The SmarK RAW Rant – 07.08.13

Live from Baltimore, MD

Your hosts are Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler & JBL

Vickie Guerrero & Brad Maddox join us to start, as she climbs a ladder to make some sort of point about Money In The Bank. She basically pleads for her job (which might be decided by a WWE App vote, of course) and announces the usual matches were MITB guys pair off against each other. I really hate those matches because then you get half the guys coming in on a loss.

Daniel Bryan v. Sheamus

Criss-cross and Bryan gets a clothesline for two, and he goes to work on the leg with kicks. Sheamus comes back with an armbar, but Bryan puts him down with a knee and throws more kicks. Sheamus with a neckbreaker for two. Backbreaker gets two, but Bryan puts him on the floor and follows with a dive, which Sheamus turns into a stungun on the railing as we take a break. Back with Sheamus hitting another backbreaker for two, but Bryan makes the comeback as they brawl outside off a missed Brogue Kick, and Bryan follows with a flying bodypress for two. Bryan with the kicks to get the crowd into it, but Sheamus ducks onto the apron and hits the forearms. To the top, but Bryan brings him down and tries a rana, which Sheamus blocks. The flying shoulderblock gets two. Bryan blocks White Noise and throws more kicks to put Sheamus down for two. Missile dropkick misses and Sheamus gets two. They slug it out and Sheamus tries White Noise, which Bryan reverses for two and then into the Yes-Lock. Sheamus reverses that into the cloverleaf, but Bryan reverses THAT into the SMALL PACKAGE OF DOOM, which finishes at 14:52. Hell of an opener. ***3/4

The Shield v. Brodus Clay & Tensai

The funkers overpower Rollins to start, but Clay misses a splash by about 10 feet and Reigns takes over on him. This gives us a RIDICULOUSLY long and boring heat segment on Clay as Reigns chinlocks him to death, but Tensai gets the alleged hot tag. He beats people up and Baldobombs Rollins for two. Reigs comes in with a spear to finish at 6:34. *

John Cena is out for a talk with Mark Henry. He gives his usual “This title means everything and you’ll never have respect unless you earn it” deal, and then DEMANDS Henry cross his invisible line and come to get some. So Henry DOES. Well, he did ask for it. Henry holds the belt high, people boo, and this was a fine pro wrestling segment.

Chris Jericho v. Curtis Axel

Jericho dominates with dropkicks to start and clotheslines Axel to the floor for some punishment. Back in, Axel catches him with a cheapshot and gets a neckbreaker for two. We take a break and return with Axel holding an armbar, but Jericho comes back with a short clothesline and tries the Walls. Axel counters out, so Jericho gets a northern lights suplex for two. Axel clubs him down for two and throws chops in the corner, but misses a blind charge, allowing Jericho to get the flying bodypress for two. Lionsault misses and Axel with a neckbreaker for two. Another Lionsault hits and gets two. Codebreaker is blocked and reversed into the Perfectplex for two. Well, if you don’t yell the line first, it doesn’t work properly. Axel gives him some trashtalk, so Jericho takes him down for the Walls and he makes the ropes. Axel bails and gets sent into the tables, where Miz gets all up in his face. Axel is so distracted that Jericho hit the codebreaker and pins him at 11:51. Well, clearly he’s the Intercontinental champion if he’s doing jobs on TV now. Good match that was a bit too long, which is weird because it’s building to two matches that will likely be much worse. ***

Meanwhile, The Rhodes Scholars get into a discussion with Uncle Zeb’s guys, which leads to Wade Barrett punching out Fandango for some reason.

Sin Cara v. Alberto Del Rio

Sin Cara with a pair of armdrags, but Del Rio pounds him into the corner. Cara comes back with a flying headscissors, but Del Rio puts him down with an enzuigiri for two. Cara slugs back, but another enzuigiri puts him down again and Del Rio goes to the armbar. This is going nowhere, so Dolph Ziggler interrupts for some wacky comedy until Del Rio charges out for the brawl. And the match just kind of ends around 5:00. This feud is totally flattening out Ziggler after he was super-hot leading to his cash-in.

Vickie Guerrero’s Job Evaluation: It’s all three McMahons doing the questioning, as Stephanie bitches her out for signing Brock Lesnar, Vince thinks she’s entertaining, and HHH thinks she’s entertaining but she’s terrible at her job. So Vince and HHH snark at each other and Stephanie gets the deciding vote. So she defers to the app, which leaves Vickie fired by a landslide. So Vince, in order to punish us all, appoints Brad Maddox as the new GM. Could we just not have a GM anymore? Please? This was a trainwreck.

Kane v. Michael McGillicutty Christian

Whoops, bet someone manning the video wall got yelled at for that one. Kane slugs Christian down, but gets caught with a necksnap and Christian follows with an elbow for two. He chokes Kane out and follows with a dive to the floor as we take a break. And then we return and Kane just chokeslams and pins him at 8:00. OK then. *

The Wyatt Family is finally here! And Kane gets beat up by freaky rednecks as a result as the crowd chants “Husky Harris”. So that probably didn’t go the way they wanted it to after weeks of build and an entire show full of promo videos.

Meanwhile, Ryback gives Vickie a big hug on her way out. I have no idea who this buries more, but I sure wouldn’t want to be Ryback these days.

AJ & Alicia Fox v. Layla & Kaitlyn

Well this should crank up the excitement. This quickly turns into a brawl between AJ and Kaitlyn and the match just stops at 2:00 while the Bellas make catty comments on commentary. Yeah.

CM Punk v. Randy Orton

Stalemate to start, but Orton puts Punk down and drops knees. Punk gets a suplex for two as the crowd is split here and we take a break as they fight on the floor. Back with the guys trading near-falls until Punk gets the running knee in the corner and flying elbow. Orton escapes the GTS and turns it into the draping DDT, as the crowd swings between both guys. Punk counters the RKO into a backslide, but Orton turns that into the powerslam for two. He pounds away in the corner and they fight for the finishers until Punk gets the GTS for the pin at 14:34. **1/2 And then Daniel Bryan runs in and beats up both guys to pose with the briefcase. You’d think this would be awesome sauce, but the crowd doesn’t really care, and it’s hard to blame them considering Bryan beat up two guys way above his paygrade on the babyface scale after weeks of getting treated like an afterthought.

The Pulse

I was right into the first hour, which flew by on the strength of a great opener, and then the show ground to its usual full stop by the time the third hour started 14 hours later. And yay, another heel GM character. Another bore this week.

Comments

  1. Bryan made Orton tap clean two weeks ago in the main event and this week beat Sheamus clean. I could have done without the special guest refereeing from last week, but that's hardly getting treated like an afterthought.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Ok...so we have 2 title matches on Sunday in the form of the US and Tag Titles; Ambrose was on camera for 10 seconds, which was 10 more than the Usos. Way to build up those matches.

    ReplyDelete
  3. What is WITH the crowds nowadays? They're not concerned with the show, and the ones who interact with it just want to get themselves over instead. I hate to say it, but a Southern-style crowd makes for better TV. And to all those who chanted "Husky Harris": THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS!

    ReplyDelete
  4. I thought the Wyatt debut was great, except for the shitty crowd that wanted to show how "smart and cool" they were. "Oh my god, we remember another character he played two years ago! We're so awesome!" Fuck crowds like that. It's one thing to do it with a boring or floundering character (like Tensai) but the crowd was even into Wyatt, popping when he came out, so what the fuck? Idiots. Probably the same people who interrupt great promos with what chants.

    ReplyDelete
  5. "What did you think of tonight's show, Brain?"
"It was incredible, Monsoon. Those drum solos were something else, I tell ya."
"'Drum solos?!' What show were YOU watching?"
"I was at the Rush concert! I wouldn't lower myself to watching RAW with all these humanoids."
    "Will you be serious?!"

    ReplyDelete
  6. "This feud is totally flattening out Ziggler after he was super-hot leading to his cash-in."

Duh, because they took away Dolph's bells and whistles. Namely his hot girlfriend and his body guard. Now he's just another smiling doofus in a world full of them. Turning him face was the wrong decision.

    ReplyDelete
  7. These people completely missed the point of the post WM crowd. That crowd got itself "over" by actually being clever and only shitting on the bad stuff. This crowd wasn't clever, everyone fucking knows he was Husky Harris. And the worst part is, not only were the promos and build awesome, this crowd even recognized it, there were big pops for the promo video and the entrance. Can't blame a boring character like Tensai.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Yeah, I don't think the crowd was using second level thinking, it was just moronic booking. Vocal portions of the crowd were going nuts for Orton and Punk. Someone beats both of them up. This is going to pop the crowd how? And thus the problem of booking all face or all heel matches.

That and I'm pretty sure everyone expected a run-in fest. If you're not running in there, (well, Kane has an excuse, at least), what the hell is the point of even showing up for the match?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Who are you to decide for everyone that the Wyatt debut was "great"?

The live crowd shit on it. Deal with it.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I don't think turning him was the problem, it's what they're doing with it. Just have him do what he always did, but dump AJ, fight bad guys. Instead they're Mizzing him, but there's still time to fix it hopefully. The first week or two were fine...Ziggler attacking Del Rio right before Brock showed, that was fine, showed a passion. Ziggler telling goofy jokes, meh.

    ReplyDelete
  11. No, they just thought the segment was stupid.

Good on them for making their voice heard.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Except no they didn't. They cheered NOTICEABLY for the video, for the music hitting, for the entrance... it's clear they liked it.

    ReplyDelete
  13. It's 2013. Maybe Hillbillies aren't as over as a few smarks would like to believe.

    ReplyDelete
  14. " I THOUGHT the Wyatt debut was great" was my exact quote, you trolling piece of shit. Don't tell ME what I am required to think. And the crowd popped for it, except for the chant it was fine. If you thought differently, that's cool; I'm not a trolling piece of garbage who acts like a fucking asshole on the Internet to prove how cool he is, so as far as I'm concerned you're entitled to your opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  15. But it was hysterical when they chanted Albert at Tensai.

    ReplyDelete
  16. It's 2013, maybe John Cena isn't as over as a few marks would like to believe. He got the loudest derisive chant of the night.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I actually perceived the live crowd shitting on it too. Which is unfortunate, hopefully future crowds will embrace it a bit more. But after this he's got an uphill road.

    ReplyDelete
  18. If you THOUGHT the Wyatt debut wad so great, then why are you getting on the crowds case for expressing THEIR opinion?

Don't cover your ass with semantics.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Then why did they chant "Husky Harris"?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I thought it was a bunch of people who had no idea what to do with that and then a small group that got their chant in. Big difference from the heel cheapshotting your top babyface and the crowd loudly chanting "ONE MORE TIME!".

It's a weird gimmick, I'm not sure it's going to work. One of those things where, "okay, well, why are they in wrestling?"

    ReplyDelete
  21. And then they appeared in person without post-production, and the crowd thought "oh, that's it?"

Like getting a good look at the woman in your bed for the first time after a night of drinking.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Worst_in_the_WorldJuly 8, 2013 at 11:22 PM

Oh hey, if someone reading this happens to have been in the crowd tonight chanting "Husky Harris", I would just like to tell you that you should proceed to eat a dick and stop watching wrestling, you fucking moron.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well, they do it to themselves too, if you're going to give someone a stupid gimmick you have no intention of following up on... probably don't want to make it easily chantable. You just TRY to chant "Michael McGuillicudy."

    ReplyDelete
  24. You'll notice they didn't do it until they thought the segment was over. It's not like they were chanting during his entrance. During the segment itself, in fact, there were Daniel Bryan chants. The crowd wants to see this team get a push. Besides, as others have pointed out, it wasn't the whole arena or even most of it; it was a loud minority. Translation: it was the portion of the crowd visible at most events that wants to get itself over.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Fair enough, I thought they popped big initially and didn't notice any drop off, but that's my perception of what happened. I certainly wouldn't jump on you for seeing it differently, like some trolls here.

    ReplyDelete
  26. There is no US Title match. Ambrose is in the Jobbers MitB match

    ReplyDelete
  27. Worst_in_the_WorldJuly 8, 2013 at 11:27 PM

If the Husky chants keep up and ruin the gimmick, well hopefully this teaches WWE a lesson about debuting guys in destined to fail gimmicks like Husky was. They seem to think that they could bury anyone for as long as they want, and then just re-debut them whenever they want. Obviously it's not that simple. There's legitimate forever damage that they do to someone's career when they bury them on primetime TV. So, yeah, maybe they should save that "we'll teach you to respect the business by making you look like an asshole" stuff for NXT, instead of in front of their entire fucking audience.

    ReplyDelete
  28. And they also provided an explanation as to why he is now falled Curtis Axel.

With Bray Wyatt, they are actively insulting the fans by giving no reason why he is suddenly no longer Husky Harris.

    ReplyDelete
  29. If Husky Harris II DIDN'T bomb live, then this would the first case ever of a crowd smarking on something that they liked. I find that highly unlikely.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Wait, whoa, idea. Bray Wyatt needs to say in his next promo that he's a leader now BECAUSE he saw the light after being a follower back in the day! He let Dashing Cody Rhodes choose to call him Husky Harris; he let Wade Barrett dictate his WWE debut; he let CM Punk take over the group and whip him like a dog... now he knows there's leaders and followers, and he's a leader. Zana, I think you just stumbled into a money promo!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Worst_in_the_WorldJuly 8, 2013 at 11:32 PM

They should probably have him brush it off with some riddle-speak— "We all were different people until the creator made us the monsters we are", some shit like that.

But yeah, as I say below, they need to stop burying guys on national fucking TV in awful gimmicks and then expect to just turn the switch and pretend people forget. It's so fucking dumb.

By the way, why exactly are you so personally antagonistic about the Wyatt gimmick? To me the three guys are playing it to the hilt, the videos have been sufficiently creepy and different from anything else on the show... I mean, why would a wrestling fan be against something like this from the start?

And "Husky Harris" chant aside, the crowd did POP when they came out. There's definitely a chance for this to get over huge.

    ReplyDelete
  32. You're acting like 20,000 people were chanting "Husky Harris". Not even close to being the truth.

    ReplyDelete
  33. How is chanting "Husky Harris" expressing an opinion? They're just stating facts that anyone paying attention already knew, just to get themselves over.

It was dumb when they chanted Albert, and it's dumb now. I'm not watching Raw to know how smart the crowd is. If you think it's bad chant "THIS IS STUPID" or something.

When the crowd starts depreciating my enjoyment of the show I'm gonna call them out on it just like I would a sucky performer. They chant because they want attention, they got it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I guess the way to find out for sure is to see if the chants sticks on the next RAW.

Or if #HuskyHarris trends on Twitter.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Probably closer to 100. Not like what the crowd does makes any sense anyway. They "WHAT" Mark Henry's serious promo, some of them boo Cena's goofy promo, and then they chant "one more time" when Henry takes out Cena.

And then there's that crowd in SC that gave Sheamus a Jesus Christ pop.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Did you not hear the loud pop when they came out with the lantern? Or the cheering as they got into the ring before the Husky Harris chant? People don't usually cheer something they find stupid. This crowd wanted to be "cool" so they started the Husky Harris chant.

    ReplyDelete
  37. There probably were, including the people chanting along at home.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Wait, did you even see the segment?

    ReplyDelete
  39. CM Punk turned Festus into Luke Gallows in 10 seconds. He never got a Festus chant after that.

A simple explanation goes a long ways towards not making fans feel like chumps for paying attention.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Well, Punk also worked Smackdown too. So, it didn't matter what anyone chanted because post production decides what the crowd reaction is.

    ReplyDelete
  41. How am I going to see who is chanting along at home?

If so few people were chanting as you claim, then nobody ruined anything.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I asked if you actually watched the Wyatt debut.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Not live, about an hour later.

So what difference does that make?

    ReplyDelete
  44. It's shit like the Wyatt family segment that really annoys me. Too often crowds try to be too clever for their own good at the expense of the stuff happening in the ring. Voicing you're opinion is fine but this is just another case of trying to be clever.

I would get if the fans were dead silent when they came out and then chanted "Husky Harris" because hey, maybe they don't give a shit about him and that's okay.

But when the Wyatt family came out the crowd popped pretty good and THEN started chanting "Husky Harris" so I don't know what the hell their intent was or how they felt about it.

It's just like when the crowd chants "Albert" or "Sexual Chocolate" or "What?"

the law of go-home-show booking would indicate that:

    -cena retains (henry stands tall)

    -axel retains (lost his match)

    - aj retains (got carried out by big e)

    - unclear who will win the mitb all stars, but dbry is certainly not winning (wins a strong match and looks strong as the camera fades)

ziggler/del rio is a wash right now, not info for jericho/ryback, have to wait till sd for the other mitb (though if all we had was raw, fandango getting knocked out would bode well for his chances)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Jesus, did Bray Wyatt shit in your cheerios this morning.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Your_Favourite_AssholeJuly 9, 2013 at 12:10 AM

    worse...

    'he's cumming'

    ReplyDelete
  48. Smackdown is technically the go-home show.

    ReplyDelete
  49. They should have had the Wyatt family beat the shit out of Orton; might as well make Orton get on his knees and job like a bitch to put the Wyatt family over, especially since there is the angle of having the Viper get steamrolled by the new Apex Predators.

As for Vicky, stick her with Cena and have Cena deal with her nagging and bullshit for a while. You could get some mileage out of Cena being forced to defend Vicky and the whole odd couple vibe of Vicky nagging Cena and making his life hell and Cena as a henpecked loser; would go a long way to make people feel sorry for Cena and have sympathy for him.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Your_Favourite_AssholeJuly 9, 2013 at 12:19 AM

silly rabbit, sd doesnt really count

    ReplyDelete
  51. The audience give me a chuckle. I also love how Wyatt didn't sell it all.

    ReplyDelete
  52. That's mostly my problem with face turns in WWE, in that they're never really turns. We might always say that the key to a great face turn is to have the person continue doing as a face what they did as a heel, except now they're fighting bad guys instead of good guys, but that's not entirely true. There needs to be a fundamental moment of change where a person shows they're actually fighting for something, whether it's personal glory, a friend, justice, or the principle of what's right.

Or maybe it's like the initial, awesome face turn by Sheamus, which amounted to nothing more than him interrupting Mark Henry bullying everyone else, answering his challenge and simply saying, "I'll fight ya, fella." Boom, insta-face.

It would be great if Dolph dumped AJ and the resulting feud had her employing guys to take Dolph out. But look at Orton with Evolution, for example. If he hadn't been kicked out, he never would have left. Yet now we're supposed to cheer him?

I can almost guarantee that AJ is going to be the one dumping Dolph, because Vince doesn't see that a face turn involves proactive action, and not simply responding to something a heel does to you. He got it halfway right with ADR, as he was sticking up for Ricardo and whatnot. But it was done with no build, and against a curtain-jerking comedy act. Maybe Dolph's in-ring work will save his face turn the way it continues to keep Daniel Bryan over despite how they write him. But guys should be getting over at least partially because of WWE's writing, not overwhelmingly in spite of it.

    ReplyDelete
  53. these aren't the crowds WWE wants but they're the crowds they deserve

    ReplyDelete
  54. But Albert was shit, always nothing but a terrible worker. Nothing entertaining about him ever, he's basically worthless. And the Tensai character was boring and borderline racist.

Bray Wyatt is a fucking god in comparison.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Could it be that the audience just wanted to have a little fun? It's not like it's going to matter anyway. If they show it later all crowd noise will be edited out. I just saw an audience who liked what they saw. Then started a chant in the last minute or so. No biggie.

    ReplyDelete
  56. There are way too many comments here about the "Husky Harris" chant and not nearly enough about the Vickie-McMahons segment which was easily the worst of the show and quite possibly THE WORST SEGMENT IN THE HISTORY OF RAW!

    ReplyDelete
  57. *OF OUR SPORT.

    Fixed.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Katie Vick was worse.

    ReplyDelete
  59. >Bryan beat up two guys way above his paygrade on the babyface scale after weeks of getting treated like an afterthought.

What? He just main evented RAW, getting a clean win over Orton. He's been all over Smackdown. His weak angle was one of the biggest angles running.

    I'm not following.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I think the Husky Harris chants are being blown out of proportion. You could hear the chant at the end of the segment, but it's not like it was the entire crowd chanting it. I think that the Wyatt family entrance with the lantern was bad fucking ass and the vignettes throughout the night were genuinely creepy. Some of the best stuff they've done in a long time. They'll get past the Husky Harris stuff once Wyatt establishes himself.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Worst ever? Fake Donald Trump vs. Fake Rosie O'donnell has a bone to pick with that statement.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'm surprised so many people even remember him as Husky Harris. He looks alot different, and he wasn't on TV (meaning RAW or Smackdown) all much as Husky. Atleast not that I can remember more than a month or two. Certainly nothing like Albert or Mark Henry's long run as Sexual Chocolate.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I thought it was stupid when they chanted Albert at Tensai. And when they chanted "Sexual Chocolate" incessantly at Mark Henry during his "Hall of Pain" run.

    ReplyDelete
  64. You have an odd fixation on aggressive sexual humiliation of characters you don't like. Want to discuss this?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Worst ever? Not even close. Vickie's acting was fucking spectacular.

    ReplyDelete
  66. To be honest, I had completely forgotten the Husky Harris character until I heard the chant. Then again, I was barely paying attention when most of that stuff was happening, so it's no big surprise.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Dr. Heiny. Anything involving Rob Bartlett. Guest Hosts. Embalming people alive.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Yeah, that was during a time where I wasn't paying much attention to WWE as well. From the Benoit murders to CM Punk's "pipebomb" promo (which really got me back into WWE again).

    ReplyDelete
  69. You could see it when he was talking to Kane. Once he takes the straw hat off, you won't be able to unsee it.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I disagree because 10 years from now, when you say the name Katie Vick, it will still stand out. It was campy crap but it still sticks out as memorable.

This crap tonight is sleep inducing, time wasting crap. No one will remember or care about this by next week(which is why we will get 3 million recaps of it).

    ReplyDelete
  71. Vickie has really grown into her role, I think she is one of the better smarter talents on the payroll. She obviously gets it.

    ReplyDelete
  72. 9/11 is memorable too.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Jesse Baker booking cuckold on the side....

    ReplyDelete
  74. I think the problem is he was called HUSKY HARRIS, which is ten kinds of retarded. People remember that stupid name, and it'll probably end up sticking to him.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Really going to compare a national tragedy to a wrestling angle..

    ReplyDelete
  76. Maybe WWE can possibly learn from this. Give dudes some kind of normal name from get and they wont be bombarded with the awful shit they used to be called....

    ReplyDelete
  77. I can definitely go with this. Crowd is trying to be too clever.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Gotta disagree. I actually thought it was decent. Plus, it has the bonus of getting rid of Vickie as GM. I respect all she has done as a performer over the years and she was genuinely beneficial for the careers of Edge and Dolph Ziggler but for the past 2 years she has offered NOTHING outside of "Excuse me". Hell that is what her twitter handle is. She's been a great sport but her character has nothing left to offer right now as GM.

    ReplyDelete
  79. It's not like I'm comparing their *magnitude* or something... just saying that something being memorably bad is not... a redeeming quality.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Redeeming no, but it still gets a response years later. Whether its good or bad, it stays with ya.

Do you really believe anybody will recall this segment 5 weeks from now, let alone 5 years from now?

    ReplyDelete
  81. Anything involving Johnny Ace not to mention the John Cena vs. Michael Cole main event last year was a hell of a lot worse than tonight's segment.
But the GM gimmick has to go. Unless they're going to sign Eric Bischoff back, there is literally no reason for that gimmick to exist.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Exactly. They're going to forget it because it was bad.

People remember Katie Vick because it was *worse*.

    ReplyDelete
  83. You know those nights when smart crowds can be fun, like that night when they started singing Fandango's theme song?

Yeah, this is an example of what happens when a crowd is too smart for its own good. And it's a shame, because everything about the Wyatt Family debut was awesome! That entrance is AMAZING!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Yeah, I guess it would have sucked if people had chanted "Issac Yankem" at Kane when he debuted.

    ReplyDelete
  85. ISAAC YANKEM!
    DDS!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Well, Baltimore is ROH country now so a few hundred people in that city heckling for the sake of heckling should come as no surprise.
That crowd reminded me of those horrible fans that used to ruin many episodes of Impact Wrestling when TNA ran at the Impact Zone; in particular, the Jeff Hardy fans that sat at the same seats, wore the same Jeff Hardy merchandise at every show and would boo, heckle and lead the rest of the crowd in stupid chants during every single segment that didn't involve Jeff Hardy. I do not miss those fans one bit and I hope TNA never goes back to that cesspool.

    ReplyDelete
  87. WWE takes a very hot start to an angle (or angles) during the summer and royally fucks it up?

I, for one, am shocked - SHOCKED.

    ReplyDelete
  88. What about Sin Cara, Ryback, Seth Rollins, Daniel Bryan etc...

It was more insulting having Hulk Hogan wear a mask as Mr. America and pantomime a storyline for months.

    ReplyDelete
  89. None of those names suck, and none of those people were ever in WWE for more than a cup of coffee on Velocity before getting those names.

And Mr. America was completely different, in that the fans were in on the joke.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Ryback is a terrible name. Just terrible.

    ReplyDelete

It reminded me of Shawn Stasiak returning to the WWE as part of the Alliance, only for the crowd to chant 'MEAT' at him!

  94. So... Does it work in reverse? If I upvote you does that mean you suck cock? Or if I upvote you, you're going to suck my cock in return? If so, sign my ass (cock) up!

    ReplyDelete
  95. Maybe Zanadude had a bad expieience with some hillbillies that involved a banjo and squealing like a pig?

    ReplyDelete
  96. Either way I'm sucking cock, so it might as well be yours.

Now, denizens of Doom, upvote me if you'd like to be passionately kissed on the pubis by Alicia Witt.

  98. Zanadude, did you have a bad expieience with hillbillies on a rafting trip? Did it involve a banjo and pig noises? It's ok man, we're here for you. Just show us on the Ultimate Warrior doll where the hillbillies touched you.

  99. Didn't get a chance to see Raw, just reading the reports. This crowd yelled "Husky Harris" at Wyatt? This is the reason I hate smart wrestling crowds, they ruin the show for the average fan.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I cant beat up on "Smart crowds" when they are basically giving us the RAW of our lives the day after mania. Having said that, I am going to create 10 more new accounts to continuously upvote the Statler/Waldorf comment.

  104. I hope they remember, though, that people chanted "Cactus Jack" at Mankind at first, too. So that kind of thing will fade.

    ReplyDelete
  105. How would you have felt if the crowd chanted Waylon Mercy instead?

    ReplyDelete
  106. Guys... Sheamus and Orton both lost clean! On the same show!

  107. Was thinking the same thing.

  108. YankeesHoganTripleHFanJuly 9, 2013 at 6:19 AM

Hate on the segment if you must, and it went on to long but I laughed during Vicky's temper tantrum. Besides it had some crowd heat.

The Wyatt entrance gave me the creeps. I mean that in the best possible way.
The internet darlings Punk and Bryan won clean and Bryan is being pushed at a legitimate threat. Really I don't see how the smarks could be bitching to much about this show.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Some good matches this week, and a decent enough go-home show if you can ignore the Mcmahon/Guerrero nonsense (which I did).

Can't agree with you, Scott, that D-Bry's been an afterthought. Aside from the odd shifting characterisation, he's had a sustained push for the past few months; winning big matches against Orton and Sheamus, defeating The Shield, closing shows, etc. If anything, it's almost disconcerting to see him pushed quite so strongly. Makes me think the result of Sunday's match is too obvious.

    ReplyDelete
  110. People chant along at home? Seriously?

    ReplyDelete
  111. "Husky Harris" chants, eh? I'd love to hear an "IRWIN!" chant during that debut, but I figure that'd go over everyone's heads.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Not to be too literal, but I'm sure Punk and Orton really ARE above DB on the payscale. In addition, Bryan is hot right now, but not exactly at Mt. Perpetual Over just yet. He could be but he's not quite there yet.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Yeah, the people in Zanadude's grade level.

    Kids, that is.

    ReplyDelete
  114. It wasn't so bad. The biggest problem is that the twenty minute long Vicky segment killed that crowd DEAD. Nobody cared about anything after that. Kane vs. Christian was silent. So rather than lead into your hot new segment you have a weirdly uncomfortable and confusing job evaluation. With a bunch of crap about the app added on. And a Ryback hug.

    ReplyDelete
  115. LEMME TELLYA SOMETHIN

    ReplyDelete
  116. A real smart crowd would have respected the gimmick and not buried it. What you had was a mark crowd trying to be smart by showing they knew Wyatt's old name.

    ReplyDelete
  117. At least it appeared to glow yellow -- entirely appropriate, don't you think?

    ReplyDelete
  118. Ding ding ding!

    ReplyDelete
  119. Talk about changing times...can you imagine how much LESS awesome Steve Austin's "Monday Nyquil" promo would have come off if instead of "I fired him over the phone no less," we got "I fired him with an online poll via the WWE app"?

    ReplyDelete
  120. So of my random thoughts..
-Bryan/Sheamus was fantastic, I'm glad they opened a wrestling show with a wrestling match for once. Impact should take notes.
-According to WWE booking, I'd pick Christian to win the All-Star MITB, since he has the least amount of momentum, and Fandango to win the Jobber MITB since he was punched out in a backstage segment. Was that a babyface turn?
-Brad Maddox IS Eric Bischoff, don't you see? A young nodoby (former announcer) who gets promoted to a position of power out of spite.
-Vickie managing Ryback? Stroke of genius. Maybe they can both chant 'Feed Me More'.
-I'm thinking HHH eventually turns on somebody on the main roster to join with Vince.

-How weird was it, at the beginning of the segment in which the former Husky Harris debuts, a botched graphic of his former tag partner is shown? No wonder they started chanting his old monicker. That entrance is like, the new Undertaker entrance; slow, dark, brooding. I fucking love it. And it's the opposite of every other entrance that has lights and big graphics and pyro. The lantern makes his followers tune out the crowd (that they can't see) and literally folow Wyatt. FUCK I LOVE THIS GUY

-CM Punk back in the main event where he belongs. I guess Bryan finally proved he's not the weak link.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I'm disappointed that the Wyatts didn't come in as faces to challenge the Shield. There are WAY too many heels on the show, and none of the faces get along anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  125. On a positive note, it's been a long time since anybody has complained about Michael Cole.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Anyone else catch the Daniel Bryan chant as the Wyatt family beatdown started??

Bryan is the only reason to watch Raw. Think the Wyatts may be DOA. Already just another group of bad guys.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Shhh. Just below "Don't badmouth TNA!" on the list of BoD rules is "Don't badmouth the Wyatt Family!"

    ReplyDelete
  128. I agree with this. If they allowed Wyatt to cut a brief "We're here and taking over" type promo after dispatching Kane, rather than doing crazy faces, this would've ended better.

    ReplyDelete
  129. The Wyatt family went over like a turd in the proverbial punch bowl. They will be repackaged as generic hillbillies. Also why is everyone shitting on Daniel Bryan. Would people prefer Orton get the push or something?

    ReplyDelete
  130. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00LI6-bxu4g\

Fascinating crowd cam video of the Wyatt segment

    HUGE pop for the entrance
They react totally appropriately during the beating itself
Huge HUSKY HARRIS chants as Bray gets up and goes over to Kane
Huge THAT WAS AWESOME chants as they walk out

I don't really know how to reconcile all that

    ReplyDelete
  135. They cannot or will not book faces to get over

    ReplyDelete
  136. Surprisingly, *I* had fallen asleep earlier in the night and I actually woke *up* to this segment. Which was worse, in a way? If I can paraphrase Poltergiest, it felt like I was lingering in a perpetual dreamstate, a nightmare from which I could not awake.

    ReplyDelete
  137. I'm not certain that debuting the Wyatt family in front of the smark Baltimore crowd was such a good idea.

    ReplyDelete
  138. YankeesHoganTripleHFanJuly 9, 2013 at 7:25 AM

Most of the crowd loved it. A few, not as many as you think, chanted Husky Harris to be wiseasses.

    ReplyDelete
  139. I suppose thus is the mystery of smarks. Open to the world's interpretation.

    ReplyDelete
  140. So this is what happens when you treat your audience like idiots and ignore what they want for years and years. When you finally start writing (at least SOME) stuff in a competent manner the audience doesn't follow along at all and we go screaming back down the fucking well. I don't think things like the Wyatt's and The Shield and Bryan are DOA just yet, but I can already smell the seeds of the annual WWE Summer Failure starting to bloom. The biggest shame has to be the run of crowds since officially putting the rocket onto Bryan...they pulled the trigger at the offical worst time to do it apparently, b/c for the last 3 shows the crowds have not given a shit about him.

As for the Wyatt's, I won't panic just yet...lord knows Vince loves creepy rednecks, and moreover he can be swayed by a gimmick he finds interesting, and I have a feeling that Vince is pretty invested in the Wyatt clan gimmick.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Plus he got the first win over the shield and has ended a few raws and smackdown standing tall in the ring.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Strong bait.

    ReplyDelete
  143. It's funny to read the comments blasting last night's crowd. Remember, these are WWE fans, the same morons who still think that chanting "WHAT?" is amusing.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Agree. They have no concept.

    ReplyDelete
  145. this. that is a similar discussion like people complaining about heels because they dislike them.

    ReplyDelete
  146. The reaction to this post shows me that WWE needs to take back all the money it is giving to Brock Lesnar and The Rock and give it to The Muppets instead.

    ReplyDelete
  147. I thought the post-WrestleMania crowd this year wasn't nearly as much fun as last years.

I mean, stuff like the "we are awesome!" chant seems just obnoxious to me.

    ReplyDelete
  148. That's what a bit worrying. Clean win over Sheamus and then he cleans house and stands tall (lol) at the end of the show... fantastic to see but after kicking so much ass on the go home show are they also going to book him to win the briefcase? Hope so, but I'm actually less sure now than a week ago

    ReplyDelete
  149. Let me just say that the Bryan v. Sheamus match was probably Sheamus' best match in six months. Awesome.

Also, the Vicki thing wasn't completely terrible, but I was really hoping the Wyatts would come out at that time and kidnap her to make her part of the family. Now instead it looks like she's going back to managing, probably Ryback. Lucky him.

And the crow chanting "Husky Harris" pretty much ruined that, which is too bad because the pop on the line, "We're here", was incredible.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Sounds like three solid-to-good pro wrestling matches, all at or over 12 minutes in length, which will eternally be the reason I like to watch pro wrestling. I'll be checking this one out.

    ReplyDelete
  151. I also don't get the point of these McMahon segments. They just come across as mean-spirited, pointless drivel designed to stroke their own egos rather than actually push the product forward. I find it hard to believe that the network and/or the fans are more entertained when these people are a part of the show.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Where did the rocking chair come from? Did they bring it with them? Was it under the ring? Why would the WWE have rocking chairs under the ring? And why light a lantern just to blow it out 5 seconds later? And now under every wwe ring there will be lanterns and rocking chairs?

    ReplyDelete
  153. 10 years from now, I will also remember the Gerry Briscoe vs Pat Patterson lingerie match featuring the skidmark stinkface. So I guess it couldn't be considered too bad.

    ReplyDelete
  154. What point are you making? Forgettable garbage is generally NOT AS BAD as memorable garbage.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Well he announces with Jerry Lawler which makes him not look so awful in comparison.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Bray Wyatt is like a redneck Tonberry with that lantern. He should just swing it as he wrestles and no-sell every move his opponent uses.

    ReplyDelete
  157. And how did they get all the lights to turn on and off on command? And how did mild-mannered Husky Harris transform into the demented Bray Wyatt?

At least we know how The One Man Gang became Akeem!

I have some conflicting emotions on the Wyatt family debut.

I actually thought the "journalist investigation" throughout the night was really cool, and well done, and when he went inside that old house, I genuinely felt a bit creeped out.

The entrance was great too. The "we're here", the music, and the lantern walk were all great stuff.

It was the beatdown itself that disappointed me. In my opinion, Kane was a bad target because, post Team Hell No, the fans do not have a lot of investment in him. The attack itself I thought was off a bit, as Kane got two knockdowns in, when in my opinion it should have been complete domination by the Wyatts. The actual stuff done thereafter came off as flat to me. Maybe I have been spoiled by the Shield, and the Nexus's godly ring and set destruction, but what the Wyatts did came off as "meh." Creativity points for the rocking chair though.

As for the chants, I do have to disagree with the majority, because I'm a firm believer in Tazz's mantra of "these fans pay their money, buy their ticket, and can chant what they like." I think if you do a segment that's entertaining enough, you either get the smark fans so focused that they don't chant, or you get the majority to provide such heat that there's no way a chant like that gets heard.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Knuckleberry PinnJuly 9, 2013 at 8:06 AM

excellent point. i'll add in rikishi and too cool as well

    ReplyDelete
  160. What's interesting is the same thing happened to Tensei almost immediately when the crowds were all over him with the Albert chants. But in the crowd's defense the gimmick was lame as fuck.

    ReplyDelete
  161. It's those times when the smarks come out of the woodwork to complain the loudest.

    ReplyDelete
  162. As Kane was getting the shit kicked out of him by a new faction, the crowd was calling out for Kane's former tag team partner to come help him. Not really a big head-scratcher to me.

    ReplyDelete
  163. "Wyatt gets hit with the AA...for ONE DAMAGE?!"

    ReplyDelete
  164. There's a difference between being a smark and trying to get yourself over/be the wittiest guy in the room. When I went to Raw there was a kid, couldn't have been older than 10, booing and yelling, "the Shield sucks!" I decided to have a little fun and said, "Hey kid, the Shield doesn't suck." "Yes they do!" "No they don't! They're undefeated. How can they be undefeated and suck?!" The kid stops yelling for a second, thinks, and then yells, "Boo! I hate you, Shield!" then looks back at me and I sort of nodded.

The key difference to me is that I wasn't like, "you need to youtube Jon Moxley and Tyler Black!" I wasn't being the smartest guy in the world. I was having fun.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Gotta say, "Brad Maddox as Eric Bischoff" is a pretty good idea. He should try to reunite the No Limit Soldiers, or bring back the Kiss Demon.

I mean, sure, it wouldn't move the product forward, but it's better than being just another generic heel authority figure. Positioning him as little comedic figure unto himself might be the way to go, as opposed to just arbitrarily picking feuds with top faces.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Bray's finisher is a knife, you'll need a Phoenix Down to kick out of that one.

    ReplyDelete
  167. I was thinking of Tensai's reaction as well, but I thought his gimmick was fine.

Bigger question is how to avoid this. Sure Husky Harris hasn't been gone as long, but Albert hadn't been in WWE for almost a decade I think. What can you do? Never repackage someone ever without acknowledging it? Have crowds gotten too smarky for their own good?

    ReplyDelete
  168. Agreed. Do you remember when Chainsaw Charlie debuted on RAW and the crowd pretty much knew it was Terry Funk and started to chant his name?

    ReplyDelete
  169. I think it's simple. Don't do like Tensai and completely ignore the Albert chants. Have Wyatt cut a promo about how he used to be a sheep and now he's found his true self.

    ReplyDelete
  170. Albert was a huge part of the show for many years before he left, though, and was pretty recognizable. Nothing they did with Tensai hid who he was. The Bray Wyatt thing is a repackaging of a guy who was on TV for a cup of coffee, if that.

    ReplyDelete
  171. For the time that Husky was on television, he was given some stuff to do. Remember the discipline angle with CM Punk where Punk had to haze him and beat him over the back with a belt?

    ReplyDelete
  172. Yeah, until anything else happens. See also: Fandango

    ReplyDelete
  173. I said this to someone else below:
For the time that Husky was on television, he was given some stuff to do. Remember the discipline angle with CM Punk where Punk had to haze him and beat him over the back with a belt?

He was there a short time but he was getting major TV time being a part of the New Nexus and such.

    ReplyDelete
  174. Agreed... and that worked for Axel as well. They came right out front and said this guy had a stupid gimmick and now he's here to kick some ass. You don't hear the crowd chanting "Michael McGillicutty" every week.

I was a little surprised with the Husky Harris chants... he looks fairly different and his run was pretty brief and non-descript in the grand scheme of things.

The Tensai thing was A) a big shock when he finally took his hood off and it was like "holy shit, that's Albert!" and B) his debut was on the night after WrestleMania 28 in front of the smarkiest crowd of the year.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Here's the problem, WWE should not insult the intelligence of the audience. A majority of fans know who Bray Wyatt was prior to his debut last night. You are not fooling us.

Just tell the audience that Husky Harris made a life changing transformation and wanted to be someone else. Make up something silly like that.

    ReplyDelete
  176. Something that really stood out to me was that CM Punk beat Randy Orton by using his finisher, one time, clean as a sheet. No back-and-forths with finishers... no distractions... just hit his finisher and pinned the guy.

Either proves that Punk is now a tippy-top guy, or Orton has lost his shine... or a little of both.

    ReplyDelete
  177. Yep... if they acknowledge it, the chants will stop . Just like when someone throws the "what" stuff back into the face of the fans, they stop that too.

    ReplyDelete
  178. Chris Jericho made this point a few years ago: Internet has ruined wrestling and it's element of surprise.

    ReplyDelete
  179. Yep! When did it fall so out of vogue to rate shows based on good wrestling matches with good results? It reminds me of the South Park version of Vince McMahon: "They're decent wrestlers but let's see how they develop their through-lines in the third act."

    ReplyDelete
  180. Any show that ends like that is a thumbs up in my book.

    ReplyDelete
  181. I'll never understand how people can let crowd reactions influence their own enjoyment of a show. They cheer louder it adds stars to the rating? The crowd is quiet or chants something different, so the angle is a bust? Investing too much in crowd reactions gives us Hogan getting a title reign in 2002 as well as aborted pushes for guys who might fall on quiet crowds on a given night. A good match is a good match regardless of whether the live crowds chant "this is awesome".

    ReplyDelete
  182. I'm all for the "something for everyone" approach to wrestling TV, but what portion of the fanbase is an angle like the Vickie/McMahons one supposed to appeal to?

    ReplyDelete
  183. Face Michael Cole is generally inoffensive. Anything is better than his stupid heel character.

    ReplyDelete
  184. Exactly. I mean, a great crowd responding to a great match can put the viewing experience over the top, but I don't watch wrestling (or any other form of entertainment) to see/hear/care about what other people watching think of it. "I really enjoyed this album until I read the reviews and realized my friends weren't listening to it."

    ReplyDelete
  185. Such a weird coincidence: I think I said on here before that I wished they had held out on the Waylon Mercy gimmick until Barry Windham signed, giving him that instead of The Stalker. He could have got that gimmick over huge and been around for a while. Now, years later, his nephew and namesake is doing a similar gimmick.

    ReplyDelete
  186. Yeah its not as though you need to read dirtsheets to be able to see that Wyatt is Husky. Just douchey marks. Fuck em.

    ReplyDelete
  187. That's fine though. They didn't need to be the nWo debuting, or even the Shield. An interesting midcard faction works for me. Just because they aren't the Horsemen doesn't mean they are the Godwinns.

    ReplyDelete
  188. Came here to say something very similar. I adore the Wyatt character(s), it's genius, but that debut -after the awesomeness in the Wyatt house - underwhelmed me.

I wanted them to talk, to explain themselves in a unique way, but we got an average beat down and...that's it.

The idea that someone said about teasing a three-person family then suddenly debuting a dozen would have been fabulous. I hope the way they've broke with routine and debuted them just before a PPV (rather than at one, or on the next Raw) means they'll make an impact on Sunday, somehow.

    ReplyDelete
  189. Start a Statler and Waldorff gimmick account or I swear to God I'll ban you lol.

    ReplyDelete
  190. I think its just people being contrarion for the sake of it. People loved Bryan, Benoit, etc when they weren't being pushed up top. Once WWE gives their stamp of approval, the guys lose their "coolness" for some people.

    ReplyDelete
  191. I always thought they should have that as part of the show but with old time wrestlers like Sarge, Piper, or Flair.

    ReplyDelete
  192. Because being contrarion is the #1 goal of smarkdom

    ReplyDelete
  193. Bryan beats Sheamus clean in a strong opening match. Punk beats Orton clean in the main event. Minimal Cena, with Henry punking him out again. Wyatt Family debut beating down a name guy. McMahon nonsense aside, this is a decent go home show. I'm not sure what a good RAW would even read like anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  194. I think that's the same thing that happened with Daniel's win last week. I don't remember Randy hitting the RKO before tapping out. Wonder if they're going anywhere with that - Randy hasn't hit the RKO in a singles match now twice in a row.

    ReplyDelete
  195. I actually get the feeling that all of AJ's heeling it up on Kaitlyn will result in Kaitlyn one-upping her by stealing Dolph from her. Which itself is kinda heelish but I could see it happening.

    ReplyDelete
  196. First hour: Punk defeats Cena to win the title in a loser-cannot-be-champion-for-two-years iron man match

Second hour: Daniel Bryan taps out the Undertaker in a 45-minute Hell in a Cell, then cuts a promo about how he is better than Punk. This draws out Alberto Del Rio who is sick of being glossed over and challenges Bryan for a match later in the evening for his World title.

Third hour: Segment one -- Wyatt family decimates Orton, Kane and Ryback. The Shield confronts them and they have a tense staredown. Segment two -- Daniel Bryan taps out Alberto Del Rio to win the World title, after which a challenge is laid out and accepted by CM Punk for a unification match at SummerSlam.

Review: "Two great matches to start the show, but by the third hour I was like 'this is too much wrestling for one night!'"
