QOTD - June 17th, 2013

For Holiday's and special occassions I planned on doing different things with the QOTD. Since Father's Day fell on a Sunday, I'm gonna do it here. So, in celebration of the fathers, you get TWO questions! Yes, finally, the hard-work & toiling of fatherhood has finally paid off. Caliber looks out for his people. Anyone wanting to submit a question, caliberw@hotmail.com.

First question comes from Bill Ray:

"Hi Caliber,
Here's a question for you and the blog: what's your favorite rarely-seen spot in
wrestling? I'm partial to the "gorilla presses opponent on the floor and
into the ring" spot, which the power babyfaces should bring back at some point.

How say you?"

I think the reason we haven't seen that spot is because we haven't had any real "power" wrestlers, like
Warlord, or LOD. I think Goldberg was the last wrestler in that vein. As for a spot that I miss, well,
I'd have to go with the double noggin' knocker. I say that purely for nostalgia reasons, because it's
completely ridiculous and would be laughed at today. If I had to choose one move that represents the 80's
wrestling scene, it'd be the DNK. Well, at least for the WWE.

Second question:
This one comes from Jeff Bailey

"Here's one I've been wondering about:

Why didn't Capcom ever make a Powerstone style Marvel Superheroes game? It seems like such an
obvious idea (at least to me.) Then again many of Capcom's Marvel related decisions boggle my mind.

So I guess my question is, if you were Capcom what game would you have made?
Or not even just Capcom necessarily."

I want Street Fighter vs Mortal Kombat. I mean, they were the two biggest fighting games of the 90's,
with fans on each side swearing their series is the best. I was always the Mortal Kombat fan, but Street
Fighter is an undeniable classic. I'd love to see what kind of Fatalities they'd cook up for the
Street Fighter guys. I also want Jason as a DLC.

How say you guys?

Comments

  1. No power wrestlers? Mark Henry doesn't count as a power wrestler?

    ReplyDelete
  2. 1) There are still other power wrestlers - just those spots aren't used as often. On-topic, what doesn't get enough play are the false tags during a tag team match, where the babyfaces switch off illegally and slap their hands together to make the sound of the tag. Heels go nuts over it, and the crowd laughs b/c they're being beatn at their own game.

    2) I would've liked to have seen a Capcom brawler using MvC2 characters, kinda like how Tekken 3 had that Streets of Rage-type mode. Or re-doing an arcade cabinet using Spiderman, X-Men (y'all remember those two arcade cabs - tons of fun), and the Avengers.

    ReplyDelete
  3. John Cena is considered a power wrestler near as I can tell.

Others since Goldberg: Mason Ryan, Big E. Langston, Mark Henry, Batista, Ryback, Kane, an assortment of other roid heads that I can't currently think.

    They're out there.

If I were Capcom, I would make a Marvel v. Marvel Zombies game. That shit is begging to be made.

    ReplyDelete
  4. We saw the Gorilla Press an opponent into the ring at WM 28. Cody Rhodes vs Big Show. But a spot I miss is the Tombstone-like reversal for a power move. Last time I saw it(I think) was the Kane vs Taker Hell in a Cell match. I always love when that reversal gets used for anything. Like in Batista vs Cena at WM 26, Taker vs Brock Hell in a Cell, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  5. How could I forget Big Show!

    No power wrestlers. Pffft.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I miss the Ric Flair 'try to escape, babyface grabs the trunks and exposes Ric's bare ass'. It was always funny, as was the 'big windup followed by eye poke' made famous by Roddy Piper.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat just wouldn't work because of fatalities. You can't have them because that's not the kind of game Street Fighter is and Mortal Kombat isn't MK without them. See also: MK vs. DC.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Well, sure, there are strong guys. Just not in the style of LOD or the big juice heads from the 80's. Like, it was always a big deal about how big & powerful these guys were, and they wrestled accordingly. None of the guys in this day & age are like that.

Man, a Marvel Zombies game would be awesome. Have you seen the fan-made trailer for a MZ movie? It's really well done.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I remember when arcades were at the height of their fandom in the early 90's. At my arcade, whenever there was a game that was a huge hit, it'd be hooked up to two different giant projector screens, because there'd be HUGE crowds of people watching. It was pretty incredible.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Well, Street Fighter character's could have fatalities similar to Killer Instinct, where they'd just pummel the guy.

I never played MK vs DC. Didn't they have PG-13 fatalities? Like Joker shooting a gun that had a BANG flag?

    ReplyDelete
  11. My favourite rarely used spot is when Cesaro wins a match

    ReplyDelete
  12. I disagree with your first sentiment. Seems like announcers can't wait to remark on power and strength and the such. It's pretty much a Vince McMahon trope.

I think I did see it, but I'm gonna have to go check it out again. I enjoyed the hell out of Marvel Zombies until Marvel does what it does and ruins good things.

How about the old suplex back into the ring/manager grabs the leg spot. Tell me you couldn't see Heyman doing that to help Axle retain his IC title.
The crossover video game I want to see? Stewie vs Maggie. That is all

    ReplyDelete
  14. I think so, but they were incredibly tame. Which honestly takes away 90% of the fun for fatalities.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Most of the old manager spots are gone because we don't have enough managers. Jimmy Hart was the master of that suplex spot because he'd flop around like a fish, struggling to hold onto the leg. He was also great when the face would chase him around the ring only to be ambushed by the heel. Jimmy was the best coward of them all.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Tag team wrestling has just lost so much of what it was and what it can be, the false tags are just one example of it. Without a strong heel team like the Midnight Express or Anderson/Blanchard, tag matches just aren't anywhere near as good anymore.

The Shield would be a perfect team to get back into the classic groove of tag team matches, though, wouldn't they? Although, I think an Ambrose/Rollins team would be a better comparison to the classic heel teams than Reigns/Rollins, but that doesn't mean they can't start working in some classic spots like the false tags, the phantom tags when the ref is distracted and other stuff like that.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The latest Mortal Kombat game took the Joker fatality with the fake gun and gave it to Shang Tsung as one of his Fatalities. I loved pulling that one off, because it seems so out of place in the MK world.

    ReplyDelete
  18. One of the reasons I loved this years Punk - Cena match was the regular piledriver Punk delivered. That move needs brought back. That was a fantastic spot in that match. Also mentioned before I would love to see someone take the DDT and run with it as a finisher.

As for video games I don't know about all that Marvel vs. Capcom stuff but I'm still patiently waiting a new No Mercy style game, and also a fantasize about a new side-scrolling old school style Ninja Gaiden.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I always associate it with Heenan because that was how he helped Rude take the IC title off Warrior at Wrestlemania V. It's great how all the classic managers could put their own twist on those spots to make them their own. Such a lost art.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Cesaro? doing his finish on khali isnt power?
    Ryback? shell-shocking 2 guys isn't powah?

    i mean dafuq?

    ReplyDelete
  21. cultstatus, are you reading this?

    ReplyDelete
  22. btw i hate both SF and MK cuz of arcade fags ranging.

    no skill.

    tekken ftw

    ReplyDelete
  23. If Rollins and Reigns would show more tag team psychology like the MX or Tully and Arn, it's be fantastic to watch. I always liked how Tully would sneak to the other corner and take out that guy as his partner was inching over for a tag. Great stuff.

Or when the MX and RnRs would fight, and one of the RnRs would get thrown over the top, where the other would protest, and that would get his buddy tossed over the top again.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The old Anderson and Blanchard tag spots( rope-assisted abdominal stretch, the false tag, the assisted hotshot, the spike piledriver) would be great for The Shield, especially because they usually wrestle Bryan, and he knows EXACTLY how to sell that stuff properly.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I spent a ton of my paycheck in an arcade down the street where I worked. Also met my gf there (when, you know, meeting girls at the arcade was more of a pipe dream). Played a ton of Marvel Super Heroes and XMvSF (which was unbalanced as crap).

I kinda miss those days - not because of the games, but I met a lot of cool people in there.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'll take Virtua Fighter over Tekken TYVM

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ha! And to me, Cesaro would be considered a power guy, but they seem to have stopped letting him use a lot of the power offense(no-hands airplane spin, press slam into a Death Valley driver, the Ricola bomb, the Alphamare waterslide),

    ReplyDelete
  28. And the Miz-busting Giant Swing.

    ReplyDelete
  29. you can have that blocky ass shit.

    yw

    ReplyDelete
  30. Stuff like this is exactly what I'm talking about. When was the last time WWE had a heel tag team that employed such classic psychology during a match? It kind of faded away in the mid-1990s (in WWF, anyway... I don't remember much of it in WCW, either, but their tag division lasted a bit longer before dying out).

    ReplyDelete
  31. Mortal Kombat just wasn't a fun fighting game for me. If it didn't have the blood and fatalities, it would have been another Pit Fighter. I always preferred Street Fighter.

I'm actually somewhat shocked I haven't played Marvel vs. Capcom 3 yet.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Amsterdam_Adam_CurryJune 17, 2013 at 11:33 AM

It wouldn't work because Street Fighter is a good game and Mortal Kombat sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Truly miss the classic tag-team spots. I always loved the taunting of the official to goad the babyface into the ring, then as the referee (with his back to the heels of course) forced the face back out of the ring to his corner, the heels would choke and generally abuse the other face in their corner. This all always led to the face finally having enough and just blowing by the ref to help his partner sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I could rule on Tekken using a combination of my toe and left ass cheek.

    I'm good

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think the last time they had something like that was Hardys vs. MNM from December to Remember (or Dismember, whatever). Although they've gotten some better matchups as of late between Kofi Hell No and Shield.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ryback would have no problem fitting in with those roid heads from the 80s. In fact, before he turned heel, he did the gorilla press slam a few times.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Shoot, what about Sheamoose hitting White Noise on Big Show?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I wonder if the demotion of tag team wrestling is partially due to using the guys as singles to make cards longer. Most of your top guys made their way as a tag team, so there is some incentive there.

Plus, the Tag Team Formula gets a pop EVERY SINGLE TIME.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Do yourself a favor and skip over MvC3 in favor of Ultimate MvC3. The worst recent example of a cash-in, and a game they should've released instead of MvC3.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Probably, but it's still baffling why despite this, there isn't a more prominent tag division. There are so many guys languishing on the roster. Aside from that, why did these spots disappear? Part of Vince's self hate towards wrestling? Arn Anderson is an agent for goodness sake. Pretty sure he understands the tag formula to a tea.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I love MK and SF, but don't prefer either of them to Tekken.

    +1

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think part of it is (that I've heard) that some of the wrestlers have an unfair stigma attached to tag teaming, thinking it's "beneath" them. (If you're jobbing on Velocity or whatever, then it's gotta be a step up) I think that, and the lack of ambition with some guys, is hurting tag teaming.

If they tried now, they could bring back the classic 10 man tag team Survivor Series matchup - Shield/PTP/Cody+Sandow/pick 4 more jobbers vs. Truth+Kofi/Usos/Ryder+Riley/ 4 more jobbers.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I always preferred Street Fighter as well, but I think you're short-changing MK to say it would've been Pit Fighter without the blood and fatalities. Mostly, though, I wanted to give you props for mentioning Pit Fighter. Such a horrible, horrible game.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I wish Arn and Tully had used the old Anderson finish where Arn or Gene held the guy in a top wristlock and Ole would hit a top-rope knee to the shoulder.

    ReplyDelete
  45. "Since Father's Day fell on a Sunday"

Pretty sure it *always* falls on a Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  46. A Long Island Iced Tea*

    ReplyDelete
  47. No on Flair's ass, yes on the eyepoke. Piper was a riot in the ring.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Actually, that's not entirely true. I honestly don't think that Daigo, Infiltration, Justin Wong, Alex Valle, Knee, Nin, HOA, Perfect Legend, ChrisG, PR|Balrog, or any other top level fighting game players would succumb to losing to button mashers. They would know exactly what to do in situations like that: let them get it out of their system, and punish accordingly. Exactly as it should be.

  54. Dammit. Nick, don't I strike enough fear into your heart that you're afraid of making me look a fool in public?

    ReplyDelete
  55. I use to always see the Pit Fighter arcade game at 7-11, and thought it looked so cool. I'd always play it, even though it sucked, because the whole rendered people into characters looked so damn awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Dude, Tekken is for bitches. Fuck all that combo bullshit. Street Fighter & MK required skill. Not button mashing.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Oh man, back then you could easily bag a chick, a hot one at that, back in the 90's arcade scene. No problem. I was too young at the time, but I knew some older guys who had groupies. Fighting games were so popular that at local stores that had demo units of the Super Nintendo would sometimes get crowds of like, 30 people, so they could play Street Fighter.

    ReplyDelete
  58. My favorite spot

  59. I don't think you know how good the top level players are. It's like saying "I don't care how good LeBron is, he can lose a game of 1-on-1 to a 4 foot tall kid just randomly shooting".

In the competitive scene players like Justin Wong went about 5 years between losing tournaments at Marvel vs. Capcom 2. The current best in the world player for Street Fighter is a guy from Korea named Infiltration almost never loses even to other pro players. The fact that he lost a tournament in Sweden the other day, even though he wasn't playing his main character was a really big deal.

Fighting games are almost on the level of competitive sport now.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Don't play Marvel vs. Capcom 3. It's not a good game, very silly when played at a high level. If you like superhero fighting games and you liked Mortal Kombat, Injustice Gods Among Us is a really fun game both at high level and at casual level also.

  65. Oh yeah, that was fucking vicious, especially because Ole would throw on the standing armbar right after that.
