Going for the hatrick with Randy Orton

Hey, speaking of Jesse....

> Since you have two people writing in about Randy Orton, might as well give you a lucky number three on the subject in terms of a third email on him.
>
> Any reason why the WWE refuses to turn Randy Orton heel? With the ascension of Punk, the WWE has been struggling with the need to find heels and let alone those who are big enough to be credible threats. And as it has been said, Orton seems to know that his days as the top face is over what with him wanting to go heel.
>
> This is most notable when you consider that Sheamus has effectively upstaged Orton as a top face on Smackdown and the fact that Orton would have been tailor made for a rival for Punk during his time as a good guy world champion, far better than Jericho in terms of a filler feud during the first half of 2012.
>
> Does Vince fear that turning Orton heel might hurt his merch sales? Or is it more or less him being contrary simply for the sake of being contrary, especially since Orton himself has requested a return to the dark side for his character?
>
> Jesse

He just turned on Smackdown, didn't he?

Unless he was possessed by Dr. Octopus.

I didn't see it as a heel turn. Bryan dropkicked him by mistake and Orton was paying him back for it. That's how Orton has been for years as a face.

  2. Definitely not a heel turn. Face vs face at the ppv. Which may actually be the heel turn.

They did that match at the wrestlemania the year before. There's no money in doing that match again, at the next wrestlemania. Also Jericho was coming off a semi-hot return at the time, so he had some momentum in that. What momentum did Orton have?

  4. Agreed. Plus, it'll be a good test for Bryan's face power (or not). Randall has his hardcore fans, so we'll see how the crowd reacts. If Bryan comes through this with overwhelming fan support, it may open up the remaining eyes at the top of the WWE brass vs. Cena.

  5. Agree with the others that it's not a heel turn just part of Orton's character. Orton's been still working as a face on the house shows as well. Having said that, whether it's a heel turn or not, Orton's getting booed out of the building in Chicago so they can always work with that.

Bryan's character is in an interesting place since his new gimmick is that he has something to prove. It's hard for them to write compelling face vs face storylines but Bryan's storyline basically writes itself. That's probably how they'll get to his match vs. Cena. He beats Orton, still has more to prove and the biggest test is the champ.

  6. Another issue with the overall dickishness of the top faces, it's going to take a hell of a lot for fans to realize they're actually turning heel and not just being the usual dickhead face.

  7. Remember the RAW where Kendrick and London came to help Triple-H? They got Pedigreed for daring to help Hunter and Hunter just shrugged his shoulders.

  8. Yeah, that was the worst ever.

  10. I think the implication was that Orton would've HAD momentum fresh off a heel turn.

That said, I wouldn't have traded Jericho/Punk for anything. I personally enjoyed the feud and loved the matches.

  12. I cannot be alone in thinking that looks kinda fun.

  13. Orton vs. Bryan is happening at Payback? Fuck with Punk-Jericho and Orton-Bryan I may have to buy the show.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yup. I really think its possible d Bryan is as over as Orton once was, if not more. I hope he at least gets to job to cena twice so he could main event summerslam

  15. This made my day

  16. There didn't need to be any money in it, since Rock vs Cena and Taker vs HHH sold that show anyway. Punk beating a heel Orton may have done more for Punk and his reign than beating Jericho though

  17. That was magnificent.

    Hulkaphysics, brother."

  20. Better than Jericho? You having a laugh! Jericho and Punk are like mirror perfect opponents on paper. I thought their feud was awesome despite not living up to the insane expectations that people put on it before hand. Orton/Punk could be a decent rivalry, but then again I find the guy incredibly unengaging so I think it would be only 'good' at best. I'm still trying to see what is so great about the guy in the ring, everything he does is so unbelievable telegraphed and formulaic it's like he is almost to slick for his own good, he needs to be more gritty and rough.

  21. i like orton but i agree his matches are very formulaic.

i also dont like face orton/heel punk. doesnt work for me.

    if its switched definitely.

  22. THREADJACK~!

So I was going through Shawn Michaels' book again, and came across this gem regarding his working injured through his 2004 Taboo Tuesday match with Triple H:

"The Lord must have been watching over me that night, because I went out and somehow made it through the match. It was nothing special for those who didn't know how serious my injury was, but for those who did know, I made an impact. Some of the boys had tears in their eyes after the match. Chris Benoit came up to me and said 'I thought last night was amazing, but that was the most amazing thing I've ever seen.'"

Never realized that Bret Hart was just ripping off Shawn's writing style...
