D-Bry Madness?

Magoonie sent this in right after Raw...

"Wow...that was Bryan's Randy Savage Moment. Remember...The Macho Man beat the One Man Gang by DQ too. The only difference is that we have to wait a few weeks for the Finals"

Makes a good amount of sense, and would have made even more had they done it on the go-home show to SummerSlam. Still, it's pretty cool to see such a ground-swell of fan support actually get a guy to the top. Then they put him out there to perform, and he does so in spades. He got a good match out of Ryback, and neither Cena nor Punk could accomplish that. Daniel is also like Macho in that you could put him in any era, in any company, and he'd still get over with what he's doing. WWE should have no fear of pushing him to the moon, because the kids can get behind him just as much as Cena, if not more. Looking like Cena ain't gonna happen unless you have the world's greatest genetics, but looking like D-Bry? Sure. Hell, and they're even dating the same chick.

Dig it. Mad freak out!

  1. The booking has me deeply worried that the SummerSlam main event will be a triple threat.

  2. I have Daniel Bryan pegged as the next Randy Savage, without a doubt.

However, I also had Kendall Windham pegged as the next Steve Austin, so you know.

  3. I think the "That guy could be me" thing works more on adults than kids. When I was a kid, I still thought I could look like the Ultimate Warrior. I had to grow up a bit before I knew better.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yeah, same here. I was really disillusioned when I looked in the mirror one day and realized I was twice as ripped as Warrior.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Here's the worry - Scott mentioned it in his rant last night, but what if the rating tanks?

I think the same thing happened in 2000 when Rock was off filming Mummy Returns and they compensated by putting on three Jericho matches in one night. The ratings dropped by a fairly large amount, and Jericho's push stalled out soon thereafter.

  6. WWE should never base their decisions off one night, if the ratings continue to take a dip while daniel bryan is the focus, then they should be concerned. Bare in mind Ratings should mean a hell of a lot less today than it did in 2000, thanks to the rise in DVR's and social media scores and all sorts of different ways of measuring how much interest there is in a particular talent.

  7. I would love to call BS on that, but thinking about it...they probably would like Ryback to take Bryan's pin so Cena doesn't have to.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Has anyone been pushed so hard on one episode of raw before? Not only do you get HHH and Cena basically verbally blowing Dbry on air, not only do we get him kicking ass and looking tough as hell for about 40 minutes straight, but we also get a (totally scripted) look at what Dbry gave up being vegan for...in the shape of a nice little brown erect nipple.

Basically...it must be real good to be Daniel Bryan right about now.

    ReplyDelete
  9. That's fine if it leads to Bryan-Cena at Survivor Series with Bryan winning there.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Or more likely, Cena pinning Ryback to retain.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yeah none of us can bitch about D-Bry's push for the last month. Granted they can always screw it up, but they've done more than right by him.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Good point. Kids want the larger than life guys. Bryan has more of a Muppet appeal, he's shaggy he is loud, and he has a funny bit he does. Remember, the little cancer kid want Bryan, not Cena, and that was when Bryan was full heel.

    ReplyDelete
  13. "Daniel is also like Macho in that you could put him in any era, in any company, and he'd still get over with what he's doing."
I completely disagree, Caliber. The non-steroid era that WWE mostly enjoys right now is perfect for a small guy like Bryan. DB would have gotten lost in the shuffle in the mid-80s behind The Ultimate Warrior and Hogan. Savage was 50-60 lbs heavier than Bryan is.
On the other hand put Bryan in the ring with 90s Shawn Michaels or Bret Hart, and the new generation era would have spectacular.

  14. That was a loaded "you can't wrestle" chant--more of a "we just had a dbry / Cesaro classic and now we get you"

If you really think about it, Bryan's been pushed rather well for almost his entire WWE run, other than in the build-up to Mania 27, and in the time after he won MITB '11. (And in both cases there's precedent— WWE always buries the non-main-event guys in the lad-up to Mania, AND they pretty much always bury the MITB winners so that it'll be a SURPRISE when they finally cash-in. Not saying either case makes sense, but it's what they do.)

Otherwise, Bryan's been booked pretty well:
    - Comeback from the firing as the hyped mystery man in the main event at Summerslam, in which he cleanly eliminates two guys and clearly gets a huge spotlight.
    - Wins US title from Miz, who had a rocketship up his ass at that point.
    - Cleanly defends the US title for months, including some PPV wins against midcarders.

    - OK, Mania 27 cooldown until...

    - Wins MITB
    - Post MITB losing streak, but...

    - Cash-in and a pretty awesome WHC run
    - Sure he loses in 18-seconds to Sheamus, but that's followed up with 4 straight WHC or WWE title PPV matches, in which he's booked strong in every one.
    - Pins Kane at Summerslam
    - 8-month tag title reign in which Bryan gets an insane amount of TV time.
    - Also, Hell No cleanly defended the titles at both the Rumble and Mania, and both times it was Bryan getting the pin/submission.
    - And of course, the awesome post-Mania run which has seen him cleanly defeat Orton, Sheamus, the Shield for their first official loss, and run a gauntlet, as well as basically be the focus of the promotion.

So what am I saying? Basically that I think there's reason to have faith that WWE has always wanted Bryan to succeed. I mean, I'm sure he's blown up way past anything they ever expected, but hell——— I don't think even his most hardcore fans thought he'd be approaching "Is he the next John Cena?" levels. WWE has given him some opportunities over the last few years, and he's made the absolute most of each one. Overall, I think the Daniel Bryan situation (and how WWE has booked him) bodes well for the product going forward.

  16. In that case why not have Cena beat Bryan in a hard fought match. Wouldn't make sense to add Ryback in there if Cena was retaining...of course this is the WWE we are on about..

    ReplyDelete
  17. Somehow, I don't see Bryan saying "SNAP INTO A SLIM JIM! YES! YES! YES!"

    ReplyDelete
  18. 50-60 pounds heavier? Really?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Lets pump the brakes a little bit here. D Bry is awesome and is on fire right now. I always thought of him as kind of a hybrid of Benoit and Owen Hart. Comparing him to Savage just doesn't calculate for me. Savage was a dude who you looked at and thought he was legit insane. Macho Man's outfits, mannerisms, interviews, the Macho Man had swag before there was a such thing. The Mega Power storyline will never be duplicated, and Savage was Mr.Wrestlemania before Shawn Michaels. I'm loving Daniel Bryan and his performance last night was awesome, but saying he's the new Macho Man is a bit of a reach. Certainly we wouldn't say John Cena is the new Hogan, no not even close.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Absolutely true. Steve Austin was a perfect example of that line of thinking hence his popularity.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm okay with Daniel Bryan being the next Daniel Bryan. I've never enjoyed "This guy is the next..." comparisons.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Uh, Caliber, it's a cool observation and all but I didn't send that question in. I sent you the book QOTD for tommorow but that's it. Is there an nWo Magoonie running around?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Magoonies never die!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Cena's been considered by some to be the new Hogan (constantly on top, rumours of some backstage politicking though not to the same extent as Hogan or HHH).

If he's the new Hogan and Bryan is the new Savage, that does mean Cena will stunt this push as much as possible to make himself look better at every turn?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Unless he's committing a wellness violation Bryan is not at his listed weight of 210 pounds. Savage was 245-250. IMO Bryan is 190.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Bryan would have gotten over but he would've been a midcard side attraction like JYD or some other goofy character during that era. More than likely he would've ended up in the AWA, where Verne would've pushed the hell out of him purely for his skill as a technician.

    ReplyDelete
  27. And in my opinion, Savage in the 80's was probably 210. He might have been 245 when he was blown up at the end of his WCW run but that's about it.

I mean, if we wanted to get all Wiki about it, Savage was billed as 237 and Bryan as 210. Both weights are probably off.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It's a huge reach.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I see Bryan much more as the modern Bret Hart, and last night was his KOTR 93.

If anybody's more akin to Savage (and even this is a stretch) it's Punk.

    ReplyDelete
  30. You are crazy. No way Savage was a legit 245 at his peak.

I was the one that sent that post in, and I thought about making the Hart KOTR 93 comparison, but Bret was pretty much already established as the top guy when he won KOTR.

I was actually the one that sent it in.

  33. Before he was Daniel Bryan he was "The American Dragon" Bryan Danielson. The Macho Man's ring name was Randy Savage. In 1993, comic book artist Eric Larsen began publishing a series about a hero named The Savage Dragon. It's all there.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Naw, I think they realize the ship has sailed on Ryback as a main eventer, at least for the time being. I don't think they want him anywhere near the Bryan/Cena main event.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Maybe once they get bryan in that comfortable main event level....like if he's basically CM punk in 2011...and once he gets to Punk '13 level..then he can go for that Dazzler moniker he's wanted, and he can really stretch his character back into the hairy insane crazy lovable main eventer. I'm not expecting anything too dramatic in terms of character for his first year as a main eventer..that comes later.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'd like that, but I'd much rather have Bryan hold the title right now where he's red hot...especially since they seem to want to give the title to orton somewhere down the line.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Now you get it. Somehow the dueling GM's will add Ryback as a "bias choice" and it's a three way feud.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yes. So if Bryan DOES win the belt, he'll still be stuck in the mid-card. And treated like a fluke champion. And that's if he stays a good guy and doesn't get turned heel immediately afterwords....

    ReplyDelete
  39. I"m thinking Bryan (finally) beats Ryback on the last Raw for Summerslam.

    ReplyDelete
  40. While less muscular than guys like The Rock and Triple H, Austin was actually pretty big (at least compared to the average joe). Bryan has a similar physique, but he's way shorter.
