Summer slam 88

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Scott,
Why didn't Beefcake participate in the first Summerslam? Was he hurt and supposed to win title? What was plan with Ultimate Warrior if Beefcake would've participated and/or won the IC title?
Thanks,
Jim

Although Beefcake missing out on Summerslam 90 was a legit accident, the 88 thing was planned months in advance.  They should totes bring back the BIG RED X OF DOOM to cover up blood instead of stopping matches, though.

  1. What was the point, though? Vince didn't want to put the IC title on him or ??? It's not like the Ron Bass feud burned the house down either.

Next to Hogan The Barber was my second favorite wrestler back then. I HATED ron bass for doing what he did.
I wonder though, assuming he beats Perfect for the IC title in 90, what the plans were for him after that.

Was fun watching him shave The Outlaws head though.

  4. That giant red 'X' scared the SHIT out of me when I was younger, to the point that when I would go and watch my copy of WrestleMania III, I had to turn the tape off after I got past the JYD/Harley match for fear of seeing Beefcake. It probably didn't help that I had this vague memory of Brutus cutting an interview after the incident where the camera was only focused from the neck down.

I'm guessing you didn't take to well to Furface then.

  6. Yeah, that never made sense to me when I heard it was planned in advance. Beefcake was ridiculously over when he turned face and having him finally beat HTM would have been a great blow-off to the months of having been "this close" to getting the belt.

I would guess the reasoning was he didn't need it? He was an over midcard face, with no other heels that would benefit from beating him. Putting the belt on Warrior the way they did, though, was a perfect storm that built him up towards getting the WWF title at WM6.

  7. I used to be afraid of the voices in Bases Loaded for NES and the soup mini-game in the Three Stooges NES game.

  8. I'll see your Bases Loaded and etc. and raise you fearing the death noise in Atari 2600 Berzerk. And the 1965 Screen Gems logo.

  9. Yes, that was the first time I ever saw it...I hear they used it before though? The only other time I can think of it being used was the Randy Savage cobra incident.

  10. Don't forget the "CENSORED" banner on the weekend morning recap shows when the cobra bit Savage. Why didn't Right To Censor use it, or did they?

  11. "Run, Coward, Run." From Sinistar arcade was also terrifying.

Searching through the cabins in Friday the 13th for the NES, especially when you would get to the one that had Jason in it and the music would get creepy and then youd enter a room and BAM there he was. Terrifying.

  13. That's nothing, look up the opening of Victory Road, the arcade version.

  14. That was the the flying stone head? That was horrifying too, but if I recall you didn't actually fight him.

Sinistar was huge, fast and chased you down.

They should have had Beefcake challenge Warrior for the IC title at WrestleMania V. They could have billed the match as The Ultimate Haircut.

  17. That switch very much seems like something they'd do now for punishment. Like Beefcake beat up a stripper or didn't swallow for Hogan or shook someone's hand wrong.

But I don't know if that form of punishment was around in 88. Maybe that was the case and it never leaked out. Cause it very much seemed like Beefcake was supposed to win the title but something happened and they just said, "Fuck it. Throw Warrior in. He's over. And it worked far better than they expected.

I give Vince no credit. Everything that works is a happy accident.

Also I think it really hurt Beekcake's heat cause it made him look like a loser who failed. Whereas Warrior did what Beefcake nor anyone else could do. In a minute or whatever it was.

I thought someone was going to die at the end of that feud. And I knew that wrestling was fake!!!

  19. I suppose Beefcake could have won the title in spite of Bass's attack, then defended against Bass successfully through the blow-off. He drops it to Rude at Wrestlemania V and Warrior picks it up at Summerslam 89 leaving us with a relatively similar timeline moving forward.

Warrior would have had to settle for a random squash at Summerslam, but he could have made it up by definitively going over Ted DiBiase at Wrestlemania V, which would have probably gotten him just as over as beating Honkytonk Man.

  23. SOUP GAME. those voices terrified me as a kid. i feel like we might be long-lost siblings.

add the mountie's cattle prod to the list as well. that turned me off from wrestling for about 2 years. it's crazy how that stuff has such an emotional effect when you're a youngster

  24. God what a stupid name. At least make it The Good Father and give him a priest gimmick or something.
