A+ Match of the Day

Hey guys thanks for all the well wishes. Just seems like a 24-hour bug and another night of medicine and rest should have me back to normal. It's just weird to go from feeling good at 2 p.m. to having the whole body get chills at 7 p.m.

Sick or healthy, TLC week must go on and this is a match that is pretty polarizing. Some people love it and others just can't stand it. I'm in the middle minority in that I don't know what to make of it. The effort was there but it didn't feel right.

Anyway from 2002 its The Undertaker defending his WWE Undisputed Championship against Jeff Hardy in a ladder match. Enjoy.

  1. If JR yelling for Hardy to "make yourself famous!" doesn't give you a little bit of a chill then you're dead inside. DEAD I TELL YOU!

  2. This is one of my favorite ladder matches. It felt more like an old school ladder match than the standard Jeff hardy spotathon. Those types of ladder matches are awesome as well when done right. However, Hardy's match with Undertaker had a great old school psychology to it that you dont see very often in ladder matches anymore (Jericho vs HBK excluded).

  3. So true. This is one of my favorite all time matches and JR's call is a huge part of that.

  4. Thread Jack! Just watched Hogan/Rock I again (snow day), and I'm still pissed that Rock won. Hindsight says Hogan goes over here.

  5. JR's announcing in this match absolutely sells it and brings the match quality up a few notches.

  6. I think he was technically still a heel for the Triple Threat at Vengeance later that month, even though there was no way he was out-heeling Angle. He was insta-turned the next night on Raw, however.

  7. I was in Manchester for this, so I watched it without the benefit of JR's call. What I loved about it was the storytelling concept: Hardy needs to think of anything he can to overcome Undertaker's size and power. In particular, that opening spot where Hardy messes with the bike to draw UT out of the ring so that he can come at Taker over the top is just gold. It was a great example of Hardy putting some psychology behind his spots, and making them work within a storytelling concept.

  8. Great match one of my favourites ever on Raw.

WWE edited the finish though I guess because of the headshot, here's the original version

  9. What would you consider the TLC match where Kane had to get the tag titles by himself?

  10. Rollin, Rollin, Rollin

  11. That match was awesome. Although somewhat sloppy. Possibly in the top 10 best SD matches of all time.

  12. Thank you for this. I'll watch it instead. I wish they would stop messing with their own history. /broken_record

  13. Yeah, Hardy is a great big man/little man match wrestler. You can see from this match why they were willing to put the belt on him later on.

Wasn't that RAW, when Hurricane was taken out before the match?

If I recall correct, Scott really didn't care for this one.

  16. If you say Smackdown, you may be thinking of another TLC match. The one I'm talking about is the one where Spike Dudley took that insane ladder bump to the face/ chest.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Is that match on the TLC DVD? If so I should watch it to see if I'm dead inside or not.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oops...you're correct. I flipped them in my head.

  19. Something I noticed last night: They have a custom WWE hanger to hold the titles for ladder matches. Is that new or did I just never notice?

    ReplyDelete
  20. That has to be new, because it's usually just a black hook holding them.

  21. Great match, terrible terrible aftermath.

IIRC, he turned with the UnAmerican stuff with Test.

  23. Hope you feel better soon. Try having some hot tea with honey and a little apple cider vinegar. Might taste a little bad, but add more honey, and that should help. Thanks for posting these great matches too. :)

  24. As I recall, Scott pretty much hated the Undertaker at this point (more than usual), because of the fact he got a RAW centered around him that did a lower rating than previous shows(I believe this was during the godawful Hogan feud), yet still got seen as this big marquee well-respected locker room leader who could do no wrong in the main event scene(which was why he didn't give the Brock/Taker Cell match the rating he gave it later).

I honestly wonder how much smoke there was with that fire, cause it seems to me that Undertaker had to have been more of a politician than we give him credit for. I believe Brock talks in his book about Taker planning on "getting his win back" after putting Brock over in the Cell, hence the Biker Chain match. There was also talk of him getting CM Punk's career stalled in 09 because Punk didn't wear a suit and tie to the airport and thus "didn't show respect for the business." as if Undertaker was helping the business by not using his locker room influence to stop the absolute rot the business has been getting into since 2001. At least Taker protecting his spot now is kinda justified because the company cannot possibly end the Streak without fucking it up, but he had to have been one of the most undercover self-centered assholes in the business at the time.

  25. Sorry if this is harsh, but aside from JR's call, the chairshot to the head was my favorite part of the match! I can't believe they cut it out!

Yeah, that was definitely in the midst of Scott's hatred for Taker. And as someone who paid $100+ to go to Unforgiven 02 for my very first WWE live event and watched Taker and Brock go to a double-DQ/no contest finish in the main event...yeah, I kinda hated him then too.

  27. Blame it on WWE being PG, Chris Benoit, and um Chris Benoit again.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes, the aftermath was Horrible, Horrible, Horrible.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Super super arguably he's a heel with Paul Heyman during the Spring of 04?

    ReplyDelete
  30. The ONLY time I ever enjoyed Limp Bizcuit was in the promo/build up videos to Austin/Rock at WM 17. Those videos got me so pumped for that match.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I fucking love this match, and they totally sucked me in even though I knew theere was no way Hardy was winning.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Remember when they were The WWE's Favorite Band?

    ReplyDelete
  33. That's a SPECIAL HANGER for the SPECIAL UNIFICATION MATCH the likes of which WE'VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE.

    ReplyDelete
  34. JR had SO MANY great calls. I miss him so much.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yeah, I have it, just need to watch it again.

    I noticed that too.

  37. Watching this live as a 10 year old, I was absolutely sure Jeff Hardy was gonna win midway through the match. Entertaining as hell.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Crowd would have exploded. Plus Rock wasn't exactly in it for the longhaul at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I love this match, because it's one of those few moments where you can see someone transition from being a popular worker to a guy who will always be over.

Also, I always get a laugh out of Hardy collapsing after Taker raises his arm. It comes off like "Oh, are we done? Gonna have a lie down now..."

    ReplyDelete
  40. Thanks for your suggestion :). I might try that.

    ReplyDelete
  41. In the whole world.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh man, forgot about the last part.
