ETA: I don't know if this has ever been asked but how hands on is McFarlane these days with Family Guy? I would imagine he's working more on American Dad than FG.
Venture Brothers is back now actually, I think we're five or so episodes in. Such a great show and I really enjoy how the characters actually grow and change over time.
I'm very wary of what the FG writers do to the Simpsons characters (though I presume Groening and company had veto power over everything in the script). I'd be much more interested in the Family Guy characters visiting Springfield on a Simpsons episode.
Agreed. I actually quite like that episode, although the stuff directly involving the Critic doesn't do that much for me save one or two lines. It's more the Krusty/Burns/etc. stuff that I love. Still, no problem with the crossover, I think it works fine, and it holds up for someone who has never even heard of The Critic, I would think; the "crossover" isn't really the core part of the episode. If The Critic had never existed, he would have just seemed like a new Simpsons character brought in to judge a film festival.
You'd think he'd be working more on American Dad, cause they've been firing off really good shows lately. All FG has been lately is fighting, gross-outs, or both
I love this. I love this so much it hurts. The only thing I want more is for the episode to cut to Seth MacFarlene and Matt Groening counting there money while watching the episode. I'm sure the episode will deliver a lot of laughs. Does it have integrity from a creative place? of course not, but neither did that episode of The Simpsons and The Critic, or the Jetsons and The Flintstones, or Freddy Vs. Jason - but all of those were a lot of fun.
So, I dunno - I like Family Guy a lot,- but I'm a super nerd who just marvels at the obscure references and off-the-wall gags (also, American Dad, Bob's Burgers is great too) and appreciates the kind of creativity writing "Dumb" humor like that requires. I do know that getting worked up over it is a little silly though.
The Simpsons/Critic crossover is awesome. But it was back when The Simpsons was still funny, and of course The Critic wasn't around long enough to become a wretched parody of itself.
Meh. Neither show has really done anything for me in a long time. The Simpsons in particular should have been cancelled ages ago. Personally, the fact that The Cleveland Show got cancelled was more notewortthy news for me. I'm in the minority I realize, but I quite liked that show.
Does that mean they're not gonna pony up the money for the good characters? Because I can live if it's Disco Stu, Otto, Surly, and Sherri (but not Terri).
Wha? I didn't hear about this. Fox is stupid to let that go. Even if it isn't pulling in huge ratings in its spot, it's a solid performer, and the costs are low because they went on a writing binge at some point and they have seasons worth of episodes already ready to go. I'm glad it'll at least be on somewhere though. Fox also needs to remember that they have never had a ton of success trying to find companion shows for The Simpsons and they should take what they can get.
Seth MacFarlane actually has nothing to do with American Dad's writing or showrunning, he's just the producer and the voices of Stan & Roger. That show's always been primarily in the hands of Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman. Seth pretty much keeps himself busy with all his acting appearances, side projects, directing, and his lounge act.
Groening always ends up coming around on certain episodes I think out of fear that he'll alienate someone from buying DVDs or toys or whatever (because most of his money comes from merchandise licensing due to a deal he cut when the show was first created.) But you can tell when he really doesn't like something. He's really against "Deep Space Homer", for one.
Agreed with the others who stated this would have been great years ago. The Simpsons haven't been relevant in ages, and as much as Family Guy still makes me laugh sometimes I got out of the habit of watching a long time ago.
I love virtually all of the voice actors on the show, but I just can't seem to warm up to it. And I've given it a bunch of chances, too. American Dad is still far and above the best show on Animation Domination, in my view.
I remember Matt Groening taking his name off the credits for the Critic crossover. He may disassociate himself with the show all together with this.
ReplyDeleteThis... cannot end well.
ReplyDelete6 years ago I would have been so totally psyched for this. I haven't watched either show in a long time though. Surprised it has not happened sooner.
ReplyDeleteRegular Show is killing all animated shows right now. YEEEEAAAH IT IS.
ReplyDeleteDidn't South Park already do this with Cartoon Wars?
ReplyDeleteCombined, both shows have had a dozen years' worth of shit.
ReplyDeleteThis is like if TNA and ROH combined NOW.
hey, the Critics crossover wasn't that bad.
ReplyDeleteThe Mr. Burns scene killed it. And Krusty... "oops, I said the quiet part loud and the loud part quiet"
You're right. But listen to the commentary for that track. Groening isn't even on the commentary track because he's so against crossovers.
ReplyDeleteFox is more desperate than TNA!
ReplyDeleteThis would of been great......in 2005.
ReplyDeleteETA: I don't know if this has ever been asked but how hands on is McFarlane these days with Family Guy? I would imagine he's working more on American Dad than FG.
Worst.Episode.Ever.Probably.
ReplyDeleteWas that a sanctioned crossover?
ReplyDeletePS That episode permanently ruined FG for me.
Venture Bros. is coming back. Maybe they can lift up animated shows again. That show does not get enough love imo.
ReplyDeleteTHE Simpson's characters don't fit into the FG comedy formula. Gonna be a bust
ReplyDeleteVenture Brothers is back now actually, I think we're five or so episodes in. Such a great show and I really enjoy how the characters actually grow and change over time.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I've been waiting to watch them. I usually do a mini-marathon with my brother. Such a well written show.
ReplyDeleteThe Critic crossover episode was awesome. I can't imagine why a Simpsons fan wouldn't like it unless they're a REAL purist, a la Groening.
ReplyDeleteIt's the Animation Domination version of the InVasion. It'll turn out just as well as that did.
ReplyDeleteI'm very wary of what the FG writers do to the Simpsons characters (though I presume Groening and company had veto power over everything in the script). I'd be much more interested in the Family Guy characters visiting Springfield on a Simpsons episode.
ReplyDeletewell maybe not with American Dad because in a year, it is moving to TBS
ReplyDeleteNo, South Park was just making fun of both of them
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I actually quite like that episode, although the stuff directly involving the Critic doesn't do that much for me save one or two lines. ReplyDeleteThere is a lil show called "Bob's Burgers" thats all kinds of awesome.
ReplyDeleteAnd of course Archer.
You'd think he'd be working more on American Dad, cause they've been firing off really good shows lately. All FG has been lately is fighting, gross-outs, or both
ReplyDeleteI'm more interested in American Dad's move to TBS.

ReplyDeleteVentures Brothers won't be back until 2015 after this week's season finale.
ReplyDeleteP&H have stated that even with the shortened seasons and move to flash animation, huge hiatuses are still going to plague the show....
Not really; this weekend is the season finale.
ReplyDeleteThen it goes away again for another two years.
Meh. Neither show has really done anything for me in a long time. The Simpsons in particular should have been cancelled ages ago.
ReplyDeletePersonally, the fact that The Cleveland Show got cancelled was more notewortthy news for me. I'm in the minority I realize, but I quite liked that show.
The popularity of the episode (with fans and critics) ultimately forced Groening to backpeddle and say he now likes the episode.
ReplyDeleteIt's Wrestlemania X8 all over again.
ReplyDeleteIt'll suck, but we'll all watch it.
Seth McFarlane is involved, so by definition it will be awful.
ReplyDeleteDoes that mean they're not gonna pony up the money for the good characters? Because I can live if it's Disco Stu, Otto, Surly, and Sherri (but not Terri).

ReplyDeleteI dunno, I hear Disco Stu doesn't come cheap.
ReplyDeleteIgnore this entire. Watch Bob's Burgers instead.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome.
I thought the Simpsons-Critic crossover was hilarious.
ReplyDeleteNor does he advertise.
ReplyDeleteI stopped watching The Cleveland Show in it's second season, I just hated how his "personality" changed from a laidback person to a total dick.
ReplyDeleteGlad it's been cancelled.
"...that was non-alcoholic champagne."
ReplyDeleteIf that were the case it would be the first funny Simpsons episode in a decade
ReplyDeleteComic Book Guy has an attitude, he didn't shake hands with Joe Swanson backstage!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about the move. Hopefully it's not another Futurama.
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of/paid attention to The Critic, but Burns MAKES that episode.
ReplyDelete"Get me his non-union Mexican equivalent!"
Goddamn right. The Edison episode was so much funnier than anything The Simpsons or FG have produced in the last five years it's astonishing.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing I'm probably the only guy who's excited for the Phineas & Ferb/Marvel crossover in August?
ReplyDeleteI love virtually all of the voice actors on the show, but I just can't seem to warm up to it. And I've given it a bunch of chances, too. American Dad is still far and above the best show on Animation Domination, in my view.
