyone seen the info of the Nexbox, or Xbox One? Seems like everything you never wanted in a game system, they threw in there.

God, the new Xbox.  The “play used games for a fee” thing is so obnoxious, as is the constant internet connection requirement, likely to keep ads flowing as it is now.  Using it as a cable box is useless in Canada because there is no over the air coverage up here unless you’re near the border, and most of the “added value” entertainment crap on Live Gold isn’t available due to geographic restrictions anyway.  I really soured on Microsoft’s service in the past few months and don’t regret switching to the PS3 at all.  It’s a better streaming box, plays Blu-Rays, and I don’t have to buy new batteries for the controller all the time.  Plus it’s my CHOICE to pay for PS Plus, and I get free games out of it!  Microsoft raises the price for Gold in both Canada and the US and justifies it with all the great stuff you get as a member…in the US.  Plus when I’m buying physical media and not just downloading it off the PS Store, I’m getting it from sites like jjgames.com, not buying new games for $60 a piece.  I love God of War, but fuck them if they think I’m ever paying more than $20 for a game now.  I can wait it out.

Anyway, not an endorsement for Sony’s new vaporware system here or anything, but that Xbox thing really rubbed me the wrong way.  Plus it looks like a VCR you’d buy at Sears in 1987.

Comments

  1. To VCRs and the year 1987? Yes, but not Sears. They got everything they deserved and more.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Oh no, just once every 24 hours, that's not inconvenient AT ALL, especially for people that can't get or afford decent internet in the first place. 9_9

    ReplyDelete
  3. XBox One. Common Fucking Sense: ZERO.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Didn't say it wasn't inconvenient, but Scott's claim that it needs a constant internet connection needed correcting.

The biggest fuck you is that it wont play 360 games. Better not sell it to finance your purchase! Might as well stop buying xbla games too, why bother at this point if they wont even carry over?

    Jumping out.

    ReplyDelete
  6. So basically you can't even give your XBox One games away? Reminds me of Homer trying to tip a bellboy with his Grammy.

    Here kid!
Wow!, a next generation videogame! Awww it's an XBox One title!

  7. I don't know if it's a graphics ceiling they've hit or something, but nothing about the next-gen consoles -- WiiU included -- have shown a compelling reason to shell an absurd amount of money when there doesn't seem to be a significant leap over we already have. If it's not going to be the usual generational leap forward graphically, then they better have an ace in the hole in terms of gaming, but I have yet to see it (on-the-fly video sharing = meh). Nintendo's learning the hard way right now that if you don't have a reason to buy one out of the gate, not many will.

Hopefully, there's some big news coming out of E3 that will change my mind. If not, I'll happily keep on playing The Show and Ni No Kuni this year.

  8. I'm just gunna be a fat fucking mark and say:

I can't wait to see the next gen wrestling games.

    ReplyDelete
  9. The Ex-Vikings punter Cheis Kwule posted something funny about this. He said they should have called it Xbox Pi, "because it's the third one and saying you don't own the games you bought is quite irrational."

    ReplyDelete
  10. Did Microsoft hire a McMahon? Lousy unveil. HAVING to dl games to hd is stupid, external HD use or not. Depending on games, you could be maxed at 10 games, not to mention all the other crap dlc plus entertainment stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  11. They've said that the extra content and cable box stuff is being prepared for over 30 countries this time. They are apparently striking deals all over the world so as to avoid the sort fo problem Scott mentioned. As a fellow Canadian I too know the pain of having a third of the apps and extras that the American XBL users got. But, if Canada is included in the cable/satellite DVR stuff, and all of the extra features are available right out of the box, I gotta say I'm intrigued.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills sometimes whenever I'm on the internet and reading comments and blog posts like these, but I really do use my consoles for much more than games. Hell, I watched the unveiling itself on my Xbox.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The XBLA games not jumping over as well is rather confusing to me as you'd think that would be one thing for certain that would follow over from the 360.

But I guess this is the video game industry, where if you can get someone to rebuy something then it's a good thing.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Is there anything it can do that my ps3/laptop combo can't? Also, those have the added feature of me already having them.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Have there been any really good wrestling games for the current generation? The Smackdown games feel broken to me, as I hate seeing someone fall off a Hell In A Cell and bounce back up as if nothing happened. It's a total cliche to say but I really don't feel like any wrestling games (that I've played, anyway) have gotten it right since No Mercy.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The closest that's come to the overall goodness of No Mercy is WWE '13.

The sheer customisation adds an incredible amount of joy to the game, for me, at least. Love creating me and my pals, and my own arenas.

The gameplay's improved, too. Sure, there's still some errors which are annoying, but I like to think they're (finally) going in the right direction.

Teaming up with 2K Sports can only be a good thing. I've heard their games are generally pretty polished.

Also, you'll have a blast doing the Attitude Era mode, where you go back and recreate scenes from 97-99.

    I'd recommend it.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Is it just me, or is there the realistic possibility of another crash of the video game market... maybe not as bad as the early-80's crash, but enough to really slow down new development.

If so, all I can say is that the idiots brought it upon themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The Smackdowns, despite the occassional BS (like my infamous job attempt while holding the IC title... it's a funny story), were quite good up until around the ECW-featured one. Or was it the one before that?...

    ReplyDelete
  18. I skipped out on the last generation so I was hoping the new systems would be backwards compatible so I could play all the games I missed out on.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I get a shout-out! Yay! *does the Orton pose, gets showered with boos*

    So. This console:
    - Expects me to hit the internet once a day to play games.
    - Will not work without Kinect, though it's boxed separately.
    - Thinks I'll be parked in front of my TV all day.
    - Wants me to pay a fee for a used game, and will give me 500GB of storage space to mandatory install all games. Oh, and games have to be linked to an XBL account.
    - Tells the 360 to perform an anatomical impossibility.
    - Requires Kinect to "always listen" (no, that's not intrusive at all, no).

    What they HAVEN'T said:
    - Rumored two SKUs - one for $500, the other for $300 (I think), and the cheaper one requires a $10, 2-year monthly subscription to XBL.
    - When it will be released.

At least the controller looks cool. Everything else? Perform that anatomical impossibility, Xbox One. I'll keep my money.

    ReplyDelete
  20. There's a huge shift going on in gaming right now - mobile platforms have allowed people to play games for free or $1, and remove ads for like $1 more. And some can be quick to play, and others (like "Wrestling Revolution") will melt your battery quicker than a Ryder match.

What game companies are trying to do is not make their model more affordable, but squeeze every penny out of the base that's already here. Devs are shutting their doors left and right, and companies that refuse to adapt are being outed for the dinosaurs they are.

I truly believe the Wii U tried to bridge the gap between iOS/Android and consoles, but it's just not working. So what will happen is eventually the loyal base will realize there's no new blood in these consoles (since everything is sequeled to death) and they'll start not buying consoles. Not completely, but just enough for console companies to keep squeezing, and then it ends up being a circle-drain.

It won't be like the early 80s, but it'll be pretty bad.

    ReplyDelete
  21. So glad I don't work for Gamestop anymore. The amouny of blind fan-boyism was bad enough, but hearing people attempt to defend this new crop of crap would be too much.

No Microsoft (and Sony), I'll stick to what I have now, thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  22. See, all I want is a Wii with better graphics, a wii-like platform that has good boxing and tennis games (the system is practically made for those games, but they were never really made), and NBA2K or WWE games that have lots of downloadable content (from other users). Any chance that this will be a possibility with next gen consoles?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Funny, at my local GameStop the general consensus of the employees is "this is gonna suck HARD".

    ReplyDelete
  24. Agree to disagree. I worked at Sears once, as retailers go they were....OK.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Trust me, if I still worked there that would be my sentiment. I'm just glad to not go through another console gen. The Wii/Ps3 launches were so hilariously miserable that I can only imagine what the next batch will be like.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I agree that the new X-Box is ugly, but really, who gives a shit as long as it works? The original X-Box might be the ugliest system ever, but it didn't stop me from buying one.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Maybe not a crash, but certainly a recession of sorts. And I'd say we're there already, with a lot of smaller dev houses (and even some bigger ones like THQ) shutting down and lots of layoffs coming. Add that to the Wii-U basically being D.O.A. (EA said recently that they having NOTHING in development for it, though given the trash they've put out I'm not sure if that's a bad thing) and I'd say that things are going to get worse before they get better.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I only worked one launch: The Dreamcast. (Just dated myself there.) We opened up at 8am, at noon the manager sent me and the other new guy home. Maybe 6 people came and got their console. Maybe 6. It was sad.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wow. I camped out for mine on 9/9/99 and it was a line around the block at my local EB at the time.

    ReplyDelete
  30. At present, the current model is unsustainable. When approx $200 MILLION (half of it advertising) is dropped on Bioshock Infinite, a 1-player game with limited appeal, with no hope to get that money back, you know things are going to fall apart.

    ReplyDelete
  31. http://gameological.com/2013/02/more-more-morehow-do-you-like-it/

sums up some of the problems of todays video game industry.

    ReplyDelete
  32. well, great games don't become horrible games just because they are old. after the new generation comes out you can easily buy a ps3 or xbox360 for cheap and play them.

    ReplyDelete
  33. even sadder because Dreamcast didn't fail because of the actual device being bad but because of marketing etc.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I still mourn for the Sega Saturn, personally.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Do people seriously still use Xboxs? Does any human being not have a ps3/won't be buying the ps4???

Also what's anyones take on the wii-u? I bought it just for the new mario and nowthat I've beat it I'm just considering giving it to a friend with kids (except I don't know any)

    ReplyDelete
  36. When it was all said and done, my favorite game, tiger13, cost $110.
70 for the legends version, and 40 for the dlc courses. Thats fucked up

    ReplyDelete
  37. This comment sums it all up for me

    ReplyDelete
  38. The wwe legends game was really fun

    ReplyDelete
  39. DLC can suck my ass. If I pay $60 for a game I should get everything. And besides, I don't even have XBox Live.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Have a question for you all -

I have a 360, and I just cancelled my subscript to XBL. Looking to get a PS3 because, well, I'm tired of paying for online that I hardly use. Also looking for a PSP for Jr. Basscase. Also have a huge library of PS2 games.

My question is: 1) should I look for a BC PS3 or just get a flat and a PS2 separately? And 2) How much can I get a PSP for nowadays?

    ReplyDelete
  41. If cali changes their marriage laws to allow people to be with inanimate objects I'm gonna marry my Sony.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Or they could just make it ten times easier by making the new backwards compatible.

    ReplyDelete
  43. How is buying a used system for pennies not easier?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Because a 360 isn't going to suddenly be dirt cheap after the new one comes out.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think the "once every 24 hour" rule suck as well, but can we ALL be honest for a second..... If you can't afford ANY internet service, you shouldn't be spending money on a friggin' gaming console.

    ReplyDelete
  46. No, but if you wait a bit the price will drop rapidly as people sell off their no longer cutting edge shit.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I don't feel like waiting 2 years.

    ReplyDelete
  48. After that press conference, I was more sold on a Wii U than an Xbox One! At least the Wii U VC is getting Earthbound.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Then you risk buying a potential piece of shit.

Are there even any games that are must-haves for this device?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Backwards compatibility jacks the price of the console up. The reason the PS3 was so expensive originally was because of the BC of PS1 AND PS2 games.

    ReplyDelete
  51. And Zelda, and a 3D Mario, and all the other NIntendo IPs we don't get on other systems.

    ReplyDelete
  52. it was easily possible (and still is) to get an xbox or a ps2 for very, very low prices after their successors were available.

why should it be totally different this time?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Every time next gen comes out, it takes a year at least to hit their stride. Because of that, a lot of people don't make the shift right away.

    ReplyDelete
  54. *Cough*RRoD*Sputter*

    ReplyDelete
  55. Many of the best PS2 games are available as HD sets.

    -Ico/Shadow of the Collossus
    -God of War I-3

I've got a BC PS3 and have only played a PS2 game once. Really depends how many of the PS2 games you still play.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Just a port or a NEW Earthbound??

    ReplyDelete
  57. Zelda's lost the magic for me since Twilight Princess.

    ReplyDelete
  58. If they penalize people for buying used games then I hope Microsoft dies a quick, painful death because they deserve to. The PS2 was the better gaming system for that generation and the 360 was the better gaming system for this generation. I don't understand why we need five million hardware devices to do the same four things. Trying to compete with smart phones and tablets is pointless, as-is acting like a gaming console that can deliver multimedia content is a new, exciting thing. The vast majority of people aren't interested in syncing up every electronic device in their home, and most people can't afford such bells and whistles. Building a console that can do things on the off chance that you want it to basically translates to everyone paying for stuff only a few people want. That's bullshit. Everyone wants a video game console, so why isn't that the primary function?

Quite frankly neither the PS4 or X1 looks desirable and I'll be quite happy to play the hundreds of 360 titles I've missed for the next decade. I won't even consider buying a new console until a quality wrestling game emerges or the WWE/2K franchise goes exclusively next-gen. When the time comes to make a choice, it looks like PS4 will be the way to go, unless Microsoft corrects the used games issue and releases a console that is game-oriented. I don't care how it looks as long as it plays games.

All of this reminds me of a comic I saw recently. A guy stands in front of a TV as his new gaming console flashes a message on screen saying "Please insert game." After he does the message changes to "Please insert money."

    ReplyDelete
  59. I just say this, if you give the Wii-U away and then Nintendo releases something else you want its gonna suck for you

    ReplyDelete
  60. Yeah, I got the newer PS3 and got all the PS2 games I wanted on the PSN for cheap, no discs needed. The Ratchet set, the Jak set, the Sly Cooper set, the God of War games (PS2 and PSP), the Prince of Persia games...I'm likely never going to get through them all. I just finished Sly 1 and it was just as fun here as it was in 2002.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I don't know your tastes, but if you have any interest in turn based strategy or rpg games then Fire Emblem:Awakening justifies the 3DS on its own

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'm just old man. (31) I find myself with less and less time to play video games. I might only be able to play 15-20 hours in a week. (Consul gaming, i play games on my phone etc constantly) So I just have to prioritize my gaming. Tiger, and nba2k13 online is all I've played in the last six months other than Mario u. And I know GTA 5 is coming out soon and then I'll be wrapped up in that. Its just too hard for me to game a lot. I don't know why since I don't have kids or really any extra responsibilities but I just find my self forced away for various reasons.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Cool. Thanks, guys.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Why not just buy the new system then?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Oh, I can easily justify the 3DS from a games standpoint... unless it's somehow not BC with DS games? (Also, does it still have the GBA port? I don't own any GBA games, just curious.)

    ReplyDelete
  66. Skyward Sword might be one of the best games I've ever played. Gave me that same feeling I got the first time I played A Link to the Past.
