Batman

Batman Zero Year started today.  Perhaps an entry with your thoughts would be in order?

Huh, I would have figured Superman Unchained would be the biggest topic of conversation.  I haven't gotten to either one yet as I usually read them at work on break, but you can probably pencil me in for the exact opposite of whatever Jesse Baker felt like.  We can do a weekly pull list thread on Wednesdays if people want, though.

Speaking of early years, I took a shot with Wolverine Season One and man was that ever a fantastic read.  Just a fun comic with Logan learning to be a civilized killer and picking out costumes and such.

  1. A weekly pull thread would be awesome. I did one at the old DC Comics message boards years back and I loved to see what everyone was getting each week.

  2. While I usually dig Snyder, I'm not going to be getting Superman Unchained. I have zero interest in the new 52 version of Superman. Although, as a give away, my store threw in All-Star Superman 1 and it really failed to interest me. Lex is an obsessed killer, Superman is unbelievably powerful, meh.
Only comics I bought today were Batman, which I enjoyed and started things off quite nicely (and I'm sure set Jesse into insta-rage) and Constantine, which was half John walking around town doing John-type-stuff and half setting up the coming crossover. Nothing appealing from Marvel this week. I did almost pick up the Miller Wolverine trade I've been looking to get for a while now, but I reminded myself that I currently have three and a half Essential/Showcase trades and an Atom trade to get through.

  3. I don't know. I'm a huge Bat-fan, but seriously, how many times can they retell the same story?

  5. He's the hero that Batham deservres, but not to one it needs right now.
    He's a silent guargian, a watchful protector.

    He is...

  6. It was pretty good all things considered, I'm not sure what the spoiler policy is here so I'll refrain from them but I went in wondering what could Snyder possibly retell with Batman's new 52 origin, and according to the first issue (if i have it right) it's a pretty risky and big change, really intriguing stuff that's got me hooked for the next issue.

Superman Unbound was pretty excellent too...the opening and cliffhanger just killed me.

  7. I've only seen the preview art pages of Unchained, but it looks to be some of Jim Lee's best work in years. Kind of radically different in a few panels, too.

  8. All-Star is good for what it is, but I pretty much hate the Silver Age Superman, so I don't have nearly as much love for it as most.

I'm very interested in Unchained, especially since I get the impression it's doing its own thing rather than adhering to Scott Lobdell's often-weird version of the character.

Plus I buy nearly anything with Lee's name attached.

  9. Can someone explain to me what the deal is with Superman Unchained? Why should I read it?

  10. It's by two of the best creators out there.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Is it an ongoing title or just a mini-series?

The beginning of the summer is the worst time to get back into comics, but I'm trying.

    ReplyDelete
  12. It's ongoing. But I'd bet that Lee pencils less than 12 issues.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'll have to check it out. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yeah, it's ongoing, but Snyder hasn't indicated if he'll stay past his big story he's got planned. And Lee will almost certainly drop out at some point. But man is that first issue pretty, from what I saw.

I'd give it a shot at least. Snyder's a hell of a writer, as Dougie said, and the book is designed to welcome new readers, I think.

  15. Read it, it's far FAR from any origin I've ever read.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I thought Batman #21 was great. I'm glad it's not a retread of Year One. It's doing new things. Plus I've been eager to see Snyder and Capullo do a certain character that appears here.

Speaking of Capullo his art here is damn pretty yet again.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I throw my support in as well.

    ReplyDelete
  18. It's a pretty different retelling of the story than Year One already. I was worried it would retread but it's paving it's own path.

  19. Off topic, one TV news review of Man of Steel I saw this weekend said the movie would be disappointing to Superman fans because it had no Lex Luthor or kryptonite.

I can't believe someone pays these people.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I haven't been able to dig Lee too much since someone pointed out that all his characters look the same. But I'm much more of a writer follower than an artsit guy.

    ReplyDelete
  21. A) I think that's common among most monthly comic book artists.
    B) I really don't think it's true with Lee. Dude drew the most iconic version of the X-Men, for God's sake, and his Wolverine looked nothing like his Cyclops.

    ReplyDelete
  22. That's exactly what Superman fans have been WANTING from a Superman movie! Critics suck.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Look at his Superman and his Batman. His faces tend to be similar. I don't think he's a bad artist, just a little overrated.

I just really, really hope that they don't overuse Snyder and have him end up like Bendis or Johns.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Johns is doing just fine on JLA and Aquaman. And GL before it ended.

And his Supes and Bats looked similar, but most artists have always drawn them similarly. He's by a wide margin my favorite superhero artist not named Alex Ross.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Well, full disclosure: I was never a huge Bendis fan. But I digress, it's not that Johns has fallen to Frank Miller levels but he was a Morrison-level talent for a while and has seemed to drop off a little.

I'm a big fan of Steve Epting and Ethan Van Sciver(Sp?). I'm more critical of Jim Lee in part because of his recent history of delays (which is why I don't love Bryan Hitch).

    ReplyDelete
  26. It's like saying that Batman Begins was disappointing to Batman fans because it didn't have the Joker or a utility belt full of gadgets.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I just read the first issue this morning and thought it was one of the better Superman books out there. I don't know if it will keep the creative mojo - I hope Snyder stays on for a while, along with Lee - but for right now it looks like a quality pick-up.

  28. Morrison tends to be very polarizing. Plus, there can be this really condescending dismissal of his detractors that I find annoying. "Oh, you don't like it? Well, you're just not smart enough to get it!"

I like New X-Men, his Batman run, Arkham Asylum, 52, We3, All-Star Superman, and Final Crisis (didn't like FC initially, thought it read way better as a trade).

I didn't like his JLA run for the same reason I don't like some of his other stuff: he gets so enamored of concepts that he neglects character and story.

Delays irritate the HELL out of me. I understand that things happen (speaking of overrated, I didn't fault Mark Millar when he had Crohn's and his books were delayed) but it's like Ultimates 2 being delayed for something like 9 months because of Hitch and then Old Man Logan being delayed because of Hitch. I don't just blame the artist or writer, if you're hiring these people build a buffer in.

Though I am forgiving based on the quality of the work. Locke and Key can be delayed a LOT but it's my favorite book coming out right now.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yes, thank you. I have a much bigger problem with Morrison fanboys than Morrison himself.

As for the Morrison stuff I've read, I loved New X-Men (even with the weird characterizations), JLA (I just found it fun, even though it also had some weird characterizations), Arkham Asylum (which is weird since I HATED his proper Batman run), liked All-Star Superman (a tad overrated, but still good for what it is), and of course 52 was awesome, but it was a big-time collaborative effort. I almost feel Morrison works better with someone to bounce ideas off -- Mark Millar early on, then the Johns/Waid/Rucka team.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Bocce balls, Superman Beyond was the example of Morrison getting so enamored of concepts that he neglects character and story.

My exposure to X-Men books was limited when I read New X-Men. I actually liked Astonishing better under Whedon but wished Morrison had not been hounded by the Editorial Board so much.

As for 52, yeah, totally agree. I've never been a big Millar fan; I think he is the most overrated writer in comics today, edging out Bendis (who, if you're interested I'm not a huge fan of and I can go into why if you're interested).

What didn't you like about Morrison's proper Batman run? I loved it, personally.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I recognized very little of Batman in it. It was all Zurr En Arhh, time traveling caveman Batman, Dr. Hurt and a bunch of sci-fi supernatural concepts that I don't like in my Batman. He was so intent at making his grand philosophical point that he turned Batman into a psychedelic parody of himself, in the process creating a book that was so far up its own posterior that I couldn't tell the beginning from the end.

I did love Batman & Robin though.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Agree to disagree. I saw Bruce/Batman as being given a superpower: his will and tactical mind. Batman is the pinnacle of humanity while not being a Miller-esque psycho. I see what you're saying about the sci-fi and supernatural concepts. One thing I liked about the post-52 relaunch was that there was a variety in the Batbooks. Didn't like the main one? Read Dini's run on Detective. Didn't like that? Read Ruck on Batwoman, etc.
