Summerslam too obvious?

So the ending for the Bryan/Cena match at Summerslam seems to be set in stone. Bryan wins with the Small Package, then Orton comes out at Vince's command, RKO, 1 2 3, new champion Randy Orton. It would tell a good story, and the blowoff between Orton and Bryan would (hopefully) send Bryan to the Main Event for good this time.

Now the one thing with this is that it seems too obvious. And sometimes when match results get too obvious, Vince changes them. I.e Jeff Hardy's attacker, Chris Jericho winning the 2012 Royal Rumble, and I'm sure there's others that I'm forgetting at this point.

Any chance that Vince goes full retard and changes the finish on us?

Although Jericho would have made sense winning the '12 Rumble, it was planned to be Sheamus all along.  So that one doesn't really support your argument.

Anyway, they have been plowing forward full steam ahead with the ABC booking as of late, and there's really no reason to change it up.  Especially if they can clean up on bookmakers dumb enough to take bets on it.  The reason it's obvious is because it makes SENSE.  They've even been doing foreshadowing with Vince's desire to screw both Cena & Bryan out of the title and his desire to find a champion like HHH but younger.  So no, I don't think they're messing with this one.

  1. Predictable isn't always bad. Austin beating Shawn at WM14 was predictable. I mean...Russo was unpredictable and look where that got us.

  2. Just because it is obvious doesn't mean it isn't the right decision. Orton ripping the heart out of the fans by cashing in not only does the job of turning him heel, it leads to hopefully an epic pay off down the line... I've always felt to become a top face there is more money in the chase than actually being champion, if executed correctly DB could become a permanent mainstay top guy.

  3. This is part of the reason I "acquire" PPVs, not pay for them.

    ReplyDelete
  4. The unobvious thing is to have Daniel Bryan hit the SPoD on Cena to win the title, then hit it AGAIN on Orton to retain.

But they will probably just tease it as a 2.9 count instead.

    ReplyDelete
  5. The other part being that you don't want to pay $50+ for that which you could get for free?

    ReplyDelete
  6. I think that y'all are forgetting that there are still a lot of PPVs between now and Wrestlemania.

Wouldn't a Cena/Bryan rematch for the title on the next show after Summerslam (I have no idea what it's called) be a better option for an Orton cash in?

    ReplyDelete
  7. I find it so annoying when films or TV shows undermine a good build-up and potentially great pay-off for the sake of 'surprise'. But, credit where it's due, WWE has been on a bit of a roll lately with coherent storylines and patient build-up, and I'm really hoping Summerslam works out in the most obvious way possible.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Yeah...which mostly sucked.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yeah they really need to figure out a way to make PPVs affordable.

    ReplyDelete
  10. When are you going to write more Tidbits, Herb?

    ReplyDelete
  11. We are all forgetting one more thing: Randy told Cena "I'll cash in on YOU when you least expect it."

What if Orton does something that has never been done before, and cashes in on Cena DURING the Cena vs Bryan match? Say the ref gets bumped, and Bryan has Cena in the Yes Lock for like, two minutes. Then Orton comes out, RKOs Bryan, cashes in, and pins Cena for the title.

This gives WWE more options for all three guys over the next several months.

Sometimes, the most predictable way is the best way. That said, oh man, I will lose my gourd (in a good way...mostly) if I go to SS and Bryan wins the title only to lose via cash-in.

  13. 1. This basically can backfire HUGE since I do not fucking trust Vince, Cena, or Orton not to use this to once again bury Bryan for the sin of getting over without permission, ESPECIALLY since it was widely known that they wanted to do Cena/Orton for about two years until the rise of Punk, the sudden availability of Rock, and the crowd at Royal Rumble 2011 shitting all over the two (Orton and Cena) when they teased them fighting again, forced them to jetison it.

    2. This does nothing NOTHING for Bryan, since again, it basically implies that Cena and Orton won't send Bryan flying off a cliff back to being a curtain jerker so these tired dinosaurs can hog the spotlight again (since you fucking KNOW they will have Cena make the entire thing about how HE, NOT BRYAN, is pissed about Orton casing in and Orton ducking Cena like a coward.

    3. IF they have to go this bullshit route, at least use Sandow with Vince basically going "I say Sandow can cash in on the Raw" championship title, since at least Sandow would fit the criteria of pushing someone new, especially since only a blind fool would think that this is going to help Bryan any (ten bucks says if Orton DOES steal the title from Bryan, Bryan doesn't appear on TV for 2-3 weeks if not a MONTH complete with them doing the punting angle to basically jetison him and reset him back to being a one-dimensional punching bag so they can force Cena on to the people as the only person worthy of feuding with a heel champion Orton for the next eight months until Cena wins the belt at Wrestlemania......

    ReplyDelete
  14. But I'm outright calling it: Orton punting Bryan will bring the end to the "Yes!" and "No!" chanting and reset Bryan back to his generic face personality in terms of head trauma leading to personality reformatting back to factory model condition (complete with loss of his beard and hair cut) and him stuck feuding with Kane, because Bryan doesn't remember Kane and thinks Kane is evil because AJ tricks him into thinking she was his girlfriend and Kane is a bad guy for the evilulz....

  15. You heard it, Jesse is calling it. No point in even buying the PPV now.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Jesse is that guy from Reddit?

    ReplyDelete
  17. We need to get Cena involved with Fucking Tito Ortiz!

    ReplyDelete
  18. As soon as I'm done with the summer semester you fucking malcontent.

And the attitude era, mostly blew. Yeah 1997 was pretty logical and the feuds transitioned reasonably into each other, but things started going to hell pretty quickly. Fuck crash TV.

And even if Crash TV equals ratings and PPV buys, from an artistic standpoint it's miserable.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Precisely.

However, in my neck of the woods, you have to be subscribed to what you would call "cable" to order them in the first place. I don't watch TV enough to justify it, and any show that I do want to watch can either be streamed or bought on DVD.

Even WWE.com restricts our country from paying for them and viewing them, because it would be a conflict of interest to the company that carries them.

So really, it's not $50, but more like... I don't know, $100 a month at least.

    Americans, Canadians: count your blessings.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Regardless of future storylines it would be pretty epic if DB beat Cena with the SPoD then did the same to Orton moments later.... he'd be like the new Jericho in the sense that they always refer to him beating Rock and Austin in the same night.... DB can have that tag forever with Orton/Cena.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 3-way matches and 3-way feuds suck. That would be terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Nothing wrong with a cena/Orton feud whilst Bryan is trying to 'earn' a rematch. As long as Bryan gets the title back if course.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Actually, they don't "need" to because, unlike TNA, WWE is profitable doing what they are currently doing.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It'd be a unique twist to an obvious storyline progression. It'd be even more awesome if Orton came through the crowd or something with his ref and was able to catch both guys by surprise since his music wouldn't be blasting and he wouldn't be coming down the entrance way.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yeah, that Triple H/Shawn Michaels/Chris Benoit feud sucked ass.

    ReplyDelete
  26. That's a pretty good idea actually.

    ReplyDelete
  27. There's a lot of truth to this, although I think 1998 was also really good for the most part. 1999 is when things really started to get out of control and logic was thrown out in favor of surprises for the sake of surprise and constant instant gratification.

2000 was a return to normalcy and another awesome year.

    ReplyDelete
  28. That's not true, because the Attitude Era sucked.

    Right?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Raven/DDP/Child Muderer are calling you a dope and stealing your coco puffs.

    ReplyDelete
  30. You just didn't....."Get It?"!!!!

Seriously though, you're 100% correct. The attitude era almost finished me off as a fan.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm fine with this scenario since it logically progresses the storyline, and keeps Bryan in the spotlight.

What I DON'T want under any, and The Favra means ANY, circumstances is some kind of convoluted swerve (Bryan turning to reveal he's been working with Vince, HHH turn that leads to a Bryan/HHH match, etc.). Couldn't you see some kind if HHH swerve that leads to a Bryan/HHH match, ala Punk/HHH from a few summers ago.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I don't want Bryan walking away from Summerslam with the belt if he's not going to be treated like the top guy. CM Punk's reign was brutal with Cena headlining PPV's while Punk was on the under card. If Orton does walk away with the belt, the best course of action is to build Bryan to a Royal Rumble win and big Wrestlemania win, and then let him be the top guy.

    ReplyDelete
  33. But Daniel Bryan's physique isn't nearly good enough to be a WWE champion!

    ReplyDelete
  34. John Boy does not want to be ANYWHERE Jenna Jameson has been.

    ReplyDelete
  35. And he certainly didn't get the F out.

    ReplyDelete
  36. The very reason I hope Vince changes the match result. Sick of seeing people say "At SummerSlam when this happens" as If the match has already aired and we know the outcome

    ReplyDelete
  37. You must have hated Wrestlemania 29.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Orton is not cashing in!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I meant at SummerSlam. They may do it the next night on Raw though.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Russo always used the 'it's too obvious' excuse to justify his crash tv nonsense. Cornette always responded the same way Scott did; it's obvious because it makes sense. Swerves are only effective if used sparingly. If there's never any consistency, then by definition you can't have swerves.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Daniel Bryan is in great shape, his biggest flaw (in the eyes of McMahon or Triple H) is his height.

    ReplyDelete
  42. So the same guy who lost the WHC in 18 seconds at WM will lose the WWE title seconds after winning it at the 2nd or 3rd biggest PPV of the year? God I hope not. It would be awesome if that "fan" from South Africa interrupted Orton on his way to ring to cash in the briefcase.

    ReplyDelete
  43. There are some notable exceptions, but I agree with Gavin 3 Ways are usually weak. I wish they would do the ECW 3 Way Dance style matches where 1 guy gets eliminated.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Once again putting words into people's mouths.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yeah I think if WWE wants to hear the Dolph Ziggler cashing in reaction only the opposite, that's what they're going to get if "I hear voices" interrupts Bryan's championship winning celebration.

And of course that's why they're doing it. They could even drag it out into a 10-12 minute match (which would then make the raw gauntlet matches foreshadowing) just to see exactly how long they could keep a crowd in a state of panic over every near fall.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Let's not forget that the consensus at MitB 2011 was that Punk would win, then drop the belt to the MitB winner. Occasionally they are smart enough to realize they have lightening in a bottle and run with it. But if they put Bryan over Cena in anything even remotely resembling a clean finish, even if he immediately loses to Orton, it'll show faith in him they (rightfully) never showed Ryback or Del Rio or any of the others they were grooming to be top guys.

    ReplyDelete
  47. They're both Bros with Joe, he could make it happen!

    ReplyDelete
  48. It's true, as soon as The Rock came back three years ago we knew he was going to end his recent run with a "passing the torch" loss to Cena. Still, they have to establish Bryan moving forward. They have to have more than 2 top-tier guys outside of Cena and Punk. Cena won't be around forever. Neither will be his 5-10 year old fans.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The main thing that bothered me about the Attitude Era was the start of the "douche face". Austin went from a driven if bitter loner who personified bravery and being your own man into a lunatic/domestic terrorist. And the Rock, Face!DX? Gah...

I dunno, I like babyfaces who are actually decent people that I can in good conscience support.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm not going to criticize Vince, cause it made a lot of sense and made everybody a ton of money. And when I was a dumb kid first exposed to the Attitude Era it was certainly cool. But looking back on it...ugh. I'm kind of ashamed.

    ReplyDelete
  51. WM29 was a highly disappointing show, same with Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber

it woulda been awesome if 3rd bass had a song call 'the douche face' instead of 'the gas face'

  55. This guy gets it. They save the cash-ins for TV now.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I get the impression that HHH doesn't care about height, he cares about being buff and in shape.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I don't do Reddit.

    ReplyDelete
  58. so she never did a scene with Kendra Lust then?

    ReplyDelete
  59. I'd like that to be a tradition. Every decade, one guy gets to beat the top two guys in the company on the same night. That also seems like a pretty solid motivation for Orton to finally turn heel.

    ReplyDelete
  60. That feud was pretty played out after their interminable series in 2009, so I can't say I'm looking forward to more, especially since it will be the exact same heel/face situation. Hopefully any feud with Cena would be brief.

    ReplyDelete
  61. It's pretty telling that one of the most overt face actions in YEARS, Ryback hugging Vickie and telling her that it'll get better, was done by a heel. I'm with you on that.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I think Bryan was the last guy to cash in on a PPV.

    ReplyDelete
  63. One of the purest good acts. I'd say Sheamus challenging Mark Henry was also up there. Or maybe some of the Kane/Bryan interactions, though those got tainted pretty quickly.

That Ryback/Vickie thing was just mind-boggling. Is Vince just allergic to kindness or mercy? Even if you think Vickie is a crap GM and annoying, if you see somebody crying, console them.

I actually think it'd be a perfect thing for Punk to do, considering his connection the Guerrero's.
