CM Punk: TNA's Savior?

Apparently, CM Punk's contract with WWE expires next summer. Separately, TNA is looking for a new home base.

Forget for a moment the fact that none of the following will actually happen...what if TNA decided to settle in somewhere in Chicago, and, when Punk's contract expired, Dixie Carter offered Punk carte blanche to run the creative side of the company however he wants? And allow him to bring in anyone he can get?

Would that be enough to make TNA a viable wrestling company?

CM Punk?  The guy who even his friends think is a grumpy asshole with no common sense filter on his mouth?  I don't see him being a very effective booker.  Say what you will about HHH, but he knows how to talk to people.  Punk seems more in the Raven mold, as the super-smart guy with great ideas who needs a Paul Heyman to actually turn them into usable TV.

Comments

  1. If TNA is gonna drop some Panda money on someone who could HELP turn TNA around, it should be Jim Ross. I dont think any one person can do it on their own.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Why not CM Punk's buddies, Colt and Gabe? That's the only way TNA has a shot of surviving and Punk may show up to that.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I dont know if it is just me, but everytime I see Colt he comes across as a minor leaguer.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I agree. I think hes talented and maybe with the right push/packaging he could do well but as he is now he wouldnt do TNA much good.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Just offer Scott D'Amore a good contract already. He still booked the best era TNA ever had.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Jarrett is now back at TV so I am guessing he will move up in power with the company.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I don't mean as a wrestler. I was thinking more talent relations. Everyone seems it like him and I trust him to find new talent.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Only chance of TNA getting Punk is getting Heyman first.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I'll assume someone other than Jesse sent this, because this is one of his angles. What's Punk's style, how is he going to book a company? What would keep him from bringing in his own crew and trying to get them over, like every wrestler/booker in history? As a long time WWF/E fan (or mark if you so choose), I'm not sure why the company would be so much different. He'd talk a big game about how the Tyson Kidd's of the world draw the short straw, and then probably turn around and push Luke Gallows and Domino.

  10. TNA doesn't have the money to afford Punk. If a lighter schedule and favorable booking is what Punk wants, he can get that from WWE. The way WWE is run now (and I give a lot of the credit to HHH, honestly) they're willing to work with guys who don't really want to be wrestlers full time anymore like Jericho, Brock, Taker and HHH himself.

Punk's a made man in WWE, he's not Cena but he's right up there. They wouldn't let him go at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Honestly, even Cabana isnt good enough for them.

    ReplyDelete
  12. He's going to get a fat contract next year-no way he leaves.

Also "Any daughter of mine knows that Arn Anderson is not to be trusted" was line of the night on tosh.0

    ReplyDelete
  13. The idea is nice but is never gonna happen. I think Ross is enjoying life outside of wrestling now.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I could never hate on a person that semi-regularly brings up Arn Anderson on his show.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Booking, nah...

But if he was VP of talent relations, most definitely.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Aren't they surviving right now?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I can.

Daniel Tosh is the Caliber Winfield of TV

    ReplyDelete
  18. I can not stand Daniel Tosh.

Anybody can do what he does. And plus his stand up isn't funny.

Punk: Now Kurt, I'm gonna have you wear this pair of chick panties on your head for this angle. It really captures the psychology of this feud.

Angle: I'm not sure I want to do this...

Punk: YOU'RE EVERYTHING EVERYONE SAID YOU WERE, YOU'RE NOT A TEAM PLAYER, YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW I'M RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING, YOU'RE A SELFISH PRICK WHOSE HEAD LOOKS LIKE A GIANT THUMB! I'M GONNA RIP THE SHIT OUT OF YOU ON MY NEXT DOCUMENTARY DVD!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Where have you been for the last 2 weeks? Jim Ross didn't retire, he was fired over Flair's drunken antics at the 2k Sports panel on Summerslam weekend, and that was WWE's cover-story to avoid bad p.r.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Possibly, but he might have been the brainchild of Tosh.0 and for that I'd give him credit.

I've never seen his stand-up so I don't know about it.

For the last decade or two, there have only been three American stand-ups worth discussing: George Carlin, Louis CK and Patrice Oneal. Everyone else shall kneel before them.

    ReplyDelete
  22. He's still an old man, and if he had anything left to offer anybody WWE wouldn't have fired him.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Its a shame that he died. Patrice O'Neal was mad funny.

    ReplyDelete
  24. And on old man that has forgotten more about wrestling than HHH/Steph will ever know.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I miss him a lot. I put him up there with anybody.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Vince McMahon has always hated him and wanted to let him go, and he has been fired a couple of times before, dating back to the mid-90's. This was just the perfect excuse, it has nothing to do with how good Jim Ross is. Vince hates the way he looks, and thinks he's too Southern.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Supposedly he wants to get into MMA announcing.

    ReplyDelete
  28. If you're going that route... just offer the damn job to Raven in the first place. He's probably not too busy now.

Isn't Chicago ROH territory? Why wouldn't they go back to Memphis?

    ReplyDelete
  30. As long as Dixie Carter is in charge, the company will not succeed. I don't see her giving complete creative control to anyone and even if she did, I think she'd still want to bring in talent she thought would be good. So you'd have Punk or whoever having to figure out how to do something with Tito Ortiz.

There is one man who can save wrestling. He has the name value to attract investors, a love of the tradition and art of professional wrestling, and a great mind for the business. That man is Stone Cold Steve Austin.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I wouldn't be so sure. It really depends on how he's felt about what the company did with him the past two years. If he is as disappointed with it as a lot of fans are, I could see him saying screw it.

Now I don't see him ever going to TNA though. He hates AJ and thinks Dixie Carter is an imbecile. He'd more likely take time off and do Japan.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Uh oh...hipster alert

    ReplyDelete
  33. Punk strikes me as the type of guy who got into the business not just for his own love of it, but also just to prove people in his life wrong. I think he proved he could become a wrestler and be successful. I question his passion, certainly the PG era isn't the best era for a super creative mind. I think he leaves WWE and tries to play trumpet in a ska band or something. He certainly didn't blow his money on drugs or steroids so he should be set to do whatever he wants. He even lived the Attitude Era fan boy fantasy of banging Lita. As far as wrestling, I think his best value outside of the ring would be replacing Lawler as someone here on the blog suggested a few days ago. In the ring there is nothing left to prove, and in my opinion, his character only gets interesting in TVMA product.

    ReplyDelete
  34. you are also forgetting that Kevin Dunn also hates Jim Ross. I think he is also responsible for Jim Ross's departure.

    ReplyDelete
  35. think it was something to do with when TNA stopped letting guys work ROH and AJ didn't say anything.

Also, he's CM Punk, are you really surprised at any feud he has?

    ReplyDelete
  36. That also fits his preferred schedule more. and Hey, rightly so- if you have the money, and I assume Ross does, why work a full time schedule at 61?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hannibal Buress, Mitch Hedberg, Greg Giraldo, Joe Rogan, etc...if you think there are only 3, you're not looking hard enough.

But I was at a crappy open mic last night, and watched some Netflix stand up stuff, and was twice reminded recently how awful the vast majority of comedy out there is.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'd watch a bit for that. But only as Colt, not rehashing the Scotty Goldman abomination.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Patrice was a great talent. But in the pantheon with CK and Carlin?? Uh no.

    ReplyDelete
  40. good thing tosh doesnt do qotd, else you'd really give him the business

    ReplyDelete
  41. Not entirely, but I figured AJ was part of that group that Punk was fairly tight with. That and he's CM Punk, so I'm surprised he has a feud he hasn't said anything about. Unless I missed it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. http://www.wrestlezone.com/news/257905-cm-punk-takes-a-shot-at-aj-styles-on-twitter
There's one example of him talking about it.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Two words: Bonnie Hammer, head of USA Network.

It's no coincidence that Ross was fired from announcing on the SECOND episode of Raw after it went back to USA.

    ReplyDelete
  44. He's smart, and has had a huge success record...over ten years ago.

People grow older and lose the drive they once had. Jim Ross has said multiple times he hates the travel and work. It doesn't take a genius to figure out when people's times are up.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Keeping him off TV=/=firing him.

Vince is vindictive, but he's also cagey. If Jim Ross could be a threat, they would've kept him in contracts till he dies.

    ReplyDelete
  46. JUst cuz you lose the drive, doesnt necessarily mean you lose the acumen.

Personally I think he would be a terrible booker (citing Starrcade 89 for example) but as a talent guy and an idea guy apart of a committee he would be invaluable.

For HHH/Steph to be in the positions they are in, to let a guy go like Jim Ross is just hilarious to me. You just can't let that knowledge goto waste. I dont fear him going to any other promotion, just letting it sit on the sidelines.

I think that goes for most sports in general; the elite players rarely turn into great coaches, but role players or players who have to truly understand the game and its systems to get the most out of their talent and/or position usually fare the best. I think that's why catchers are usually plucked for big-league managerial jobs (Torre, Girardi, Scoscia, Matheny, et al) since they're accustomed to doing the most game-planning.

    ReplyDelete
  48. This was supposedly Vince and Steph's call, because they were so embarrassed by the Take 2 incident with Flair. I don't think Triple H had anything to do with it.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hicks died in 1994. Who else did you like from this century, Lenny Bruce?

    ReplyDelete
  50. I know a lot of stand-ups, but those are my three. Buress, Giraldo and Rogan are great, but they're not at that tier.

Hedberg though? Okay, you might have something.

    ReplyDelete
  51. He's certainly up there with regards to actually making me laugh and hold my stomach on the couch. He died at like, 41, and he was still improving on sheer hilarity.

    ReplyDelete
  52. And you're kind of like Test.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I will admit that I overrate Schimmel because I don't think he got enough recognition in his life. Oswalt though, I've seen him live a couple of times and he just blows me away.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Great hair and a pain pill habit? I know I've been hard on HHH (though I think his heel run so far has been his best work in a long, long time) but I meant the Titus comparison as a compliment (albeit a backhanded one). I LOVE Norman Rockwell is Bleeding and Titus (the show), and while I've enjoyed Titus' other stuff it's not been able to reach that point. I would put HHH's run from January of 2000 to his quad tear against anyone over an equal period of time. I was disillusioned with wrestling in general after Eddie and Benoit dropped the titles but watching older matches HHH was very good, but not 2000-2001 level until he stopped being full time.
