And welcome to what will be the final ROH TV review, at least for a while. With my new job I simply don’t have time for it anymore, and to be honest I need a break anyway. I might pick it up again if my schedule changes, we’ll just have to see how it goes. Hopefully I go out on a good show…
Quick news: Adam Cole won’t be going to WWE anytime soon, as he re-signed with ROH last week. One guy you won’t be seeing anytime soon however is Mike Mondo, who was canned a couple weeks back after showing up “in no condition to participate” to a clinic. All reports have said it was due to coming back too soon from the broken leg, not the Sabu/Jeff Hardy “in no condition to participate”. That seems a little extreme to me, I can understand telling him that they won’t use him anymore until they feel he’s ready, but why fire him, especially when your full time roster is… actually 33 people according to rohwrestling.com, which is a lot more then I thought. There’s been rumors that ROH is trying to weed out all the people that were tight with Jim Cornette (they know each other from OVW), so that may be a factor.
QT Marshall & RD Evans vs. TaDarius Thomas & ACH vs. Caprice Coleman & Cedric Alexander: Winner of this gets a tag title shot at Best in the World, Corino spends most of the match bitching about how there’s no S.C.U.M. guys in the match (Corino on C+C: “These guys lose all the time!”). 3-way brawl with Marshall, Thomas, and Alexander to start, with Alexander getting the better of it. Coleman slingshots in with a senton, but Marshall nails him from behind, who then takes some kicks from Thomas. ACH in now, but Evans sneaks up behind him with a full nelson and he gets double-teamed by the white boys, including a nice reverse powerslam from Marshall for a 2 count. Most of the guys end up on the floor and Alexander hits a somersault dive to the floor. Back in the ring ACH gets a slingshot Stunner on Marshall, Evans makes the save but takes the Space Flying Tiger Drop from Thomas and we head to commercial.
We return with ACH getting a headscissors on Coleman, but he catches a boot to the face from Evans. Thomas walks into a jawbreaker from Coleman, who is then taken out from behind by Marshall. ACH hits a modified Russian legsweep on Evans, Marshall makes the save and we have a 6-man KO. Marshall takes an accidental shot in the balls from Thomas (Corino: “He hit him in the ding-ding!” Kelly: “Are you in first grade?”), be he recovers to do the idiotic Scott Hall “I’m going to try my move while standing 6 inches away from the ropes so I can get backdropped to the outside” spot and Thomas sends him to the floor for a decent bump. ACH hits Air Jordan on Marshall and Evans to a big pop, but Overtime finishes Thomas at 6:47 aired to make C+C the #1 contenders. *1/2, just a spotfest, and not the good kind, though at least it wasn’t sloppy. There’s no need for a commercial break in a match that short, either.
Clips of Davey Richards nearly killing Paul London with the double-stomp at Border Wars are shown. They really should have stopped that match right there, having a guy go to the top rope when he’s barely conscious was pretty fucking stupid.
Inside ROH: Mark Briscoe takes us back to his childhood, talking about Jay’s constant bullying. Jay claims that he needed to whip his ass when they were kids to keep him in line, and he’s going to whip his ass again at BitW.
Nigel McGuiness brings out Michael Elgin and Paul London, who were supposed to have a match that’s obviously not happening thanks to the concussion. London looks really out of it, though the weed is likely as responsible for that as the injury. RD Evans and QT Marshall interrupt to burn some time, bitching about the tag title picture. Evans bitch-slaps London, Elgin lays Evans out, Marshall wisely gets the hell out of there… and Tomaso Ciampa (with the cool entrance like he had at Border Wars) attacks, pinballing him between the barricades and dropping him on the entrance ramp. He goes after Evans, who tries to run away but gets caught by Elgin, Ciampa hits Evans with a powerbomb into a backbreaker. Elgin and Ciampa get in each other’s face as we go to break. This segment was about as useless as that yellow lemon-shaped rock. Thanks, Davey…
BJ Whitmer vs. Mike Bennett (w/ Maria Kanellis) vs. Jay Lethal: Corino: “Why is Whitmer in this match?” You read my mind, Steve. Winner of this faces Matt Taven at BitW. Whitmer holds the ropes for Maria so she can get out of the ring, Bennett takes offense to that and attacks him from behind. Lethal goes after Bennett and he and Whitmer double-team Bennett as Maria joins the commentators. The camera focuses on her even more than they usually do, making it pretty hard to even tell what’s going on the ring. Lethal hits a dropkick on Bennett for 2 as Truth Martini makes his way out to scout his client’s next opponent. Bennett gets a spinebuster on Lethal, then flapjacks Whitmer onto him. He plays to the crowd, but they don’t seem too interested in the match in general. He runs into a boot from Whitmer on a blind charge and Whitmer chops away in the corner. He hits a jumping knee and an exploder suplex on Lethal, then suplexes him into Bennett in the corner. Lethal reverses an Irish whip, but his knee is still messed up and Bennett sends him to the floor before running into a powerslam from Whitmer. Whitmer plays to the crowd now (getting NO reaction at all) and he walks into a superkick from Bennett for 2 and we go to commercial.
We’re back with Bennett beating on Whitmer in the corner and Lethal still on the floor. Bennett crotches himself on the second rope and Lethal comes in with a springboard dropkick on Whitmer. Handspring elbow and the Lethal Combination on Bennett, Whitmer makes the save. Jay calls for the Lethal Injection but catches a knee to the back. Rolling neckbreaker into a Northern Lights from Whitmer, Bennett makes the save. Box Office Smash by Bennett on Whitmer gets 2, but Lethal nails him with a diamond cutter and tries for Hail to the King, but Whitmer crotches him on the top rope. Superplex is blocked, Whitmer gets an exploder on Bennett and tries the pin, so Lethal just drops the elbow on the back of Whitmer’s head. Lethal dumps Bennett and the Lethal Injection finishes Whitmer at 9:09 shown. **1/2, this was fine, though the commentary was really distracting. Maria yells at Whitmer (just stirring shit up for the sake of stirring shit up) and Bennett attacks to close out the show.
Well, it’s been fun. Adam Curry, signing off… for now.

Well, it’s been fun. Adam Curry, signing off… for now.
The ROH contract Adam Cole signed means nothing. They all have WWE outs in the contracts. Its how Bennett was able to leave.
ReplyDeletethanks a lot for your reviews, Adam.
ReplyDeleteThanks for doing this Adam, it's been fun. I'm sad to see ROH recaps die here on the blog :(
ReplyDeleteI know they have outs, but I thought I heard that Bennett's contract expired before the talks of him going to the WWE even started, as he was working other company's iPPVs for example before he even had the hiatus from ROH.
ReplyDeleteI'll be honest, I'm surprised you didn't quit sooner. ROH has been mostly terrible for a long time now and barring some unforseen influx of talent, looks like their boom from the early 00's is pretty much long and done.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Murphy will pick up reviewing them again, now that he's back full time.
Am I the only one around here who will take an ROH ppv over a TNA ppv any day of the week?
ReplyDeleteSure, but if he's planning on leaving than why would he re-sign?
ReplyDeleteThey're not dead, just on hiatus for a while.
ReplyDeleteAnytime, buddy.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. It isn't what it was, but it's better than WWE and TNA's PPV content. And that's really sad on TNA's behalf, because they have a good roster and only 4 ppvs per year.
ReplyDeleteI've never been disappointed with the wrestling content of an ROH PPV, WWE PPV's often leave me angry at the overwhelming stupidity when they're over.
ReplyDeleteI'll also be honest, I was considering it even before I got the new job. Not really because of the quality (I only started watching ROH when the Sinclair show started anyway) but just to burnout, it was satrting to feel more like a chore than something fun. Like I said, I need a break. But I do plan on doing them again at some point if Murphy or someone esle doesn't pick them up.
ReplyDeleteI really don't think they'd publicize it like this if they thought he was leaving
ReplyDeleteNo, but I'd rather not watch wrestling at all then watch TNA, so I'm probably not the best guy to ask.
ReplyDeleteI could try it, but I have literally ZERO experience reaping wrestling and I'd be concerned with not being up to the standards of Scott's blog
ReplyDeleteHa, then perhaps my comment below about WWE PPV's is more relevant to you.
ReplyDeleteNeither did I. Hell, unlike some of the other guys that post here I've never even been "trained" as a writer of any kind. Give it a shot, man.
ReplyDeleteSucks that you're done with the ROH recaps, but you went out on an OK at best show. The opener could've been worse (two of ROH's worst guys (God's Punishment and your favorite TD) + ROH's sloppiest team (Iesha and Shaniqua) = be glad no one botched anything), the main was as good as it was going to be considering the players (Lethal can't carry two guys, especially not the Prodigette and Blowjob), and I really hope someone pulls the Dominant Male aside and says, "I am BEGGING you to drop Project Ciampa. BEGGING. Stick with that move you hit Marshall with, that looked cool and it's better for your knee."
ReplyDeleteAnd you definitely went out on some good news: No more of "No Talent" Mike Mondo! That's a win, jack!
*raises a glass* To Adam Curry. The best ROH TV recapper in the history of this blog.
Me either, especially for what they cost. Atually, I thought Border Wars wasn't too good, but not show is going to be great.
ReplyDeleteEh, I liked Boarder Wars better then you, but it was the weakest I-PPV of the year thus far.
ReplyDeleteWell, you were also there live, so that probably helps..
ReplyDeleteif Murphy doesn't want his column back I'll give it a shot and send something to Scott. Murphy should get priority though
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot man. Like I said below though, I'm not "done", just on hiatus for a while.
ReplyDeleteAlways does, Steen vs Elgin was more then just match of the year, It was actual Magic live
ReplyDeleteMurphy makes it seem like he doesn't even watch ROH anymore, but yeah, you should probably ask him first.
ReplyDeleteRegaurding Project Ciampa: On the one hand, I agree because of what it does to his knees, on the other IT'S SO FUCKING COOL. Compromise and only use it rarely Burning Hammer Style?
ReplyDeleteI'm sure he'll see this thread and give his two cents
ReplyDeleteThanks for doing these, Adam.
ReplyDeleteI've followed ROH mostly through these for a while now. I was never a Steen fan and I've cooled considerably on Davey Richards (I got tired of the shoot-beat people up and then break character and praise the guy you just wrestled schtick) and there's just a dearth of talent in ROH at this point.
Which brings me to a question: is that because the boom of talent from 2000-2009 is over or because of ROH not attracting top-flight talent? Look at the talent who passed through ROH: CM Punk, Daniel Bryan Danielson, Austin Aries, Christopher Daniels, Seth Rollins, Samoa Joe, and Low-Ki. Pretty much every indie star except Ambrose passed through.
So is there a dearth of young wrestling talent at the moment or is it that ROH is not seen as a desirable venue to wrestle in?
I think a lot of it is that there was just a weird indy boom in the early 2000's, who on the indy's is WWE quality and not in ROH? There's Cabana--but not a whole lot of guys after that
ReplyDeleteI had the TLC 6-man as MOTY. Elgin/Steen I had 4th, behind that, Punk/Bryan, and Styles/Daniels from Destination X (the last TNA show I watched, and probably the last one I ever will watch). Either way, it's like talking about if you'd rather fuck Jessica Alba or Shakira, you're having a good time no matter what.
ReplyDeleteEddie Edwards? I didn't articulate my question well. ROH books a lot of guys in the stoic warrior role (Davey and Eddie jump to mind).
ReplyDeleteBorder Wars was solid but unspectacular. I thought Supercard of Honor 7 was great, though. Jay Lethal vs. Michael Elgin was as good if not better than Undertake and CM Punk’s
ReplyDeletematch. It was a great demonstration of how to keep building layers to a match. It told a great David and Goliath story. You were not aware which direction the match was heading. And they fabulously read the crowd. Especially with the Macho Man elbow spots. Superb match all around for sure, and was
pretty much worth the price of the show alone.
Now I'm really confused, Eddie is in ROH, how is that relative ROH not being a desirable venue to work. My point is that ROH probable has the best permanent roster on the indies
ReplyDeleteThat Match where Elgin so clearly beat Lethal makes it clear who the next ROH champ HAS to be. Elgin is the man--put the belt on him as soon as possible--hell they are running a show at freaking Maple Leaf Gardens in August--you won't get a better time then that
ReplyDeleteI misread your question. Yeah, I'm not too up on indies so I didn't know if Chikara or Gabe's promotion had good guys.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the support, man. As for your question, I think it's a bit of both. The whole Cornette era left a stink on this promotion that's going to take a while to shake off, but even then there's not much talent out there at the moment. ACH was one of the best prospects out there and they got him, Samuray Del Sol (probably not spelling that right) and Sami Callahan are headed to the WWE... outside of AR Fox I can't think of anyone I would really go after, at least as far as U.S.-based talent goes. Maybe John Morrison... If I were them I'd go after Karl Anderson and Taiji Ishimori and push the fuck of out them.
ReplyDeleteOk, now I get it. There are a few guys ROH doesn't have which hurt (you have no idea how much I miss the Young Bucks--Sami Callihan and Eddie Kingston are in this category as well) but Elgin, Steen, Lethal, Strong, Edwards, Cole--there isn't really a whole lot of Indy guys BETTER then them
ReplyDelete1000% on Ishimori. Callahan's WWE bound? Scratch him off my list of guys I'd like to see ROH sign. Leaves Eddie Kingston, Colt Cabana and the Young Bucks--but Cabana has made it clear he doesn't want to work with the company
ReplyDeleteSmart move considering the non-push he got when he was there. And I consider the Bucks overrated. Like they're trying to be the Hardys in their prime and they're not pulling it off. (Kingston I haven't seen enough of to say one way or another.)
ReplyDeleteEverything you need to see of Kingston
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1AGjIQKxNE
I would put up the majority of TNA's ppvs over the last year vs. ROH. This last one was not indicative of how good they've been.
ReplyDeleteAnd still leave the possibility of royally screwing up his knee. Put it like this: The fact that he hit Evans with it and not God's Punishment tells me all I need to know. (i.e. he didn't trust Marshall to take it right, and that's not a move you should use on any basis, especially with one bad wheel.)
ReplyDeleteor he didn't want to do that move outside the ring and fuck up his back on the concrete floor.
ReplyDeleteI didn't see the last one, I am comparing to the TNA shows from the last year.
ReplyDeleteI think Cole is next in line for the big push, which might be a mistake.
ReplyDeleteIt's heel Cole though, he refused the code of honor after losing to roddy in Texas. Weasly heel Cole vs dominant strongman face Elgin--rit could work
ReplyDeleteGo do it. I'll support you.
ReplyDeleteSorry so see you go. This was really the only way in which I followed ROH. This promotion seems fucked, though. Corny really ruined things.
ReplyDeleteAdams reviews are awesome. They'll be missed here. Justin from the PTB Podcast writes them as well.
ReplyDeletehttp://placetobenation.com/justins-ring-of-honor-recap-6113/
Thanks for the support. I'll see if i can put anything together after this weeks episode (assuming Murphy doesn't object)
ReplyDeleteI'm not going anywhere, just taking a break from the reviews for a while.
ReplyDeleteWell that's good. I think the guy at 411 stopped reviewing the TV shows so maybe I will give the guy in te above link a shot
ReplyDeleteThe guy at 411 sucked anyway, though one of the guys over there does a quickie review in his weekly news column.
ReplyDeleteNot to defend Cornette because he turned it into Smoky Mount of Honor but Hunter Johnston wasn't doing much better before Cornette. I'd take Pearce over both of them.
ReplyDeleteDelerious seems to be a good job trying to turn it around booking-wise, The problem is that the roster needs an overhaul. BJ Whitmer, QT Marsall, Cliff Compton, Rhett Titus, and a couple other contribute nothing and aren't over. Get rid of them.
ReplyDeleteThe Bucks had a match on ROH TV last August with Coleman and Alexander that I thought was a legit MOTYC, I'd say ****1/4. That's the only match with them that I think I've seen though.
ReplyDeleteSo will I. I hope someone takes over the reviews, had I known for more than a few days that I was going to give them up I would have tried finding a replacement.
ReplyDeleteI like your reviews a lot, I just never comment on them because all I really have to say is "How do you sit through this shit?" I'm just not a TNA guy, period. Do you like ECW? It would be pretty cool if someone did a weekly Hardcore TV review.
ReplyDeleteWow you are such an idiot.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I appreciate it. I say that about my reviews because I do a poor job editing. Yeah, the stuff I review is a lot of stuff that people haven't seen (TNA Weekly PPVs, 1984 WWF) but I chose that because I thought it would be different and I could educate myself and fans, as weird as that sounds. I don't have any ECW stuff to review as I no longer have Classics on Demand. I didn't want to infringe on Gary, Tommy, or Logan either and review stuff that they were doing.
ReplyDeleteI actually have considered reviewing shoot interviews. I have several YouShoots, Timelines, and some RF Video ones. I was considering starting a poll about which shoot people wanted me to review.
To answer everyonr, I would, but I'm in no position to watch ROH. It doesn't air on TV up here and I only get online through my smartphone these days, and my signal is rarely good enough up here in the sticks to watch the whole show. I'm sticking to opinion pieces and retro DVD recaps, and hopefully resuming Inside the Indies soon, so I welcome anyone who wants to give recapping ROH a shot. I'm pretty much the one who brought ROh recaps to the BoD (except for Colin Rinehart's excellent ppv reviews) and I definitely want to see it continued.
ReplyDeleteI think your editing is fine, though I know what you mean, I'm kind of a perfectionist with these, which is why they take me so long. That and the fact that I'm an incredibly slow typist. But you still always miss something...
ReplyDeleteI couldn't do shoot interview reviews, but I'll fox with ya, put me down for Kevin Nash. I got a couple WWE PPVs on my HD that I always said I review and there's a few more I'd like to take a crack at (KOTR 95 for one, I just want to do a review where I can totally shit all over the entire thing), so I'll be posting more stuff, only not on any kind of schedule.
I should never be glad to see someone lose their job, but good riddance to Mondo. Now if only someone would break QT Marshall's leg.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with the group here, Adam's reviews have always been rock-solid. Lets me feel like I know what's up with ROH with minimum effort on my part.
ReplyDeleteHear, hear. I always enjoyed Murphy's rants and raves; I'm a fan.
ReplyDeleteMe too. I kind of feel like an asshole here, I didn't even give Scott (and everyone else) 2 weeks notice or anything. Kyle Warne says he's willing to give it a shot though, and I'm willing to bet he'll be pretty good if he does.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the vote of confidence guys! Don't feel bad Adam, life happens. I'm gonna do it, I'll recap this weekend's show. Should I just send it to Scot's mailbag or should I send it to you Adam
ReplyDeleteRhett Titus needs to go back to playing his old "Addicted To Love" gimmick, A.S.A.P. That was the only thing he had going for him.
ReplyDeleteSend it to Scott, he's the only one that can give you posting privliges. If he likes it he'll put it up, one or two more and he'll show you how to post it yourself. And I'll put in a good word for you if you need it.
ReplyDeleteRhett Titus needs to fuck off, IMO. If he was in this room right now and wanted to shake my hand I'd decline, just because it's June and I don't feel like going out to the carhole to get my winter jacket and gloves,
ReplyDeleteRock Solid would be a great nickname for a wrestler.
ReplyDeleteDon't sugarcoat it, tell us how you really feel.
ReplyDeleteRhett's what I call a "mirror partner". Stick him in a team with a good wrestler and he's OK, stick him with a bad wrestler and he's shit. That's why ANX worked, and why he and Compton are starting to work, and why he and Blowjob were a shit idea from day 1. As a single he's eh. (Not gonna hold that I Quit match from the last PPV against him, though, cause as i said, Blowjob.)
...I guess ill join the circle-jerk and give you some props for reviewing ROH...
ReplyDelete*salute*
its still full of nobodies.
That match was a bad idea from the word "go".
ReplyDelete
