Thoughts on the direction of Superior Spiderman

[ass-kissing intro]Hey Scott! Love the blog! Long time fan![/ass-kissing intro]

Anyway, quick question: How long to you think Marvel goes into full Vince Russo mode and brings Parker back? I've been reading the gripes from other comic book heads and they seem to want Parker back, but I am enjoying this new ass-kicking ruthless Spiderman.

Regards,

   The Charismatic e-Negro Jef Vinson

Superior is generally my favorite and first read of the week, and Dan Slott has this thing solicited until at least #24 as of right now, so Octo-Spidey is staying put for the moment.  Plus Superior Foes might be the funniest book this side of Deadpool, with the petty squabbling and debates over tipping hostage waiters ruling the day.  So I'm pretty damn happy with the status quo as it stands and it's nice to see an EFFECTIVE Spider-Man, even if we can all see that Otto's blackmail of JJJ and sudden influx of henchmen are going to come back and bite him in the ass sooner or later.  But that's the fun of it, because he's SUCH an asshole that you're kind of cheering for him, and I definitely don't want to him dead again.  Hopefully they can find another Spider-Man analogue to stick him into (Spidey 2099?  Scarlet Spider?  Agent Venom?) when Parker reclaims his body around the time of Amazing Spider-Man 2.  Plus Superior is generally the highest selling of the Marvel Now titles, so you have to think they're keeping things just as they are, as long as Slott delivers that sweet sales cheddar.

Cue Jesse Baker rant here.

  1. I admit I love the irony of how Ock is able to handle Peter's responsibilities better than Pete ever could. Also when he shows up at a scene and starts ordering cops to help, something Peter never considered doing as an Avenger. Still rough at times as I find it so hard to buy nobody but Charlie noticing how Spider-Man is suddenly talking so arrogant with none of his usual joking around and such and even killing guys and only being put on probation by the Avengers for it. Plus, after re-reading stuff of Ock murdering folks in cold blood, hard to get into him as the hero so enjoy when his arrogance gets the best of him sometimes. So it's not as horrible as I worried it'd be but we all know Pete's coming back so guess just enjoy the ride while we can.

  2. I'm not a superhero reader, so I'm clearly not the intended audience. However, based on the word of mouth (both good and bad), I gave Superior Spider-man a shot and it's a lot of fun. I'm really happy to see Humberto Ramos on art. His composition skills are awesome and he always contorts the bodies just right to get the maximum effect of story-telling. The writing...it's a fun book. The pacing is great, there are a lot of witty set-ups and lines, it's really fun. The dialog is a little clunky for my tastes, but overall, I enjoyed reading it.

With superheroes it's hard because it's a different set of skills than I'm used to. These are characters that have been around forever and the audience has seen almost every possible story, so I like that someone is going in a different direction.

  3. I don't really have interest in Superior, but I will say I enjoyed Dick Grayson as Batman immensely and thus hated it when DC bumped him back down to Nightwing. Prepare yourselves, Ock-Spidey fans.

  4. I have really enjoyed the run so far, I though Slott would have run out of gas by #12. I remember the uproar when Slott "killed" off Parker. As if no comic book character has ever been brought back from the dead.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I just hope they don't go right back to the old Doc Ock. Like Scott said, either make him one of the other "Spiders" or a new gimmick.

My idea is that Ock is smart enough to know Parker will get his body back because "Those heroes always find a way to come back" So he digs up one of Jackal's cloning machines and creates a Parker clone that he sends his consciousness into as soon as Peter beats him.

  6. Scott, the book is NOT selling well. Sales are dropping like flies and quite frankly, if you have been fucking paying attention, Marvel has repeatedly stated they are not fixing things for the Amazing Spider-Man movie (going so far as to release a series of flashback mini-series rather than fucking undoing the change).

Hell, they aren't even letting Superior Spider-Man be an Avenger proper anymore, as they are demoting him of the main book into the Luke Cage run Avengers spin-off they are setting up, he's become such toxic baggage/

The best fucking way to fix the problem is fucking FIRE Slott and fucking cancel Superior Spider-Man and retcon the ENTIRE debacle as being one of the seven nightmare timelines created by Scott Summers when he murdered Xavier and that basically EVERYTHING since the end of Spider- Island has been part of the nightmare "evil wins" future.

The REAL Spider-Man and the REAL NON-MASS MURDERING Doc Octopus join Uncanny Avengers, where they fight the body stealing, mass murdering Doc Ock after Kang grabs him from his timeline to join the "The Seven", the big evil mega group that includes Red Skull, Doctor Doom, Anhillius, Ahab, and Kang that are destined to bring about the Days of Future Past timeline after the seven bad guys merge to recreate Onslaught and enslave humanity with the Sentinels they are going to use as henchmen......

  7. Tell that to DC fans who've seen a good number of characters killed off and never brought back.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Fuck, not only did they kill Wally West but erased ALL TRACES OF HIS EXISTENCE.

    ReplyDelete
  9. The Avengers shit was the worst. Half the Avengers team has been replaced with duplicates, possessed, or flat out mind-control and Slott fucking portrayed them as fucking retarded idiots who could not tell that Peter had been replaced with a sociopath. Slott's hackery at his finest, as the entire fucking plot of Superior requires EVERYONE fucking EVERYONE being stupid as a sack of rocks to fucking prop up his Marty Stu (as Slott has gone on the record as saying he ALWAYS liked/related to Doc Ock more than Spider-Man when he killed Spider-Man off).

    ReplyDelete
  10. When Peter DOES come back, he should kick the asses of the Avengers for being fucking retarded babies for fucking not seeing that a monster had switched bodies with him. And then Pym slap Carlie Cooper for fucking sitting on the information, because she was a pissy little cunt who was more than willing to let MJ be raped by Otto rather than tell her her suspicions.

When you said "Cue Jesse Baker rant here." I didn't actually think he would DO it.

The serious Batman/wise-cracking side kick dynamic was reversed and it was good reading all around.

Didn't like Batman, Inc that much though.

Ramos' art works PERFECTLY in this title.

I actually thought that Ock would have put Parker's consciousness in a cloned body (sans spider-powers) and he would be a normal dude.

  15. You magnificent crazy bastard.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Except the actual comics that he appeared in. You realize those still exist, right?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Have you NOT experienced Jesse on this?

I'm not a Marvel reader at all (with very few exceptions over the years) but I think I'm going to start picking up the past issues of Superior because I've heard too many good things to ignore the book.

    ReplyDelete
  18. It amazes me that you can get so upset about something you don't even pay for.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Plus, they're going to eventually reintroduce him, they just haven't yet, two years in. I'm all for a slow burn on some of these things, and waiting until you have the right team at the right time with the right story to tell. There's no reason to rush it, especially since they went out of their way to reestablish Barry Allen as the Flash not long before the revamp.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh man. I just realized where this is all heading.

Doctor Octopus...as BEN REILLY. I'm not joking.

Now, I might be a simple country lawyer, but to me that looks like Spider-Man holding down three of the top 10 slots for July.

  23. Don't even mention that three of the top ten are Snyder books and two more are Johns. His head will explode.

  24. The old adage in comic books is that only Bucky, Jason Todd, and Uncle Ben remain dead. Of course, Bucky and Jason Todd came back to life.

  25. Lawyered! Scott just dropped the mic on Baker.

    ReplyDelete
  26. You know Jesse, this post makes me decide to put you in the same category as Mark Millar:

Excessive swearing that makes you look like an idiot.

    Congratulations.

Also, wouldn't you want to undo everything from One More Day and on? Basically undo the deal with the devil B.S.?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Good. At least we get to remember Wally fondly instead of some horrible dark mirror version that the DCU has turned into.

He got probably the best character arc out of all other mainstream superheroes. He started out as the peppy young sidekick, took over the role and not only grew into it but in many ways surpassed his mentor, got married, had kids, and then sort of shuffled away quietly when his mentor returned to take centre stage. True, we didn't see him "retire," but that's the way I like to picture him.

So yeah, keep him away from Nu-DC, I say.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I made a promise to myself not to buy any Spidey titles since the One More Day stuff where a deal with devil was made and the reset button was hit, making a lot of changes that don't make sense (see also: Nu-DC).

That said, I've been honestly interested in Spidey-Ock (or "Spock" as some fans call him). I might start picking up the trades and enjoy them until devil-making Peter comes back. He hasn't been written properly in decades, anyway, even before One More Day. The last time I truly enjoyed anything Spider-Man related was the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon, which was, well, SPECTACULAR.

  31. Jesse doesn't buy any of these books either. He steals them.

  32. This is coming from the guy who didn't get the Captain Marvel run by PAD. "Errrr big themes make my head hurt!"

    ReplyDelete
  33. I've been reading Spider-Man for way too long (have several hundred consecutive issues).
I dislike the underplaying of reactions to SpOck's actions. He has literally murdered someone in cold blood, and the entire supporting cast is like 'mmm, Spidey seems a touch off today, doesn't he?'
Given the history, particularly in a universe with the Chameleon, clones etc. this reaction seems muted at best.
The issue-to-issue craft is perfectly acceptable though.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The Avengers did all the standard protocol tests on him, and they found nothing wrong. So, they think it is spidey.
None of the witnesses to him murdering masssacre would say anything other than it was self defence.
And more and more of the supporting cast are beginning to suspect somethign is wrong (Charlie, the police captain, Mary Jane)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Now I may be a simple country Hyper-Chicken lawyer. . .
    Or Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Am I the only one on the planet that actually LIKED the Scarlet Spider outfit?

The one thing I liked about the Clone Saga is how Jackal dropped the mic on Reilly during a battle:
"Yeah right! This coming from someone in tights and a torn sweatshirt! At least the OTHER Spider-Man had marketing potential..I doubt we'll be seeing any Scarlet Spider action figures on the shelves for Christmas!"

    ReplyDelete
  37. I've loved Slott's run on Spider-man. I hadn't read Amazing for years and was only reading Peter David's Spidey book. When that got cancelled with the end of OMD I dropped Spidey completely. I picked up Amazing 600 and I've been hooked ever since. I was considering dropping the book again after 700 but I'm glad I didn't.
When Peter comes back, I don't see him being in the Avengers anymore. And Doc Ock almost has to get his own book after this storyline is over.

    ReplyDelete
  38. did Millar do Wanted? Cause I liked Wanted. And I like bringing up I liked Wanted because no one else liked Wanted. Maybe I wanted to like wanted, so I liked it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Scarlett Spider already is a ruthless kick ass version of Spiderman, Venom (Brock era) was an even more ruthless kick ass version of Spiderman, this is nothing new or exciting. Once you've seen Parker act like a douche to someone that doesn't expect it the shock value has worn off.

    ReplyDelete
  40. No, I loved it actually. Wished they had just given him an ongoing.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Fucking fucking fucking fuck fuck fucking.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Same here. I actually hated the vast majority of Morrison's Batman run. I loved the year with Dick and Damian, loved the Joker prose book, and liked select issues of Batman & Son, but I despised almost everything about The Black Glove, R.I.P. and Batman Inc. Just not an interesting version of Batman to me.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I liked Ben Reilly better than Peter Parker at the time.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I hate the premise of SSM, but Jesse's rants actually make me want to buy every issue.

  48. I thought Wanted was one of the worst things I'd ever read. It felt like a 12-year old in writing class who's told they're allowed to use swearing, violence, and sex in their creative work and they just go nuts.
