Good Heat

The topic about match results that had people legitimately pissed made me think of the opposite: match results where you were marking out. I'm not talking like "Oh, yeah good for him he won the World Title." I'm talking where you jump off your couch screaming with joy.

A few for me would be Punk walking out of MitB 2011 with the WWE Title, Eddie Guerrero beating Brock Lesnar, and Edge's MitB cash-in on John Cena

In the words of Caliber, how say you?

Steven Richards tapping out HHH at Wrestlemania XX, Dolph Ziggler cashing in on Del Rio, Piper smashing the fuck out of the Flower Shop with a baseball bat while on one leg, Ultimate Warrior squashing Honky Tonk Man at Summerslam, Randy Savage winning his first World title at Wrestlemania IV, Rick Steiner beating Mike Rotundo for the TV title at Starrcade, The Brainbusters winning the tag titles from Demolition (I was an NWA Guy and that was practically a Crockett takeover) and of course Warrior beating Hogan.  Many more, but that's off the top of my head.

Comments

  1. I had to rewind my tape of the Lesnar/Eddie match, because I honestly didn't believe that ending happened. Fucking crazy to me still.

  2. Doesn't Stephanie hate Stevie Richards for the whole Stevie Night Heat thing going on without her knowing? There's no way she'd let that guy go over Trips.

  3. Ziggler cashing in MITB was the last time I really was like that especially after he got out of the armbar

    Miz cashing in MITB contract.

Jericho winning the Undisputed Title (I was in a bar and everyone wanted Rock vs Austin as the main event. When Jericho won the undisputed title, I got some very angry looks towards me so I had to sneak out of there very quickly)

Jericho "beating" HHH on raw for the title

Foley winning his first WWF title

  4. The Rock finally beating Triple H at Backlash 2000, I swear the crowd were celebrating like their team had just won the Superbowl. I felt drained of any energy due to cheering so loud with my friends says this was most definitely THE GOOD type of heat! A great moment in wrestling that seems to get overshadowed a lot IMO.

  6. Formation of the nWo, Rude winning the IC title, Hogan over Savage at Mania, even though I look at it differently now.

Punk winning at MITB in '11, Jericho winning at Vengeance in '01, Edge cashing in MITB. Cena's reception at ONS in '06 was something special, as was his reception at WM 22, when he was still getting mostly positive reactions it seemed (well, most weeks at least I remember him being cheered more so than not - the boos were still there, but it was more like 70/30 if I recall correctly). Seeing Steamboat winning the IC title gave me goosebumps as a kid, & pretty much still does. Seeing the Razor-Shawn ladder match for the first time (which was soon followed by seeing it for the 10th time) was, to quote Vince (at least 10 times that match) "Unbelievable." Sid winning the title at Survivor Series '96 was awesome too. And my more obscure one, also from MITB '11, was Christian winning the World Heavyweight Title...and then getting laid out 3 times. Classic heel Christian. (Bryan winning MITB that night was crazy too.) Gosh...I gotta watch MITB '11 again sometime soon.

  10. I'm almost embarrassed by it, but Lanny Poffo beating Hulk Hogan on SNME. Bouncing off the walls about a countout win.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Kurt Angle's first WWF championship run. My friends and I marked out everytime he didn't lose and I've never marked out harder than in that six month period. (Now admittedly we wanted him to lose, but the heat was so pure amongst my friends, there was so much joy in hating him.)

That whole Team RECK storyline and the announcement of TLC 1. Just amazing.

I was damn near in tears when Eddie won at NWO 2004 (I wasn't aware of the IWC yet, so I had no idea he was going over Brock, so I was fucking shocked in the best way), then when Stevie Night Heat won his big one at last at WMXX and the two of them celebrated in the middle of the ring at MSG to close the night. Somewhere, Kevin Nash was pouting.

Also, CM Punk's win at MITB and Edge cashing it on Cena.

  13. I got choked up when Homicide entered the ROH/CZW Cage of Death match and tossed BJ Whitmer a fork to carve up someone's head.

I know that sounds messed up, but you really need to have experienced that feud to appreciate it.

  14. * Bret winning the title back at WM10

    * Almost any WCW TV title change from the early 1990's. They booked that belt so well with heels retaining through cheap methods (DQs, time limit draws, etc.) that when the heel finally lost, it was like an explosion. I'm referring to the Austin/Orndorff/Regal reigns specifically.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Bret Hart winning his first Intercontinental title and Mankind winning his first WWF title are two that stand out to me. The commentary for the Bret match really takes it up a notch and the crowd's reaction when Austin comes out to help Mankind is nuclear.

    ReplyDelete
  16. One of my favorite WCW memories is of a bunch of white rednecks going crazy that JOHNNY B. BADD won the TV title at Fall Brawl over Regal. Just a really funny situation of Southerners cheering a flamboyant guy (even if Badd had dropped most of that from his persona by that point).

    Rock v Hogan
    Wrestlemania X8

I was a huge Rock mark at the time but was once a Hulkamaniac when I was younger. And while I enjoyed Hollywood Hogan and the nWo I hadn't marked out for anything he did in years so I wasn't expeting much out of the match.

The initial promo was money but everything after that was meh, but I still expected myself to cheer Rock on for the match.

Instead, the minute Hogan shoved Rock away out of a lock up and then started with his pose routine I lost my shit. My friend too. Then it happened again and Hogan decided to cup his ear this time, I was in full mark out mode. Suddenly, the entire room was full of Hulkamaniacs and we were yelling and screaming and cheering him on.

It was awesome, and it's still awesome everytime I watch it. Loved that it took more than one Rock Bottom to beat him too.

    ReplyDelete
  19. An odd choice but that last time Flair won the belt from Jarrett on Nitro was a huge mark out moment for me.

  20. I loved the match, never understood the hate.

Marked the fuck out when Nash pinned Goldberg to end the streak.

Jumping in place and yelling at the tv screen marking out.

I really hated Goldberg for some reason then, and liked Nash a lot. still like Nash but also appreciate Goldberg now but on that night...man

Its not a workrate classic or something.

I know the crowd is a big reason it's a classic but I think there's a fine well booked match in there too.

i was there for the Edge cash in, the whole crowd went crazy for it.

We were cheering for Carlito and Chris Masters of all people, thats how much Albany hated Cena.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Agreed. I always thought Cole did a great job calling that match. Also, if you re-watch the whole match, the crowd is dead for the most of it because they probably figured there was no way Mankind was gonna beat Rock for the title with Rock/Austin inevitably happening at Mania, and on free TV no less. Then DX came out and they woke up a bit and then Austin came out and the crowd just went crazy because I think they realized there was a legit chance that a title change was gonna happen... and it wound up being one of the great moments in the history of our sport /Schiavone.

  28. My all time favorite is Steve Austin winning the WWF title at Wrestlemania 14.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yeah I watched that on DVD and even after knowing everything that happened, it was tremendous. I was there live when 'Cide finally won the title and it was just a great culmination of everything.

    ReplyDelete
  30. also, for me, it was a sweet spot in pro-WWF love because WCW was swirling down the drain (that night, of course, reaching their first or at least most symbolic nadir with the Fingerpoke of Doom) while Russo booking hadn't driven me nuts yet

so we never forget: http://www.wwe.com/classics/foley-nash-jan-4-1999-26081539 Nash saying you all just didn't like the Fingerpoke of Doom because it means you all got GOT

  35. Guarantee I'm the only one who's going here but Miz over Orton. I liked Miz's character and that Orton reign felt like it had lasted a million years with him never dropping to Barrett. I watched that Raw on DVR so I had no idea what time it actually was and it completely never occurred to me that Miz had backed out of a match earlier in the night. When his music hit I actually stood up off my computer chair and had a 5 minute long markout/heart attack when it looked like Orton was going to win. Seeing how genuinely happy he was both in character and then on the ramp as he can't hold it in anymore and starts crying with Riley was one of my favorite moments in years and years.

1st HHH title win is up there as is Foley's title win (I'm apparently the one guy who didn't have it spoiled for them) and WMXX and Punk's MITB.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Benoit winning the big one at Mania was a literal jump out of our seat moment for my brother and I. I still remember him and I leaping to our feet and high fiving one another once HHH tapped. Immediately after we both were near tears when we saw Benoit turn around, face Eddie, and embrace him. We said that night that there was no way wrestling could bet get any better for us as two of our long time favorites finally reached the heights they deserved. And, sadly, we were right. The great moments since then, and there have been several, have never been as good, or as meaningful, as that one sequence at the end of Mania XX.

Rock vs HHH at Backlash because just when things looked bleakest for Rock, out comes Austin with a chair, out comes Linda with a re-instated Earl Hebner, and you just KNOW, that the odds are finally evened, and Rock (who was my favourite wrestler from Summerslam 98 - Wrestlemania X7) was finally gonna have his big moment as a face.

  41. Piper smashing the Flower Shop was one of (if not the) first moments that hooked me as a fan. He seemed legitimately enraged and looking for vengeance. Not in the same way, but Orndorff turning on Hogan, Andre challenging Hogan and Macho smashing Steamboat with the ring bell all helped make me a fan, an addiction I still can't fully shake 27 years later.

  66. The issue of course was that net fans have been programmed to be anti-Hogan since 1991 minimum, and big fans of head-drops, submission wrestling and high-spots. This match provided none of that.

Personally I love the match, if only for the crowd. It's always something special to see a crowd go fucking CRAZY like that. I get that Nash is occasionally over-criticized for his part in things, and that Goldberg being hurt wrecked the angle, but HOLY FUCK, who still gets that upset over something from that much later? Is he that bitter about his legacy being ruined? I mean, the guy who deliberately did as little work as possible for his entire career because he felt he didn't need to is actually UPSET that the "smart marks" didn't care for him? Well no kidding, big guy.

  73. There are two that really stick out from my childhood

    1-
Steamboat over Savage at WM3… just the ultimate
triumph of good over evil in one of the best matches of all time. Plus I did
not get to see the Bulldogs win at WM2 or Hennig win the AWA world title live,
so it was one of the few times I got to see a favorite win a title.

    2-
And this is super odd…. But, Sam Houston over Krusher Kruschev for the NWA Mid Atlantic
title on an episode of World Championship Wrestling (Saturday Night)- I had
only been a wrestling fan for four or five months, and had only started
watching the NWA the week before. The ending came when Houston was tossed to
the floor and Nikita Koloff started smacking him around while Ivan was running
down the USA on commentary. All of a sudden, the Road Warriors charged out and started
brawling with the Kolofs at ringside. Animal threw Houston from the floor, over
the ropes and onto Kruschev for the win… it was just so wild and out of
control, 12 year old me was hooked.

From my more adult years- both Kane
and Austin swapping the title at KotR 98 and the following night’s Raw. I loved
Kane’s win because I was there and it was the first time a world title changed
hands in Pittsburgh and I loved Austin getting it back, because I was there as
well (having driven from Pittsburgh to Cleveland on a random Monday for the
show) and it was awesome to see two title changes back when it meant something-
also because Austin was the best.

    - Dusty Rhodes gets the bleep kicked out of him in the parking lot (an all-time best)
    - Goldberg beating Hulk Hogan
    - Barry Windham beating Dusty Rhodes (with the help of a jaw-dropping Ron Garvin heel turn)
    - Virgil in 91 (both beating DiBiase at WM and winning the Million $ title at SS - that was about as "feel good" a run as someone had at that time)

    - Cena's surprise entrance in the Royal Rumble (like him or not, that was pretty impressive)

Everything else I've loved had either someone I didn't want going over, or was a face vs. Face thing where I kinda didn't care who won and just wanted to see the match. (Benoit & Eddie's wins would have been, but I wasn't watching at that time.)

After a year and a half of that annoying midcard talent prancing around with the second biggest belt in the company, cheating his way to victory time and again, to see him finally destroyed in just 30 seconds was utterly beautiful. Say what you will about Warrior, he always has a special place in my heart for ending HTM in grand fashion.

  94. To each his own, but Taker's return made me groan. I remember thinking "they're gonna end this classic with THIS??"

  95. Related to #2, I marked out when Pitbull #1 returned. I knew it was happening, but the moment was still great.

  96. moments that I thought would matter to me, but didnt: Benoit winning the WCW title, Booker winning WCW title in 00, Undertaker's 2000 return, Jericho unifying the titles in 01 (because it was leading to an obvious HHH job), the Alliance in general (outside the initial swerves)
