That game 7 was a way bigger draw than I thought it would be. WWE was probably crossing it's fingers for a Spurs/Pacers finals too, that would have been ratings cancer for the NBA.
Your all missing the point...CM Punk = RATINGS, and the WWE knows it. Why tease a return, when they obviously are gonna switch the match to Curtis Axel vs Chris Jericho for MASSIVE heat on Haymen/Axel.
I really hope Daniel Bryan and The Shield don't get Rydered for this.
Punk was smart like a Hogan taking his vacation when he did. Come back in late June when all the winter sports wrap up, and say "Hey, I'm back, the ratings went up!", even though it had nothing to do with you either way.
Bah.... Bryan will take the fall, meaning Cena stays on top and more than likely, we get Bryan jobbed out and humiliated as the summer storyline to punish Bryan and the fans for rejecting Saint Cena.....
I blame the live crowds. Maybe if the WWE played more in the lonesome crowded west instead of just sticking around the same tired-out crowds so much. It's great they boast about being watched all over the world, but it wouldn't matter if they had the moon and antarctica watching, if the crowds are dead.
And I would not be shocked if Punk's return will be screwed up SPECIFICALLY to prevent any ratings bump his return will cause. And hell, I would not be shocked if they DO rush him back to fight Jericho (and jobbing to Jericho) to basically undercut any major return boost he might bring simply because they can't have him prove that Cena isn't a draw by having his return spike the ratings big time. So he'll be stuck with Jericho, now reduced to the level of jobber to the stars in terms of lack of relevance.
The only ones who will be safe from this might be the Shield but it will probably mean that the Shield won't split up anytime soon due to them not wanting to actually push them as singles
Haven't ratings for RAW dropped April to June every year since hundreds of years before the dawn of history (when there lived an ancient race of people....the Undertaker's Druids)
Logic- fans watched the nba game WWE writers logic- i knew we should have stuck with the 14th script and not the 17th one HHH logic- That Bryan guy can't draw. Hopefully Shawn and Kevin can bail us out of this one McMahon logic- hmmm, we need to get shane and linda on here. Hogan logic- Heyman logic- It takes time to build new stars. Of course if they gave me the book this wouldn't have happened Punk logic- 3D motion image?
Yep, WCW too. Real sports hurt fake sports in the ratings. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if the NFL switching their "A-level night game" package from Monday to Sunday hurt buyrates.
There was a time when Raw was must-see tv to. If there was an important sporting event on you had to make a tough decision, or flick back and fourth. I'd watch the Blue Jays play the Astros before I'd watch Raw now.
I don't think anyone should be surprised. For people who don't follow the NBA, last night was a referendum on the Miami Heat as presently constructed. If the Heat had lost, Chris Bosh would have been traded by mid July, Wade probably gets the full "wait, everyone knows he was doing roids/HGH for years, right?" type of questioning all summer and LeBron is the biggest chokiest choker who ever choked just like always. Given that LeBron James is probably the biggest sports celebrity in American sports right now, last night was kind of a big deal.
It's WWE's good fortune that Stern schedules the finals only for Sundays, Thursdays and Tuesdays. Because the series coming up is going to be kind of a big deal also.
No team would take Bosh's ginormous salary for four more seasons without giving the Heat a ton of shit and bad contracts. The guy damn near has a max deal
You couldn't have picked a better show for that rating to be attached to. Hopefully the McMahons (Trips included) take it personally. I can imagine Triple H consoling Stephanie during one of their anal sessions.
Stephanie: "I can't ow help but think ow that the low rating ow was our fault. I mean ow it was the first time I've been OW FUCK on the show in months."
Triple H: "Nah, it's Daniel Bryan's fault. Think I should fire him?"
Stephanie: "Of course not."
Triple H: "I think I should fire him."
Stephanie: "You're not going ow to fire Daniel Bryan for ow God's sake."
I don't mind singles push within the confines of the group. What I'm opposed to them doing this early is breaking the team up for the purposes of singles pushes. They're stronger as a unit in the eyes of the fans. I like Aric's idea of treating them sorta like the Horsemen, but without a Ric Flair.
Don't be dense. I was specifically referring to posting the same "basketball sucks, derp" comment and warning you that spamming that without actually explaining or elaborating is dumb and not tolerated. Doesn't mean you don't contribute in other comments.
Oh, puh-LEEZ. What we'll all be talking about after the NBA Finals is the awesome story that was told! How could we possibly care that Duncan might get a fifth ring? Or that LeBron will get a second? Championships don't matter!
It should be alarming to WWE that the big four major sports turn out far more compelling stories "by accident" night in and night out than WWE has scripted in probably a decade.
If it will make you happy, I will refrain from making 'basketball sucks'-related comments from now on. I wasn't spamming per-se, I just have a strong predilection for repetitive jokes.
What makes this board great, imo, is that we allow everyone to speak their mind. We try not to censor things, unless folks start insulting each other for no reason other than that or racial/homophobic insults. Anyways, you can keep posting basketball sucks all you want. Just spamming it in one thread is not something that's contributing anything. Do it all you want, go for it, just don't spam it in the same thread.
lol, yeah. I'm trying to think of what different ways he can keep winning matches without actually...you know, getting a pin or submission. They've done distraction, concussion and interference. Maybe that's his new gimmick, The Accidental Wrestler.
Last night's game drew about 11.5 million viewers according to overnights. MNF AVERAGED 12.3 million last year and it was considered a down year. Plus, network TV is in reruns. And the NBA game was functionally over by the 3rd hour of Raw. You simply can't blame competition with the Heat/Pacers game for the bad rating.
There are possibilities and if Miami had lost that game/series (or if they had lost last year) Miami might have been willing to entertain some of the more desperate ones.
--Boozer for Bosh is always a possibility kind of "both guys need a change of scenery" deal. --Josh Smith sign and trade is a possibility with Atlanta getting picks/cash back in that deal. --Bosh for the pupu platter is a possibility with Miami looking to use his money to pick up smaller pieces. Miami will not be able to afford Birdman over the next year so a deal centered around a defense/rebounding center and spare parts might sound good to them.
Personally I'm of the opinion that they should just keep Bosh win or lose but we all know that wouldn't have happened. Hell if the Spurs flush them we could still go down this road.
And the 3rd hour rebounded because like you said, the game was over. The 3rd hour has been weak for them in the ratings so the 3rd hour actually showing a rebound effect is fairly conclusive proof (as much as there can be with this kind of thing) that the NBA game diverted some of their traffic.
Oh God, if the options are Boozer are fucking Josh Smith, I say: NO THANK YOU. Bosh stretches the floor and was doing ok before he hurt his ankle. Who knew Hibbert would turn into Wilt this series. Andersen is 35, but Battier is probably retiring, so they may be able to keep him. I don't see a huge $ market for him at his age with his past problems.
They'll keep Bosh next year and after the big 3 opt out in 2014, they can make some moves then. I expect Wade to take a dimished contract in order to keep Lebron and Bosh may also take less. He's not a max player.
also the whole internet thing. i watched the bruins/pengs game and i knew if anything good happened on raw i could catch it on the internets later with no problem.
Like I said, I totally agree with you. The media says they have to trade Bosh but there's no better options. It's not like the Lakers are going to give them Gasol or anything. But you know how these things work, someone's gotta take the fall and it's pretty clear it's gonna be him.
The only way they keep Birdman is if he accepts the minimum or some kind of exception related deal and I THINK (not sure, I'm not too good with how all the exceptions work with the new cap) that Miami doesn't have any MLE related money remaining for 2013-14. Due to the circumstances of his signing they don't have Bird rights for Birdman (ha) do they?
I don't think it's in Birdman's interests to take the minimum; role players like that really need to get their value, especially at his age and he's earned himself 2-4 million next year.
If they actually do have Early Bird rights on him then the whole conversation is moot and they should just pay him whatever he asks for as long as the number is under 5. He's exactly what that team needs and has been looking for for 3 years.
Miami's roster will be interesting next year, because there are rumors that Mike Miller may get amnestied or retire and he's making 5m p/yr. That opens up a slot to sign another piece so they may not even need Bird Man. I hope they keep him, but he'll be 36 next year and each year = diminishing returns.
The media is a hoot. The Heat are the defending champions and heading to their 3rd straight title game and they act like Rome is collapsing. Bosh had a career year in efficiency and is a pretty big part of stretching the floor for Lebron and Wade. We'll see, interesting, like I said.
Remember waaaay back when RAW would get pre-empted for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show each year? RAW was such can't miss TV back then that having to wait a few hours to watch the show was hell. Seems ridiculous now.
Even if Miller gets amnestied or someone retires they don't have the room to bring in anyone that isn't minimum, trade or exception related. The cap next year will be at 58.5 million and right now the Heat are checking in at 86+. If Miller retires/gets amnestied that would save Arison about 15 million dollars when factoring in luxury tax payments but it won't help the team acquire any extra players for next year.
The new cap was designed specifically to screw over teams like Miami and LA. Miami is basically stuck with this core group come hell or high water. That's why finding Birdman was such a huge godsend for them this year, a team in Miami's cap position can't just find impact guys like that. If they don't have his Early Bird rights for next year, they're going to have to take a flier on Greg Oden (assuming he a. can walk and b. will take the minimum).
Ok, so I read the following. If a player had Bird rights before being amnestied, those rights transfer to the new team. This means, that if Andersen had them in Denver, he'll have them in Miami. I can't find anywhere where it says whether he had them or not. Reading the definition of the Bird rights (3 years on a team without being waived or traded), he qualifies.
Well these are the same people who claimed that Tim Tebow was going to take the Jets to multiple Super Bowls and now he can't even get a backup QB job in the CFL, so take anything the sports media and in particular the idiots at ESPN say with a grain of salt.
I figure the Heat will take it again this year and the series with the Spurs will never go to a Game 7.
Do basketball players even do steroids? Because I don't see how they would help you're game, being all jacked up won't help you shoot better. Basketball is about speed and flexibilty, not strength. Most NBA players are skinny as hell.
OJ Mayo, Hedo Turkoglu, Rashard Lewis are the biggest names who've been caught but it's silly to assume that it's just them. People said the same things about baseball but as today's news shows. Basketball PEDs wouldn't be as much about building muscle as about speeding recovery time (NBA regular season is brutal) and recovering from injury.
In Wade's case his facial structure has changed so much over the 10 years he's been in the public eye. His facial structure/jaw has expanded to Bonds-ian proportions. He's probably the safest bet among big stars.
I suspect you're right. I always thought that his Bird rights went up in smoke with his initial amnesty but it looks like you're right, I can't find anything that confirms what I thought. That's great news for Miami and for Birdman's agent. He's getting paid this summer and Arison can't do anything about it.
I remember a couple summers ago when Labron was still on the Cavs when he came into a year a full 30 pounds heavier than the year before. A baseball player does that there are steroids mentioned every time his name comes up, Labron does it and its, wow look at the way he transformed himself.
Can't cosign this - the Spurs play such a fluid P&R with Parker and Ginobili, Duncan's post turnaround is the only one I've seen better than Rasheed Wallace's, Gregg Popovich is the NBA's premier promo man... the Spurs are fun for the basketball nerd.
The Heat on the other hand could bring us back into the bad old days of the 90s where each team is going to try to find a guy to play Heroball. The only reason the Heat can do what they do is that LBJ is Magic Johnson inside Shawn Kemp's body. No more ball-dominating 2s, pls.
Arison is not opposed to paying his players, not sure if you heard anything different. The new CBA though is ridiculous in the way it attacks the luxury cap. I don't mind some parity, but I've always felt having powerhouse teams is good for the league and the league "booms" (Celtics/Lakers 80s, Bulls 90s, Heat present) proves that to be so.
I'm sure he's not opposed to paying guys but in the new world with the luxury tax, even the richest team (Lakers) is looking to cut costs any way they can. Given Miami's tax situation bringing Birdman back for a semi-reasonable contract like 5 million/year would end up costing Arison somewhere between 14-20 million depending on Miller's status and yet to be determined tax numbers.
It's not that he can't afford it and it's not that he won't end up paying that, but it's a pretty big number to swallow.
Plus you could have Russo book an angle on how Chris Anderson was investigated for being a Pedo by the FBI right before the nuggets released him. Ratings gold!
Seems like both TNA and WWE had to go head to head against the juggernaut that is the Miami Heat. They lost just like the Pacers.
ReplyDeleteI KNEW Daniel Bryan wasn't a draw...*kidding*
ReplyDeleteBasketball sucks.
ReplyDeleteThat game 7 was a way bigger draw than I thought it would be. WWE was probably crossing it's fingers for a Spurs/Pacers finals too, that would have been ratings cancer for the NBA.
ReplyDeleteObviously, the solution is more McMahons.
ReplyDeleteNO CHANCE
ReplyDeleteSucks for them. I actually thought it was a decent show — at least on DVR.
ReplyDeleteAnd who will get the blame?
ReplyDeleteDaniel Bryan
Obviously, the audience isn't responding to Curtis Axel.
ReplyDeleteNot enough HHH, too much Daniel Bryan. You know what to do creative.
ReplyDeleteRYBACK RULES!
ReplyDelete2.6? I believe that figure is actually confused with Vince's blood-alcohol level after seeing the ratings.
ReplyDeletePUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNNKKKK
ReplyDeleteYour all missing the point...CM Punk = RATINGS, and the WWE knows it. Why tease a return, when they obviously are gonna switch the match to Curtis Axel vs Chris Jericho for MASSIVE heat on Haymen/Axel.
ReplyDeleteI really hope Daniel Bryan and The Shield don't get Rydered for this.
I think we need more Summer of H.
ReplyDeleteThey'll blame it on Bryan no doubt. Between the NBA being on and the product just overall sucking, WWE has no one to blame but themselves.
ReplyDeleteHHH vs Nash vs Shawn vs Vince - Extreme circle jerk to see who is the father of Stephanie's kids. Maury can be guest ring announcer.
ReplyDeleteSmells like money to me
I wouldn't panic if I were WWE. Going up against the Heat with their backs to the wall in Game 7 plus the usual WrestleMania downswing.
ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone really deserves "blame" but I especially hope Bryan doesn't get it.
Good news for people who like bad news.
ReplyDeleteWait, but I thought that bad ratings were all punk's fault?? Ratings disaster as champion, as a certain poster here liked to say.
ReplyDeleteWell, looks like Rock giving the rub to Cena is really paying off!
Good news for people who are sick of the Cena era.
ReplyDeletePunk was smart like a Hogan taking his vacation when he did. Come back in late June when all the winter sports wrap up, and say "Hey, I'm back, the ratings went up!", even though it had nothing to do with you either way.
ReplyDeleteAll the Bryan and McMahon jokes have been taken.
ReplyDeleteUmmmm Ummm Ummmmm... Penis!
Bah.... Bryan will take the fall, meaning Cena stays on top and more than likely, we get Bryan jobbed out and humiliated as the summer storyline to punish Bryan and the fans for rejecting Saint Cena.....

It's great they boast about being watched all over the world, but it wouldn't matter if they had the moon and antarctica watching, if the crowds are dead.
ReplyDeleteThey should have Lanny Poffy via satellite to represent Macho King, yeaayah.
ReplyDeleteAnd I would not be shocked if Punk's return will be screwed up SPECIFICALLY to prevent any ratings bump his return will cause. And hell, I would not be shocked if they DO rush him back to fight Jericho (and jobbing to Jericho) to basically undercut any major return boost he might bring simply because they can't have him prove that Cena isn't a draw by having his return spike the ratings big time. ReplyDeleteI doubt anyone is panicking yet.
i got a huge one, thankuverymuch
ReplyDeletei love bad news brown, RIP
ReplyDeleteAlso like the bad news bears.
In your mouth or your ass?
ReplyDeletei dunno, it's your weiner i was talking about. dunno why you wanna put it between my toes
ReplyDeleteGame was a blowout in the 2nd half. Would be bad if WWE's ratings went down in their last 1.5 hours.
ReplyDeleteLogic- fans watched the nba game
ReplyDeleteWWE writers logic- i knew we should have stuck with the 14th script and not the 17th one
HHH logic- That Bryan guy can't draw. Hopefully Shawn and Kevin can bail us out of this one

Hogan logic-
Heyman logic- It takes time to build new stars. Of course if they gave me the book this wouldn't have happened
Punk logic- 3D motion image?
Hogan logic?
ReplyDeleteHuh? You do realize they have quarter hour ratings, right? Both of his matches will probably do well compared to what was around them.
ReplyDeleteYep, WCW too. Real sports hurt fake sports in the ratings. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if the NFL switching their "A-level night game" package from Monday to Sunday hurt buyrates.
ReplyDeleteIt's too soon to break them up anyways. Let that faction breathe for some time. We're always in a rush to push the next singles star. They're fine.
ReplyDeleteThat crowd was pretty hot, until around 8:30. Then they got a 2 hour shit sandwich before the show got good again.
ReplyDeleteTGDGI
ReplyDeleteWhy can't they keep them together even when they get a singles push? They could be today's version of the Horseman.
ReplyDeleteBasically you insulted Dougie by telling him he's well-endowed?
ReplyDeleteUh....
There was a time when Raw was must-see tv to. If there was an important sporting event on you had to make a tough decision, or flick back and fourth. I'd watch the Blue Jays play the Astros before I'd watch Raw now.
ReplyDeleteYeah, he's a BIG DICK.
ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone should be surprised. ReplyDeleteIt's WWE's good fortune that Stern schedules the finals only for Sundays, Thursdays and Tuesdays. Because the series coming up is going to be kind of a big deal also.
Yeah, those days are loooong gone. I'd say about 12-13 years gone.
ReplyDeleteMe likey.
ReplyDeleteIsn't Ambrose technically getting a singles push now, since he's a singles champ and all?
ReplyDeleteNo team would take Bosh's ginormous salary for four more seasons without giving the Heat a ton of shit and bad contracts. The guy damn near has a max deal
ReplyDeleteYou couldn't have picked a better show for that rating to be attached to. Hopefully the McMahons (Trips included) take it personally. I can imagine Triple H consoling Stephanie during one of their anal sessions.
ReplyDeleteStephanie: "I can't ow help but think ow that the low rating ow was our fault. I mean ow it was the first time I've been OW FUCK on the show in months."

Triple H: "I think I should fire him."
Stephanie: "You're not going ow to fire Daniel Bryan for ow God's sake."
Triple H: "How about Jericho then?"
Stephanie: "Maybe ow Jericho."
Triple H: "I'M GONNA CUM!"
Basketball sucks.
ReplyDeleteHe is the United States champion, so if anything they are thwarting his singles push.
ReplyDeleteShouldn't Triple H be the one saying ow...
ReplyDeleteTake your meds.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind singles push within the confines of the group. What I'm opposed to them doing this early is breaking the team up for the purposes of singles pushes. They're stronger as a unit in the eyes of the fans. I like Aric's idea of treating them sorta like the Horsemen, but without a Ric Flair.
ReplyDeleteHe's only signed for 2 more years and he has a fucked up ankle. He'll be fine.
ReplyDeleteYou've already posted this. You have anything else to contribute?
ReplyDeleteI've posted that at least seven or eight times here. Still applies.
ReplyDeleteAwesome analogy and an even better breakdown. It was blue collar vs. Hollywood. Ricky Steamboat vs. Ric Flair.
ReplyDelete"I like Aric's idea of treating them sorta like the Horsemen, but without a Ric Flair."
ReplyDeleteAnd only three minutes earlier he was asking me what else I had to contribute...
Don't be dense. I was specifically referring to posting the same "basketball sucks, derp" comment and warning you that spamming that without actually explaining or elaborating is dumb and not tolerated. Doesn't mean you don't contribute in other comments.

ReplyDeleteAs drunk and high on drugs as I am, I'm still impressed with my level of discourse.
ReplyDeleteYou got Ryan Murphy beat. Hey-ooooo!!
ReplyDeleteSurprising, he's been booked so strong.
ReplyDeleteI still think that was a gimmick.
ReplyDeletelol, yeah. I'm trying to think of what different ways he can keep winning matches without actually...you know, getting a pin or submission. They've done distraction, concussion and interference. Maybe that's his new gimmick, The Accidental Wrestler.
ReplyDeleteTHAT'S IT! HE'S BANNED!
ReplyDeleteSeriously though. If it was i'd just admit it. I have no need to try to "get over" with some stupid gimmick. I've put enough time in here as it is.
Last night's game drew about 11.5 million viewers according to overnights. MNF AVERAGED 12.3 million last year and it was considered a down year. Plus, network TV is in reruns. ReplyDeleteIt would be so fitting for me to get banned from the *only* internet board I've ever really liked.
ReplyDeleteI'll be waiting.
Why does everyone not think Bryan is a HhH pet project? He'll be fine. Curtis Axel, maybe not so much. He sucks anyway.
ReplyDeleteWell, except for mid-90s RSPW.
ReplyDeleteYOU HAD TO BE THERE
There are possibilities and if Miami had lost that game/series (or if they had lost last year) Miami might have been willing to entertain some of the more desperate ones.
ReplyDelete--Boozer for Bosh is always a possibility kind of "both guys need a change of scenery" deal.

ReplyDeleteThe sad thing: I read "I can imagine VINCE consoling Stephanie during one of their anal sessions."
ReplyDeleteEven sadder: I somehow didn't strike me as unlikely.
Taboo though it may be, Incest has a long history in human culture. We're not merely perverted for accepted that there is a possiblity.
ReplyDeleteAnd that's why basketball will always be Sports Entertainment to me.
ReplyDeleteOJ Mayo, Hedo Turkoglu, Rashard Lewis are the biggest names who've been caught but it's silly to assume that it's just them. People said the same things about baseball but as today's news shows. Basketball PEDs wouldn't be as much about building muscle as about speeding recovery time (NBA regular season is brutal) and recovering from injury.
ReplyDeleteIn Wade's case his facial structure has changed so much over the 10 years he's been in the public eye.
ReplyDeleteCurtis Axel is supposedly Triple H's big pet project.
ReplyDeleteWhen was the last time they were under 2.6? Anyone know?
ReplyDeleteLast time they had a shockingly bad rating, we got a crazy Russo overbooked show the following week, with Vince Vs. Punk. I f'ing loved it.
ReplyDeleteI remember a couple summers ago when Labron was still on the Cavs when he came into a year a full 30 pounds heavier than the year before. A baseball player does that there are steroids mentioned every time his name comes up, Labron does it and its, wow look at the way he transformed himself.
ReplyDeleteCan't cosign this - the Spurs play such a fluid P&R with Parker and Ginobili, Duncan's post turnaround is the only one I've seen better than Rasheed Wallace's, Gregg Popovich is the NBA's premier promo man... the Spurs are fun for the basketball nerd.
ReplyDeleteThe Heat on the other hand could bring us back into the bad old days of the 90s where each team is going to try to find a guy to play Heroball.
ReplyDeleteIf you think the Heat play heroball like in 2010, you haven't been watching their games.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure he's not opposed to paying guys but in the new world with the luxury tax, even the richest team (Lakers) is looking to cut costs any way they can. Given Miami's tax situation bringing Birdman back for a semi-reasonable contract like 5 million/year would end up costing Arison somewhere between 14-20 million depending on Miller's status and yet to be determined tax numbers.
ReplyDeleteIt's not that he can't afford it and it's not that he won't end up paying that, but it's a pretty big number to swallow.
Workin out great for Sin Cara, ain't it?
ReplyDeletePlus you could have Russo book an angle on how Chris Anderson was investigated for being a Pedo by the FBI right before the nuggets released him. Ratings gold!
