QOTD 69: Goodnight, and Good Luck

If you haven't noticed, I've been sort of MIA for....I'd have to check. It feels like awhile. Anyway, I've gotten a second full time job doing events writing and promotion for Boston Events Insider, which is a gig that's paying me to write, do research, and attend all kinds of crazy stuff. It's like the gig I had for Roger Ebert on crack.

Thus: What are your favorite finales?

So, with a...somewhat heavy heart I must take my leave of the QOTD duties, hell, I haven't even had the time to check this blog in a few weeks. I guess we're back to Orton / Cena, wrestling wise? I think? Who knows.

Anyway, I wanted to say thanks to everyone who responded to the QOTDs, praised it, hated it, whatever. It was the first time I ever had a real audience of people who would respond to whatever I would write. We all learned so much about each other over these past months, and I like to think we've grown as a community. We're not just wrestling fans, we're...I don't want to say the word friends because we're on the internet, but fuck it, I'll say it, we're friends. Hell, Caliber and I talk on Facebook every few days, so yeah. Friends.

I've mentioned it before, but being able to do this QOTD daily (mostly daily) has given me the ability to write every.single.day, which is fantastic. Now I'm writing every single day professionally, and I don't think I'd have it in me if it wasn't for you kind folks. Posing questions I have, having my opinions validated or invalidated, has been the kind of experience that is invaluable.

So, Thank You, Blog Otters.

I'm sure I'll pop in occasionally, with a review, quip, or even the occasional, way-too-long-form question if I find the time. Hopefully someone takes up the challenge of doing a daily one of these, because I think they give people a chance to talk and converse and discuss their lives in a way they really can't anywhere else.

Here, I'll do it in song.

That said, now it's time to give shit away. If you live in New England, I have more tickets to give away than I can count - well I can count, but it's more fun if I say it that way. Find me on facebook - facebook.com/pmeekin, twitter (@meekinonmovies), or just e-mail the giveaways@eventsinsider.com e-mail directly, and check out bostoneventsinsider.com to see the kind of ish we're doling out. The coolest giveaway is currently for something called 'The Slutcracker' which is probably exactly what you think it is.

Even if you don't live in New England, find me on facebook. I'm friendly!

Now what you're really here for:

Bye! See you around!

Comments

  1. The Scrubs finale was the finest hour of television in the last decade. There was no better, more moving conclusion to a television show this decade.

Then they pissed all over it with Scrubs: Med School. But I'm a huge Scrubs fan and I can forget about it.

And also the Office ending was pretty amazing too.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Your back!
For a finale, I would say the last 5 or 6 episodes of Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, it just seemed great after a good build.

    ReplyDelete
  3. The final episodes of Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood is the most satisfying sequence of events I've ever seen.

Death Note gets an honorable mention for being the most thorough takedown of a villain ever.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Ok good, glad to see I'm not the only FMAB fan.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Good luck with everything man. Its easy to fall into the snark trap here but I always appreciated the effort to give us something to bullshit about. Just like anything, they cant all be homeruns, but good stuff overall. Cheers

    ReplyDelete
  6. The last Newhart obviously, best final scene a television series could ask for.

    ReplyDelete
  7. How it was all a dream?

    ReplyDelete
  8. This. Times a thousand. And its misunderstood black sheep cousin, the St. Elsewhere finale, which, if nothing else, gave us the Tommy Westphall Multiverse. On the other hand, it gave us this too: https://vimeo.com/52885052

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yes, good luck, and blog otters probably was a hit and miss. I'm more of an Alper.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I think weve had this discussion before, maybe in a Caliber thread, but i liked the Seinfeld finale more then most. The thing is, how do you pay it off better? The characters were never sentimental or sappy so you cant do a feel good episode of like Jerry and Elaine getting married. There wasnt an ongoing huge plot story that needed resolving. I dont think it was a tremendous finale, but I just struggle tothink of another way to do it. It sounds morbid and kinda dark but maybe have a character like Newman die...kinda like Susans death.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Seinfeld is a good choice, gonna be hard to beat that one.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Loved the office finale. Great feel good wrap ups for all the characters

    ReplyDelete
  13. Oh and thanks a lot Paul, you stole my idea in case I was called to do QOTD's.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Chuck had an excellent finale, with every character getting their last big moment.

Scrubs kinda counts, if you ignore season 9 (which i liked, but was nowhere near as good of a finish).

The Norm Macdonald show kinda had a great one, except there's one more completely random and mostly unimportant episode right after it.

Sports Night absolutely deserves a mention in the conversation. Quo Vadmidus?

Some people hated it, but I *loved* the ending of Terriers.

On the flip side, both Reaper and Todd and Book of Pure Evil had really disappointing cliffhanger finales.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The Babylon 5 finale earned every bit of its sentimentality, in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The new full-time job sounds like it's gonna be pretty sweet. Good luck, and thanks for the QOTDs!

    ReplyDelete
  17. The Wonder Years finale was excellent. I think this has come up before.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Gotta go with Roseanne using the entire final season to troll her viewers.

Although you finishing us off with 69 is pretty cool too.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The Scrubs finale was hard to beat. Great stuff.

I liked the Wire finale too

    ReplyDelete
  20. Also, good luck Meekin. Sounds like a good opportunity

    ReplyDelete
  21. Cheers. To you and the finale.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I also have grown to appreciate the Seinfeld finale. I think anyone who insists it was a total flop only does so because they wrote it off the second a flashback clip was shown. I agree that it was unecessary to pad the double episode time with clips, but there was still at least a full episode worth of new story and the ending was wonderfully absurd. And I loved how they teased a proclamation of love between Jerry and Elaine and then thoroughly dashed the convention.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Breaking Bad was a absolutely flawless conclusion. I don't think I've ever been so satisfied with a finale.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I have high hopes for the ending of Naruto Shippuden...if we ever get there...

    ReplyDelete
  25. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryDecember 8, 2013 at 9:48 PM

Avatar: The Last Airbender. That was a fucking finale.

M*A*S*H as well. *Spells out GOODBYE on the helipad for Meekin*

    ReplyDelete
  26. The Office UK Christmas Special. As satisfying a finish as one could hope for.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Kevin and Winnie not ending up together is great

    ReplyDelete
  28. Kenny powers living in Africa in a tribe was pretty epic.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Stranger in the AlpsDecember 8, 2013 at 11:34 PM

Hey, Meekin? Did you intentionally leave us with question number 69?

    Fucking genius.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Death note's finale is a trillion times more impactfull in the manga

    ReplyDelete
  31. MASH
    Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt
The like 3 times Gintama has been cancelled
    House

    ReplyDelete
  32. Accept no substitutes, the best finale ever was Six Feet Under.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I enjoyed the Soprano's finale. I know many thought it was a copout but I think it let you be in the moment, and let you feel what it was like to be Tony Soprano in that very moment...

    ReplyDelete
  34. Never really watched the show, my folks told me how it ended, and it sounded brilliant....

    ReplyDelete
  35. It was definitely the most creative ending probably of all time. I thought it was great.

    ReplyDelete
  36. It would be pretty amazing if AJ stopped by ROH and did a program with Adam Cole. I think an angle like that would really put Cole over the top. Of course, the second Cole reaches the proverbial "next" level he'll be poached into WWE development, so maybe that would be the worst thing that could happen to ROH. How about a Styles/Bennett feud then?

I think Clay still has a chance of capitalizing on the Vader-esque potential he showed back on NXT, so I'm all for the heel turn but really hope he ditches Tensai who is boredom incarnate. Has there been a good monster tag-team since The Road Warriors/Demolition? I'm very concerned by that "top heel team" phrase. Will this be the WWE's way of saying f-you to us for liking the Rhodes Brothers so much?

That's actually a pretty good name for Callahan, but I don't know about that gimmick. Computer hacking has nothing to do with physicality. This could be the gateway to some of the lamest feuds ever: The Big Show is apoplectic that Solomon Crowe ruined his Credit score, Dolph Ziggler has not forgotten about that malware Solomon Crowe uploaded on his computer, Sheamus has challenged Solomon Crowe to an identity on a pole match. I'm really worried that this is going to lead to the return of York Foundation style laptop computer shots.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Always appreciate double entendre.

    ReplyDelete
  38. What about his back?

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm showing my age, but I loved the tragedy of the Forever Knight finale in the 90s. Considering that their budget was slashed and they HAD to use clip, it had a huge emotional resonance. Lacroix's speech on suicide STILL speaks to me, and I can still quote it almost verbatim... "Don't trade a treasure....for an empty box."
    Also really enjoyed :
the West Wing (especially Santos' "What's next?"0
    Arrested Development (Season 3)
The Wire (any season's finale, but the series finale was particularly beautiful0

    ReplyDelete
  40. I always thought the whole, 'And by the way, my dad died the next year' thing was sort of strange.

    ReplyDelete
  41. M*A*S*H- They STILL show the full thing on television when a repeat station runs through all the episodes, all these years later.

Scrubs- a perfect way to wrap things up.

Avatar: The Last Airbender- all the character arcs ended perfectly, and they STILL left a big cliffhanger for the future ("where is MY MOTHER?").
And of course that infamous "Newhart" one where he wakes up in bed with his wife from the previous series, having had a strange dream.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Sorta-related:

I've only watched maybe 1/3 of all Simpsons episodes in the last decade, but one that I've seen multiple times on syndication is the Christmas one set like 30 years in the future. Bart is divorced with 2 kids, Lisa married Milhouse and has a daughter, Maggie is a rockstar. I just recently found out that they were having testy contract negotiations with the voice actors and in case they couldn't come to a deal, this episode was written as a possible series finale.

So, if it HAD been the series finale what would you guys have said? I actually thought it was pretty good for a newer one, and I think I'd have been fairly satisfied if it had been the last one. We got to see where everyone ended up so I felt a sense of closure, and kinda fitting to go out with an Xmas finale since they had an Xmas debut.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Completely agree with both points (maybe amend "best finale" to "best sitcom finale" re: Scrubs).

Was super impressed with how The Office writers dealt with Michael. You *had* to bring him back for the finale, and they used him just enough (I think it was 2 scenes and 2 lines) to satisy everyone and not cheapen "Goodbye Michael".

    ReplyDelete
  44. The Office finale pissed me off, because they expected me to find Ryan intentionally harming an infant funny. I think I may have also been overly sensitive about it since my son was 4 months old at the time the finale aired, and he's turned me into a giant softie.

But to quote Sheiky Baby taking about WM3, "besides that, everything was great!"

    ReplyDelete
  45. The Shield finale was fantastic. While there weren't many happy endings to go around, it was still quite satisfying.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Has anyone volunteered to take over the QOTD? Because I'd considered taking over when Meekin was MIA. If no one else does, I'm willing to toss my name into the hat.

    ReplyDelete
  47. "destroyer"

    Justice League

    ReplyDelete
  48. I still need to finIsh Attack on Titan, not sure what the hold up is there

    ReplyDelete
  49. It's something that would really happen. There's never a totally happy ending in real life. This rang true for me.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I wish they would have went ahead and actually made the Seinfeld reunion episode that partially aired on Curb Your Enthusiasm. You could piece the episode together from the table read and the actual clips and it was just tremendous.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen Meekin. It was a good ride, and I appreciated the space to bullshit.

Hopefully this job affords decent enough benefits that you can get some help with your
    mustelidae fixation.

I wish you well in your future endeavours.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Porn-Peddling Jef VinsonDecember 9, 2013 at 6:34 AM

1.) This is pitiful. AJ IS TNA.
2.) Why is this so hard? Put the Clay/Tensai with the red-headed Diva no one likes and book them like Doom with Nancy Ben*BEEEEP*. Put the Funkadactyls with Woods/Truth This way it you get a new monster heel team and it doesn't fuck up Total Divas.
    3.) Meh.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Im not sure...a few of us thought it would be cool to have people volunteer to do it like on a weekly basis. Itd givs the thread a new voice and topics every week, might help to keep the thing fresh. No idea on where that stands tho

    ReplyDelete
  54. I didnt mind that aspect. It fit Ryans selfish character so well and the kid ended up with Nelly. She had been wanting to adopt that last season...kid gets a better home, nelly gets to be a parent, ryan gets to be selfish and run off. Win win win

    ReplyDelete
  55. Can we add Impact Wrestling soon, as per the news about AJ leaving? But everything's fine....

    ReplyDelete
  56. Everyone and their brother has volunteered to do it... now that Meekin is officially gone someone should probably just step up and formally ask Scott about it.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Is this news about Impact for sure or are you just speculating?

    ReplyDelete
  58. I watched the Justice LEague movie "Flashpoint Paradox" this weekend... that was excellently done... not at all for children either.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I see what you did there.

    ReplyDelete
  60. You do this a lot. Its not funny, it doesn't make you sound smart or witty, and it isn't even good trolling. Go learn some Netiquette, then come back and apologize for your behavior.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netiquette#Netiquette

    You're Welcome.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Agreed. The last few episodes were just absolute edge-of-your-seat stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  62. See I thought that was fine... just a "Real" ending instead of the mega happy ending. It fit that show perfectly since it was about real life and wasn't a "sitcom" as such. Jack Arnold is one of the easiest characters to relate to that I have ever seen on TV.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I just shot him an email about the weekly revolving qotd idea. I definitely like having a non wrestling thread around

    ReplyDelete
  64. Cool thanks. I think most of us like the non wrestling content...a lot of the time it gets more comments than anything other than the live threads.

I wonder if Scott is afraid I'll scare off the female demographic or something lol.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Did enjoy the Netiquette link...never knew it was a formal "thing"

    ReplyDelete
  66. It's up there for me and it gets brought up quite a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Probably not but you'd think if he actually was mad at Savage, he'd make it a point to not have the guy in any games or have any toys made of him.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Yes. It drives me nuts, and is becoming more common (referring to the spelling and grammar correction) people either think it is funny, or think it makes them look smart. It does neither.

This is a more thorough explanation http://www.albion.com/netiquette/

    ReplyDelete
  69. " I'm very concerned by that "top heel team" phrase. Will this be the
WWE's way of saying f-you to us for liking the Rhodes Brothers so much?"

Huh? Were you expecting the Rhodes to be tag team champs for a decade? Or move on from feuding with the Shield to beating 3MB every week? A top face team needs a top heel to feud with...

    ReplyDelete
  70. Jobber said it best "spelling and grammar corrections are the laziest forms of trolling". I typically think its people who want to seem smart but cant contribute to the conversation so the resort to that. Eitherway, good link.

    ReplyDelete
  71. So, according to Lanny, Johnny Ace did approach Lanny after Randy died to approach the possibility of a posthumous induction. If that's the case, and assuming Johnny got Vince's permission first, that kind of kills the idea that Vince has been harboring some hate-filled grudge for decades....

    ReplyDelete
  72. That is exactly what it is. I have a friend that has a degree in linguistics... who has worked at Bed Bath and Beyond before, during, and after getting her degree... she does this often because she is a grammar snob... I have reminded her on numerous occasions that she dropped 40k on an education that has only served to allow her to correct Facebook posts and text messages.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Anytime wrestling comes up around very casual or former fans someone will chime in with "remember when the Ultimate Warrior died and they replaced him". Every single time. Macho - Steph is only for hardcore smakrs.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Actually it wasn't between Macho and Vince that something was "up" it was between Macho and Steph IFYAKNOEWUTIMEAN

    ReplyDelete
  75. Here in South Carolina it is 15... this was a ballot initiative that WON and was added to the state's Constitution... this is why direct democracy would never work.

    ReplyDelete
  76. ...but asking her dad is perfectly acceptable?

    ReplyDelete
  77. "I hate HHH and love CM Punk so this must be true because logic!" - Every Smark

    ReplyDelete
  78. Re: 1st link

This is what I hate about conspiracy theories. People dismiss certain unsubstantiated rumours as false, but declare others true for no reason other than they fit the conspiracy better. Why are the sources that claim Steph was 17 credible, but the ones that say she was 14 are not? This article tells you flat out that the 14 year old version of the story is wrong, but they don't say why or how they know.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I like their definition of 'blackballed':

    http://www.wwe.com/videos/superstars/randysavage

Guys, if he was being 'blackballed' there wouldn't be four pages of videos on the web site. He wouldn't constantly be referenced in web site articles.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Cheers finale ruled.

Loved The Sopranos finale. Tony was killed. Nothing about it was open-ended. Anyone who hates it are babies.

    ReplyDelete
  81. And by "friend" you mean woman you are trying to sleep with?

    ReplyDelete
  82. I don't "try" to sleep with any woman.

This particular one I could have closed (she used to send me naked pictures all the time) but she was just too damned annoying to be around. She has since moved away and I can deal with her on that basis... as long as she doesn't do her grammar shit... she also likes to while about how hard/shitty her job is... but never does anything to improve her situation which is another trait I can't stand in someone regardless of their demographic.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I'm guessing that if they turn Brodus and Albert/Tensai/Sweet T whatever he's calling himself this week heel, they'll get new music. "Somebody Call My Momma" just ain't a heel tune.

I actually dug Brodus' gimmick, though I appear to be distinctly in the minority on that. I hope he makes the heel thing work.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Exactly. That's a major problem with the gimmick.

    ReplyDelete
  85. "Turning him heel at the height of his popularity and having him join a midcard faction would be rather stupid to say the least."

So...we can expect it to happen then?

    ReplyDelete
  86. I really like the Wyatts, and DBry is my current favorite active wrestler. I'd be good with his joining the faction and going full blown, assassin style submission wrestler. But, if he turned they'd probably have him just be the standard chickenshit heel, which would seem like such a fucking waste.

    ReplyDelete
  87. While I understand the skepticism that ANYONE is ever truly retired from pro wrestling, I think Shawn is.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I have said many times that Bryan's current look is what the WWE wants him to have. It wasn't long ago he had a buzz cut and a shorter beard.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Instead we'll get Cena/Orton at RR/EC and Mania. Just because.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Had the same thought, but read it much later.

    ReplyDelete
  91. At the time, I think they were just trying to find Dwayne something to do because his initial face run bombed so badly. I can remember Rock's run in after being gone for awhile due to "injury" and Ross saying something about how it was good to see him again, then being shocked when he Rock Bottomed whoever the face happened to be. I don't think anyone really expected the character to take off the way it did, and the development to headliner was relatively slow.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Did Occam ever blade with said razor?

    ReplyDelete
  93. I found it a great episode in a sea of mediocrity and would've accepted it for a finale when the show clearly has run off the rails in terms of ever having one. There's nothing for them to do, and a future episode of that magnitude was the best bet.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I generally finish with "you're welcome."

    ReplyDelete
  95. I've mentioned this previously in threads, but given Randy is the only one to receive the "I'm your biggest fan...I wish you the best" acknowledgement from Vince on a departure to a rival company, I suspect Vince took whatever happened between him and Randy much more personally than he took anything that happened between him and other people (Warrior, Bruno, Hogan, etc.). If you have a falling out with someone you aren't that close to in the first place, that's one thing. But someone who you treat like a brother or an idol...that's a lot different.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Please don't lump those of us that see the stupidity of this into the "every smark" group!

    ReplyDelete
  97. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryDecember 9, 2013 at 10:50 AM

Same. I had some friends gripe about the turret, but fuck it, that was AWESOME.

    ReplyDelete
  98. The Steph rumor is all over the place. Generally closer to 14, though.

    ReplyDelete
  99. LOL, your definition of "good read" is a bit much. The first article reads like a 12 year olds!!

I think the Masked Man's recap of Savage being livid that the Von Erichs (including Chris) were honored before his family is probably slightly more accurate myself...

    ReplyDelete
  100. You took the time to copy and paste a dictionary definition? Lame.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Perfect takedown.

    ReplyDelete
  102. it has been requested a few times.

    ReplyDelete
  103. At least the Savage/Steph one can't be actively disproven with video tape...

    ReplyDelete
  104. I'm pretty sure the SLUT chant has gone away because fans are afraid of her shrieking and slapping them, a la Big Show.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I'm a little surprised at all the pure hatred people have about this rumor. It was never really confirmed or denied and even Meltzer thinks there is some validity to it. Jesus Christ it's not a 9/11 conspiracy theory.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Still might work with a super smark crowd. Look at all the obscure shit they get chanted the night after Wrestlemania.

    ReplyDelete
  107. If you think Vince isn't anal or vengeful enough to be watching for things like that, I would have to assume you just started watching wrestling last week. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  108. I apologize that's not it is not written by Shakespeare.

    ReplyDelete
  109. The Shield, The Office, Eastbound and Down, Breaking Bad, Oz, and Monday Nitro are my favorite finales.

Not joking about Nitro, either. Sting v. Flair one more time...and then Nitro going off the air forever to the tune of SHANE MCMAHON IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FUCKING RING AS NITRO IS SIMULCAST WITH RAW?

Independent of the shitty Invasion storyline that followed, that was an incredible ending to Nitro as a show and WCW as a brand. Sure, it was a total dick-wagging move by the McMahons, but...I mean, they won. That was it. Ballgame.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I don't think he even knows video games have evolved past NES. I I doubt he has a Benoit order out on Savage but clearly he wasn't paid the tribute he deserved on air despite being on WWE.com. Again I think WWE.com is delegated to others.

    ReplyDelete
  111. You should totally post video clips of otters eating live crocs as part of the goodbye.

When it originally aired, I wasn't fond of STNG's finale, but it has grown on me. I really like it now. I felt roughly the same about DS9. I think Angel's finale kicks some serious ass, and it might be my favorite...even if the angle was a bit rushed.

It seems most finales usually miss, either because they are trying desperately to create interest for another season, or because the show has just run its course.

I just watched Dexter's last season, and the final episode just didn't make much fucking sense to me. Or, you could say that Dexter really embraced his psycho nature, in which chase it made perfect sense. Either way, it wasn't satisfying.

    ReplyDelete
  112. I think we all immediately clicked on the comment section to post this. Well done getting there first.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Pretty good call with The Shield. That show was a rough fucking ride.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Not to be cynical, but exactly who benefits from clean wins for both stables?

    ReplyDelete
  115. At one point, I called House the best show on TV, but it fucking lost me when he drove the car into Cuddy's house. It just struck me as horribly out of character and I was out. Didn't bother with the next season.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Can't speak for everyone but for me it's a combination of Montreal Syndrome (gets brought up too often with no new insight/info) and the "it's SO obviously made up!" factor (the story kept changing over the years to adapt to new info that discredited it).

    ReplyDelete
  117. Shoulda known; dude was seriously old school.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I actually think breaking bad was overrated and the last season was silly. I mean it was cool in the way that a big action movie is but its not much as far as storytelling. For me it jumped the shark when they had that fucking car commercial in the show with Walt and his kid racing the dodges. That was pathetic

    ReplyDelete
  119. IMO the shield told the exact same story but better.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Breaking Bad does the episodic perpetual cliffhanger thing very well. But an actual plot/plots? Not so much. Yeah, there are mark out moments and thrilling payoffs, but 90% of what happens onscreen is essentially totally irrelevant.

In BB's defence, it has turned escapism into an absolute art form - and it's beautiful, there are some great performances, and it's always worth watching. But it has no greater point to make, no wisdom to impart, no challenges to offer.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Totally agree. There were so many times over the course of the series where I ended up yelling out loud, "Oh, COME ON." Way too many episodes where the suspension of disbelief was too hard to achieve.

    ReplyDelete
  122. I liked thd Oz finale but fuck, did that scene where they show Beecher on the bus heading back to Oz was fucking depressing.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I agree. It started getting worse when it became all about 13. The first 3-4 seasons are fucking great

  124. I agree about the first few seasons; don't know that I had a problem with 13. Really, it's kind of amazing that the show went on as long as it did, considering the formula. Still, they held on to me for quite awhile.

Speaking of which, I'm *fucking amazed* that Supernatural is still going strong. Love that show. I haven't watched any of season 9 yet because I prefer to wait until a season is done and then watch all the episodes back to back, but I dug season 8.

  125. There are occasional exceptions where pulling out the grammar/spelling card is acceptable. Virtually all of them happen in the middle of a net argument and one person says something along the lines of "your an idiot" or "your retarted." You can't wrap up condescension in a grammatically incorrect sentence and not expect to get called on it. Beyond those circumstances, I agree with your point completely.

  126. Best of luck on the new gig, Meekin. I'm a Bostonian, so maybe I'll see you on "the other side."
By the way, it's Christmas season, how do you not sneak in a picture of Emmett Otter??

  127. Best TV dad ever.

  128. My favorite finale has always been the Larry Sanders finale. It wasn't too sappy or sentimental and the show as a whole had never jumped the shark, it ended at exactly the right time.

On the flipside, my pick for worst would be Showtime's bone headed decision to cancel the brilliant show "Penn & Teller: Bullshit" without even giving them a final episode and thus letting the show have a proper sendoff.

  129. Nope but Dixie Carter cutting the worst promos since Bobby Lashley does happen on a TV-14 wrestling show.

  130. I accept your apology ;)

  131. I had to laugh at the author's mistaken usage of the word "subtle".

    ReplyDelete
  132. No one, which is why they shouldn't book that type of stupid shit to begin with. But if we're getting those matches whether we like it or not, then it only makes sense for the three-man heel teams to win decisively.

  133. You mean "It's not funny".

    ReplyDelete
  134. Again mind your manners. Since your parents did a poor job in raising you I will fix their failures.

    Correct your behavior immediately.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Yeah, I've always gotten that impression with the website, too. It seems if something could sneak past Vince anywhere, it'd be there.

  136. "Making use of clever or indirect methods."

The author is clearly a moron.

    ReplyDelete
  137. He don't like to learn. But he hate what he don't understand...

    ReplyDelete
  138. I'll correct my behaviour if you correct your grammar.

    Deal?

    ReplyDelete
  139. And CM Punk is on my side.

    Good enough for me!

    ReplyDelete
  140. No. You will follow the correct protocol or you will receive the appropriate punishment.

    ReplyDelete
  141. What kind of argument is that?

"I heard from an inside source that Daniel Bryan used to be a woman, and was Andre the Giant's daughter".

OMG that is just too ridiculous to be completely made up! There must be some seed of truth to it!

  142. Sure, I can see that for whatever reasons Vince was more upset than he was at other guys (which incidentally explains a lot about why Bret was so upset at Vince over the Screwjob).

But all we really know is they had a severe falling out. That doesn't automatically mean he had sex with Steph.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Okay, this one actually WAS funny.

    ReplyDelete
  144. I loved Larry Sanders, criminally underrated...

    ReplyDelete
  145. I think I'm concerned that you think the WWE trolls internet wrestling boards only to then punish people that like certain wrestlers with a big "fuck you". The Rhodes brothers have had an awesome story going for the last four to five months now. Cody Rhodes hasn't been this interesting for this long maybe ever so I don't think there is a "fuck you" anywhere to be found here even if they dropped the titles tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  146. It was open ended, it was left to the viewer to interpret what happened. I dont think he was killed but to each his own....

    ReplyDelete
  147. Exactly. I have no idea why everyone thinks that because Vince didn't talk to or about Savage ("he talks to everyone!") it means his daughter had sex with the guy.

    ReplyDelete
  148. I know, there's nothing indirect about wearing Macho tights and doing an elbow drop. Particularly when it's obvious enough to be payed up later. Then again, this is pro wrestling - maybe there isn't room for subtlety.

  149. I agree! Remember how everyone crapped on CM punks heel turn last July? in retrospect it legitimized him far more as a main event guy than his increasingly stale faux-face of the company shtick he was falling into. Now he's a far more natural and effortless face because fans are so easily willing to eat out of his hands, because he got that edginess back and he's not being shoved as "the guy". People just love being against the grain, I can almost guarantee you that if Dbry had stayed the champ after Summerslam upto this point, there would be some real backlash among some of the crowd, people just hate getting force fed, even if they aren't the idea of cheering the top guy in the company is so alien to a lot of these guys they are almost predisposed to not do it.

It's almost as if a big title run as a mega heel is a rite of passage for the top guys in the company, I don't know if Daniel Bryan is one of the few that doesn't need it, but his natural magnetic quality with the fans is so freaking strong right now, and the "yes" gimmick refuses to die, I really don't think anyone is going to listen if you turn him heel, people will still cheer for him and chant "yes".

  150. Fortunately, WWE never does anything stupid, right?

    ReplyDelete
  151. Unfortunately it will pave the way for nothing but originals starring the New 52. I prefer the adaptions.

    ReplyDelete
  152. I am just glad it made Badfinger's Baby Blue popular, along with No Matter What, Day After Day, and Come and Get It.

  153. Wait, AJ left due to financial concerns and is now going to places where he will make less money? Is this the Twilight Zone?

    ReplyDelete
  154. Isn't Irwin R. Schyster currently too busy trying to penalize anyone who dodges getting health care?

    ReplyDelete
  155. But Bryan is much higher now, than Rocky was in 97. ;-) If Bryan shaves his beard and cut his hair and joins Triple H... THAT would be a shocker. :)
