Scott Keith in USA?

We know you know you are staunchly Canadian but here's a question for ya.

1. Have you ever been to America for a wrestling event or otherwise?
2. What is your thought of America in general? (The people, the places etc)
3. Would you like to move here?
4. (Follow-up to #1) If you've never been to a wrestling event, would you like to goto Wrestlemania? (if you have) Again?

1
.  Of course!  I detailed my trip to Las Vegas in 2002 in the Judgment Day rant.
2.  It seemed hot and booze was much more readily available than I was used to.
3.  Given my only exposure was to Vegas, I can give a hearty NO to that.  Man cannot gamble and eat cheap lobster all year, it's not natural.
4.  Love to go to Wrestlemania, probably never will, and I'm OK with that.  My goal is more getting to go to UFC at some point.  Plus going to Paul McCartney last November pretty much covered most of my bucket list concert/event needs anyway.

Comments

  1. Little known fact, but Canada has secretly taken over about 50 percent of the US now because we blend in so easily.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I've been to three WrestleManias and went to the UFC headlined by Jones-Evans, and honestly Mania was a much cooler experience. I'm about as diehard a UFC fan as it gets, but they have nothing to fill the down time between fights for the live crowd, and frankly many of the UFC fans made wrestling crowds look like civil, well-adjusted people.

I still had a good time, but the live experience is the one area I think UFC can improve upon, production-wise.

    ReplyDelete
  3. A man can't gamble and eat lobster all year? Tell that to Pete Rose. Granted, he sucks at gambling discreetly and eats his lobster out of trashcans, but he somehow still manages to haunt Las Vegas on a constant basis.

    ReplyDelete
  4. He is a Real Canadian! (eh)
Fights for his right to Tim Horton's!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Scott just a quick FYI, Vegas is not exactly an accurate slice of life in the rest of America. Your Vegas rant in that judgement day review was epic but you definitely traveled a little light (with cash).
If you ever travel to the best part of america (southern cali) I volunteer to be your host/tour guide. I've got a season pass to SeaWorld/ the zoo/ SD wild animal park and live near a beach. I would consider you visiting royalty and would make sure you were treated as such. They are doing summerslam out here every year now I guess, so its not quite as cool as a wm but there's an outside chance Daniel Bryan is gonna be in the main event.

    ReplyDelete
  6. We can all differ on if he should be in the hall of fame, or his place in history, but everyone can get together about how great his hair cut was!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Yeah this...Vegas isn't indicative of how the country is.

In short, the East Coast are angry people, the midwest are hicks, and the West are laid back hippies.

    ReplyDelete
  8. That guy's barber is a fucking artist.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yeah. Detroit is indicative of how the country is!

    ReplyDelete
  10. If that country is the thunder dome!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Anyone remember that old SNL skit Amerida?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I feel like lots of people are going to point out the exceptions to this but as an american I say that's a fair statement

    ReplyDelete
  13. Tell that to the shitty Quebec drivers that come to South Florida every winter. Wait, does Quebec count as part of Canada? ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Isn't San Diego the place where people go to strip naked and jack off on the streets?

    ReplyDelete
  15. If you think you needed to bring a lot of money to go to Vegas, bring double to go to NY or LA. That, and a ton of patience to put up with ridiculous traffic.

    ReplyDelete
  16. And South Florida is a foreign country. Hey-oooohhhh!!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Actually went to Vegas last July, and I had an AWESOME time. I recommend if you DO go back in the near future, Scott, to go to Rock N Rita's @ Circus Circus and try The Crapper, a $25 concoction with 44 oz. of booze in a small ceramic toilet you get to keep.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I did WM22 in Chicago (HHH/Cena, Edge/Foley) and it was a pretty cool experience. But now that they have gone to these super-duper 250,000 seat stadium manias, I cant say I would enjoy anymore.

And oh yeah, San Diego is a much bigger slice of American pie. Maybe throw in Denver if you want to get lost in the mountains, or even Chicago for real fun. Cant remotely judge the US on Vegas alone.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I went to WM in Miami and can't recall anything entertaining between fights.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Totally agree with this one. I've only been to San Diego once (not for the Comicon, btw) and enjoyed every minute of it. 70s all day, 60s all night, beautiful downtown, Sea World, the SD Zoo, the beaches in La Jolla, it ruled the roost.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I went to WM this year in a stadium and I had previously gone to the 2011(? the year ADR wone) RR in an arena. Gotta say, I enjoyed the RR a lot more. I felt really disconnected from the other fans and the actual wrestling in the stadium setting.

    ReplyDelete
  22. No way. The best vacation spot in America is NOLA, hands down. And, no, I do not and never have lived in the south. But NOLA is awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I know a few people out here from BC and they talk about french Canadians the way I imagine Americans talked about black people in the 70's

    ReplyDelete
  24. I do remember a country where you didn't have to punt on third down,

    ReplyDelete
  25. I agree with you, but I think in Scotts rant he said he only brought 100 bucks in spending money to lv so even with cheap south western prices thats a tough stretch.
NY traffic is mind blowing but at least they have real public transportation unlike LA. But the 5 in LA is OK if you u can avoid it 3 to 7 in the pm. In SD it can be stop and go traffic at times on the freeways so u gotta spring for the fast pass!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm bookmarking this post and trying that next time I'm there. Sounds like the best novelty glass ever

  27. Come to San Diego There’s so much to see… From the sparkling waters of Mission Bay, to the warm tortillas of Old Town. And after a day of sightseeing, why not try spankin’ it on one of our city streets? San Diego, come, take a load off.

    Jackin’ it, jackin’ it, jackety-jack.

  32. NoLa was the last city to allow 18 and over drinking. My cousin went to Loyola from 88-92 and I graduated from HS in 91, so I used to hop in the car and take the 12 hour drive and spend a week with him for Mardis Gras...greatest party time of my life and didn't need a fake ID, plus no open container laws. Reminded me of my vacations to Spain.

Next on the list: mail-order bride.

  34. Also you could go to bound for glory in san diego this october

  35. For the canadians/non-americans out there: were all-american lex luger and hacksaw jim duggan the biggest heels in your countries?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I've never been but it might be time to change that. It seems like the craziest place in america but with great food. The only knock I can put on it is the pelicans would be the worst name for a ball club if it wasn't for the wizards. Either way I really want to go there

    ReplyDelete
  37. No. They just sucked.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Holy shit its at viejas!!?? I'm so going. Its a little off to the east (more el cajon) but god damn I'm so going. Hopefully the hulkster really isn't in the main event but even still...

    ReplyDelete
  39. If I had to do it again. . .

    ReplyDelete
  40. What are you so upset aboot?

    ReplyDelete
  41. I was four years old. The year was 1989. The place : Maple Leaf Gardens. I watched as my own countrymen chanted "USA-USA" at that lumber-toting buffoon.

I was shocked and dismayed then. Still am.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I remember going to a house show as a kid (around 88-89) in my hometown of Quebec City and Duggan got the french speaking crowd to chant USA.

It was not the biggest chant but still. I think most people did not speak english and just chanted something that sounded like USA but still.

As for Luger, he was treated like a midcard babyface. Bret was the man in Canada at that time at there was a lot of resentment over the pushed he got and the lack of push that Bret got.

    I'm Canada, so I'll play.

I've been to Boston and Florida. I loved both. I saw Orlando and Miami, did all the tourist stuff, but the best time I had in Florida was renting a condo on the beach in Sarasota. It was driving distance to malls, walking distance to coffee shots, there was a restaurant and bar down the street...that's the life. For some reason I've always wanted to live in America. I'm not an overly patriotic Canadian - I find there to be an irony to Canadians feeling they're better than everyone else in part because they're nice and humble. But that's me.

It saddens me to realize there's almost nothing that could get me to go to a wrestling event live. If I'm in the area, probably but I'm not going out of my way for it. A Shawn Michaels or Steve Austin comeback match is about all I can think of.

I just considered Canada part of America and cheered for Luger, but I'd rather it have been Bret being the top face at the time. It wasn't about him being Canadian I guess I just liked him more.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'd really love to go to El Cajon, for reasons that would make sense to no one but me.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm from Canada, And the society and media that I am constantly surrounded by is practically begging me to actively dislike Americans.

I find the perception I end up with is that socially conservative values dominate the place.

Of course, knowing of Americans from here and through other hobbies, I know that I must try and keep my head above what I see on tv (RISE ABOVE HATE).

But MAN, the media up here is not kind to you guys.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Speaking as a border dweller who lives in America but sees Canadians every day, listens to Canadian radio stations (and lives amongst legions of Tragically Hip fanatics, while I'm all over here like "Matt Mays and El Torpedo muthafucka!") And watches Canadian TV stations (I liked the pre-Drake Degrassi, thanks), I feel like a half breed in these conversations. I will say that Quebecers are shitty drivers and rude assholes, and people from Ontario aren't much better though.

    ReplyDelete
  54. The media's mostly right,I'm afraid.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Any Canadian who chants USA for Duggan is a damned idiot.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Whereabouts in So Cal do you live? Where are the best places in So Cal to live, in your opinion?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Yeah, we'd all like to go to Wrestlemania ....
... wait, what were *you* talking about?

    ReplyDelete
  58. This is funny because as a Canadian, substitute "Ontario & Quebec" for "East Coast" and you have Canada.

    ReplyDelete
  59. LA has a pretty decent mass transit system...strangely enough.

    ReplyDelete
  60. "70s all day, 60s all night,"

  61. Growing up in St. Louis (BOO!) and having traveled much of the country, it's best to say America is a conglomeration of little countries, and everyone can find something they like. I really liked NorCal, WA, OR and New England. I'd live in Maine or Boston tomorrow.

  66. I live in downtown San Diego by Petco park. The best places to live are costal. The further east you get the worse is it (as far as crime, heat, lack of nice places etc.)

I honestly believe San Diego is the best place to live. Perfect weather, people are so so friendly, and Theres so much to do. In San Diego I would say point loma, downtown, pacific beach, ocean beach, LA Jolla, and old town, and maybemission bay are tthe good places to live. Lots and lots of people live further north in oceanside and Carlsbad (home to Lego Land!) and they have nice weather and beaches but they also have tons of marines and army dudes, and frankly lots of white trash (in the average people areas, Theres obviously super rich areas up there but I'm just a normal dude). San Diego is place where everyone is happy every day because we all live here and we know how bomb it is.
Riverside county is north of SD, my impression is lots of skin heads and crime and no beaches because its mountainy. Avoid.
Orange county is above that (Anaheim etc), its more developed, so lots of sprawl and similar looking houses etc, I've never spent much time there but its a growing area with lots of industry and rent is cheaper.
Los Angles (unlike SD which everyone would love) is not for everybody. Its dirty and smoggy, but Theres iconic places, great beaches, hot girls, and you will see celebrities every where. However lots of people have snobby attitudes, Theres crime, racial tensions, car theft etc. The city is broken into tons of different neighborhoods, each with its own character. Places like Westwood, bel air, Santa Monica are cool. Just think costal.
I would highly recommend SD over anywhere else. The one catch about socal is the cost of living. People freak when they hear what my rent is, and houses are only 7 figures and up. But you could buy a condo. Also taxes out the ass. Also I know for a fact my employer excepts people to take a discount to live here. However the weather is perfect, the girls are beautiful and down to earth, and you could go to the beach everyday. If you have any specific questions I'd be happy to answer them because I love it here.

Orange county is north of north county la

  71. I go to san diego 1-2x/year because my aunt & uncle live in del mar (north san diego for non-socal people). I agree with everything you said about san diego. However, the one area I never go is the area just south of San Diego (near the mexican border). It's way too sketchy in many neighborhoods. My relatives almost never go there.

I used to live in the San Fernando Valley and still work there. It is your typical suburb community with people that just don't want to be bothered. The people commute everywhere and it takes at least 20-30 minutes to go anywhere due to traffic. Adam Carolla has great insight into the Valley due to growing up and living there for 40 years. However, you do see the occasional porn star at the mall or supermarket.

I hate the westside area (santa monica/venice/marina del rey/beverly hills). There is no parking anywhere unless you want to pay $2-10 or walk 2 miles. It takes 10 minutes to go one mile due to lights and street traffic. It is all hipsters that want to be noticed and be trendy.

I just moved to the Santa Clarita Valley/Valencia area and I really enjoy it. If you watch the end to National Lapoon's Vacation or the beginning of Step by Step, that's the local amusement park. They also film NCIS and wipeout here.
Everything is within a 5-10 minute drive. People are super friendly. There is no graffiti anywhere. They really made this into a great planned community with biking/walking trails everywhere, everything is close, and the people really care about the community. Since I moved here, I go for a walk about 5-6x a week and I will always see about 10 people biking/running/walking (tonight I saw about 50 people).

  72. So it's like Katrina never happened now?

    ReplyDelete
  73. Completely random, but I'm watching the Yankees at Oakland, and I fucking love that Josh Reddick is using Bret Hart's (OLD!) entrance music for his walk ups to the plate.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Well dude we are the lucky ones getting to live here. Life is good.

I agree that anywhere south of downtown sd, from chula vista to San yisidro is probably to be avoided. I really only consider san Diego to be from downtown to LA Jolla on the i-5, anything north or south seems different. However del mar is a really nice, scenic area. Huge fan. I could see that being a sweet place to live

"I find the perception I end up with is that socially conservative values dominate the place."

It depends on where in the U.S. you go. New England, New York, the West coast, and a lot of big cities in other states? Pretty liberal for the most part. Anything in the South or Midwest, or even small towns/the sticks in more liberal states? Most definitely. It's about 50/50 overall I'd say, thanks to most inner-city people being pretty liberal.

"Of course, knowing of Americans from here and through other hobbies, I know that I must try and keep my head above what I see on tv (RISE ABOVE HATE)."

Knowing many Canadians IRL (I live right on the border, in fact you can see Canada from my mom's house where I grew up, and I lived in Toronto for a really breif period) I can say there is just as many docuhebag dickhead assholes up there as there is here. And probably in every other country on Earth...

"But MAN, the media up here is not kind to you guys."

I wouldn't say that, the Canadian media just tells it like it is. Now the BBC? THEY are not kind to us.

  80. It also has some awesome cultural attractions. Surprisingly good museums, tons of history, and some interesting local ecosystem. You really need to be up for 20 hours a day to take full advantage of everything. Can't overstate how great it is for vacationing.

  87. WWE's pre-match video packages for Mania are off the charts. Way better than UFC's black-and-white trash talk videos that have been the same since 2005.

Also, there was actual fan interaction at Mania. We talked to the people near us, and there were a few promos (though the lack of Rock promo was disappointing). NOTHING happens at UFC between fights. Literally. We don't even get audio of Rogan and Dana's pre-show hype job.
